As Nox messes around with the device, he finally disconnects two wires and everything becomes dark and silent—lights turn out, the sound of hissing gas subsides, and—most importantly—the klaxons end.

This benefit is short-lived, however, as soon thereafter the facility takes on a reddish hue as the klaxons once more resume, but not as fervently as previously. Backup generator—but the klaxons’ penalty to Perception is now halved.

Over the course of the next minute, the gas in the Organics Lab diffuses and the Seekers can see clearly once more.

Sorry that I was vague, I meant that all of the power went out and that a backup energy supply activated that sent power back to the lights and the klaxons.

With little place else to go, the Pathfinders go through the door labeled:

TERMINATED EXPERIMENTS

@Nox: not locked, not trapped.

Thick glass columns filled with brackish liquid and masses of stringy flesh occupy numerous niches along this hall. At the end of the dim hall, books and sheaves of loose paper cram a wall of shelves.

Identification for the things in the tubes:

Knowledge (planes) 21+:
These creatures, despite their appearance, are known as Owbs. These mysterious creatures from the Plane of Shadows despise any and all light, for they relish in the freezing cold of the void. Their only true relationship with other non-owbs is with the Dark Folk, who treat the owbs as proxies to gods. The owbs’ hatred of all light is contagious, for any creature touched by an owb must succeed at a Fort save or lose all coloration and gain the Light Blindness universal monster weakness. This curse can be removed with Break Enchantment or Remove Curse, unless the subject has the dark folk subtype, in which case removal requires Wish or similar magic.

However, it appears as if someone were forcibly trying to combine these owbs together, as each tube contains two owbs that have been merged together at the head or hip. Additionally, they do not seem to be moving at all; it’s likely that the process that combined the owbs also killed them.

Knowledge (planes) 26+:
Owbs are capable of coalescing darkness into a chilling ball of fire that radiates shadows. It can throw this ball as a ranged touch attack with a range of 120’ and deals 3d6 cold damage.

Knowledge (planes) 27+:
Owbs always seem inexplicably tied to the Plane of Shadows itself, which has confounded planar scholars for centuries—until the truth was discovered. It seems that Owbs contain an infinitesimal divine capability, leading many to speculate that Owbs are the shattered remnants of some long forgotten pantheon of demigods from the plane.

It seems that by merging these Owbs together, it caused the divine essence within them to exponentially increase their power. Any cold damage that they deal is half divine damage (similar to Flame Strike) and their chilling ball of fire deals 6d6 cold/divine damage and thrice per day they can cause the ball to explode upon impact, dealing 6d6 cold/divine damage to all creatures within 10’ of the initial target (reflex halves)—or rather it would have granted them that power increase if they had survived the process.

Knowledge (planes) 32+:
Owbs have always been creatures of subtle manipulation, but the act of combining the Owbs together has resulted in an increased psychic capacity—these owbs are not actually dead, but rather have ascended to a higher state of consciousness, effectively leaving their bodies comatose.

Additionally, combining the owbs has granted them the ability to transfer the pain it has experienced into a subject by intensifying the pain the subject feels. If these conjoined Owbs hit a creature with two or more claw attacks, then the victim must make a Will save (mind-affecting fear effect) or experience horrific visions. If hit by two claws then the visions staggers the target for 1 round. If hit by three claws then the visions stuns the target for 1 round. If hit by all four claws then the visions stuns the target for 1 round and deals 1d2 Wisdom drain.

Knowledge (planes) 37+:
Owbs are constantly under the effect of Blur; can cast Deeper Darkness, Detect Thoughts, and Dust of Twilight each at will; Shadow Step 5 times per day; and Plane Shift (self only, to or from Plane of Shadow only) once per day. However, due to the dual nature of these conjoined Owbs, they are unable to use their Plane Shift Spell-Like Ability. Additionally, their greater divine power that came from their merging has also caused their Deeper Darkness Spell-Like Ability to be heightened to 5th level, meaning that a simple Daylight can only increase the light level to regular darkness (as opposed to supernatural darkness that’s actually not how that interaction works, but that’s how the scenario says it works, so that’s how it works).

Nox looks at the things with combination of horror and reverence... as a wayang, his people come from the plane of shadow as well, though they do not worship the Owbs as the darkfolk do, the stories of their possible divinity is still a thing that would have been talked about by their scholars.

