Sioned sneaks a quick glance at the next room, off of the original room that they entered from the surface. Inside she sees some stout stone chairs surrounding a block of larger stone that serves as a table. The table’s top strewn with bone dice and cracked clay jugs. Stained canvas pillows rest on the chairs. A copper bowl filled with coals hangs from the ceiling, filling the room with warmth and an orange glow. There is a hole in the southeast corner, and a rope ladder can be seen starting a decent into the hole.

It seems that some mongrelmen have been here recently, as she can tell from the light and the game on the table, but no one is in the room at this moment.

Dubiously looking at the hole, "I suppose it is our best way to go, then we shall return and check the other ways?" Caliban shrugs, settling his weapons to climb down the rope ladder.

The guards have the element of surprise but Kloss is too quick for them. From 6ft up the rope above Caliban, he has precious few seconds to react before they fire.

The air in this cavern smells of damp and mold. Water glistens on the walls, and collects in a stagnant pool in front of two staggered barricades blocking the way to the only door out of this room. The pool of water is about 10ft away and 5ft across, and the barricades sit 5ft beyond that. The guards hide themselves where the walls and the barricades meet, but if Kloss were to jump off the ladder, he could possibly make it to one of them. The door is farther than he can make it in this round.

Kloss jumps of the ladder, runs through the pool of water and around the battlement to threaten the closest mongrelman. The look on the creatures face is a mix of surprise and fear.

The guard near Kloss scurries back and levels a bolt at his assailant...

which hits into the teifling's shoulder, penetrating his armor shallowly and causing him some pain.

The other guard grabs the moment the shoot at the Elf dangling on the rope...

MM2 attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
MM2 failure confirm: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

... but his crossbow jams! He bats at it wildly trying to clear the lodged projectile.

Those at the top of the hole can jump down and make an acrobatics check to not take any damage (move action) or climb down the rope to about 6ft and then dismount (2 move actions).

Suryani clambers down the rope clumsily, and makes room for the others, squinting at the mongrelmen.

Kloss presses on to the crossbow man, ideally trying to manoeuvre them into a corner so they can't back away, and swings with his axe.

Suryani and Caleb scurry down the rope and make it safely to the bottom, while Caliban hops off and runs to the 2nd guard. On his way through the puddle on the ground he unexpectedly steps on a caltrop that was hidden underneath the murky water, (Caliban HP -1, movement 1/2) and is subsequently unable to bridge the entire distance to his enemy!

Guard1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Kloss backs his quarry into the corner, but is unable to penetrate the creature's armor. The cornered monster retaliates by retrieving a club from his belt and is caught off-guard by the ditching of his crossbow. Kloss deftly ducks the blow and the club hits the wall beside him.

Guard2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 oops, forgot their BAB before

The other guard continues to focus on the hobbled Caliban but the bolt misses the mark by a wide margin.

Female Mongralman: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

After rounding the corner of the battlement Caliban is quite surprised to find a female Mongrelman hiding in the shadows of the other side! She snaps an arrow directly at Caliban faster than he can react, but it glances harmlessly off of his armor.

Sioned climbs down the rope safely and takes out her bow, but there isn't time for much else. Suryani and Caleb move in for the attack.

They splash through the puddle on the ground and Suryani feels a great stinging pain in her foot as she steps on a caltrop! (Suryani HP -1, movement 1/2)

The crossbow wielding mongrel in the corner being too far away to reach this moment, they both opt to attack the female mongrelman with the bow. Caliban hits with his sword, slicing into her chain shirt (Female MM -11HP) but Suryani misses with hers.

Caliban joins them soon after and she dodges and ducks out of the way of his blow as well.

Meanwhile in the corner, Kloss is angrily bearing down on his opponent. He swings his mighty greataxe and the guard grabs his shoulder in pain. (MM Guard 1 -8HP)

Guard 1 is too distracted by the pain in his side to land anything of consequence. The club glances off of Kloss's armor.

Guard 2 continues to take unsuccessful pot shots at the party.

Sioned fires her bow across the top of the battlements, but it's hard to get a shot off with the melee raging on in the center. The arrow flies quite wide.

Kloss swings again at his prey, who is now just defending for dear life. The great axe slices through the mongrelman's club and into his throat. He falls to ground with hands around his neck and passes out. (MM Guard 1 -16 HP, prone, unconscious)

The female mongrelmen keeps her 3 attacks at bay with nimble dodges and jukes. Only Suryani is even able to touch her with a weapon, but even then it only deflects off of her armor.

guard 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Guard 2 reloads and shoots at the now solitary Kloss as a bit of retaliation for taking down his friend, but is unable to get him in the crosshairs.

The female guard drops her bow and draws out a longsword. She continues to focus on the paladin all the while slinging what must be insults in an unknown language. This time her sword...

...penetrates the paladin's armor, leaving a bloody puncture wound on his side.

Feeling the bolt whizz past him, Kloss turn his attention to the other guardsman, stares him in the eye with a wicked smile and says See this? You're next!

He then rushes up to him and slams his axe, trying to corner him like he did with the previous guard.

Caliban, seeing Caleb's injury will attempt to take a five foot step to gain advantage on the female mongrelman, creating angles of attack for Caleb and Suryani. Immediately after stepping, he will slash his longsword down and hopefully at the back of the guard's leg.

Sioned runs through the water unharmed, but is unable to land a hit on the shifty mongrel crossbowman, while Kloss rushes charging with his ax. The mongrelman tries to duck the blow, but the ax hits him square in the chest. He instantly falls unconscious from the pain and flops on the ground. [-16 HP]

Suyani, Caliban and Caleb move to flank and attack the lone female mongrelman, but she is too fast for any of their swings. Caleb slashes his sword wide and it sinks hard into the wood of the barricade. She takes this moment of weakness...

... and chops down on the paladins armor, but he is too heavily protected.

The lone door in the back, near Sioned and Kloss opens to reveal 2 more guards, who rush into the room!

Kloss and Sioned spring into action on the new guards coming through the door. Flanking on either side of the first, their blows land in rapid succession and the guard crumbles to the ground. [Guard 3 HP -17, unconscious]

The Female mongrelman's finally tires and is unable to dodge the blows of her 3 attackers no more. Suryani lands the first strike, followed in quick succession by Caleb, who draws a new weapon from his belt. [Female -9 HP]

Caliban starts to casts his frost spell, but it fizzles as he loses concentration. He attacks with his longsword as well and connects just as she tries to dodge away from another attack. She screams and falls to the ground after the sword rakes her back. [Female -24 HP, unconscious]

The last guard sees himself completely outnumbered and withdrawals through the door and around the corner. Through the door, Kloss and Sioned can see a large rough block of stone with wooden chairs around it that must serve as a meeting table. The room is lit with soft orange light, unlike the rest of this area.

Seeing the guard withdraw into the next room, Caliban says, "Caleb, grab the door, Kloss, can you bring him down with your bow? Sioned, you and I will rush in after Kloss has softened him up! Suryani, can you follow Caleb in?" The elf then positions himself on one side of the door, switching from his longsword to the chief's morningstar.
