Caleb charges into the darkness and Caliban goes full attack at his unseen assailant...
Caliban Ray of Frost: 1d100 ⇒ 1
Caliban Attack: 1d100 ⇒ 34
Caleb Charge: 1d100 ⇒ 11
...but the nimble Tiefling is not there to be hit. He snickers in the darkness beside them.
Sioned begins to detect evil herself, while Kloss and the glaive -welding woman are still locked in mortal combat.
Enemies
The two evil continue as before, the woman backing even farther away into the other room and out of the darkness on the other side. They attack the same targets again...
Woman Glaive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
dmg: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 [Kloss -20]
Tiefling: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12[Caliban AC 12]
dmg: 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (3) = 4[Caliban -16]
... cutting and stabbing Kloss and Caliban again. Anger flashes again over the woman's face.
In the darkness you hear Kloss grunt in pain again as metal hits against metal. Caliban is hit again as well, more or less in the same place as before, and he grits his teeth to work through the pain.
The woman growls in a low voice:

Can I fight defensively? I'll include that in my actions, if not just add +4 to the hits.
Caliban, desperation growing at the chuckling assailant again tries to overwhlem his opponent. Attacking with both a Ray of Frost and his now empowered longsword.
Concentration check - Ray of Frost (DC16): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Fighting defensive (-4) Ranged Touch: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
Longsword (+1) fighting defensively (-4): 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5
Sioned Houj |
"Caliban, they're after you specifically! Everyone, this darkness is going to end soon!"
Sioned continues to detect evil.
Arshea, don't let us lose. We're so close to winning, and I want to know who saved me.
Kloss |
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 101d12 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Heroes
Caliban flails ineffectively into the darkness, his spell disrupted by the pain in his leg and his longsword striking no targets in front of him.
Caleb on the other side swings wide at the Tiefling's voice....
Caliban Attack: 1d100 ⇒ 26
... but misjudges the distance to his target and swipes through an empty space.
Kloss is having similar luck on the other side of the darkness with his foe as she blocks again with the metal hilt of her weapon.
Suryani and Sioned wait at the door for the darkness to pass as the inquisitor feels the presence of 1 evil aura somewhere in the vicinity.
Enemies
Although Kloss and the woman are just 5ft into the next room, no one else can see them though the inky blackness. She looks annoyed at the Tiefling and begins casting a spell...
defensive spell: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
... her eyes cloud and turn white for a moment, then return to normal.
The Teifling continues feverishly trying to kill his Elven target, without getting hit himself...
Tiefling: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
crit miss?: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
... but his hesitance to get hit makes his attack fruitless.
The human woman speaks again in her strange language, it sounds like it is coming from the next room.
And as suddenly as it spread throughout the room, the magical darkness dissipates!
A battle scene is revealed, with Caleb and Caliban fighting a Tiefling near the southern door - the Elf's leg covered in blood. Just through the door, Kloss and the woman are locked in melee.
---
Sioned and Suryani are less than 20ft from the Teifling, but 30ft from Kloss and the woman. Caleb and Caliban are just 15ft away from Kloss and the woman.

Seriously Suryani, create a flank or aid Caleb in defense. Anything. Don't just stand around.
Sioned Houj |
Thank you, Arshea.
With a growl, Sioned charges at the woman and swings at her.
flail attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 = 20 Omit the +2 if I can't actually charge.
flail damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Kloss |
I'm sorry if that came across a lot less friendly than I intended it - my apologies. My point is: even though you might have a hard time hitting an enemy, you can still do an 'aid another' action (against AC 10) to help someone attack or defend.
Caliban Tre'Athkar |
Caliban, seeing clearly the teifling now, takes a slight step, trying to either gain position on the teifling or create the opportunity for Caleb Caliban renews his assault. Grinning as he channels frost and swings his longsword.

Suryani Chaitanya |
The problem was that I had no way of locating the enemies with that darkness, so I don't see how you can flank an enemy you can't locate, or aid someone fighting that enemy.
"You are outnumbered, surrender and we will spare you," Suryani calls out to the woman, who suddenly starts to glow with a soft blue light.
Faerie fire on the woman before she pulls any other nasty tricks, then move action towards her.

Caleb and Caliban move into flanking position around the now revealed Tiefling. His smile quickly disappears as they land blow after blow, frost and steel rocking him from both sides...
[Tiefling -2 -5 -6 -7 = -20 HP]
.. and crumples to the ground, dropping his dagger. Everyone has the feeling he may not be getting up any time soon.
Sioned charges the woman with the glave, who seems to be focusing on Kloss at the moment intently, and connects a glancing blow with her flail. [Woman -13HP]
Kloss misses with his attack as the woman starts to glow from Suryani's spell.
Enemies
Her body guards dead, the woman screeches "You will pay in kind for this! Baphoment, smite this ant!"
She backs away one last time and swings wildly at Kloss...
woman's glaive: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (8) + 23 = 31
dmg: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 [Kloss -23HP]
.. Kloss moves to dodge her blow, but it is as if she knew exactly which way he would go. Her glaive lands hard in his midsection and he skids to the ground unconscious and bleeding.
The woman looks at the rest of the party, large beads of sweat rolling down her forehead, and laughs. "You'll have to tear the last breath from my throat, flower-child."

