THE SECRET CHARMS OF SHARN
Eberron 5e Campaign Recruitment

Sharn beckons the strong and the weak with the hope of a better life. In the aftermath of the Last War, as entire armies are disbanded, new countries seek recognition, and old countries prepare for the Next War, every individual tries to find a new place in the new world, and leave the old wounds behind.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Setting: Eberron, Breland, Sharn. For the most part, it will be an urban campaign in Sharn with some exploring of strange locations.

Action Types: Investigation, social encounters, exploration, diplomatic messes, good old combat, shadowing and street chases, infiltration, reversals of fortune, impossible dilemmas, betrayals, redemption.

Story Types: Some of the things I wish to emphasize in this campaign are characters” involvement with the plot and with NPCs. To put it bluntly, for the sake of the story, I will mess with your characters. I will take things away from them, jail them, bring them from rags to riches and back again, threaten and kill loved ones, but I will also make sure that their long-term goals evolve. They will rise not only in power, but in influence and reach. They will be able to develop long-lasting institutions and influence the world. In other words, I want the characters to be the story, instead of being witness to the story. Accordingly, characters need to have goals that make them plan and do things every morning, meet with people, seek favours, etc, instead of only having things happen to them and their relations.

Sources: I plan on adapting, mixing, and matching smaller pieces into a broader campaign arc as the campaign evolves, with easily recognizable goals, regularly reached, based on characters’ choices. I will likely select from modules written by Keith Baker and associates, from Adventurers League’s Embers of the Last War series, from the four 3.5 Eberron modules, from 5e non-Eberron adventures (i.e. Curse of Strahd or Princes of the Apocalypse), and perhaps from The Blight.

What Brings the Characters Together: The characters are brought together the first time by their common need for some quick and easy gold. They all signed up for a paid job advertised in the Sharn Inquisitive.

HOW TO APPLY

Classes: All.

Races: Changelings, dwarves, elves, gnomes, half-elves, half-orcs, halflings, humans, shifters, warforged.

Character Concepts: Five broad concepts are presented, with an open one. Players can apply for each character concept, so up to six applications can be presented. No need to submit full builds at this time.

The Blunt Tool: You’ve always been treated as expendable, but you’re smart, just a different kind of smart.

The Aspiring Academic: The War interfered with your studies. That’s why you’ve not been admitted to Morgrave University. But you’ll get in. One way or another.

The Flawed Faithful: You believe in a higher power and live to serve it. Deep down, there is a wound that needs healing, a hole that needs filling, or a past that needs forgetting.

The Dragonmarked Entrepreneur: The Prophecy has selected you, and you intend on making the most of it, just like all the other dragonmarked.

The Strange: You draw suspicion, or worse. You may hail from a distant land, have fought for the other side during the war, or serve a strange faith. You may be one of the mercenary people that have gained bad reputations during the war, such as the Valenar or the Dakhaani, or you may simply be of a race that is not yet fully trusted or accepted, such as Shifters or Changelings. Or perhaps you just make people uncomfortable.

Open Concept: Your character does not fit any of the above concepts, but you feel it deserves consideration. Use the template for the other concepts to make your own.

Character Details: For each character concept, provide short answers (at most two sentences) to the following: general build, personality, background, and allies, contacts, and rivals.

General Build:
-Class:
-Race:
-Background:

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: (Creation, Discovery, Education, Hedonism, Love, Power, Service, etc.)

-Dalia Dorian Korran: female gnome reporter for the Korranberg Chronicle (ally) I gave her the seed information for the story which became her big break.
-Kavill: male shifter Watch investigator (contact) I’m his confidential informant in the neighborhood.

Allies, Contacts, and Rivals:

-Drevan ir’Roole: male human noble, former Brelish cavalry captain (rival) He tried to seduce me on a mission during the War. Embarrassed him in front of his peers by polymorphing into him, fighting him, and leaving him with the mess.

The Flawed Faithful:
You believe in a higher power and live to serve it. Deep down, there is a wound that needs healing, a hole that needs filling, or a past that needs forgetting.

