Indeed. I strongly recommend reading at least one of those for anyone who is not entirely comfortable with the setting, in particular if it relates to your favourite classes and races, as it opens interesting ideas, while giving a feel for the specifics of the setting.
Which brings me to...

Some clarifications regarding selection:
Having read through the applications, I feel I need to give some clarifications that will help some of you improve their applications. I will not name anyone in particular, but let me say that some applications are quite weak with regards to some of the things I will mention below.
Here are the main thing I will be looking at:
The Player
-Is the player reliable?
To get a sense of this, I look at players' posting history.
-Is the player engaging the story, the other characters, and the GM through his or her writing?
This is a tricky one, but oh so important. Some players are mostly reactive, which is normal at the very beginning of a campaign perhaps, and wait for GM's input and only react to it. Other players, on the other hand, tend to be more proactive and engage the GM with inputs of their own, which tends to enrich the story further. Finally, some players also engage with other players' characters. This is harder to do, but it builds the party as being more than the sum of its parts. I'm particularly looking for players who can engage GM and/or players.
The Character
-Is the character interesting somehow?
This is highly subjective, but, to put it bluntly, is your character standing out in some way? This can be because of his or her particular personality, his or her class, race, and background combination, or because I just want to read more about his or her story and see it developed.
-Does the character evoke the setting?
This is a key one. Eberron is a very particular setting. Is your character tied in some way to Eberron or could it just work in any setting by just changing one or two words in the description?
-Does the character fit well with the themes being explored?
The stories will mostly take place in Sharn, a metropolis and therefore a strongly urban setting. They will touch on the aftermaths of the Last War and involve intrigue, deception, investigations, and, of course, action.
-Does the character have some potential to interact with the setting and with other characters?
This is in part related to the type of character, for example a lone rider concept, the character's personality, in particular when combined with other characters in the party. This is one reason why I'm not emphasizing background in this recruitment, as background tells me less on what makes the character tick and how it will deal with the setting and others.
-Has the character potential for development?
One way for me to gauge this is through his or her motivations and objectives. I'm looking for characters who will not only react to the challenges, but also go out, face, and create challenges of their own to achieve their goals. In other words, let's say there is no threat to your character, no stimuli coming from the GM, what does the character do that day? Sit and wait in the batcave waiting for crime? If so, that's fine, but I'm less interested in that type of character.
I hope this helps. I find many entries are quite nice, but others are lacking, and it's partly my fault, as I have not been as transparent as required. Feel free to adjust your applications. I don't ask too much stuff, but it's important stuff, at least to me and this recruitment.
Also, keep in mind you can apply for several concepts. If you do, feel free to let me know if you have strong preferences or rankings of your multiple applications, in case I may be able to accommodate your preferences.

Looking for a spot
Hi Buckshot Bob,
Not sure what you mean. You’ve presented one application earlier on this thread. You can present one for each concept if you like. Where do you see Antonio Cavartee fitting? Slso, can you add to the profile some of the answers to the questions I’m interested in? Build and backstory still misses some elements.

Dreaming Warforged |

Would love to closely link my character to another PC, if someone's into that and I actually get selected. I.e. siblings, best friends, enemies, long lost romances, whatever works for the characters. I always find games more interesting when there's pc-pc history.
Johnathan, that's a great idea. It can be tricky to do this before selection. However, I had planned on players being able to do just that after selection. Different dimensions of background, personality, etc can be reviewed in light of who else is in the group.

Dreaming Warforged: I am thinking of creating a warforged Artificer (Gunsmith subclass) but the option presented in Unearthed Arcana at the Wizards site seems horribly overpowered. Would you be open to my submitting this concept with the understanding that, if this character was selected for your campaign, we would work together to "nerf" the abilities down to a more reasonable level in keeping with the rest of the party?

The Strange:

-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? The Mourning transforming him into a GOD!!!
-What did you do during the Last War? Scratched out a living on the mean streets of Metrol
-If not from Breland or Sharn, what brought you there? Wants to research the cause of the Mourning at Morgrave University.

How do you wish to be remembered? As the individual who discovered the cause of the Mourning and cleansed Cyre of its taint.
Allies, Contacts, and Rivals:
Choose from the following list one ally (someone that will likely help you), one contact (someone that you know), and one rival (someone that will likely hinder you), and explain for each, in one sentence, the reason for this relationship:
Ally
Light - 'She' was a relief worker in the New Cyre refugee camp who took pity on a strange, orphan boy.
Contact
Max Murlock - Max has interacted with me in the past using me as a 'runner' to find out information in the rougher areas of Sharn.
Rival
Kavill or Lucan Stellos - I'm on his list of undesirable, young 'punks' who should be swept from the streets of Sharn. (Not sure who would be more appropriate)
Synopsis: Tarn (last name unknown) was orphaned at the age of 10 when his mother died from disease (father was never in the picture) and he spent the next few years on the streets of Metrol. When the Mourning 'hit', something in Tarn...changed.

