Oh, I thought once you said to take a powerful blow it was too late to defend.

Sure, I'll edit. Incoming.

---------

Done.

No, I'm pretty sure that's what the defend action is there for (though you can defend against other things, like being insulted or verbally attacked as well).

At a table IRL, I can see interjecting with defend moves happening more often. Here on the boards, I'm going to have to resolve these things in post order.

So going forward, if there's an environmental danger, villain move, or similar event that calls for someone to take a powerful blow, then someone else on the scene can pop in with a defend if it makes sense (sometimes it won't -- Bear can't stop a psychic attack, for example).

However, defending a powerful blow coming off of a directly engage move? Not sure. If you want to defend those, let's see how it plays out in the narrative. It might look like great teamwork, or it might be annoying. We'll see if it's used a lot, and I'll revisit that.

Oh, and I will say that Isaiah doesn't mistrust Mosaic. For Team purposes. She's proved pretty dependable, minor showboating tendencies aside.
Also discounting her ninjaing of posts.

Well, Shin advances again after two shockingly high rolls. Hopefully he'll get underneath Shard's skin with his 'The Reason You Suck' speech.

His way of acting to prove Shard wrong is to point out that everything he's doing is showing how inferior he feels to other people with powers greater than his own, and that he's unfit to lead without a clear cut plan of how to actually rule over even Halcyon.

And with that last miss I get my first advancement. Yay!

Do I get it immediately or after a rest?

I think Gallowglass is the only one who hasn't done anything yet this panel.

posted anyway, Gallowglass can catch up.

And Gallowglass, you can either take the advancement now, or you can pick up something later if there's a story reason for the new advancement that you'd like to write about. It's up to you.

Posted my catch-up + current panel.

I chose another Beacon move:
Won't Let You Down:
When you help a teammate, you can spend 2 out of the team pool to add +2 to their roll.

I was wondering, do we know where Attraction is?

She's floating near the ceiling.

Oh, and 'cause I wasn't particularly explicit with the Opportunity I was providing: I'm fine with it just going to Team Pool, but if Shard is prone to putting up a sudden wall that would invalidate other people's attempts at attacking him, I wanted to keep open a window for others to maintain the attack regardless.

I was wondering about advancement myself. I was actually hoping that if Hoshiko were to switch sides, then to take the Mentor advancement...with Hoshiko as his mentor. Because who better to help him learn radiation powers than another radiation user? Course it would require her to not be an evil henchwoman.

It hasn't really come up until now, but Inquiry/Isaiah are entirely capable of being absolutely ruthless when the chips are down and less merciless options are exhausted. They much prefer to play nice and avoid hurting people, but against someone they know is a murderer, and who won't stop unless they make him stop, the gloves can come off very quickly and abruptly indeed. Iron Federation AIs really hate having to go the Cold Equation route, but are capable of it when they run out of third options. If maiming someone saves lives, they'll do it; legs can be replaced. And while it hasn't gotten there yet; if one must die so that a thousand may live, and all alternatives have been exhausted... then the one's death will be made quick, efficient, and painless, and then they will sincerely mourn the necessity.

Just some interesting psychology that may come up eventually.

As you're playing the Outsider it totally makes that Isaiah's got alterations moral boundaries than the rest of the team. Just like how Shin has a different perspective and agenda because of when he comes from.

It's the way Shin thinks will protect her, both from Shard and Trapdoor, and from herself because she's shown that she's very much willing to punch first, ask questions later. But he's also gambling on that it's too small for Trapdoor to open a door in it and not get a face full of concentrated radiation.

By the way, Stalwart, a question about taking +1 Forward - two actually. First, does it carry over to beyond the scene, like when encountering Shard somewhere else? Second, do multiple instances of +1 Forward stack, like with Shin, or does one get canceled out?

Some moves describe your character getting hold as a result of the move, such as “hold 1” or “hold 3.” These are temporary points you can spend according to the move, often with the phrase “spend hold one-for-one,” meaning “spend one point of hold for one effect as the move describes.” Usually hold has to be spent during a given conversation or scene, but moves tell you how long you have before the hold expires. If there’s ambiguity, ask the GM for clarification.

Other moves describe your character “taking +1 forward” or “taking +1 ongoing.” +1 forward means your character gets +1 to the next applicable roll; +1 ongoing means your character gets +1 to all applicable rolls moving forward, as the move describes. The move always indicates how long these bonuses last.

Ah, yes; I had been meaning to ask how long Belong in Two Worlds' hold lasts. Isaiah/Inquiry never did spend that second point a while ago, and it would make a great Chekhov's gun right now.

Multiple bonuses stack, but a roll can never have more than a +4 bonus or a -3 penalty.

Isaiah, your hold would be gone now. Holds generally last to the end of the scene or major plot point. They don't linger indefinitely.

Alright, done. I think Gallowglass is who we're waiting for now.

Also, realized I should maybe have asked clarification on that instead of using redundant rolling. Oh well. This way the GM can choose which one he thinks is more suitably dramatic. Which in this case means either really impressive or complete failure, due to the way the rolls worked out.

I'll post tonight. Stalwart, is you see this before I post, it'd be great to have you rule on Isaiah's post. In particular, did he successfully protect me from the grenade?