Name: Les Colworn
Age: 19
Appearance: Pretty boy with a slightly vacant resting expression.
Class: Paladin (Silver Flame) + Warlock
Alignment: Lawful Supergood
Race: Human
Background: Acolyte (Silver Flame)

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: Service for good
-Outlook: Obnoxiously optimistic
-Integrity: Naively Conscientious
-Boldness: Naively Intrepid
-Conformity: Naively Conventional
-Religious Adherence: Orthodox, The Silver Flame
-Favourite Topics of Conversation: The Silver Flame
-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Sometimes seems to talk to himself, or stare off as if listening to something that others can't hear. Otherwise just extremely kind, generous, and naive.
-Hobbies and Enjoyments: Helping people and proselytizing the Silver Flame. He is very inexperienced, has never drank or been with a woman, the church is his life.

Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up? From a small town in Breland, his parents are peasants.
-Where and with whom did you learn your trade? Traveled to Sharn to join the Silver Flame, escape poverty, and provide for his parents.
-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? Edge the warforged saving him from looters planted the seed of a hero complex, but recently an evil entity has taken residence in his head and he's afraid to tell the Church.
-What did you do during the Last War? Helped on the farm, he was young. His parents went to great lengths to protect him from being drafted into the war.
-If not from Breland or Sharn, what brought you there? Traveled to Sharn to pursue his dream of joining the Silver Flame, and succeeded. He hasn't been in Sharn long.
-What is your wildest dream or goal? How do you wish to be remembered? Primarily he wants to help people. Secondarily, and more recent, he wants to evict this vile voice in his head, or maybe just teach it the error of its ways. But it's growing stronger...

Ally:
Edge: female personality warforged mercenary. During the war, Edge passed through his small town and saved him from looters. She joked about being his adoptive godmother, but they haven't seen each other in years.

Contact:
Jim d’Jorasco: male halfling healer. He once left a good impression on Jim by curing someone in his care and asking nothing in return. They've worked together a few times since then, but don't get along very well due to his naive blind faith in the Silver Flame.

Rival:
Nora ir’Roole: female human noble //or// Yvonne ir’Kaspardt: female human Cyran noble. Early on when he first came to Sharn, he chastized her for treating a commoner poorly. She hasn't forgotten the slight.

I wanted an aberrant dragonmark for a concept. It looks like the only way to get that at level 1 is to be variant human. So I was wondering if you are allowing variant humans or starting at a level other than 1st. Thanks.

Dotting for interest. Likely pitching a Warforged Artificer or Paladin - but I'll need to hammer out the details - working name of Mettle. Will have a dig into the background materials.

Hey DW,

Really nice how you set this up.

So inevitably I have some questions popping up as I mull over the links and hash out a concept. So I'm wondering, is it better for me to ask away in the thread, or just kind of keep reading through the material and give you a tidy package when I'm done?

I wasn't sure which is your preference for a recruitment thread.

Hi Grimmy, whatever works better for you.

No variant human, EXCEPT if it is the only way you can build a cool concept. So give it a go for an aberrant dragonmark, but please also provide alternative applications.

Black Dow wrote:

Hi Black Dow,

You can pitch up to six characters based on the concepts presented above. Looking forward to see your applications.

Well, I like the Aspiring Academic. I'm thinking of a guy born in Aundair. He's a disappointment to his hard working farmer dad. Head full of dreams about magic and exotic realms. Worst of all he's not patriotic! Although deep down his criticism of his nation stems from a romanticized idealism about what Aundair should or could be.

So I need to figure out why he has his sites on Morgrave in Sharn rather than the magic academies in his native Aundair. This school is known mainly for studies about Xendrik? They don't teach magic right?

I would not necessarily draw that distinction. They study magic, so they’re a great place to learn magic, and professors take students.

Ok well put me down as tentative. It sounds fun but I'm not sure I should divert the brain power from my other thing. Hmmmm...

