Guys, I will be out of the office for the next couple of days. There is a distinct possibility that I will not have any connection to the net. Hence, do not be alarmed if I have not posted on the IC thread.

Work requires me to travel far from Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, to the Pangasinan, a province 100 plus KM away to the North, to handle a criminal case (double murder with multiple frustrated murder) filed against my client by the Mayor of the City where I am going. One of the victims was the former Mayor of that city and who was the father of the present Mayor. There is clearly a lot of emotion in this case.

Suffice it to say I must play a little cloak and dagger as I do not want to advertise that I am the lawyer for the other side. It feels as though my life is turning into an rpg adventure.

Wish me luck.

Good luck then.

Beware the Albino.

Tom -

I may have asked you this before, and apologize if I have, but how do you put together your maps? I've finally started running a pbp (Legacy of Fire) for some friends, and would like to do something similar.

Thanks

Sorry for not replying before. I imagine you're asking about the later maps which are nicer than the earlier ones. My method is probably not the most efficient. I get the PDFs of the adventure and take a screenshot of the page. Then I paste it into Microsoft Paint where I also add text like row and column numbers. Then I upload that to flickr and crop the image there in their picnic software. It's kind of kludgy. Paint in particular is awkward to use. The main reason I do it that way is I don't have to buy any software.

Good luck on the LoF PbP. That's a good looking adventure. I'm playing in French Wolf's game and it's huge fun.

Thanks too for your kind words in earlier posts. I'm trying to keep this AP fresh.

Also, thanks to everyone for sticking with the game. We just passed 2500 posts this morning. I am enjoying playing with you all very much.

Likewise. Istas is one of my favorite PCs to roleplay so far. And Curse of the Crimson Throne is one of the better APs Paizo's produced so far, in my opinion. You've run it very well.

It's funny..I would say Heather is the character I enjoy playing most in any of my pbp's and she wasn't even mine to begin with.

Guys, a heads up. I'll be out of touch (well internet) over Labor day weekend (September 4-8).

Thanks, Tom. I'm actually trying to do something similar with Gimp, but gimping ain't easy. I'm running my game on zetaboards, which allows you to post images right in the thread, and I even pull other artwork from the pdfs, which is nice. It's a group of guys that haven't played in a long, long time, so anything I can do to generate interest & excitement helps.

I have to confess, I actually (briefly) thought about dropping out of games I play in so as to make life a little easier with running one, but I just can't do it. This group is a lot of fun, and Keliwym is easily my favorite character. I actually played him in Tarren/Trevor's River of Darkness which just wrapped up, but he started here.

Congrats to you, btw, on the 2500 posts and almost two years, which is equally impressive.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Team effort. This is a great group.

Where is everyone? Wow, I'm just sooo not used to being the one looking for others to post . . .

So...I see we're to level up to 3rd following the fun at Eel's End. And we're switching to the final Pathfinder core rules instead of Beta. That presents a problem for Istas that I'd like to discuss.

Bottom line:

Spoiler:
I think I'd prefer to switch Istas' cleric domains from Knowledge and Repose...to Knowledge and Death. The Repose domain underwent a major revision and the neat power she used to knockout the gnome, Gruller, during the knivesies bout is gone. In its place, it only staggers opponents for 1 round now (although it can put a currently staggered opponent to sleep). That's far less advantageous than it used to be. Also, a fair number of the Repose domain spells aren't nearly as useful as I'd prefer. In general, it's nowhere near as attractive a domain anymore for me.

So, with your permission, I'd like to change over from the Repose domain to the Death domain. This will give Istas a slightly different melee touch attack that causes bleed damage instead. I think that's still in keeping with how I've presented her so far. The part that doesn't make sense is the domain spells granted at 3rd, 6th, and 8th level, because they grant animate dead, create undead, and create greater undead, which I just don't see in keeping with the tenets of Pharasma. Even death knell at 2nd level is potentially off-limits since it has the [evil] descriptor and Istas is a NG worshipper of a N deity. However, looking at her other granted domain (i.e., Knowledge), it's far more likely I'd have Istas prepare those divination-related spells anyway (i.e., detect thoughts, speak with dead, find the path, and discern location). So, in essence, Istas will only have one domain spell to "choose" from at those levels...and I'm okay with that as long as it makes better roleplaying sense.