That would be fine. Note however that there are no guns in Eberron. I'm not sure where UA got that from, but it wouldn't work in the case of this campaign.

Interesting.
I am completely new to Eberron and I am surprised that with flying ships and trains that their are no firearms. That shouldn't be a problem though as I could just go with the other subclass of the Artificer which is an alchemist. It too is overpowered, though, and will need to be toned down.
Here is my submission for that character...
General Build:
-Class: Artificer
-Race: Warforged (Envoy)
-Background: House Agent (Cannith)
Personality:
-Primary Motivator: Creation (of my own life form)
-Outlook: Optimistic
-Integrity: Conscientious...or maybe not.
-Boldness: Intrepid
-Conformity: Conventional
-Religious Adherence: Non-believer
-Favourite Topics of Conversation: Himself, engineering
-Quirks, Habits, and Oddities: Painfully blunt, no social grace, has occasional speech issues (stutter, use of wrong word)
-Hobbies and Enjoyments: cute little fuzzy animals, viewing art, attempting art (badly)
Background:
-Where were you born and where did you grow up? What is 'born'? I was created in Sharn. I served (briefly) on the front lines of the Last War
-Where and with whom did you learn your trade? I was created and trained by none other than the great Baron Merrix d'Cannith in Sharn
-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? I was devised as the final (and perfect) culmination of Merrix's attempts to create a machine who could create other machines. Serving along with my fellow warforged in the trenches of Cyre as a field engieer was my apotheosis.
-What did you do during the Last War? I served for a short time as a field engineer.
-If not from Breland or Sharn, what brought you there? n/a
-What is your wildest dream or goal?
To create my own sentient life form
How do you wish to be remembered?
As the greatest warforged engineer (artificer) to have ever been devised.
Allies, Contacts, and Rivals:
Ally
-Edge: female personality warforged mercenary -- She was a comrade in the Last War
Contact
-Elaydren Vorn: female human artificer, House Cannith acolyte -- She was a fellow artificer student (if she is a high level artificer she would be my trainer/mentor instead)
Rival
-Drevan ir’Roole: male human noble, former Brelish cavalry captain -- He was the commander over my platoon of warforged soldiers and took issue with my tendency to express my beliefs about the superiority of my kind over other sentient beings.
Synopsis -- Spanner was brought online in the final year of the Last War by Baron Mannix d'Cannith to serve as a machine who could make other machines to complement warforged soldiers on the battlefield. Now, he serves House Cannith in various capacities and appears to be quite loyal to his creator.
I am considering the possibility at some point of Spanner coming into contact with/hearing about the Lord of Blades and becoming a part of his cadre.

I am surprised that with flying ships and trains that their are no firearms.
The thing is, its magical technology not scientific technology. Eberron trains don't work because people figured out the physics of steam engines, they work because people discovered a way to bind an elemental to follow a path of arcane sigils. Wandslingers not gunslingers.

Johnathan Eli Holbrook |

Here's an article for some ideas on how to translate firearms into Eberron. Firearms in Eberron
Another idea is changing them to purely shoot magic, no gunpowder or bullets. So maybe instead of 2d6 piercing it's 1d10 lightning damage. And instead of "You can make 40 rounds of ammunition", change it to "You can recharge your weapon worth 40 shots".
That would jive would the rest of the gunsmith's abilities.
All that said, if the GM feels this would take away from the 'Eberron' feeling of the game, and you're just as happy with the Alchemist anyway, then this is a non-issue.

I could be ok with ideas that would fall along those lines. And Mishima's explanation is spot on. Thanks to both!