Thanks

Redirecting grenades appears to be a task that is confusing to contemplate. Is it protecting the people the grenade was aimed at? Engaging the people you throw it at afterward? Or, in this case, overridden by modifications made to the grenade? Too many different possibilities at once. At the same time, grenade hot potato is totally something done, both in real life and comic books.

Yeah, Gallowglass, I didn't call for a specific move when I dropped the grenade -- Isaiah very appropriately called it a hot potato. Basically a threat to be dealt with in some form or fashion. Since Isaiah has pretty much neutralized it's threat, you're free to do whatever else in the scene that you'd like to try to pull off.

Because I feel like offering a more in-depth explanation of Isaiah's little gizmo here; It operates and functions primarily by working around physics via magical means. It isn't really directly changing the grenade blast into water; rather the energy in the grenade is being used to power a pinhole portal to an elsewhere that just happens to be filled with vast quantities of water, with the amount pouring forth being proportional to the energy available to hold the portal open. The good old conjuration workaround, in other words.

Yes, I like thinking things through more than necessary at times.

Also, more worldbuilding!

Iron Federation government:

The Iron Federation normally uses a fairly decentralized government scheme, with each Shard being self-governing via whatever system works best for its inhabitants. Some Shards are single gestalt entities, others are more democratic or even dictatorial. However, every Shard must obey certain overarching laws, particularly regarding individual rights, prohibitions against certain extremely dangerous or outright evil technologies and magics, and a number of baseline laws calculated to ensure smooth operation of the civilization and prevent factional conflicts from becoming violent. This leads to a lot of diversity, and individuals have the option of migrating to a Shard with a form of government they prefer. This wide diversity is actually intentionally cultivated, as the Federation as a whole continually seeks for improvements in the hopes that they may eventually find a form of governance that will be appreciated by all.

However, Federation-wide decisions still need to be made, and overaching laws altered, added, or removed on occasion. For these tasks, the Iron Federation holds regularly scheduled Full Gestalts every now and then; during these events, nearly every AI (and any organics willing to use some specialized VR gear) all join together into a single, massive gestalt entity; a being that for all intents and purposes IS the Iron Federation in its entirety. Such a gestalt cannot be maintained for long, due bothruly ridiculous energy requirements and inherent instabilitiy from trillions upon trillions of individual viewpoints, but during its short time of existance, the Full Gestalt has access to the computational power and collective knowledge of an entire inter-galctic civilization, and it puts it to use making the BIG decisions. As a collective entity, the Full Gestalt is truly democratic, every intelligence having an equal say, and the only ones unrepresented are those that intentionally excluded themselves from the process. A Full Gestalt can also be called in the case of universal-scale threats, but such events are exceedingly rare. Still, there was a time when the Iron Federation had to pull together to devise a way to kill off an omnicidal Elder God. Suffice to say that it didn't go well for the Elder God.

A Full Gestalt will definately have to be called at some time when it is most inconvenient for Inquiry/Isaiah to be out of it for an hour. Just giving GM ideas. Though do note that they are meticulously scheduled (they have to be, to work at all), so he will have significant warning.

A bit of world building of my own!

Praetor Tower:
The Tower of the Praetorian is a multi-purpose facility that stretches high into the Halcyon sky, and is a prominent feature easily recognizable in any skyline view of the city.

A few decades ago, the Taylor Family opened up the first few floors to the public, turning the foundations of the building into a High-End shopping plaza. The finest fashions from around the world are available for sale here, and part of the Taylor Family Fortune is generated here by the rent paid by the various shop tenants. While Halcyon Mall still sees the largest consumer traffic for run of the mill stores, Praetor Plaza is where the high end stuff thrives, and celebrities are often seen in stores inside. This isn't to say that your average citizen doesn't shop here as well, but mostly your common-every-day Middle Class folk are here to window shop, celebrity hunt, or are here as a tourist.

The third floor is one large nightclub, where many young supers go to relax and mingle socially, as use of powers is strictly forbidden, no matter how mundane. This is enforced by a robotic security detail that has managed to quickly and effectively put an end to any super-powered bar fights that try to happen, with the Praetorian himself only having to get involved in one altercation that got out of hand about twenty years ago. Since then, everyone generally respects that main rule.

The fourth-eighth floors are parking garage for those visiting the shops and club. And above that, nobody in the public realm knows. But from outside, the tower stretches up another 22 levels, with the Upper floors being confirmed as the private residences of the Taylor Family.

The uppermost floor is a security detail to provide protection from aerial threats, with an access to the main structure. There is also a landing pad for aerial vehicles of various types.

Then the Penthouse is the residence of the Taylor Family, namely the Praetorian, Ultra-Star, Kayla and Shane, as well as the now revealed Eternia, Kayla's great-grandmother and wife to the original Praetorian.

Below that, a couple levels are dedicated as guest suites for extended family and guests. Think lavish 5-star hotel.

The next two levels are private ancillary facilities for the Praetorian superhero stuff. Private Gym, training facilities, Situation Room, Meeting Room, etc.

The next level down is for support staff to the family. Cooks, housekeeping, maintenance, etc.

The remaining levels are for Research and Development, private offices, and the like, but the full details of these are still somewhat nebulous and open to DM/Player additions later. ;-P