As Kaldane mentions "Deeper Darkness" he tilts his head and questions...

"Maybe we won't have to fight them, Nox."
But really, what are the odds of that?
"Their bodies are in glass tubes, but it seems their souls are not present. If they should awaken, we can deal with them. I can see through my Echolocation while it lasts, and then I have some skill at fighting what I cannot see after it ends. And also a potion of Darkvision. I do not like fighting at a disadvantage."
I think Géatan has a scroll or oil of Daylight which by the rules of this scenario would bring Deeper Darkness up to ordinary darkness.
Sir Hendric takes a standard action to switch his fullplate for his silken ceremonial armor with the Armiger's Panoply so that he can use arcane scrolls without risk of failure.
Then he reads a scroll of Shield, storing the spell in his cracked vibrant purple prism ioun stone.

As the Pathfinders scan through the piles of notes, they realize just how grossly unorganized these files are—it’s going to take significantly longer than anticipated to sort through this mess.

The matter of the research notes are handled using the Research subsystem found on page 148 of Ultimate Intrigue (you can also find it here, if you CTR+F for the word “pharaoh” then you’ll come to the start of the relevant subsystem), with the following modifications: it takes one hour of research instead of eight to make a check, and any number of people can aid the primary roller. And before anyone asks: considering that the incense only last for 10 minutes, it requires a whopping 6 doses to take 20 on a single check, as well as spend ten minutes per dose inhaling the incense—use at your own risk.

The research check skills for the Facility Records are: Craft (alchemy), Knowledge (arcana, dungeoneering, or planes)

Additionally, the Facility Records make several references in the Dark Folk language, meaning that you must know the language or make a DC 25 Linguistics check to even make a check And as far as I can tell, Tongues only lets you speak the language, not read it; sorry Tortuga.

Sir Hendric skims through the papers and looks around with some concern.
"How long do we want to take on this? Professor Kramolag isn't here, and could be up to anything. Destroying more evidence, or escaping with other experiments."
Kaldane has +29 Planes, the highest modifier for any of the skills, but nobody else has it so we would not be able to Aid Another. The rest of us would be sitting around waiting for hours while Kaldane read the material.

GM Interpretation: you all would be aiding Kaldane’s research check, not his Knowledge (planes) check—meaning that as long as you’re rolling any of the skills needed for the research check then you can aid. I.e. Kaldane can roll Planes and Hendric can aid by rolling a Craft (alchemy) even though it’s not the same skill.

For ease of play I’ll roll for Kaldane and anyone who wishes to aid can say that they do so; as far as I can tell he should only have a +20—I don’t know where that last 9 came from. Also keep in mind that while being able to read Dark Folk is not required, there are a good number of files that are written in the language, so not being able to speak it means some lost context, so if anybody has any method of allowing someone to read Dark Folk, speak now.

Kaldane's extra +9 is from his Cha bonus, for a 33 on that Research check. The +9 doesn't apply all the time, only when he has access to the right wandering spirit - which he does today as evidenced by his earlier Planes check. 15 ranks, +3 class skill, +2 racial, +9 Cha = +29. The research rules also say that subject to GM discretion other ability score bonuses might apply to the KP damage, and they specifically note Oracle/Shaman abilities. So that could be 1d12+9 KP.
Sir Hendric can try a Linguistics check to decipher the Dark Folk language. He encountered them a long time ago, but did not pick up a rank in the language.

Ah. Shaman spirits. I never understand those. I’ll take that into account now.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Whoops! Forgot that the Tongues thing was my house-rule; Tortuga can technically “...understand the language of any intelligent creature...” so I have to go by it as-written since it’s PFS. So the Dark Folk issue is irrelevant. Additionally, Kaldane got most of the information, but any aids are going to be ultimately irrelevant, so I’m just going to roll for him again and tell you guys all of the information at once.