Storyteller Shadow |

Class: Cleric
Race: Changeling
Background:
As a young babe Reth was found in the Wynarn River near the city of Varna. The kindly Sesha Kaskin found the poor child unharmed but badly malnourished thinking the child human she took it in and cared for it as if it were her own. Sesha had come to the Eldeen Reaches at the behest of the Friars of the Silver Flame to spread the faith to the heretics of the Reaches. As a human and adherent of the Silver Flame Sereth would not have conceived of allowing a Shifter to live as such creatures were abominations.
Sereth had met with little success in the four years she had been living as a missionary in Varna. She somewhat lost her way once the child came into her life and she began to spend much more time caring for it than spreading the light of the Silver Flame. As the child grew Sereth out of the corner of her eye she would see strange things happening to it almost as if it were changing forms. At first she passed it off as her imagination being alone near such an obviously dangerous location as the Eldeen Reaches. Her fears were confirmed though as the child became old enough to walk and talk, this child was no human! It was a Shifter!
Her first thought was to dash it against the wall and end its existence lest it grow up to be a force for evil in the world. As she stood there holding the babe in her arms she realized that it was not something she could not bring herself to do. Instead she decided that she would ensure that the child was a force for good and bring it up under the strict teachings of the silver flame.
Reth grew and Sereth’s determination to ensure that her “son” would become a force for good grew as well. Reth was forced to hide his heritage from locals in Varna and thus grew up ashamed of what he was. On the occasions that Silver Flame Friars visited, Reth could not meet them or receive them lest his dark secret be revealed. Despite this life of solitude and isolation Reth developed a deep respect and passion for the teachings of the Silver Flame. He hoped to match the deeds of past heroes of the Silver Flame. Perhaps he thought through such great deeds he could transcend his race of birth and a purification of sorts thus becoming human. At 15 Reth received a vision from the Silver Flame and took up the mantle of the cleric much like his adoptive mother.
Unlike his mother he was not content to preach the message of the Silver Flame he was a warrior. Reth found locals who were willing to teach him the ways of combat. A combination of physical prowess and divine might were the ways that Reth saw to achieve the transcendence he so desperately wanted. At 17 Reth joined an adventuring band and headed into the deepest darkest parts of the woods to combat evil. Reth and his band the Valkyries, took the fight to evildoers whether agents of the Dragon Below or of the Emerald Claw it did not matter. Many denizens of the Reaches saw Reth as a traitor to align with the Church of the Silver Flame considering their traditional stance against Shifters and their attempts to systematically destroy their lycanthropic ancestors.
Unfortunately a journey into the Gloaming resulted in the loss of all members of the Valkries except for Reth and Ladonna a female human wizard. Reth managed to pull her out when the battle versus enormous vermin went terribly wrong. Reth felt horrible, he had failed. He felt he must atone for this failure by journeying to Thrane and being purified by the Keeper of the Flame. Sereth begged him not to go, as his presence revealed would place them both in danger from the church. Reth felt that it was time for him to reveal himself to the church he was sure that they would accept him and see him for the warrior of light that he was.
Against the better judgment of Sereth, Reth journeyed across Aundair with the aid of Ladonna, who grew up there. Taking the main road to Flamekeep, Reth in disguise with Ladonna accompanying him finally arrived. His big reveal proved to be yet another disaster. He was seized as an assassin and a heretic, how could a Shifter be blessed by the Silver Flame? Reth was thrown into chains to be questioned later and judged by the Cardinals in light of the odd situation. Clearly, this Shifter received divine strength from the Silver Flame but how could this be? Before a resolution could be reached an agent from another land intervened.
Reth was broken out of his imprisonment by a shadowy figure. Reth did not know where Ladonna had gotten to nor could he take the risk to find her. He felt obligated to follow his rescuer though he knew nothing about him. Reth felt more disillusioned than ever, how could the very church he dedicated his entire life to turn on and imprison him? Reth rationalized along the road out of Thrane that this was a test of faith that he was determined to pass.
This introspection so dominated Reth’s thoughts that he did not question the motives of his rescuer seeing the break as divine intervention. His rescuer after finally getting Reth out of Thrane revealed himself as a Dark Lantern an agent of the crown of Breland. His assignment in Thrane was coming to an end so he decided to spring Reth believing that Reth could aid in his next mission. His name was Kranth a human and agent of the throne of Breland. He explained to Reth that his mission was to infiltrate a new organization in the city of Sharn, a merchant company named the Darkstar Company.
Kranth believed that Reth’s unique situation as a cleric of the Silver Flame would allow him to gain access to the Company as a healer. He could then feed information to Kranth if the company was revealed to be up to no good. Reth was intrigued, though investigation was not his strength perhaps this was test of his versatility? He therefore decided to accept the opportunity. Reth agreed to join this Company, indeed he believed that a mercenary company would allow him to find a place where he belonged. If the company proved itself a force for evil he could bring it down and find acceptance in Breland. Thus, either way it would be a win for him.
After arriving in Sharn Reth joined the Darkstar Company. Through years of service Reth did not find anything amiss and moved up the ranks to assume a position in an elite Darkstar force the Sellsword Syndicate. While his position is as a healer, his skills with ranged weapons has made him a valuable member of the Company in more than one way. In his time with the Company he has moved from a Healer to a Leader or at least attempted to, this is Reth's first big push to lead an excursion.
Reth's push met with success as he successfully brought a Company to the mysterious Mornlands and extracted the target item from a vault in the doomed city of Metrol.
He is back in Sharn now but still feels an emptiness inside being forced to hide what he is has become more and more difficult, is the Flame for him if he cannot be what he is to worship it?

-What is the most important event that shaped your personal path? Being "adopted" by Sereth.

-What is your wildest dream or goal? To unmask himself and be accepted among the clergy of the Flame.

