Danduun |
Danduun tries to climb again.
climb : 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Then he jumps down and approaches.
Acrobatics : 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Juno Berik |
Juno roars and struggles against the owl bear's grip as she's hoisted off the ground, her feet kicking wildly! She swings her axe at the owlbear's head!
Choosing to attack with her one-handed weapon while grappled. Not power attacking this time.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 2 = 24
Slashing Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Confirming a Critical: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 - 2 = 10
Extra Damage: 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (4, 7) + 6 = 17
GM Rinaldo |
As Danduun climbs up and over the barricade, Juno one-hands her axe and score a major wound on the owlbear. Crit didn't confirm.
Bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Claw 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Claw 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Grab: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
The owlbear bites and claws at Juno, drawing more blood and ending once more with her gripped in its paw. 6 more damage and once again grappled.
As the battle with the owlbear continues, the villagers fire arrows at the woods to the north, hoping to keep back the next wave. A few brave souls venture out to check the paths to the east and west. They discover small bands of bandits hiding, and engage with them as the sound from the woods gets closer.
Suddenly there is a horrible screech as a tengu mounted on an axegeak emerges from the woods and stops a bit in front of Gronkh. He twirls his katana in a flourish as he calls out a battle-cry!
Intimidate: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
>> DC vs Gronkh: 10+2HD+1WIS=13 - Success
>> DC vs Horace: 10+2HD+0WIS=12 - Success
Gronkh and Horace are both shaken for 1 round.
Gronkh is somewhat startled by the display, and the tengu points his katana directly at the half-orc and shouts, "CHALLENGE!"

GM Rinaldo |
@GM, does Gronkh know (or can he see) that the Axebeak has 10' reach?
Yes, he can. I usually assume reach is apparent from viewing a creature unless it has some special ability that specifically makes it not so.
Gronkh Maha |
Incidentally, I think the Intimidate check for Horace would be 4 lower due to him being Large size, but it still (just) beats the DC.
Gronkh squints his eyes at the Tengu. "A challenge, eh? Let's see about that!" Then he spurs Horace into a charge, setting his lance straight for the breast of his foe's mount, while urging the villagers to distract the bandit knight.
mwk lance, charge, shaken, 2 defense points: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 = 11
Using GM reroll
mwk lance, charge, shaken, 2 defense points, stars: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 2 - 2 + 2 + 2 = 29
dmg: 3d8 + 18 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) + 18 = 30
After plunging the tip of his lance into the beast, Gronkh and Horace continue riding past, ready to turn and tilt once again.
Using Ride By Attack feat and remaining 10' away from the foes. The axebeak does not get an AoO (due to Ride By Attack) but the tengu does if he somehow has 10' reach.
Immediate Action to use Mounted Combat to attempt to negate the hit
Ride, shaken: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 2 = 12
mwk lance, shaken: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
dmg: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Gronkh AC (due to charging) is currently 17; Horace AC (due to charging) is currently 12.
Brakkik |
Brakkik moves closer to the well and puts a rock from the ground in his sling.
GM Rinaldo |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Mounted Combat: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
As Gronkh levels his lance at the giant bird, the rider tries to deflect his attack, but is unsuccessful. Gronkh's lance opens up a near-fatal wound in the mount. I knew it was going to be a bad idea to let you have the first charge, but this guy HAD to get his intimidate off! :-)
Juno and Jale are up!
Gronkh Maha |
Since it sounds like the axebeak is still standing, Gronkh will use his final 3 defense points to boost his AC to 20 against the coming counter-charge. Gulp. (Or, can I just declare that I'm using them if I'm attacked?)
GM Rinaldo |
Spending points is a swift/immediate action, so you can tell me that you intend to spend them when attacked and I will only tell you to spend them if you are.
Johnny Brom |
Jale gulps and runs at the owlbear, dagger held high! Double move to avoid AoO. I'm (technically*) threatening so Juno gets those sweet Flanking bonuses. The wayang holds the dagger out in front of him and looks to Juno. "Uh...we got him! Right?"
*1d3-1 damage is very threatening.
Juno Berik |
"Of... course...!" Juno grunts despite her face being smushed up against an owl bear's stinky pelt. She mumbles something else unintelligible and swings her axe again.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 2 - 2 = 19
Slashing Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
GM Rinaldo |
Jale, your current position does not provide flanking bonus -- you have to be directly opposite the person you are flanking with on a medium target. (On larger targets there is a little more flexibility in positioning.) Juno's attack hits anyway, though.
Jale runs around, trying to help Juno by distracting the owlbear. She swings her axe again, and despite being one-handed draws another large gash along its body. Very hurt, but not yet down!
Bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Claw 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Claw 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Grab: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Once more the owlbear bites and claws at Juno, wounding her further and keeping a tight grip. 3 more damage, and again grappled.
The tengu wheels his axebeak around and starts to charge past Gronkh. However, as he reaches Gronkh's side, the axebeak stumbles and passes out! Axebeak was staggered, so the rideby charge ends at the axebeak's single move. He's attacking Gronkh, so Horace can take an AoO.
Attack vs Gronkh: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Ride check to soft fall (DC 15): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 Success
The tengu deftly slashes Gronkh as he rolls off the body of his mount, but a group of villagers who had been slowly making their way around the field dart in and block the attack! One of them takes a nasty gash from the bandit's katana, and his friends quickly pull him away.
The bandit stands to face the Gronkh. "You kill my bird! You die!"
No damage to Gronkh thanks to using Defense Points, but Horace has an AoO coming. The tengu is standing next to you.