No worries. Plus there's lots of time left in case you change your mind ;)

Do I need the Eberron book to play or can I just use the d&d players book?

Buckshot Bob wrote:

You can get by perusing the links I posted above. Then, depending on your specific build, we may need some setting rules, but I'd say we'll cross that bridge when we get there. In the meantime, let me know if you're interested in some of the Eberron-specific options and I'll try to elucidate.

I've started a few characters but I'm having a hard time with the character template. Is it required? No offense but it sort of just feels like filling out a form and isn't that helpful to me. I'd prefer writing a paragraph or two in character voice or doing a bullet list backstory unless that will seriously bar me from consideration.

No worries. Do what works for you, Mishima. I’ll adjust.

Thanks, sorry to be a bother. Here's my first:

Blunt Tool:

Blacklock
Male Human Wandslinger (wizard)

Character: I was an arcaneer in the Last War, respected. Valued. No one ever came close to sniffing my smuggling operation with the 14th division boys. Even our grandmothers had bank accounts just to hold all the gold that was coming in. At one point we even hired an airship to misdirect a few border agents.

The Treaty ended all that though, and with no official glory to my name my ass was on the streets as good as useless. It's funny how fast we all hit rock bottom, I guess we just thought it would last forever...

The dark tavern's door nearly split off its frame as the stout dwarven warrior hastily entered "Blacklock...you son of a b@~&$. You promised 3 crates, dog, and we'll take the other 2 from your arse."

The tavern was silent as Blacklock drained his whiskey, his boots jangling across the floor as he approached and towered over the dwarf he said barely above a whisper "You're right. We should settle the debt."

They faced off at 20 paces with just a crack of the evening sun peeking through Cliffside. The dwarf drew first but it didn't matter, Blacklock's magical defenses were unparalleled on the streets...he could take his time...savor the look of shock on the dwarf's face as he realized his end was upon him.

edit: Also were kalashtar left off the allowed races list on purpose?

edit: Also were kalashtar left off the allowed races list on purpose?

Yes and no. I won’t be doing psionics, though there might be some Dal Quor links, but it won’t be the focus.

I had an open hand monk in mind but no worries. Here is the aberrant marked character, its actually cooler if it manifests later in life...

Dragonmarked Entrepreneur:

Xune
Female Half-elf Burglar (Rogue)

Character: Down in the docks, only one thing was ever certain: you betray House Tarkanan, you die. So why am I still alive?

It wasn't my fault the heist went sour. Eddie was supposed to scramble the horses...eh...that means keeping the guards looking another way. Mint, well she had the perfect forgery all set and proper. Alls I had to do was make the switch, and damn well I did it. Cannie was our inside man though, the Tarkanan of our crew...and lets just say he liked things his way...the bloody psycho way.

We were totally in the clear and Id almost made it out the museum's last gate when a curator approached, I think just for some chatter...but Cannie crashed him just like that with a shoulder tap o' his blade. All hell broke loose and he downed two others with the fastest xbow work Ive ever seen.

Yeah, we weren't amateurs, there was a plan for cutting loose on the dice. I had the stuffing though and Cannie wasn't about to let me leave alone with it. That damn look in his eyes is what I can't forget, the terror of the night was within that vacant stare of his...

I was out then and there, I tore the damn statuette's scepter loose and flung the rest of it right in Cannie's face...he dropped his crossbow to catch it and I bolted. So yeah, technically I pinched a score from Tarkanan. Why ain't I dead yet...

The Blunt Tool:
You’ve always been treated as expendable, but you’re smart, just a different kind of smart.

Name: Stitch (they/them)
Age: 23
Class: Life Cleric
Race: Warforge (Envoy, Surgeon's Tools)
Background: Battlefield surgeon. (Medicine & Perception, Surgeon's Tools & Herbalism Kit)

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: Service
-Outlook: Pessimistic, always feels like something bad is coming.
-Integrity: Conscientious (Pacifist)
-Boldness: Cautious, but will face danger for allies.
-Conformity: Conventional, doesn't like to make waves or be noticed.
-Religious Adherence: Casual adherent (Sovereign Host)
-Favourite Topics of Conversation: Horses, shoes, sewing, poetry.
-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Higher pitched almost feminine voice, slightly melodic. Hands shake sometimes but can steady them through focus and prayer. Stutters occasionally. Hates to be dirty/bloody almost to the point of phobia. Poor memory.
-Hobbies and Enjoyments: Stitch loves horses. Horses don't always love Stitch. Also tries to write poetry.

Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up? Crafted for the war, grew up in it.
-Where and with whom did you learn your trade? Worked as an assistant for multiple battlefield surgeons at first, eventually worked on their own.
-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? The Last War. After the Treaty of Thronehold, Stitch felt abandoned and lost, purposeless, and haunted by the war.
-What did you do during the Last War? Stitch was designed as a medic for The Last War, to be empathetic gentle and caring as to be the best healer possible, but this made Stitch incredibly vulnerable to the horrors of war, so their memory had to be wiped constantly. Every battle was experiencing war for the first time, and Stitch is irreperably scarred.
-If not from Breland or Sharn, what brought you there? Once Stitch had their freedom, they wandered, purposeless and confused. The sight of Sharn drew Stitch in, and now they need money, shelter, and a bath, being completely copperless.
-What is your wildest dream or goal? How do you wish to be remembered? Wants to recover their memories to know what they've done, but is also terrified by that idea. Just wants peace. And to be clean. Maybe own a horse-ranch and have servants to do the dirty work so Stitch can just watch the horses.

Ally: Drevan ir’Roole: male human noble, former Brelish cavalry captain: Formed a close bond in the war, Stitch saved his life, but doesn't remember it.

Contact: Edge: female personality warforged mercenary. Marched together on more than one occasion. Stitch has some memories of their conversations, but most is fragments.

Rival: Max Murlock: male human private investigator. Has a pet theory that Stitch is a serial killer. For all Stitch knows they could be right. Hopes not.

Mishima, I like the vignettes, but they are not that helpful for understanding personality, motivations, and goals. I understand the vignettes are helpful for your process, but if possible, once they're written, I would appreciate if you could try to give me some of the things I need to understand your characters. That said, I'll try to work with what you give me.

Going on vacation till the first, will submit when I am back.

Thanks, I'm trying...really am. Not sure why I'm having such a hard time with the template. I've filled it out about half way and deleted numerous times. I might take a day without looking at it and come back fresh with the revisions.

Tough for me too. I have enough trouble with one concept, and my characters usually play off the others.

scranford wrote:

To be clear, people do not have to apply for every concept. They can. That’s all. And I’ve posted my requirements. You can always put more. Less is not so helpful, but I’ll still consider the application.

The Strange

Snow

Spoiler:
General Build:
-Class: Ranger
-Race: Shifter
-Background: Urchin

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: Survival
-Outlook: Cynical
-Integrity: The ends justify the means.
-Boldness: Brave, but a calculated risk taker. Snow isn’t stupid. He’s been burnt too often.
-Conformity: Heterodox
-Religious Adherence: Orthodox, Snow is superstitious and doesn’t take chances in matters of the faith.
-Favourite Topics of Conversation: The sky, the breeze, the smell of fresh bread. How to get from point a to point b the quickest. Criticising the City Guard.
-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Fidgety, Nervous and Skittish. Snow is not the greatest at social interaction. Surprisingly patient when there’s food to be had.
-Hobbies and Enjoyments: Running rooftops, messing with the Guards, Sharing food with the orphans and homeless.

Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up? Snow grew up in the Sharn slums.
-Where and with whom did you learn your trade? A gang of orphaned children. Thieves and cutthroats, it was a nasty scene.
-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? Meeting Jim d’Jorasco, he patched Snow up after he’d been beaten senseless and left for dead. Snow would do anything for Jim.

-What did you do during the Last War? Rooftop running and slumming it in the Slums. Snow has never left Sharn.