Aside from that, the only other changes to the core cleric will involve no longer being able to Turn Undead without taking a feat. And she can never wear heavy armor unless she takes the appropriate feat, as well. Everything else should be the same, I think. But let me know how you feel about Istas changing domains mid-stream.

Also, FYI, there's a 2nd level spell called bone shield available to clerics of Pharasma described in Gods and Magic. I'm thinking I'd like to have Istas use that in the near future. Let me know if you'd be open to including it in her available spell list. If you need specifics on it, I can post the writeup when I get home.

Thanks,
--Neil

Neil, I'm sure we can work something out. I won't have time to think about it until the end of the week. Such rules examination taking a long time for my fuddled brain to begin to grasp. (And then often wrongly.)

If you're psyched about bone shield, please post particulars. No hurry. UNless the party turns right around and attack Barvasi we have some time IRL to sort it all out.

Heather updated...not many changes except her bloodline shock bolt no longer is at will and she lost the shortbow proficiency..but I gave her a light X-bow instead(same chance to hit more damage and it's a simple weapon).

Took PB shot for my 3rd level feat...as it applies to ranged touches it was a no brainer..likewise the choice of shocking grasp for my new 1st level spell...I gain the electrical version of Burning hands from my bloodline and also resist electricity 10

Did we get any money out of the Barvasi incident...worried that we might be falling behind the curve again.

I still have to check on rewards for Barvasi. I like a leaner campaign in terms of treasure and gear, but I'll try to make sure someone can always damage a potential foe. You won't be facing any Balors with only a +1 candlestick.

It would not be game-breaking if you wanted to keep the shortbow proficiency if you feel it suits Heather better.

The final release of the PF rules has reduced Stilgar's Wisdom. Half-orcs only get one +2 Bonus to any ability they choose.

I like the beta version for half-orc ability adjustment better anyway. I feel the strength boost is a critical part of the half-orc image. I'd actually like it still better if it was +2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Int, -2 Ch, harkening back to the old days when they got a charisma and intelligence penalty. But we can play beta adjustments as written.

Hah! That hadn't occurred to me, despite being a big fan of F&GM. I also just read Michael Chabon's "Gentlemen of the Road," which was, to me, more that just influenced by Lieber & R.E. Howard. A fun, quick read, but basically replace Ffahrd w/ a large black man and combine mouser with a Jewish Solomon Kane, and you pretty much have it. Oh, and take out the sorcery, too.

I should also point out that most of the reviews acknowledge some influence from the "swashbuckling tales of yore," and praise Chabon's story, which bugs me. Those same reviewers no doubt love Chabon because he's a well regarded Pulitzer Prize winning writer ("Cavalier & Klay"), but would probably never admit to reading those old pulp writers themselves.

Was that your doing or Jeorik's? I find it fascinating that regardless of our original intentions, characters can really take off on a life on their own and take a path we never actually intended . . . and I can really see Jeorik contemplating a calling to a devote life.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Jeorik, Keliwyn, Istas, and Heather good to go at third level.

I can't wait to see what you guys decide to do about Majenko.

I agree with Bill about Jeorik -- he's got the paladin vibe.

Bill, regarding Keliwyn's cash -- I did dump a boatload onto the PCs in the queen's name. I think Wellard had totaled it up at one point. i can't remember the total.

That was before Istas joined, so she missed the queen's bounty, but I've tried to make it up to her.

Wicht, did Jeorik manage to spend all his loot. I know that bow put a dent in it but 53 gp seems a tad low, unless I missed hidden wealth somewhere.

