Just as Esmeralda enters the center portion of the room, one of the statues brings both of its arms down in a flash and hurls two axes at her. It seems the statues are not merely there for decoration after all.

Attack Esmeralda: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

However both weapons get caught on something as they leave the statue's hands, and they fall limply to the ground at its feet.

Meanwhile, Yanda and Kahwen have started examining the statues. They notice that one of the western pair of statues has runes carved all over its legs. They appear to be Dwarven, but an archaic type that is difficult to decipher.

You can attempt Knowledge (history), Linguistics, or a relevant Craft or Profession check to either translate the runes or record them accurately.

Balin (or anyone else who speaks Dwarven) has a +5 circumstance bonus and can attempt a check untrained.

Ash tries to translate the ruins.

Ashwell is able to create a very faithful transcription of the writing. The runes appear to be a record of certain feats performed by dwarven kings of the ancient past. You don't have time to study the details, but the notes will surely be of great interest to the Pathfinder Society later.

The other statues are interesting artistically, but not particularly noteworthy, and you continue on. (If anyone really wants to deal with the statue axe-trap you can, but it has not reset yet so will not hinder you from moving on to the next room.)

You enter a torch-lit chamber that looks much like you remember it. The room is decorated with extravagant carvings, canine statues, and polished pillars. A grotesque statue on the western platform stares toward the eastern door with sparkling gems for eyes and a bronze axe planted firmly in its head.

New map is up!

Kahwen is so enthralled with the possibility of stealing those gems that he almost forgets that he and Thadeaus will have already disarmed these traps a while ago in the future. He scratches his head thoughtfully as he thinks about that for a moment then shrugs.

”Time travel always confuses me,” Ashwell groans, trying to work through all the anomalies the group has witnessed.

Yanda discovers that most of her notes on the reliefs from earlier (or is it later?) will be sufficient. This room apparently had not suffered much damage over the years, and there are not many differences in the carvings. She is able to fill in some gaps in her notes.

Thadeaus and Kahwen are satisfied that the hounds will pose no danger this time. Looking at the statue up close, Kahwen sees that one of the axes is already resting in the axe-shaped gouge in its head. The eyes are gorgeous faceted opals, and look like they can be quite easily extracted. (No skill check needed.)

At that moment three dwarves enter through the double doors of the room, and the leader shouts a few sentences in Dwarven, with a tone of surprised anger.

Dwarven:
"What? Thieves as well? As if the hateful duergar invaders weren't insult enough! Drop your loot and we'll drag you gently to your cells where criminals belong!"

All three draw their weapons and hold them threateningly toward you. We're not yet in combat, though it looks like it could break out at any moment.

Kahwen has the gem halfway to his pouch. He can't argue with the dwarves' logic. He is stealing from them. Sort of. The gems are going to go missing, but it occurs to him that maybe one of these dwarves was going to take it so that wouldn't really be stealing since it belongs to their community.

He is moving to put the gem back when Thadeaus speaks. It may not convince the dwarves, but it convinces him and he puts the gem in his pouch then reaches for the other with casual confidence.

Make sure you treat our home with respect, even if we are losing it to the duergar today." He puts away the warhammer he was wielding, and gestures to the others. The joy Kahwen expected to feel in getting the two shinies was destroyed by the fact that he was stealing from nice people. Maybe even one of Balin's ancestors for all he knew.

"Better for us to have them. Maybe we can give them back when we get back to the future," he says, in a quiet voice.

He nods at Yanda. "Maybe that gap won't be there, this time and we can look around, more," he says.

You enter the miner's district once more, and come first to the place where you are certain there was a gap before, but now there are no signs of a hole. Looking at it now, you realize that the duergar must have tunneled into this mine shaft during their invasion of Jormurdun. Kreighton Shaine has given you a magical trap known as a digger's travail to leave a nasty surprise for them when they arrive.

