Benedict the Clever |
"Okay Kisegar, you and me."
Benedict moves forward to retrieve the weapon.
He will knock it against the ground to get rid of any remaining spores before bringing it back to the party.
DM Stalwart |
Kisegar gives a command to her beetle companion, who stays put with the rest of the part and well out of range of the mushrooms.
Once the two move into the patch of glowing fungus, Benedict recognizes the shape and slight whiffs of a sour but unpleasantly familiar musk, leading him to realize that the body is that of a troglodyte. Retrieving the spear predictably causes a cloud of spores to fill the air, obscuring his sight and filling his lungs with a toxin that he is thankfully immune.
Kisegar coughs a few times but doesn't appear to be in distress. "Well, easy enough," she says, fanning the spores away from her face. "A little bit of treasure gathering while we're--"
She's cut off by a large hissing as two long and sinewy shapes drop down from the wall and land hard on the ground near the two!
2d20 ⇒ (20, 15) = 35
The shapes resolve into dragon-like creatures, wingless, but covered in spines across their body! They hiss in their dragon tongues to each other triumphantly.
"They fall into our trap!"
"The mushrooms make for easy kills!"

Aerel Truthseeker |
"Stay at range! She wasn't lying about the spores!"
Aerel swings around, catching the sight of something dropping down the wall in the corner of his eye, and lets fly with a salvo of arrows at the nearer of the two figures.

Benedict the Clever |
Pretty sure Aerel has hit for way more than 30 points. More like 130.
30 last round alone I meant.
Aerel Truthseeker |
That was as much for me as anyone. The spores have spoiled some very nice rolls, but I'm tickled at the damage that Aerel has managed to deal, nonetheless.
Grum Bakison |
"Ha! Well done." Grum said, as he looked down at the corpses. "Let's finish looting the place and the bodies before we move on."
DM Stalwart |
The fissure in the cliff face seems like it served as the dragons' lair.
Kisegar calls her beetle to her and she checks it out for injuries, then rejoins the group. "Looks like that pair started using our own trap. Given the size of the patch of mushrooms, they've been using this for a while. I can cast spider climb if you want to send someone up."
Benedict the Clever |
Grum needs a DC 20 Fort save against poison, I believe.
"If these dragons have poisoned spines, and were spending time among the poisonous mushrooms, then I think I am the best one to search their lair. To be on the safe side. Could be more poisoned spines in there.
Kisegar, you can cast your spell on me."
DM Stalwart |
Kisegar complies, which allows Benedict to climb up the rock wall to the crack. He quickly realizes that he was right to be the one to investigate, because the dragons' frequent comings and goings left a dangerous array of stray quills lodged into the stone crevasse. Passing through without getting scratched is almost impossible for someone not specifically trained to maneuver in tight spaces Escape Artist DC 24 to pass unharmed

The group continues a while until they once again stop to make camp for the night. After an uneventful rest, the heroes continue on their way.
They encounter a lone oversized creature looking like some sort of prehistoric troglodyte. It's a savage opponent, though it is quickly overwhelmed by the might of the Heroes of Phaendar. Its stench was truly disgusting, but Benedict's immunity allows him to hold the line and keep it at bay allowing the archers to bring it down.
Kisegar mutters something about the "drow not keeping close watch on their pets," and tells anyone interested that the creature was called a ghonhatine -- a troglodyte subjected to horrific fleshwarping experiments.
The next night is also uneventful. As they set out again, Kisegar whispers to Benedict, "The path ahead takes us across a lair of a deep naga. Hopefully it won't be out hunting or asking for tribute. But, if you don't want a fight -- and you really don't; it's a powerful spellcaster -- have some tribute out. Any magical trinket you're not interested in keeping should be sufficient. Or the dwarves."

Benedict will relate Kisegar's tale to the group.
"If this deep naga collects tribute from travelers in the form of magical items, then it should have a substantial hoard. If we know that it is out there, we can be ready. Maybe I show myself openly and pretend that I have tribute to offer? William and Aerel can prepare to interrupt its spells, or William can Dispel protections or illusions it may have. Haela can bring Grum and Amkarang into melee range. Haela and I can share our abilities to resist magic.
I think it's worth taking this thing on, but if you want to avoid it we have plenty of minor magic we could offer as tribute.
What do you all think?"

Aerel nods, "Well, if you want a part of that hoard, tell us what you know. What do we need to watch out for? What are her weak points? What sort of magic does she use?"
Benedict the Clever |
"The Duergar we fought had Darkvision that exceeded ours. I find it plausible that the same will be true for other residents of the Darklands. So we will need a way to see a greater distance."
Anybody have a way to cast Daylight?
"Aerel's pebble trick worked before. Advancing through cover or a fog cloud is another option - it hinders us, but it would hinder a foe with superior Darkvision just as much.
I worry that me going ahead in disguise, with the rest of you hidden behind and watching me, won't work out."

”I can put that light on an arrow for better range, but I fear that’s the extent of my talents in the area.”
