  • "Dunna know about you lads, but I'm headed right for The Helmed Lady! Her clan name is Alemaster! Our Lord be praised!" Bruno makes the sign of his religion and then wipes the foam off his upper lip as he strides away singing boisterously.

Benjamin will make his way to the Victory Fountain before seeking out Abernard Royst.

You split up to explore the town with the intent to meet up at the inn later.

    The Helmed Lady

The Keg immediately peels off towards the dwarfen taphouse. Following directions from one of the experienced caravaners, he finds the tavern just off of Fountain Square. The stone building is three stories, taller than most in the area, and features a painted sign depicting a woman warrior with a distinctive helm.

Inside, the taphouse is warm and preparing for the night's patrons. The place is decorated in stone and hard angles, dwarven fashion, and there are a good number of oddments displayed atop the wide, flat mantelpiece. Bruno is greeted by an older dwarven woman from behind the bar. "Welcome, friend," she says in the dwarf tongue. "Always happy to see a new beard. I'm Kagnin. What's your name, and, more importantly, what can I pour you?" She waves a hand towards a half-dozen tap handles.

    Victory Fountain

Mikos and Ben walk down Juliver Way and pass through Fountain Square and its namesake Victory Fountain. The fountain consists of a stone plinth within a pool, crowned by a statue of a helmed half-elf heroine. A plaque identifies her as Tarwynna, leader of the army that crushed the goblin kingdom of Zog in 4217. The fountain appears to be much older than the rest of the buildings in town.

A number of townsfolk are in the square, gathered in small groups. They greet you with guarded smiles and nods. A pair of Hellknight guards stand quietly beside the fountain.

A billboard nearby has a number of notices and messages tacked up. You sift through the random meeting notices and pick out a few interesting ones:

  • Citizens and Visitors of Fort Inevitable are warned to avoid the environs of Mosswater town ruins and Glow Water Lake. Another pair of enterprising adventurers attempted an ill-advised and misguided expedition there. They have been missing for two weeks and are presumed dead. Heed the threat! Be you so warned!
  • Come to Sefurd's Potions and Reagents for all your alchemical and herbological needs!
  • Presumptive 'Adventurers' *require* a Letter of Warrant to operate within the territory of Fort Inevitable or they will be prosecuted as bandits. Contact the duty clerk at the Citadel for more details.
  • Looking for glory and a bit of gold? Can you handle your own with blade and shield? The Salamander Company may be for you!
  • Any Citizen found aiding or abetting any of the so-called 'Seven Foxes' will considered as such. Traitors will be tried and hung in accordance with the law.

    Abernard

After the fountain, Ben seeks out the home of Abernard Royst. He gets directions from a local and finds it back towards the Juliver Gate, not far from the caravansary. The house is older and its paint a bit faded but of quality construction. A knock at the door elicits a quick, sharp response. "Yes, yes? What do you want?" a voice asks impatiently, though not rudely.

Flex-time is in effect, so feel free to chime in wherever you like. Anything specific for Rod?

Mikos peers at the notices and the groans in disgust. He jabs his finger at notice to adventurers looking at Ben. "Did you see this? Not only is there no incentive to kill goblins, I bet that "letter" has some fee or tax to pay." He spits on the ground checking other notices. "I wonder who this Salamander Company is?"

"I've a better question Mikos, why did that road warden not tell us of the need for a letter of warrant? And how much territory do they claim? I agree, we'll spend all of the money from goblins just buying the letter no doubt about it."

    Abernard

"I seek knowledge of the arcane mysteries, and information about the area. I am seeking honor in the Crusade and have stopped here for a time."

Mikos frowns and walks over to a fountain guard. "Hey, what's this about a letter of warrant for adventurers?"

    Victory Fountain

The guard looks at Mikos and nods, "The Citadel wants to keep just anyone from going around and acting like they are heroes, killing so-called "villains" on a whim, and so on. You'll have to talk to the clerk, but I think its 50 gold for a year-long warrant."

    Abernard

The door unlatches and opens, revealing an older human man in a short robe and pants. He is shaved bald and has a elegant handlebar mustache, tinted black. He looks down at Ben with a raised eyebrow. "Indeed? I can't say I've ever met a dwarf with an interest in magic, beyond those enchantments for weapons, armor and big doorways." He holds his hands to express an exaggerated archway, then crosses his arms and appraises Ben closely. "I am Abernard Royst... I gather you already knew that." He sighs and waves you inside. "Come in, then, before my tea grows cold. Would you like a cup?" He walks into a richly-appointed parlor, warm from a glowing hearth and cluttered with stacks of books, scrolls and sketched maps among a number of other odd items on display.

Abernard sits down and takes a sip from a steaming ceramic cup. "What's your name, then? Where did you study the arcane mysteries?"

    Mikos gapes in disbelief.