To place this trap, you first have to choose the most effective spot to set it up. You need to indicate which 5-foot square you are choosing on the rails. (New map posted.) If you (as players) remember where the hole was before you can use this knowledge, or if not you can attempt an Intelligence check to see if your character remembers.

Then you will need to install it, which involves sliding it beneath the rails of the mining track, positioning it carefully, and securing it with several bolts. This will require a Disable Device, Knowledge (engineering), Sleight of Hand, or relevant Craft check.

Lastly you will need to arm the trap. This is Disable Device, Knowledge (engineering), Use Magic Device, or a relevant Craft check.

Any number of people can try to assist on these checks. You know that the trap is fragile, and if you fail a check by too much it will explode prematurely.

The installation starts to go awry, but with Kahwen and Yanda assisting you all manage to get it set in place. He then does a brilliant job arming the trap, and everyone backs cautiously away. All is ready. Only time will tell now if the duergar will fall prey to it.

”That’s an earth elemental fighting a magma elemental! They are both immune to bleed, poison, paralysis, and sleep and stunning. They don’t breathe, they can’t be flanked or hit by precision damage. Don’t use fire against the magma one, but cold will hurt it more than usual.”

Yanda tosses a tanglefoot bag at the earth elemental (I assume the blue one).

"Can muh axe hurt da beastie?"

Correct, the blue one is the earth elemental.

Yanda adeptly tosses a tanglefoot bag and its goopy tar bursts out all over the earth elemental. The magma elemental who was waving its lumpy arms around suddenly halts and looks at Yanda. It takes a step in her direction, and then looks down in surprise when it almost steps on the dwarf cowering before it on the floor, as if just noticing him for the first time. The dwarf on the north side of the tunnel takes advantage of the elemental's distraction and scampers away down the tunnel to safety. The others stay frozen with fear.

"Uh-huh...uh-huh...uh-huh..." Kahwen says as Ash starts to go through what he knows about the 2 elementals. "Uh-huh...uh-huh...uh-huh...What? WHAT?!"

He is clearly distressed about the last two points about both creatures and looks down at his sword, thoughtfully.

Instead of charging in (literally) he begins the strange steps and motions to place himself back in Crane Stance, ending up a little closer to the trouble than when he started.

Enacting Crane Stance, again.

Thadeaus steps out where he can see and be heard by both elementals and states in a loudly in both Terran and Ignan,

"Hail deep friend and magma swimmer! Please put aside your differences and allow these simple miners to pass in safety! Surely two beings so close to the earth can reach common ground?"

Diplomacy w/Inspiration: 1d20 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 9 + (2) = 16

Thadeaus prepares to flick his wand of Magic Missle from his wrist sheath if diplomacy fails. He will target the one who moves aggressively at the Dwarves or toward the party.

Ash also prepares to use his magic missile wand if one of the elementals threaten the team. If so, he fires.

Damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4.

If the elementals hold, so does he.

Double Move

I forgot to make the Reflex save earlier to dodge the tanglefoot bag.
Earth elemental Reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 5

The earth elemental swings around when it hears Thadeaus speaking its own language. It emits a noisy rumbling sound like boulders being rubbed together.

Terran:

"What would a flimsy flesh-walker know about it? I'll pound you to dust!"

The elemental tries to move toward you but its limbs are fused to the ground. It strains against the goop.
Strength check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

But it still can't move. It waves its arms in fury at the interlopers, its quarrel with the magma elemental temporarily forgotten.

It's not attacking anyone, but this counts as not backing down, so the readied actions can go off. Ashwell, you need to move to be in line of sight to cast a spell. I'll apply the magic missile damage if you do so. Thadeaus, were you readying to draw the wand or to cast the spell?

Once Thadeaus hears the Elementals rude reply he yells to his team and the miners,

"They aren't in the talking mood! I recommend violence! Dwarven friends flee while we have them distracted!"

Setting actions to words he flicks his wrist and points his wand at the stuck elemental!