Brakkik |
With one more step, Brakkik finally has clear sight of the owlbear. "Here," he yells, "have thish!" He picks up a rock from the ground, then twirls the sling around his head and sends it flying at the monster.
Sling, , PBS, Shooting into melee: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 17
Bludgeoning damage, PBS: 1d2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
GM Rinaldo |
Kill steal!
Brakkik finally sees an opening and sends a rock flying into the fray. It strikes the owlbear on the head, and the monster collapses in a heap.
Owlbear is down, Juno is no longer grappled.
Juno Berik |
Juno -- who hasn't even noticed the piddly little stone -- thinks the owlbear's finally lost its grip on her! She swings her axe at it, attempting to cleave its head clean off!
Attacking the 'definitely-not-defeated' owlbear!
Attack: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 6 - 1 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 3 = 7
"And stay down!"
She looks around, wounded but ready to continue the fight! ...Seeing no other enemies around at the moment she drops her axe and pulls out a potion.
Gronkh Maha |
As the tengu rides by, Horace attempts to bite him...
Horace AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
dmg: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
... but the horse is clearly not accustomed to such a speedy target.
On the Tengu's turn, Gronkh uses an immediate action to spend his final 3 defense points to boost his AC against the Tengu's attack. Whew, good call!
Gronkh nods in appreciation to the villagers that helped him elude the tengu's katana, "Your friend's sacrifice will be avenged!"
Horace bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Horace hoof: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (19) - 2 = 17

Then Gronkh directs Horace to step back 5' so that he can stab at the tengu with his lance.

dmg: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

GM Rinaldo |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Juno heroically frees herself from the grip of the owlbear, and single-handedly fells the beast! And no one will ever convince her otherwise! :-)
Horace bites and kicks at the tengu, but it easily dodges the attacks. However, when Gronkh directs the horse to back up, his lance finds the target easily, piercing the bandit's armor and drawing blood.
Sadaf and Jale are still up.
Sadaf Kargar |
Seeing that Juno is free now Sadaf shakes his head.
”These companionship stories are always so odd until you yourself are in the middle of the story!“ he says looking at Juno and Gronkh.
”Danduun, come back here!“
Dandy, Double moves.
Johnny Brom |
Jale watches Juno finish off the beast, and nods in appreciation. "Good job! Glad I could help!" He hurries off to the hole in the wall, ready to see what's going on outside the wall.
GM Rinaldo |
Katana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Despite his wound, the bandit steps up and continues his assault on Gronkh, though he can't pierce the cavalier's armor.