Did you mean 50 silver? Remember that we've moved to the silver standard so 50 gold is... yikes.

After a drink or three, Bruno will lean in and catch the owner/bartender's attention. "So, what's this about a letter of warrant. The hellknights preventing the glorious pursuit of divine adventure?"

Mikos squints at the guard with distaste. "What about this Salamander Company? Are they adventurers? What if some fellows just want to go kill goblins? Seems like they'd be doing you a favor. Would they still need a letter?"

    Victory Fountain

"Monsters are fair game but..." the guard replies in a cautious tone. "Some people actually debate whether goblins are monsters or not. Hard to imagine anyone's ever encountered one of those little bastards and called them anything but." In a lower voice, he adds, "I doubt you'd be charged for clearing out some greenskins, but I'd be careful it doesn't go any further without a warrant."

"As for the Salamander Company, they're sell swords. They're involved in stuff all over the River Kingdoms, and they've got a base here in Fort Inevitable." He points to a building a ways back down the road. "They're always hiring, if that's your thing."

    The Helmed Lady

Bruno appraises the beer as excellent, all the different brews. Kagnin draws a pint for herself and sits across the bar from you. She shrugs nonchalantly. "They are just trying to keep things orderly, which is a never-ending struggle out here in the River Kingdoms. This whole land is filled with ne'er-do-wells. The Hellknights want to keep anyone from kicking in someone's door, murdering them and taking their stuff, and then saying it was for the greater good. There's a fine, gray line between a vigilante adventurer and an outright brigand."

"Sounds like we need to be careful around here Mikos. That's too much grey area and too little coin being paid for us to spend money on a warrant. Maybe we can get one gratis."

    Abernard

"Of course, my name is Benjamin Copperbottom. I would very much enjoy a tea and some of your time. I first became interested in the arcane when I began to research the flying citadels of my people. It is a path not many of my brothers and sisters follow so as you imagine much of what I know is self taught."

The stout dwarf blows on his tea after dumping an unhealthy amount of sugar and a pinch of rock salt into it.

"Mostly I am interested in the immediate area, the beasts that call it home and what to expect from them. We met an ironclad fellow on the road who tasked us with clearing out goblins, yet he failed to tell us of the warrant needed to do so. I suspect either trickery or negligence and would much appreciate a local perspective to understand the dynamics of this situation."

    The Gate Market

Mikos continues on down Juliver Way, past the Juliver Arms Inn, the Red Shield tavern opposite, and some stables. The market square is just behind the inn, in an open field adjacent to the wall. Mosswater Gate stands nearby.

The market is quiet, orderly, and (like the rest of the town) very tightly regulated. Among two neat rows of covered stalls, local farmers and livestock-keepers sell produce, dairy goods, and meats alongside the various wares of other craftsmen from the surrounding lands. Several townsfolk are gathered, either shopping for goods or sharing the latest gossiping with friends.

    *

    Abernard

"Fascinating," Abernard nods vigorously. "I had quite forgotten about the flying citadels. What a wonder they must have been! So sad such miraculous things have been swallowed up by time, yet ancient evils linger on to plague us still." He sighs and takes a sip of his tea.

After Ben explains his reasons for visiting. "Hmmm, well I would never accuse a Hellknight of trickery. More likely negligence, or the knight expected you to check in at the Citadel before embarking upon any 'adventure'."

"The 'local perspective'? Ahh, let's see... The Lady Commander and her Hellknights strive to create a bastion of law in the middle of the River Kingdoms, although they would probably have more success defending a sand castle against the tide." Abernard smirks with a chuckle, then continues. "For a certain measure, one has to appreciate their efforts -- they keep a good stretch of the road safe for templars and supplies going north, the town here has grown and prospered, and they have tamped down the rampant banditry in this region. But, this security comes at a cost and the Hellknights' methods are a touch too... demanding."

"The original commander, Lord Varden, was assassinated five years ago. Audara Drovust was his closest lieutenant. She immediately, and vigorously, set to investigating the murder. Within a month, she rounded up eleven suspected conspirators who were supposedly plotting to overthrow the Hellknight regime. Some of the conspirators went to the gallows still protesting their innocence, but the lady commander informed them they would receive the exact same clemency they had shown to Lord Varden, and hanged them anyway."

"I lost a few good friends in that purge." He takes a long sip, staring into the distance for a long moment.

"But do not let me bore you with politics. You wish to know about goblins and other fauna of the surrounding lands?"

Mikos walks up to the nearest vendor and stares at him for a long moment. "You have any trouble with goblins?" he asks with a scowl.

    The Helmed Lady

Kagnin laughs and moves to refill your mugs. "Still, I'd watch yourself with the Hellknights about. They have very clearly defined and codified laws, for about everything you can imagine, but they are also very enthusiastic about punishing transgressors." She returns with the frothing mugs and slides one over. "I like it, for the most part, because they keep the peace. I can keep in line with their laws, and at the end of the day, they're fair enough. Better this than the likes of Thornkeep, where you're likely to get a dagger in the back for your boots."

