Since it was brought up in the gameplay thread, I wanted to discuss initiative blocks.
Except in cases where I have literally dozens of mooks (which happens occasionally), I roll every combatant's initiative separately. I then sort the rolls and divide the combat card into "friend" and "foe" blocks. When a block comes up, everyone in that block can act in any order, so you don't have to wait for a single person before posting. I then take the posted actions, and if it makes sense to re-order them I do (such as Jale casting sleep after Brakkik threw a bomb - at a table, Jale would have suggested that Brakkik delay until after him).
If the top and bottom blocks are both friend or both foe, or when an entire block is taken out of the combat, I collapse the blocks for simplicity. A side effect of this is that on round 1, people who rolled top initiative go, then at the end they are suddenly in the same block as the ones who rolled lowest initiative.
When there are just one or two enemies, what ends up happening is that the high rollers act, then the enemy, then it becomes an alternation of party and enemy. If a high roller happens to post before a low roller, it can seem like they are getting more actions than the others, but it's just an illusion - everyone gets the same number of actions as they would if we went strictly in order.

Most of you probably didn't need that explanation, but I wanted to make sure how it works was clear. :-)

No problems here - I was just amused that Brakkik threw three bombs before some folks in the party could post anything.

![]() |

You are right, but at the end up to mid levels it is not really important who goes first in one initiative block.

GM Rinaldo |

Big issues at work this morning, there may or may not be a post today. Also, I will be working a small convention this weekend, so there may or may not be a post Saturday or Sunday. :-)

![]() |

Yes, really don't worry! RL always first!

GM Rinaldo |

Sorry guys - I ended up sick on Monday, and now I'm playing catch-up at work. Next update will probably be late this afternoon or this evening.

GM Rinaldo |

Heads up to all of my PbP games: things are going to slow down a bit for the next two weeks.
November 7-9 I will be attending a professional conference. I will be unable to post at all during the day but may get a chance to check in during the evening.
November 13-16 I will be on vacation at a board game convention in Texas. I may post before bed some nights, but then again may not. ;-)

Hi GM, are we going to finish this game before Nov 19?

![]() |

Hey guys, I’m going to have a crazy busy weekend. It’s unlikely I’ll be able to post Saturday, and I definitely won’t be able to post Sunday. Sorry if I hold up the game. Feel free to bot me if needed.
Thanks!

GM Rinaldo |

As I've mentioned, this is not a game day game. I never intended to complete by the game day deadline. I am getting ready for my vacation, so there will be at most a post or two over the next week. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear when the subject first came up.

GM Rinaldo |

Sorry if that came across more curt than I intended. Tired from three days of conference and getting ready for my week away. :-)

And hoping that you will continue with parts 2 and 3 after this one! And no rush as far as I'm concerned. Happy to have a relaxed pace.

GM Rinaldo |

Back from a lovely vacation and facing a mountain of email and backlogged issues. I hope to get my games resumed this evening after work!
And yes, I fully intend to run the whole series. It's one of my favorites!

GM Rinaldo |

That concludes Part 1 of the Quest for Perfection. Chronicles will be up a little later today, and I'll give you time for shopping and possible leveling before part 2.

GM Rinaldo |

Zelrora, Gronkh, and Juno, I need your day job rolls or alternate downtime activity.
Sadaf, you listed your ID as 314670-16 but that is coming up as Xiao Katsu. Can you confirm the number for me?

![]() |

Day Job Profession (merchant): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 10 gp
Thanks for running, GM! Gronkh will be leveling up before the next scenario - will try to do so in the next few days.

GM Rinaldo |

I just need Juno's day job/downtime then I can finalize and post the chronicles.

GM Rinaldo |

Ok then!
Get them while they're fresh and hot!
Let me know when you have completed updating for part two, including leveling up and any purchases you want to make. Please post a new set of Chronicle Data even if it hasn't changed, so that I have them all in one place for part 2.

I will be completely off the grid from Thursday (Dec. 6) to Tuesday (Dec. 11). Please bot me as needed.

GM Rinaldo |

Sorry about the delay, I am getting all my pieces for part 2 lined up. I intend to get started this evening.

![]() |

Just a reminder that I'll be completely offline from tomorrow to late Tuesday. Please bot me as needed. I've added some simple botting instructions at the top of my profile: basically, if mounted, try to charge (using Ride by attack, Spirited Charge, and Mounted Combat to negate hits on the horse), if not mounted, use a falchion 2 handed. Gronkh has little in the ways of skills to contribute but will happily go into battle as needed. Thanks.

GM Rinaldo |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Gotcha. You will be spending a lot of time on the boat in this scenario, so while Horace will be there, there probably won't be much mounted charging. (But be patient, your time is coming! :-) )

GM Rinaldo |

Sorry folks, I'm not feeling well. I have just enough concentration to stare at TV or video games, not enough to judge and post here. Back soon!

![]() |

This weekend my family’s going to be super busy so I’m not going to have a chance to make a post. I should be back to regular posting by Monday evening. Feel free to bot me if necessary.
Thanks!

![]() |

Apologies for the delay in posting. I got home last night but found wife and child both sick, was up much of the night with my daughter, and am only finally getting a moment at the computer now. Thanks for botting me
