Jon, The Evil DM |
Hey guys, I was trying to update this today but unfortunately it ended up the last on the list this time around, and I'm fighting off an illness after a rough day at work. The next post will be a big one, so I don't want to write it up until I'm in the right state of mind to make it all make sense.
I'm headed out of state tomorrow, but expect an update some time tomorrow night.
Borax Bohan |
Rough.
Back in my younger days, I was playing basketball and did something to my psyiotic nerve. Had to walk hunched over like an old man for months. Took almost a year of PT to get me back to normal.
Do we apply the advance immediately or do we have to wait?
Jon, The Evil DM |
Long story short, I may be in worse shape than we thought, so I haven't been too active. There is a SMALL chance that my scans missed a slightly punctured lung, because I can feel fluid in them. I'll be at the doctor Tuesday, I'll keep you updated.
Borax (and others who don't know) advances are applied immediately. Everyone, please let me know what you spend your Advanced on here or in your character sheets so I don't have to try and figure it out.
Jacob Farrell |
Best of lucks in your scans, a puctured lung is no joke at all.
And Jacob will advance Notice to d8 and use the other "advance a skill" part of the advance to pick Throwing.
Luckily I can "casually pick" some grenades or simple explosive material to build my own.
Jon, The Evil DM |
Yeah, I'm a bit worried about it, but nothing I can do until I get to the doctor. As for Throwing, I think I said this before but it was rolled into Fighting, since that made sense to me. Feel free to pick another skill to learn, or to upgrade. Also, in terms of grenades, you can all feel free to grab... we'll say three grenades of any type you'd like (within reason).
Jacob Farrell |
I doubt tactical nuke falls inside the "reason" range, so I'll have to pick 3 fragmentation grenades... unless -and here comes the questions- I can pick and/or build, any of the followings:
•Detpacks or any other kind of plastic explosive remote controlled artifacts
•Claymore style mines
•Semtex
Also, relating my repair roll with assistance... how big is said bonus? I ask so I know how many times will I need to reroll or not.
Jon, The Evil DM |
Jacob, all of those are fine. Claymores have rules in the core Savage Worlds book already, and I'm fine with the rules presented for them. They're on Page 55, just so you know. As for any sort of set detonation charges like C4, I'll rule them as being equivalent to an Anti-Personnel mine from the same page, but they count as Heavy Weapons, and instead of being activated by some sort of pressure switch, you spend a free action to detonate them whenever you want.
Also, I totally forgot your bonus to the roll, but it was supposed to be a +2, so you were correct in assuming it. Sorry about that. Once I hear from Borax about his Advance and if he wants to do anything, I will move us into the next stretch of the mission.
Jacob Farrell |
Then I will pick three C4 charges, and if allowed Jacob will try to Streetwise his way into finding if there's any soldier that deals with stuff to make some bussiness. Maybe buy him more explosives(specially if I can get demolition charges just in case), or swap some broken (he doesn't have to realise that hehe) alien tech for a bit more of boom.
Oh, and Jacob will upgrade Fighting instead of Throwing as per your ruling, the better to theow boom thingies well.
Jon, The Evil DM |
You could roll Streetwise in an attempt to requisition more explosives, sure. You all get three of them for free, but feel free to roll Streetwise or accompany Jacob to see if you can't find someone who's willing to sell them. In this case, I suppose money is being a bit abstracted, since it's more trading some various things you might have on your person, etc. It's not regulation, but it'll work.
Borax Bohan |
So can you still take Edges with a prereq of Novice when Seasoned?
Borax Bohan |
Alright. Then I'll go with Smarts to d8
Jon, The Evil DM |
Borax, you can increase your Smarts at the moment, but remember you may only increase one of your Attributes every rank (you go up in Rank every 20 XP). Next advance you'll be Seasoned, meaning you could increase another Attribute, but you then couldn't increase another one for your next 20 XP. Not a problem with what you're doing now, I just want to let you know.
Borax Bohan |
Yes. I read that in the manual. But it looks like I need Smarts d8 to get some of the other Leadership Edges. I also am thinking about raising my Notice and Tracking, which is another reason to go d8 on SMA.
EDIT:
Did Borax get his wounds healed to zero or do they remain?
Jon, The Evil DM |
Jon, The Evil DM |
Gavril is correct; incendiary grenades and other fire-based weaponry are illegal via international arms law, and using them constitutes war crimes. While XCOM has no problems using such weapons against aliens once you join them, there is no reason for the UN to be carrying anything of the sort for the moment. Once you're all inbound for the main story (as I'm sure you've all guessed, this is more of a prologue) it'll be a lot different in that regard. Borax, feel free to pick some other explosives though, obviously.
Also, for those following along at home, the doctor says I don't have anything wrong with my lungs, which is fortuitous. He says he thinks the problem might be that the whiplash I experienced is exerting pressure on my nerves, which is both causing the pain I'm feeling in certain places and also might cause some slightly irregular breathing, which is what I was concerned about.
Borax Bohan |
Borax picks up another concussion grenade.
Hopefully the nerve damage is something that can be fixed over time.

Hey guys, I'm posting this in all my active games so everyone is aware of it; I'll be traveling abroad to Iceland for about three weeks through my university starting on Thursday. I should have reasonable access to internet while I'm there since we're primarily staying in its two larger cities, but I don't know how often I'll have the time to post since I'm on a trip through school and not traveling by myself. I imagine I'll be able to post on a semi-regular basis, but I want everyone to know I probably won't be posting once a day for the next three weeks or so. Some days I'll probably post fairly regularly, and others I might not be here for a few days. I'll try to keep you guys updated on when I'll be around and when I won't, but the truth is I don't exactly know.