Caliban Tre'Athkar |
Caliban focuses his eyes upon the woman, electricity sparking from his fingers as he incants a spell, and closes on her, longsword in hand. IF he can do that and reach her he'll strike at her head with the sword, while stretching his sparking hand out for her chainmail armor.
If I can do those actions as outlines above, I know I'll eat an attack of opportunity closing with her.

Can I charge, power attack and smite? I can't read anything that says no but would like clairifcation.
Yes, you can still take 1 Swift action when doing a Full-round action. Charge is a Full-round Action, and Smite is a Swift action. Power Attack isn't an action at all, just a choice you make before your first attack of the round.
Caleb D'natin |
We have had quite enough of your foul god and you, young man, have at thee!
1d20 + 5 + 2 + 2 - 1 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 + 2 - 1 + 3 = 25 charge,flank power attack and smite.

Sioned Houj |
Sioned moves to flank and gives the woman another smack with the flail.

Caliban: Move up, spellstrike (you don't need to make the touch attack, the longsword attack delivers the touch spell. Spell combat can be two separate attacks, but that's a full round action. )
Caleb: 15 Charge Power attack (no flanking, you are charging straight up to her)
Suryani: 6 CLW (Kloss now at 1 HP)
Human Woman: 17

Heroes
Caliban rushes up to the woman and...
Woman aoo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
... ducks under her glaive, casting a spell onto his longsword and hitting the evil woman. Lightning sparks off of his sword and flows over her armor [Woman -24HP].
Caleb runs headlong into the combat, pulling his bastard sword up in front of his charge. As she tries to fend off Caliban, he brushes past her pole-arm and stabs the better part of his blade straight through her heart. [Woman -39HP]
She stumbles while coughing, eyes roll to the back of her head, and then she falls to the ground. Dead.
Suryani works her magic on Kloss and brings him back from unconsciousness. [Kloss 2 HP] He looks like he's seen better days.

Epic fight everyone! 650 XP Each for defeating the guards and their master!
DM Le Roy Batty |
This puts everyone at 3500 XP.
In this cavern, where the cultist woman was finally defeated, old blood stains the floor. Barrels filled with scraps of fur and fat sit against one wall, emitting an foul stench. The two long stone slab tables are covered with skinning tools and piles of freshly butchered meat at the far end to the south. Two wooden racks hold drying animal skins.
Back in the last room, also a long cavern, braziers still fill the chamber with warm orange light. An enormous bloodstain, maybe a week old darkens the long stone table's surface.
Kloss |
I think we're slowly getting back to the civilised world. Kloss moans as he regain consciousness.
Sioned Houj |
Sioned takes some deep breaths before addressing the group.
"We got really lucky there. That was just one tiefling -- no offense meant, Kloss -- and a lot more of that tactic, tieflings with darkness are quite common. Imagine if there were two or three, ready to blot out all light one after another. We should really be willing to briefly withdraw if necessary, as well as scout first before charging in."
"Speaking of scouting, I'm going to check the two adjecent rooms, starting with the one that woman came out of. I don't think there's anyone there but I'm going to be careful regardless. Assuming there's no more surprises, we carefully loot everyplace we've been to and head back to town for the day...or evening."
At that, Sioned creeps into the north room to give it a look-over.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
By "loot carefully" I mean taking 20 on Perception checks, which I plan on doing after the quick look-overs.
Caliban Tre'Athkar |
"Agreed Sioned, I did not realize it was the teifling, and not her spell which attacked me initially. My desire to return to the outdoors clouded my judgement there."
Caliban thoughtfully considers his words, then turns to the woman, casting Detect Magic and rifling through her possessions and those of the teifling.
Suryani Chaitanya |
"I agree, heading straight into that patch of darkness might not have been the smartest idea. But, we prevailed, with a little help of the Everlight," Suryani says. She then picks up the woman's wand, and checks if she's still alive. If so, she asks someone to tie her up before trying to stabilize her.
Kloss |
Vile spawn of the demons. Tieflings. They should hunted down to the last of 'em.
Kloss forgets his own afflictions as he mutters about his kin.
According to his background, Kloss was transformed into a tiefling, and not born as one, so he doesn't quite consider himself akin to regular tieflings.
DM Le Roy Batty |
At that, Sioned creeps into the north room to give it a look-over.
Sioned opens the door to the north and uncovers a small room. A stone pedestal holds a copper brazier aloft in the center of this room. Against the western wall, an enormous pile of animal furs and thick quilts serves as a bed. Sheathed weapons and stone carvings adorn the walls. The eastern half of the room holds a wooden desk, beneath which stands a long, thin iron lockbox.
DM Le Roy Batty |
Caliban thoughtfully considers his words, then turns to the woman, casting Detect Magic and rifling through her possessions and those of the teifling.
Searching through the woman's belongings, Caliban find a few things radiating magic: 2 potions, and a wand (which Suryani picks up).
Other gear in sleeves and pouches on her and the Tiefling include: 1 alchemist's fire, a vial of antitoxin, a bejeweled book of prayers, a lockbox key, a note, and 32 gp.
Her masterwork glaive lies on the ground, as does the Tielfing's daggers. She wears a chain shirt, while the Tiefling wears leather.