Radavel, per your last post, I didn't even look at Stilgar. I assume you'll let me know when he's ready. By the way are you out in the boondocks on the same case again?

Didn't I throw in some arrows or something?

One vote from Wicht to move on and save Majenko sooner than later. I'll take that as before Darthen's dinner. Any other opinions?

no not on face book..no wish to be either

Heather is all for rescuing Majenko but will admit that Barvasi serves a purpose..kill him and we might get worse in his place...she still thinks her best chance is Charm Person.DC is 15 which means my odds should be better than even unless his wisdom is really high(yes I'm metagaming here)if that fails we can block the door of his 'audience chamber'(with Stilgar probably) and deal with him at our leisure I think 6 3rd level characters should be able to handle it.

We could always go for non lethal and hold him hostage but that would probably result in his having a blood feud with us.So if we can't get Majenko peacefully best we kill him..off course given the nature of the underworld if we off him we could end up in control of Eels End..and we should remember to take our watch badges just in case we need to use them to get out of a murder charge

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

An initial charm person works for me, followed by violence if it does not work.

- So are we doing this before the dinner?

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

At this point, I assume you are doing it before the dinner.

Eel's End Map Might help for making plans.

Keliwyn is fine with letting the other's decide Majenko's fate, and assisting as needed.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Guys, please come up with a plan or Devargo will get his psuedodragon mind control device working and thousands of pseudodragons will march through the sewers of Korvosa with little explosive rockets strapped to their backs and annihilate the city.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

The way I see it, there are three characters primarily interested in taking direct action to free the pseudodragon. Jeorik, Heather, and Keliwyn. So those guys need to step up and present the plan for doing so. I assumed Keliwyn would play a major role, because of the potential impact such a rescue could have on his relationship with Devargo as an informant, etc.

I'm guessing Istas and Stilgar are willing to participate, but we're not really the driving force for this scene. So it's very much in character for Istas to sit out the planning. That doesn't mean I can't metagame with everyone, though, from a player's perspective to offer ideas.

I tried to do as much of that as possible in my earlier suggestions. Do we break in? What time of day? Do we use distractions? What kind? Who's going to be tasked with directly freeing Majenko from his cage? What do we do if Devargo shows up? These questions need answers.

My two-cents so far,

Sorry for my lack of posting the last few days. I'll try to pick up again. We do seem to have hit a bit of a slow down. I wonder if everyone is waiting for everyone else to take the lead. I know I try not to be a post-hog, meaning, sometimes I'll want to post but make myself wait. OK, Radavel.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

In reviwing Istas' prepared spell list for this upcoming save-the-dragon foray, I hit upon a new idea that might really help us. Since she's gained access to 2nd level spells, she can now cast enthrall. And that might work even better for us than Heather's charm person.

I'm thinking if Istas can approach the guards outside Devargo's hold and cast enthrall while talking about how the goddess of fate can influence the luck of those gambling at Eel's End, she might be able to keep them all out of your way while you guys slip off to free Majenko. If Heather wants to charm a guard to take with you...or save it in case Devargo shows up...I think that could still prove useful. But, for occupying the guards, I think enthrall fits the bill best.

In reading the spell's description, everyone will get a Will save to resist the enthrall effect. And, for those affected, as long as they don't have 4 HD or more or a 16 Wisdom or higher, they'll remain completely unaware of their surroundings while listening to Istas. That means the rest of you should be able to slip downstairs undetected. What's more...is that if any other guards wander over to see what's going on, they'll have to make a Will save to avoid becoming enthralled, too. And, lastly, even after Istas stops talking (which can be for up to 1 hour), those affected by the spell will still waste 1d3 rounds talking about her speech while we get out of there.

What's not to love?

--Neil

P.S. If Istas prepares enthrall, I'd have her swap out augury for it.

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

If Istas wants to enthrall the guards, I see no problem with that.