-What is your wildest dream or goal? How do you wish to be remembered? To be seen as an actual person, and eat a warm meal every night. To have people in the street greet him like he sees them do to each other while he watches from the shadows.

Allies, Contacts, and Rivals:
Choose from the following list one ally (someone that will likely help you), one contact (someone that you know), and one rival (someone that will likely hinder you), and explain for each, in one sentence, the reason for this relationship:

Ally - Jim d’Jorasco: male halfling healer

Jim saved Snow’s life, and Snow has been protective of Jim ever since.

Rival - Kavill: male shifter Watch investigator

Kavill arrested Snow once, and hates the reputation Snow gives Shifters. He’s extra hard on him.

Contact - Timbal Grasstooth: male halfling fence

Snow occasionally sells the odd trinket at Timbal’s. He’s part of the old gang Snow used to run with, but there’s no love lost between them. Their relationship is purely business.

When will you be picking for the game? I should have my character ready by tomorrow. Sorry for taking so long.

I think recruitment closes.... January 8th.

That’s right.

Ahoy there. I made an alias for Snow. The only significant change I made to the character was the gender. Snow's a female shifter now.

Happy New Year!

Recruitment is now in its second week. Here are a few sources of inspirations. Keith Baker wrote several great pieces where he explores how a class could be used in the setting. He also wrote several pieces on specific aspects, such as worshipping, gnomes, etc. A search [Keith Baker X] should be able to locate plenty of specific resources.

Her are some of my favourites for classes:

On bards

On barbarians

On druids

On fighters

On monks

On sorcerers

On warlocks

Quote:
Warlock - Vessel: This is a twist on the enemy patron, with the idea that a spirit has been unwillingly bound to you – that you are a living prison for a powerful rakshasa or Fey. Your powers are a manifestation of the spirit inside you, and the more you use them the more they will grow… but is there the risk that the spirit could escape? Meanwhile, allies of the prisoner could seek you out and try to kill you in order to release the spirit within.

That's definitely on theme with what I had in mind for my Faithful concept.

Baker has a nice way of decoupling the mechanics from the class that opens new possibilities.

His idea for a Silver Flame Arcane Archer is pretty rad

Dotting for interest... Also wondering if I can use material from UA-30?

Kayne Rhal wrote:

Hi Kayne,

Just to be sure, UA-30 is about mass combat, is that right? If so, it is quite unlikely that this Eberron campaign revolve around mass combat. Not to say that it would never happen, but it is certainly unlikely to happen more than once or twice, and not until much later in the campaign.

Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you meant another UA.

Grand Lodge

The UA I found references some addition for wizards and Warlocks... In my case I was looking at a Warlock pact from it. I made sure to go out and find the link for you... 30 might not be the code they use but the source I used has it marked as such... but I did the easy thing and found the page for you..

Warlock and Wizard

I was specifically thinking of The Raven, for a warlock build I have in mind... But after reading Baker's info on warlocks, I might be looking at one with a Undying Court patron.

I'll probably be fine with The Raven, if it works towards your character (less interested in your build at this stage). So my question will be how does that choice fits your character and its place in Eberron.

Again, I hope this helps. Do not hesitate if you have questions or comments.

Thanks...it does help.

Hi there!

Character entry from Atlas2112! =D

Aspiring Academic:

General Build: Wolfgang Von Goethe, a sane Warlock of Insanity
-Class: Warlock, pact with Great Old One
-Race: Human, if a man can be called such
-Background: Researcher of things I should never have known

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: Discovery, of power.

-Outlook: It's...complicated. I'm manic-depressive. If I think that I'll be critical in a situation, I'll fill the volume of the room, but at the first hint of uselessness, I'll deflate until invisible.

-Integrity: Unscrupulous, of power.

-Boldness: Cautious

-Conformity: Heterodox, when compared to some.

-Religious Adherence: Casual adherent, but such high glances are blinded by the insanity that I must keep at bay.

-Favourite Topics of Conversation: In all of our success, in all of our lives, who will bury us when we die.