Allies, Contacts and Rivals
Ally - Kavill - Reth pities the Investigator for being a Shifter and aids him as he can when not in service to the Darkstar as an unofficial member of the Church of the Flame when the Watch requires Divine aid.
Contact - Elaydren Vorn - Always good to cultivate good relations with House Cannith and Vorn is one whom Reth has had the pleasure of dealing with sine the Last War ended.
Rival - Light - A clash of religious philosophy through several encounters in the city has created bad blood between Reth and Light for the past several years.
Class: Cleric
Race: Warforged
Background:
Pierce is different from most Warforged, he never fought in the last war as one of the last of his “kind” to be created by House Cannith before the forges were ordered to be closed by the Treaty of Thronehold. Pierce was in training to become a Ranger but perhaps due to an accident in his creation his mind was much sharper than many other members of his “kind”.
In addition to ending the Last War, the Treaty freed all Warforged leaving them without purpose. Pierce was left disillusioned, only weeks after stepping into the world from, wherever his kind gained sentience, he was now alone. No friends, no allies, no family. Pierce wandered from the Sharn Enclave of House Cannith into the streets of Sharn.
For months he wandered around the city gaining insight into its layout and the beings that dwelled there. All the while, he kept his form as hidden as possible from the “living” who seemed to despise his kind. Warforged do not sleep and Pierce used that time well spending many nights reading on numerous topics in Morgrave University. Professor Dash Dannigan on the faculty approved Pierce's nightly ventures in part to get to know on a personal level a Warforged as they were fast becoming more than mere servitors and in part because a Warforged attached to the Library would make an excellent night watchman and one for whom no payment would be required.
History, Engineering, Nature, of Sharn itself, Geography, Magic and finally of Religion. These books though did not provide Pierce the answers he sought, what was his purpose?
In interactions with the Warforged who did return to Sharn – Pierce did not gain any further insight from them but certainly the bitterness he felt was mirrored in these poor constructs. With all avenues exhausted, Pierce sought out High Priest Phthaso Mogan of the Pavilion of the Host to seek the Dwarves wisdom. While Pierce found few answers he did hear the call of the Sovereign Host, most specifically Aureon seemed to whisper directly to Pierce.
Perhaps it was because Pierce was not present at House Cannith long enough to be warded away from religion like others of his kind but he took to the religious duties as few Warforged have. His calling was not that of a Cleric but of an Inquisitor, he was too aloof and disliked to be a member of the clergy proper. The life of an Inquisitor though suited the Warforged quite well.
For a few years Pierce served the Sovereign and the High Priest by default. However, his view of the Gods were much different than others of his order. He saw himself in a partnership with the Sovereign and more specifically with Aureon, after all, was Pierce not immortal unlike the “Breathers” who made up the vast portion of Sharn and the world at large. Perhaps House Cannith was merely a vessel for the Warforged to be created?! Such discussions led to censure by the High Priest.
Pierce, not one to worry overmuch about such things, began operating on his own. In such a large city it was easy to serve the Host and Aureon the way he saw fit, the Order itself be damned.
His work has recently begun as an Inquisitive for Information Acquisitions, run by Kalaash’arrna, a half-orc with the Lesser Mark of Finding. While dour in nature, Pierce is perceptive and knowledgeable, his spells granted by the Sovereign only heighten his abilities. In the course of his dealings he has come into contact with the dwarven associate of Abraxus Wren, Torin.
Torin has utilized Pierce on matters too small for Wren's attention or in matters tangential to cases Wren is working on. Pierce has yet to meet the famous and somewhat reclusive Wren, he has little interest in doing so really, after all, he is just another Breather who counts his life in shorter and shorter amounts of breath.
In addition to his acquaintance with Turin, Pierce has also struck up an unlikely friendship with Dalia Dorian Korran, a charasmatic Gnome reporter of the Sharn Inquisitive. As with all of Pierce's other relationships, this is one of quid pro quo. Pierce assists in questioning witnesses for the gnomes articles in places where the gnome fears to tread while the gnome feeds Pierce information on cases where necessary.
Recently Pierce joined a group of Inquisitives, the Wandering Eye. After his first successful mission with the group uncovering a Professor seeking to usurp the findings of an associate Professor one of his old acquaintances, Kavill approached him with a new assignment.
”The market for Dreamlilly within Sharn has recently been growing exponentially. A source of mine in the Sharn Watch has stated that the drug is coming from the mysterious continent of Sarlona. The drug is highly addictive and can cause serious side effects. I would like to write an expose on this growing story could your new group of Inquisitives investigate for me?”
Pierce and the group agree to the assignment and within a week are able to find a syndicate which is importing the drug into the city. Pierce spends the week moving among the addicts in flophouses addicted to the drug and takes some pity on these Breathers. After the article is published in the Sharn Inquisitive the syndicate is broken up by the Watch but Pierce knows this will not be the end of it.