Kaldane Research: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (12) + 29 = 41
KP Damage: 1d12 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

What you all learn, organized by thresholds (you all learned everything) Sorry for the redundancy of information; I forgot that I wasn’t supposed to put certain information in the check to identify the owbs. Well, you learned it anyway, so it’s all good.:

20 KP Threshold:
The majority of the files here document research conducted by or under the direction of one Professor Kramolag. The earliest work focuses on aquatic creatures, but increasingly turns to include subterranean flora. The objective ranges from simple documentation to practical uses of rare natural distillations. Supplementary notes
allude to Kramolag conducting and later funding expeditions into the Darklands. One refers to an
encounter with dark creepers and their dark stalker leader, people who refer to themselves as the caligni. An anthropological diversion documents at least 30
communities of caligni living in the Darklands beneath Nidal, along with much of their biologically distinct caste system, culture, and religion.

15 KP Threshold:
One of Kramolag’s agents reports having lived among the caligni—an arrangement a settlement of dark
creepers supported but that was opposed by the leaders of the community’s faith. Those who can read Dark Folk also learn that the caligni priests are often referred to as dark called, and they do not worship conventional deities
of darkness but rather a strange god creature that lives among them.

10 KP Threshold:
Kramolag, with the support of well-funded backers, continues to finance raids on caligni communities. At several of the sites, her agents have captured creatures called owbs, which are enigmatic natives of the Shadow Plane that exert a strange influence over the caligni. Professor Kramolag redirected her resources toward understanding owbs and their inexplicable powers. Her research slowed to a crawl as she paid a favor to someone named Suliji Peshar, but her work soon resumed.

5 KP Threshold:
Kramolag’s exhaustive study of the owbs’ unique physiologies, their fundamental connection to the Plane of Shadow, and bizarre psychologies yielded encouraging
results. Those who can read Dark Folk also learn that Kramolag posited that owbs are “splinter deities,” fragments of one or more mysterious, otherworldly
consciousnesses that could be pieced back together like a broken vase. She suspected that by drawing upon her distant funders’ deep pockets, she might gather the
resources to succeed.

0 KP Threshold:
In order to properly experiment on the owbs,
Kramolag invested in new equipment for her private laboratory, which she refers to as the “god lab.” A packet of dense and meticulously written notes detail complex experiments involved in the small, seemingly unimportant room in the facility’s southeast corner. Written in a different hand are the following instructions: “To access the god lab, remember that when in the ethereal southeast, the lurker at the threshold shall be mine.” The PCs also recover a scroll of see invisibility and a scroll of true seeing.

Those who can read Dark Folk also find a report that the owbs seemed knowledgeable but resented their
captivity. They were able to listen to conversations and sometimes even conversed with researchers who dared to express their dislike of Kramolag and her strategies.
Following the early recombination experiments—the records of which are now kept only in the Kramolag’s
private lab below—the owbs appeared to be comatose, yet
maintained a hint life and awareness. The PCs learn that
the dark columns here contain the owb experiments, and it is possible to telepathically commune and learn unrecorded secrets from them as if they were a second library As it’s telepathic, you aren’t required to know the Dark Folk language to make a check.

Council of Shadows Research Skills: Diplomacy, Knowledge (planes), Sense Motive

Additionally, a raven comes down and perched on Hendric’s shoulder before dropping an envelope and flying away.

Hendric:
Interesting discovery, it seems that each of the researchers acquiesced to powerful mental and psychological conditioning before being shepherded to Wingless Rock, and those who leave and return often seem to have forgotten much of what they were working on before they left. A common theory is that each of them has a contingent memory-altering effect that afflicts them whenever they leave the lab for too long. A less-favorable theory is that the tarry fluids they were handling from the Darklands seemed to have an effect on one’s memories, making them remember new things and forget others. It may just be a side-effect of their work conditions or it could be something more sinister—we’ll keep checking.

"Suliji Pashar. The S.P. from the dragon's notes? The dragon said 'Su...ji...' as she died. Suliji gave Kramolag's notes on the Sun Orchard Elixir to Loaralis. That's an important connection.
I think we have the key to that puzzle of the blank tiles. It was in that room in the southeast, correct? This note seems to suggest we can find 'the lurker at the threshold' in the Ethereal plane there. And I assume these scrolls are the way to perceive the Ethereal and enter the 'god lab'."

How fast would this telepathic research be? If communing with the owbs would take hours more, I would prefer to go to the God Lab now and maybe come back to chat with them later.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

It would take hours more, but you all have learned already that Kramolag is much more concerned about keeping her experiments secret than she is about even saving her own staff--and Hendric in-game is certainly smart enough to make this logical connection: Will they even be here to chat with later? Ultimately your guys' choice, though.