-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Prefers telepathy to speech, but the voice is as across a great chasm that holds a Terrible Thing that we best not disturb.

-Hobbies and Enjoyments: Reading books in languages long forgotten that hold secrets best lost.

Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was child and then a man in Wroat, though such things mean little to me now.

-Where and with whom did you learn your trade?
In the lowest level of the great library I spent too many nights bent over a tome. It's proper name is Cultes Des Ghoules and it has opened my eyes.

-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path?
My daughter was killed by Joseph Curwin. Upon him must my vengeance dine.

-What did you do during the Last War?
I am ashamed to say that the affairs of men mean little to me. I used what influence I had left from my former life to buy me time to study the Book. Only recently hath I emerged to the harsh light.

-If not from Breland or Sharn, what brought you there?
I have heard rumors of puissant tomes. Such songs are the only music I might hear these days.

-What is your wildest dream or goal?
How do you wish to be remembered? After bringing Joseph Curwin to the end he so richly deserves, I shall reveal to mankind the great horrors that lay across the thin velvet of reality they hide behind. Then I shall at last make them safe, and all will live knowing that 'twas hand made them so.

Ally: Elaydren Vorn: female human artificer, House Cannith acolyte. In her I have found a kindred spirit, the only other soul that understands that sacrifice is needed for power.

Contact: Kavill: male shifter Watch investigator. He has seen hints of that which I already know to be true. He is curious too in how to stop it. We learn from each other.

Rival: Max Murlock: male human private investigator. The fool is wholly ignorant of the reality of things. He seeks to hinder me, and dabbles in things best left to those of real power.

Character entry from Atlas2112! =D

The Strange:

General Build: Kara the Silvertongue, Fire Sorcererer...ess, of Fire.
-Class: Red Dragon Sorcererer...ess.
-Race: Halfling. Half the ling, twice the fun!
-Background: Criminal, they call me! You take a couple (hundred) things that don't belong to you, set a few buildings on fire, and everyone loses their mind. Pah!

Personality:
-Primary Motivator: It's complicated, I like a lot of thi--hedonism. It's hedonism.

-Outlook: Optimistic!!1!

-Integrity: Unscrupulous, of fire.

-Boldness: Cautious. Hahahaha, just seeing if I could say that with a straight face. Intrepid, the only way to fly. And set things on fire.

-Conformity: Heterodox.

-Religious Adherence: Agnostic, but whatever right?

-Favourite Topics of Conversation: Me.

-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Wacky quirk of getting into trouble and expecting others to get her out of it.

-Hobbies and Enjoyments: Either setting things on fire, or yelling at the weird people who don't want her to set stuff on fire.

Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Cut my teeth as a coal-hauler in the smelters of Sharn from the time I was big enough to hold a bucket until I was big enough to get the balls out.

-Where and with whom did you learn your trade?
The aforementioned foremen of forges had a special affinity for young girls that like to play around fire. And with fire.

-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path?
My powers self-exhibited when a pre-igniter malfunctioned. Somehow I was able to start a -very- large amount of coal on fire and saved three mens' lives. Since then I've just been...chasing that feeling.

-What did you do during the Last War?
Do you know that in war people will LET you set things on fire? House Medani fielded some rather formidable units, and I...cooked for some of them. Kept me in less trouble than otherwise, I guess.

-What is your wildest dream or goal?
I want to have a feeling greater than that of saving three men, with fire. I'm beginning to suspect that petty thievery and small cook-fires will not do.

Ally: Diana d’Orien: female human Orien courier. Couriers are the most uptight by day...and they know the BEST parties by night. We are wing-sisters, and when one's tongue gets us in trouble, often the other can get us out.

Contact: Drevan ir’Roole: male human noble, former Brelish cavalry captain. He wants me, I can't stand him. But he has fine wine and the BEST stories.

Rival: Jim d’Jorasco: male halfling healer. Ugh! He's always "Don't burn them, Kara," and "I can't heal them if you burn them too much, Kara," and "Help me put out this fire -again- Kara." It's like he can't think of anything _interesting_ to say!
