Naala and Exiel put the hurt on Ralph, with a critical bite followed by a critical stab! He goes down with a whimper.
Leo staggers to his feet into the space between Exiel and Constantin, provoking attacks of opportunity from all of you except Sue. If he somehow survives, he turns on Constantin and attempts to bite him.
Leo's bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
And misses.
Unable to see 42, Don shuffles over and tries to blind and trip Constantin instead. [ooc}(Constantin, you get to take up to 3 attacks of opportunity on him if you have any left.)[/ooc]
Blind attempt: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Trip attempt 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Trip attempt 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
If he survives the attacks of opportunity, Don will manage to trip Constantin. Mike steps up to flank Constantin with Leo and attempts to bite and claw at Constantin.
Bite: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30 +4 if Constantin is prone
Slam 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16 +4 if Constantin is prone
Slam 2: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18 +4 if Constantin is prone
(Will need to see the attacks of opportunity before resolving damage, but we can proceed with your next actions at the same time.)

Ummm... Just letting you know, my CMD at present is 29 (as reflected in my tag-line), so as far as I can tell, that means none of those combat maneuvers worked?

My tag-line gives my current stats.
Under the 'currently active spells' tab, it lists my current buffs, which include Barkskin (+3 NA), and Shield of Faith (+3 Deflection, but I only get an additional +2 because I have a RoP +1 - as per the CMD rules, deflection adds to your CMD, so that is where I get the net +2 to CMD from).

With just one demon left, the whole lot of you dog-pile him and leave him bloodied and battered on the floor.
A quick search of the bodies reveals that only the ettin had anything of real value (your group has more than enough spellcraft so I'll skip the tedious identification):
potion of reduce person
wand of levitate (19 charges)
As you proceed further down the passage, you see that crude stone stairs twist through this winding passage. The temperature drops sharply and a rime of hoarfrost settles upon the walls. About 100ft in, you find a shut wooden door on the right side of the passage, and a short excursion a little further reveals a second door on the right side of the passage another 150ft down, though this second door is open, spilling light into the frosted passageway. Both doors are are carved with the image of a pretty young woman standing in a tangled field of blossoming wildflowers

You head to the open door and find stone stairs lead into a narrow, rectangular chamber filled with the overwhelming stink of urine. The walls and floor are haphazardly covered with countless lines of jagged runes. Two short flights of stairs climb to small platforms at either end of the chamber.
A wooden chest secured with a heavy chain and a solid lock sits atop the western platform.

You actually have not tested the closed wooden door, so you don't know whether or not it is locked. It is just closed for the moment. As for the chest, the lock is on the chain itself, not on the chest. If you sundered the chain or the lock on the chain, the chest should open easily enough. As far as you can tell, anyway.

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24
If he finds none, he asks either 42 or Constantin to sunder the chain, and then positions himself behind the chest before flipping the lid open (so that it opens facing the opposite direction from him).

The adamantine blade (doesn't matter which one) cuts through the chain easily. Exiel inspects the chest, and finding nothing suspicious, cautiously positions himself behind the chest and flips it open.
The bad news is that he just barely missed noticing that the entire chest had been covered with a dangerous contact poison. The good news is that being a paladin, he has stupidly high saves and will only fail the save on a natural 1.
Exiel's fortitude save: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (9) + 16 = 25
As he flips the chest open, he feels a slight tingling in his fingers, but nothing more. There is a brief pause as you wait for some demon or aberration to jump out of the chest at you, but after awhile it becomes apparent that nothing of the sort is about to happen. Peering inside, you find:
a potion of non-detection
a potion of gaseous form
a rope of climbin
a wand of air walk (7 charges)
a hammer and a score of iron spikes
two blocks and tackle
four 50-foot ropes
a giant-sized portable ram (far too big to be effectively used in the normal way by you, but you may find a creative way to use it)
There is nothing else of interest in the room. What do you do next?

I wouldn't mind the wand, but other than that, I have no strong opinions on any of the other items.
He then goes back to the closed door, and checks for traps...

I just assumed we took everything that was listed, like any self-respecting murder-hobo would.
Exiel looks at the assembled team doubtfully.
"Well, apart from you, Constantin, we have a fist-fighter, a cavalier and two warrior-mages. I would be quite surprised if any of us were particular trained in the art of opening locked doors quietly. Besides, if this place is truly under attack, and our ultimate mission is to facilitate the retrieval of Baba Yaga, then we are on the same side as the defenders of this place. If past experiences are anything to go by, if us Pathfinders are here, the proverbial excrement is about the hit the proverbial ceiling-ventilation. We're practically harbingers of trouble." ;)
"So if the defenders are in trouble and we're here to help, I'm sure they won't mind us bringing down a few doors to come to their aid. I say smash away. Though try to aim for the hinges of the door so we can keep the repair-bill to a minimum. If the denizens of this place are at least somewhat-friendly, I should be able to placate them." (One more buff and my diplomacy will be at +31)

![]() |
![Aram Zey](http://cdn.paizo.com/image/avatar/PZO9235-Aram.jpg)
Constantin puts his shoulder to the door, but is unable to get it to budge. After a few quick blows to the hinges with an adamantine blade, however, the hinges are quickly dealt with them, and between Constantin and Exiel, the door itself is freed from its stone frame shortly after. Setting the door aside, you see that the passage continues onwards towards the North-West.
As you travel down this passage, you realise the temperature is rising gradually. Several feet from your position, you see that the passage leads to a large natural cavern. The cavern is warm and humid, and stinks of stagnant water. Wisps of water vapor hover just above the floor, somewhat concealing a swampy morass of fungus. In some areas of the cave, large lumpy piles of fungus rise from the slop like fetid islands, and long, rubbery fungal strands hang from the ceiling and walls.
You are not quite in the cavern yet, and it has been about 5 minutes since you fought the ettin. (Minute per level buffs are still in effect, except the ones cast from wands.)

![Aram Zey](http://cdn.paizo.com/image/avatar/PZO9235-Aram.jpg)
I'd say you knocked it out and then it bled out. Also, you would have lost the charges left on your chill touch when you used your wand, either because a spell from a wand interacts with a held charge the same way as a new spell cast by you would, or because you can't hold the charge on more than 1 spell at a time - and cure light wounds is a touch spell.
Now, what do you guys want to do about the stinking bog-in-a-cavern before you?
![](/WebObjects/Frameworks/Ajax.framework/WebServerResources/wait30.gif)
![]() |
![Aram Zey](http://cdn.paizo.com/image/avatar/PZO9235-Aram.jpg)
With nothing else to do, you eventually make your way down the passage...and down indeed it goes.... Piles of smooth, pale pebbles that glow with a faint violet light lie scattered along the walls of the passages. The pebbles emanate a warm violet glow, reminiscent of the light at dawn that you left behind you, and illuminate the corridors with a warm, dim light.
You are not quite in the cavern yet, and it has been about 5 minutes since you fought the ettin. (Minute per level buffs are still in effect, except the ones cast from wands.)
Also, remember this is not a building. You entered through a door in the back of the head of a ginormous statue of a maiden, went down a long flight of stairs, and at the bottom of the stairs you found the ettin's chamber. You have no real way of telling, but if you had to guess you'd probably say you're in the chest of the statue of the maiden. Somewhere to the East is the statue of the middle-aged pregnant woman, and further again to the East is the statue of the old crone.
It's about mid-morning at the moment, and as for how deep the bog is...well, go find out! Are you entering the cavern?