"You think that the Hellknights are really interested in getting rid of the goblins? The goblins give them a reason to be here, tightening their grip on the River Kingdoms to sell us all to their devil masters. How can you ever trust devil worshippers? I tell you how you get rid of the goblins and the Hellknights, you put a bounty on goblins and give folks an incentive. Right now I gotta pay the Hellknights 50 silver to register as an adventurer and go kill goblins. They're not interested in really getting rid of goblins. If they were they'd march right up to that green tower where the goblins are hiding and finish them once and for all. Think about it."

Yeah, expect the usual delays and slowdown for the holiday weeks. Happy holidays everyone!

    The Gate Market

The vendor flinches from Mikos's furious tirade, turning a shade paler. "I, uh... umm. That's a bit of a hot take on things..." He glances side to side nervously. He points at an item on his table, whispering, "I'd keep my voice down, saying things like that around here. Or best not say them at all, if you take my meaning." In a normal voice, he continues. "Look, I'm just trying to sell my goods and get by. Trying to avoid getting rolled up in politics and what not... I like to keep my head out of a noose."

"If you really want to hunt goblins, you could try talking to the Order of the Nail at Mardyn Barracks, but I gather you aren't fond of the Hellknights. High Mother Dremagne of Abadar, at the Temple of the Golden Key, might be able to grant a bounty chit." (Marked both locations on the map)

    *

    The Helmed Lady

Kagnin shrugs, taking a swig. "I'd advise avoiding the place. I'm not exaggerating, its a den of murderers and brigands. The Hellknights have a number of standing bounties for the heads of notorious bandits that hole up in Thornkeep."

"Buuut, there are some decent folk there, too. Like here at Fort Inevitable, there are all kinds of gems in the rough. If you end up there, go see Torra Stoneframer, the local builder. She's a bit of a sour grape -- her demeanor's an acquired taste -- but she's trustworthy."

    *

    Abernard

"Goblins, hrmm," Abernard ponders for a moment, stroking his mustache. "I've heard they are a nuisance of late, more so than normal, ambushing small caravans and travelers along the Crusader Road. From what I'm told, they have been organized, employing tactics and avoiding the Hellknight patrols."

"Goblins of the Echo Wood are mostly of three different tribes, each of which despise the others." The old wizard clears off a map of the region, pointing landmarks as he talks. "The Ripping Chains, a particularly savage and vicious lot, lair in the Pit of Chains. They're aggressive and violent, but have never proved to be very disciplined."

"The Bonedancers are numerous but are rather insular. They rarely range far from their home in the Dismal Caverns. Lastly, the Brambleclaw tribe lives in the warren of Thornkeep. Their leader, who calls himself Great Chief Graalsk, is clever enough to organize his small tribe, but he's always seemed more interested in organizing cheap labor than banditry."

"I suspect something, or someone else, however. Activity around the Emerald Spire has increased recently. Passers by speak of monsters roaming the surrounding woods -- things that have no business being in this part of Golarion -- and even the bandits avoid the place. It could be the elusive goblins are hiding there."

"I cannot verify any of this, sadly. My adventuring years are long past, but it happens that someone is in town that could tell you more. Iliara Starcloak of the Goldenfire Order, a wizards guild in Thornkeep, is currently staying at the Juliver Arms. She is a good friend, and she is here searching for two of her guildmates, who have gone missing. She told me they were last seen heading towards the Emerald Spire ruins. I'd suggest speaking with her if you wish to investigate."

Mikos just snorts at the peasant's unease. The swordlord shrugs, "Abadar, huh? At least His church more likely to take an appreciative view of free market policies." He heads over to the church to follow the new lead.

    Temple of the Golden Key

Mikos leaves the bewildered vendor behind at the Gate Market and walks across the small town to the Abadarian temple. Second in size only to the Citadel, the temple is certainly the most ornate building in town. There is no worship service currently, so Mikos finds the place quiet. The doors are closed, but not locked. A young acolyte in a square-cut robe greets Mikos at the entrance. "How can I help you, pilgrim?"

Welcome back and hope you all had a great holiday! Happy New Year!

He starts to speak but again in interrupted, this time by a woman's voice, gentle but commanding. "I will handle this, Calum." A elder woman of perhaps sixty years emerges from a side office. She is fit despite her age, and her graying hair is cropped in a short bob. Her robe is similar to the acolyte's, but more elaborate and expensive.

"Yes, High Mother," the acolyte, Calum, bows and retreats, leaving you alone with the priestess.

"I am Serise Dremagne, High Mother of this temple. I overheard you, but I have nothing to offer until I know more about you. Who are you, and why are you seeking bounties?" Her blue eyes appraise you closely as you answer.

