Bats..cockroaches......amongst others.


The tunnel opens into a circular cavern, roughly forty feet in diameter. Thick sheets of fungus grow in the cave, and several tunnels branch off. All these save one in the north wall lead downward; the northern one leads upward. What appears to be two dead bodies lie on the ground in the middle of the cave, next to a strange heap of ropy green fungus.

Mia stands next to Tallina, looking carefully at the fungus.

The ropy green fungus is the body of the basidirond.

The two human bodies are appear to be former crusaders of Iomedea, though they are carrying glaives and spiked gauntlets instead of swords. One of the crusaders appears to to clutching something tightly in one fist.

Crusaders of Iomedea carrying a symbol of Baphomet? I've been warning the authorities for some time that cultists were infiltrating the military, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. Do the cultists carry anything else of relevance? Have any other cultists been seen in the area?


Horgus scowls at Mia's find. Cultists impersonating crusaders? As much as I hate to admit it elf, you were right, just this once. Don't let it go to your head.


Avevia gasps at Laris' revelation, My god, Irabeth is still up there, with no clue that some of her fellow crusaders are traitors. She could be surrounded by cultists and never realize it.

Seeming almost happy for the first time, Araashnial answers Mia, There have been rumors for some time that cultists of Baphomet, Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth, have been infiltrating various mercenary groups. To have infiltrated the crusaders is beyond what I had heard.

We should take the bodies with us, so that the church may identify them.


Both crusaders wear masterwork chain shirts. One carries a potion vial, the other a scroll. Between the two, they carry 129 gp.

Listening to the conversation, Lann joins in, We have seen people like this before, do you know who they are?

Laris checks over the bodies, cultists sometimes like to tattoo or mutilate themselves to prove their devotion. May be useful in identifying them later.
She'll also make a mental note of any distinguishing features, see if she can identify who they are upon reaching the surface.

Also Laris will probably take one of the chain shirts, if no-one else wants it, it's no benefit to AC, but means I can move faster, without removing it.

The cultists were both killed by poison, apparently while fighting the basidirond or shortly after killing it.

Actually if I can get my hands on the potions a simple perception check DC 15 + Potions CL can tell me the effects of the potion. So I guess I can try that. Could I take 10 on it if we have time? If not could the group try it like dip a pinkie finger into the potion and taste it to aid other and figure it out as a group? Building up trust etc between ourselves.

Seeing everyone in a hustle and bustle about possible magical potions Tallina goes for one.

"Here, I may not have the same knowledge of magic that you all seem to have, but I do know my taste buds pretty well. Let me try that potion."

Before taking the stopper out of the bottle she turns to Lann. Her voice is casual as if talking to anyone, after all her best friend is a tree.

"Personally I do not know them but they are apparently members of the crusaders on the surface. However from what I can gather they are traitors to a noble cause. I was hoping to fight alongside them as the Worldwound is a taint upon the land and should be healed."

Luci walked over and took one of the symbols of Baphomet and looked it over. She tried to remember if she'd seen it in the ritual she'd been kidnapped for but, as always, the iconography the cultist had used eluded her, all she could see was the figures around her, the feeling of the energy flowing into her, then breaking her bonds. After that it was a hectic blur save for one cultist who ended up no longer needing glasses courtesy of a rather painful use of her innate magic.

"I don't like bringing these things with us, but we need to let the rest of the crusade know. My word should be proof enough to those in a position to use the information."


Aravashnial shakes his head, I have been trying to warn the crusaders for several years now, to no avail. They dismissed me as a conspiracy theorist and ignored my warnings. We need these bodies as absolute proof.


Anevia laughs at Aravashnial's words, You are a conspiracy theorist Aravashnial. You just happened to get one right. I'm sure we can convince Irabeth, and she can present our information to the crusaders.

Suddenly growing somber she adds, If she or the crusaders have managed to survive.

After watching the party search the deceased crusaders, Lann gestures, We should continue onward. Neatholm is not much further. There will be time to rest once we are on safe ground.

"Lead on, friend."


After about 15 more minutes traveling through a side tunnel, Lann leads you into a circular, 20' diameter cavern. Four mongrelmen stand guard here before a stone door. After a brief, whispered conversation with Lann, along with several furtive looks, the guards open the door and gesture for everyone to enter.

A small dark lake ripples in the center of this two-hundred-foot-wide cavern, the walls and ceiling aglow with thick sheets of luminescent fungi. In the center of the lake, over two dozen low stone buildings cluster on a rocky one-hundred-foot-wide island. Lights glow in the windows of the buildings, giving the settlement an almost welcoming look. Rafts made of mismatched planks of timber bob along the length of a crooked pier at the lakes closest shore.

After several minutes, guards arrive and escort you across the lake to the largest building atop the island's low peak. You are introduces to Chief Sull, a bloated and unpleasant looking man with one clouded eye, who listens quietly while Lann explains the circumstances of your meeting and the assistance rendered in freeing his trapped companion.

After Lann finishes his report, Chief Sull addresses the group: Explain yourselves. Why have Overworlders come to the Mongrelman caverns. What do you know of the earthquakes that have caused such damage and collapsed so many of our caves?

This cave is impressive. I wonder if I could get some of that fungus in a bottle. I'm sure if I fed it I could have a stable light source.

Noting the Chief and that she has no skills in speaking proper, Tallina leans over to Lucianna and whispers the following.

"You seem to be the only one here with a silver tongue, maybe you should try explaining things to their Chief. "
