The bandit raises his shield to attempt to intercept Varius's incoming attack. He still grunts in pain as the stab is only partially deflected, and his shield takes a bit of damage.

With Basil currently down, you could take his square, but would take an AoO in doing so.

Mona hacks back at the bandit guarding the top of the ladder, but her hit is just a glancing blow. She manages to dodge the brute's retaliatory strikes.

Felitcia quickly moved to get a view of the barn now that she was close enough and quickly sent a spell in at the nearest bandit. The beam of cold lanced out at the thug.

Here's another possibility I mentioned a while back: "I think at this point I'll just remind Basil about the Heroic Recovery use of a Hero Point (p. 24 of the 1.6 update booklet) and see what happens."

Also, I hate to point out--after Varius finally gets some decent attack and damage rolls for the party--that his bandit foe dropped him to the Dying condition moments earlier. I guess the note about Heroic Recovery goes out to him as well.