"Closing time already?" Mikos quips at the tapped Keg. He shakes his head at the priestess to show his disapproval. "I am Mikos this is one of my companions, the loudest one, Bruno. We were traveling up the Crusader Road and heard about your goblin trouble. We thought we might be able to offer some assistance, but the Hellknights seem to be demanding payment of a not insignificant amount for a license to attempt to remedy the situation. Usually one is paid for a service, not charged. It seems to me that offering a bounty on goblins would lead to a quicker resolution than anything I've seen so far."

    Temple of the Golden Key

"Hmm, you are mostly correct, young one," Mother Dremagne nods to Mikos. "Bounties also bring in all sorts of unscrupulous mercenaries and similar deplorables. You can end up exchanging one problem for another."

"The Hellknights are peculiar on certain things, and wildly over-zealous on others. I don't agree with them on many things, but requiring an adventuring licence to keep out vigilantes is good for our town, I believe."

"The Order of the Pike are focused on keeping the roads clear for would-be crusaders like yourselves and supplies going to the front. They are not without limits, however, and they don't have the numbers to guard the road and lead a foray into the Echo Wood. Plus, such an incursion would have unwanted repercussions from our less-than-friendly neighbors. I will not have an open war with Thornkeep."

"However, we all want to see the goblin menace removed, or at least suppressed -- not even a great army would be able to completely root out the spawn of Zog from the Echo Wood. I don't know you well enough to yet entrust with the defense of Fort Inevitable, but I can make you an offer..."

"Find the leader of the goblin bands harassing the Crusader Road and remove the threat, however you see fit. Do this, and bring proof of your success, and I will cover the fee for your Letters of Warrant."

    "Does that sound fair?"

Any inputs for Abernard or the other locations?

You regroup at the inn a short time later. The Juliver Arms is a large and comfortable by anyone's standards, but it stands out in the small town of Fort Inevitable. You are greeted by a paunchy halfing at the door. He stands up from behind his desk and flashes a welcoming smile. "Good day, doughty pilgrims. I am Doliver Reedbank. Welcome to the Juliver Arms. I'm guessing you arrived with the caravan today... we have a handful of rooms available, but they are going fast. 2 silver for a bed in the common room, or 10 for a private room. It may seem a steep rate, but it includes meals... breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, and, of course, supper." He rubs his belly and smacks his lips.

I will update the campaign journal a little later...

"I'll take a room. It sounds like the food will be plentiful anyway and only trail rations ahead." Mikos shrugs and addresses his companions, "Looks like we've still got to put in for the Devilknights' charter so don't go overboard. At least I was able to get the Abadite's pledge to reimburse us for that expense if we take care of the goblin's chief."

I hinted a couple times but maybe not clearly enough... you are cleared to hunt the goblins without a warrant, but further "adventure" would need it.

Also, each private room has 2 beds.

Ben will gladly pay for a private room, splitting the cost with one of his companions.

Heading to Boston for training this week, will be unable to post until Saturday.

"Although, I sensed that if we just stick to killing goblins, we may be cleared from registering for a while anyway."

"I'll split a room with you, Copperbutt."

Rodi gladly puts forth the silver to share a room with someone. Maybe not Benjamin, since he's still not sure about what tea and brothels involve...

"So, where do we go now?"

    M Human (Rostlander) Fighter 4; AC 21, HP 29/52 wounded 1; spot +9

"Well, after a bite to eat, I probably need to pick up some wilderness gear. We won't be travelling with a caravan if we're going to the Spire."

We can assume Ben tells the rest about his meeting with Abernard and the rest.

Mikos takes in Ben's tale and smiles. "Your new friend's offer to pay for information or artifacts sounds like the best deal so far. Let's see if we can find this Iliara and get a little more information."

The mercenary waves over the halfling innkeep. "A room for me and the less prickly dwarf. Rodi, you want the unused half of his bed, huh?" [\b] Mikos laughs and hands over 5 silvers to match Ben's share. [B]"By the way, innkeep, we heard Iliara Starcloak is staying here. Ben knows a friend of hers. Could you tell us where to find her?"

  • "Well, if by prickly ya mean fun loving! That one's likely got something stuck up his arse! There be drinks with this room, wee man?
I'll be staying with crazy hair, but need to check on your devotions to me lord first."

The halfling takes your coins and hands over two large keys. "Room's 12 and 14, upstairs." (5 silver each for the night)

Doliver nods to Bruno, smiling. "We have wine from Caerlin's Vineyard, our local vintner. But if you want something stronger, you'll have to go across the street to the Red Shield or the Helmed Lady."

To Mikos, Doliver's smile fades a touch, but he nods. He gestures towards one of the private booths. There you see a thin, hooded figure enjoying tea and scones.