Things aren't looking good for the bandits. Everyone is up!
Juno Berik |
Juno drinks her potion then pulls out another one.
Healing Juno: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
"Yeah..." Juno pants, a little winded and more than a little wounded. "I had that! ...Totally fine... I'll be right... behind you... Back in the fight in a moment. ...Just a little thirsty."
Johnny Brom |
Jale looks back to Juno and stick out his tongue, which stands out against his shadowy skin. "Come on, slowpoke! This way!" He then hops through the owlbear-sized hole in the wall and runs out of sight.
Brakkik |
Nodding in a satisfied manner, Brakkik heads for the wall and walks up the side. "How'sh it going out there, Gronkh?" he calls.
Double move. Monkey fish should still be active.
Gronkh Maha |
Gronkh slowly rides Horace away from his now axebeak-less foe before turning around and pointing his lance straight at the tengu's heart. "Yield now, varlet, or I shall skewer you like the chicken that you look like!"
Withdraw action from both Horace and Gronkh, does not provoke an AoO.
Gronkh calls out to Brakkik and the others. "Just this one foe, for now. Hopefully he will yield, but if he hides behind his dead mount you may need to pepper him with arrows to encourage him to come out to play..."
Horace paws at the ground and snorts, eager to finish the job.
GM Rinaldo |
As Gronkh backs off to offer surrender, the bandit leader becomes furious. "DIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He runs toward Gronkh, but his legs just aren't quite able to close the distance before you can react ...
Double move toward Gronkh. Everyone is up!
Gronkh Maha |
Gronkh now issues a challenge of his own. "Well then, chicken face, you have made your choice!" Swift action Challenge
charge, higher ground, lance: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
dmg, spirited charge, challenge: 3d8 + 21 ⇒ (7, 2, 2) + 21 = 32

lance: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
dmg, challenge: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Ride to negate: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Juno Berik |
Juno drinks her second potion then picks up her axe.
Healing Juno: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
"Yeah, that'll do."
Johnny Brom |
Jale runs forward, shaking his head. "Foolish."
If that sucker lives through 32 damage, this little wayang will pee his pants for his standard action.
GM Rinaldo |
Seeing that the bandit has no intention of surrendering, Gronkh lowers his lance and charges. The lance hits the tengu square in the chest, piercing his armor, his torso, and the back side of his armor. Several yards later, Gronkh brings Horace to a halt, the bandit's corpse impaled on the end of his lance.
In the distance, you hear a few scattered "caws" as a few bandits who had been watching turn and flee. The villagers cheer, and thank you with tears in their eyes.
At the end of the day, a number of villagers who came to your assistance have been wounded, and two have died. Despite this, the villagers are grateful, and through Je Tsun they tell you they are glad they were able to participate in the defense of their town, even at the cost of some of their own. The honored fallen will be buried in the hills overlooking the home they gave their lives for; nonetheless, Nesting Swallow celebrates its victory. For the first time in years, the village looks forward to living free of banditry.
Je Tsun honors her bargain, isolating herself in her home with the Braid of a Hundred Masters for a day and a night. When she emerges with a smile, the braid is restored to its ancient potency. Even now, activated, the use of the relic is difficult to discern, but Pathfinders in the Lantern Lodge in Goka are undoubtedly eager to begin their work examining the powerful item.
Gronkh Maha |
Gronkh rides over to where the bandit chieftain has fallen and looks down with little pity. "You were brave, bird-brain, but foolish to believe that you could stand against us." Then he rides over to check upon the fallen axebeak and the other bandits' horses, to tend to them and see if they can be healed of their wounds.
Thanks for running, GM! That was a great ride!
Sadaf Kargar |
Sadaf is glad that he was able to be part of such an epic tale.
”My family forced me down the merchant path and due to their long tradition as part of the Exchange within the Society I always have a home ... but these long weeks together with you all have shown me how much I enjoy traveling with friends - as different as we are - we are a great team!“ he says smiling and gives Danduun a pat.
Juno Berik |
Juno loots the dead.
Thoroughly.
In the coming days she revels in the sure-to-come attention from her heroic deeds.
Johnny Brom |
Jale approaches Gronk, giving him a hug. "You did so good! So brave, outside the walls!" He then moves to Sadaf. "Your friend is very scary, but you are nice. So, it's ok." He gives a little smile to the dino then scurries away. The wayang moves up to Brakkik and bows. "Your science is astounding, I do not know how you figure such things out. Try not to blow yourself up." Finally, he moves to Juno, speaking with hesitation. "While I do not like all of the things you do, I am very impressed with how well you do them. Thank you for your protection."