Knowledge (arcana) 15:
The spells See Invisibility and True Seeing grant the user the ability to see vaguely into the Ethereal Plane if concentration is kept.

Knowledge (religion) 20:
"The Lurker at the Threshold" is the name of an avatar of the Outer God Yog-Sothoth, the Watcher at the Gate. Yog-Sothoth is believed to be an all-knowing, all-seeing entity that stands coterminous to the Material Plane--some may say the Great Beyond itself--and is not just in control of space and time, but is the space-time continuum personified. As an outsider looking in, Yog-Sothoth is able to see all things that occur everywhere, and has a capacity for knowledge that borders on, if not is, omniscient.

And don't forget about the letter, Hendric.

I say we talk to them. We've contained the breach issue, and it seems rather plain that the Doctor isn't here, or there would have been greater issues before now. The last thing I want is for us to set off some sort of detonation or self destruct when we venture into the god lab and lose access to this information. Kaldane takes to research with a relish he hasn't felt since his initiate days before his confirmation. It's interesting piecing the puzzle together, but he is sure that when the spirit leaves him, most of his zest for learning will go as well.

Kaldane makes detailed translated notes of what he discovered at Hendric's suggestion, which he then hands to Hendric.

"I agree with Nox. I think we can learn a great deal more about the current situation, but we should be prepared in case it backfires. This likely means we should only have one or two people communicate with them, and will likely mean that I should be one of them."

As he talks, Kaldane unbuckles both his sword belt and ties his spell component pouch to it. He then hands them to Hendric.

"This won't make me completely a lack of a threat, but it will limit my options if it comes to that."

Well, Hendric, sounds like you’ve been outvoted. Gonna assume you guys want Kaldane as the primary roller, because he has the highest bonus to both the research check and to KP damage. 15 KP Threshold:
The captive owbs know of Professor Kramolag as the “Remaker in Pain,” listening as she dictated notes
stored in her “god lab.” She sought to distill the divine essence within each one of them to create something greater and whole.

10 KP Threshold:
The Remaker in Pain claimed success in her research, distilling multiple owbs into a vital but volatile essence brimming with potential. Her curiosity was not sated, though, and she repeated the process. She voiced frustration about someone named Suliji Peshar and corresponded several times with someone named Doctor Mais.

Linguistics 30:
You recall a similar name from the facility records and are able to find and decipher its accompanying text: Doctor Mais and Professor Kramolag are associated not with the Aspis Consortium but with an organization known as Conference Z Which I accidentally already told you..., a coalition of research institutions found throughout the Inner Sea Region.

0 KP Threshold:
As you all look onward, you see Kaldane open his eyes, and in his eye sockets are two orbs of pure, empty blackness.

Kaldane, check your PMs!

Suddenly, all of the owbs in the glass tanks grasp at each of their heads, undulating as if in pain. A thrashing pain enters everyone’s heads, except for Kaldane. A cacophony of voices overwhelms the Seekers’ minds.

Kaldane’s word resonates throughout the chamber in in the minds of every being within. The black orbs in Kaldane’s eyes expand, encasing the aasimar in a giant ball of darkness. The ball shrinks to an infinitesimal size, leaving Kaldane behind. Kaldane, however, has had all color drained from his person—even more so than Nox—and looks more haggard and lean than how he was before.

Kaldane:
You have chosen to initiate the catalyst of a corruption. Kaldane gains the Shadowbound corruption, the eerie perception manifestation, and a manifestation level of 1. This will be reflected on your chronicle sheet.

Whaaat? You think that I would possess Kaldane in-game and then send him PMs telling him exactly what to do so it would sow doubt within the party?! How absurd! Mwahahahaha!!!

In all seriousness, though, Kaldane is 100% himself and not lying in the slightest.

"Take them down!"
Sir Hendric issues a challenge to one of the creatures (Pink/Magenta) and unleashes a full attack.
We know from Kaldane's Knowledge check that they are constantly under a Blur effect. Factoring that in.

Primary, Challenge, PA, Cover, Higher Ground: 1d20 + 24 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 24 - 4 + 1 = 30