This game, and my other games, are not going on hiatus for three weeks, but I will be posting less frequently. I'll do my best to keep us moving, but definitely expect some slow down. I'll be back in a few weeks, so once I'm here we'll get moving at full speed again.
Borax Bohan |
Good to see your injury hasn't stopped your travel plans.
Jon, The Evil DM |
Yeah. It's actually a requirement for me to graduate and I'll be a senior next year, so I'd pretty much have to stay longer and dig myself into a bigger hole of student loan debt if it had stopped me from flying. That was, other than the obvious reason, one of the reasons I was worried about my lung; they often won't let you fly with anything like that, even if you've been to surgery and are recovering.
Gavril Vasilescu |
Hey all, posting in all my games to say that as of this evening I'm going camping with family and then paintballing for several days, so I won't be able to post. I'll be back the evening of Sunday the 10th, and hopefully I'll be back to regular posting and catching up then or Monday morning. Please bot me as needed while I'm away!
Jon, The Evil DM |
I'll be posting tomorrow at some point, either in the morning or the evening most likely. I ran out of time to update everything tonight and it's around 3 Am, so I ought to head to bed. Thankfully I don't have to be up very early, since I accidentally did today what everyone else is supposed to do tomorrow morning. I should have stable WiFi for the next several days, so we should see fairly regular updates from me.
Jon, The Evil DM |
Hey everyone, I'm back from my trip to Iceland. I was, more often than not, much busier than I expected I would be, and because of that my posting habits suffered. However, I am back and (mostly) settled in, so expect a post from me in Gameplay very shortly! I'm trying to get all of my games updated right now that I'm running, so it may be a little while, but we'll be moving again today.
Borax Bohan |
Not a problem.
How is the social scene in Iceland?
Jacob Farrell |
How is the social scene in Iceland?
Well, there are like 6 people livin' there... so take a wild guess.
Jon, The Evil DM |
The social scene varies... a lot. If you're in Reykjavik or Akureyri (the two major cities which probably comprise about ~85% of the population between the two of them) there is certainly a very active night life and a lot of stuff for you to do. In smaller towns, such as Hofsós, you've only got about 200 people so there isn't much going on. Still, I did notice that Icelanders are immensely friendly people; this may have something to do with its obscenely low crime rate. They are almost always willing to help you with anything they're able to, even if they might have to go a bit out of their way to do it.
Also, I watched the Iceland-France game of the Euro Cup in a town of about 6,000 people, and about two-thirds of them were gathered in a park in the center of town to watch the game together. The coach for the Icelandic football team used to be the island's dentist, so it was a very personal and exciting thing for them that I got to share in... even though they lost (still did better than Germany though, at least they scored).
Borax Bohan |
So did any of those local women give you the cold shoulder?
You knew that was coming to moment I asked about the social scene!
Jon, The Evil DM |
Hah! They certainly might have, but I wasn't paying them much attention. My girlfriend and I have been together for three years, and one of the best things about the trip was that she came along too so we got to experience it together. Although, I will say one thing (which she agreed with); there are a lot of very attractive women in Iceland. Most people there certainly had the Nordic genes, is all I'll say.
Jacob Farrell |
Well, that's something we europeans been saying for years already: the Vikings did pillage and bring back women to their towns... and it seem they brought only the most gorgeous ones.
Friend of mine was doing his Erasmus year in Finnland, which is only slightly more populated than Iceland, and he agrees: Northern Europe is the best Europe.
Jacob Farrell |
I'm on a short trip and been caught with huge ass no data zones so can't get a post properly. Will try to post something later today, but just in case I'll roll things so you can progress even if I can't get the dramatic exposition off.
Using a banked raise.
Shooting: 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -11d6 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
... Benny
Shooting: 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -11d6 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
What? Benny again.
Shooting: 1d8 - 2 ⇒ (6) - 2 = 41d6 - 2 ⇒ (4) - 2 = 2

Jacob Farrell |
Damn, I didn't realise... and it's a double 1 failure.
F!&&. F~&! f+@# f@&@. And the no data thing still gows on -this post got me 35 minutes-
The Doomkitten |
Every game of XCOM I play, I can always trace it crashing and burning to the first time a sectopod showed up. I put out a full field of Colonels and Majors into a Swarming mission (yes, I play Long War), and the gorram robot shows up out of nowhere and kills EVER. SINGLE. LAST. ONE. Even with super-low to-hit chances, it hits. Sixty effective hit points is just no bloody fair, come on.
Jon, The Evil DM |
One of them ruined my perfect squad in my original copy of the game for Xbox 360, actually. They killed my flying Sniper and it all went down from there. My Assaults got flanked and killed, and I tried to extract my other units and then they all died.
Rest assured, you're not fighting it right now. That would be cruel and unusual.
The Doomkitten |
I'm admittedly an XCOM newb (only got it a few weeks after this game started, and haven't beaten it yet), and I always stump against the tech tree. And I hate looking things up, because I feel like I'm cheating. Any hints on research or autopsies I should do first? Like I said, I'm playing Long War, against all reason. Loving how grenades, medkits, trophies, and laser sights are unlimited, and how it automatically randomizes stats. Although when all I have are soldiers with amazing mobility and will, but with 3 HP and terrible aim, I get a little peeved...
