cohorts
If a cohort gains enough XP to bring it to a level one lower than your level, the cohort does not gain the new level—its new XP total is 1 less than the amount needed to attain the next level.
so, cohort is at character level - 2

First off: if you've posted in recruitment and you're actually reading this, don't say I didn't warn you. Stop reading now.
Guys, I'm confused.
I distinctly remember asking for a rogue, and that's about the only class we haven't seen in submission.
I love the detail some of the folks have put into it; but I have little faith in the characters. Most of the submissions cover (at least partially) one of your key abilities. I'm just not cool with that.
Monk? Monk of the Sacred Mountain?! Why not call him Oret while you're at it...
a necromancer - I mean, come on. Cala's got that one.
Alchemist? yeah we've worn out two already.
I think Irdril Tinúviel is a good match when it comes to character abilities, although I'm concerned she's got very similar appearance and behavior as Caladwhen (not as beautiful of course - that'd be impossible. Sorry, Cala.)
what about Cole then?
Oret Stonechild |
I would be fine with either, but I think I'm leaning towards Cole.
First, another support caster (with Good Hope/Haste) wouldn't be terrible, and we don't have anyone at the moment that excels at ranged combat. Plus, for skills, archaeologist bards are basically thieves without sneak attack positioning/sniping/whatever issues.
Second - and this might just be my ignorance of what's to come talking - I'm not sure that the Idril's skill set is going to be put to good use. How useful, for example, is rumor-mongering likely to be?
Caladwhen |
I'm with Oret on this, leaning towards Cole; his submission gives us range, stealth and some buffs. I feel a lot of the other characters cover areas we already have well under wraps (especially that last one... We don't need more Undead, between Cala and her cohort we have a silly amount of the walking dead at our service already).
In short, I'm putting my vote with Cole.
Talon Dalkar |
I agree with much of what Cala said (and not just because Talon likes her hehe). Backstory was more fleshed out and I really felt the depth of his character.
And yeah, rumor-mongering is fun, but I feel as if any character can do much the same with some details and a good charisma score. The actual ability just makes the effort lazy.
My vote is with Cole.

Between recruitment and work, I felt a little stretched thin. Glad this is out of the way.
I've sent Cole some background to work with, we should be moving forward soon - head on, back into the story of the terrible tower of tormenting toils! I'm hoping there's going to be something to kill again soon. We are starting to look like pansies, sitting comfortably up in that tower, drinking wine and eating dino-onna-stick...
Cole Adams |
you know its kind of weird, I looked when Talon said something and I found this.
Dismiss a Spell: Dismissing an active spell is a standard action that doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity.
Now this could lead you to believe any spell, but this is located under combat where it is only describing what action is required.
The rule is found later under spell casting and says.
(D) Dismissible: If the duration line ends with “(D),” you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell's effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell's verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
A spell that depends on concentration is dismissible by its very nature, and dismissing it does not take an action, since all you have to do to end the spell is to stop concentrating on your turn.
Now this is under Duration in spell casting section.
Figured it was best to move this to discussion instead of gameplay thread. Hey at first I though I learned something. Thats the cool thing about this game.
Hope others post soon. Meeting the wife for happy hour after work. May or May not have a RL game tonight. Waiting on DM to get back to me. So if nothing else gets posted before I check again will try and check in later tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks again for selecting me. I'm excited to be in a stable long running game and excited to see what happens after this book. We have tried to get others to run it but no takers yet :)
increddibelly |
I'm running a tabletop game of wotw as well. We're halfway book 3 now, and epic doesn't begin to cover it. On the way home last time, all players -experienced, long time gamers, who've seen most or all- were anxious for the next game like kids in a candystore.
Somehow this game suits my sour, haughty, disdainful nature, I guess. ;)

Whoop. A welcome post is in order.
Welcome, Cole! Glad to see you join our merry murderous band of villains.
Quite sorry if things are a bit slow right now. I have some blame in that, seeing as I find myself posting sporadically at best at the moment. However, I'm quite excited to see how well you go! I'm sure it'll be great.
On another note, if any of you celebrate the Easter holidays, I hope you enjoy them!
P.S. I still haven't fully updated my profile with the given magic items. Aside from the planned cloak of resistances, we should get around to spending the 18k of cash we have. I've already stated my preferences (upgrade to my Headband of Charisma, handy haversacks, and consumables).
Cole Adams |
@IB, are you against multi classing. I though in the long run about leveling in Anti-Paladin as well as it ties in the faith aspect of coal, but it is also for the benefit of making my saves better, but if you don't like it then I will stay strait bard. Thanks.
increddibelly |
I'm all for building a character instead of stats. Also, I believe that sticking with your class shows ambition to become the best of your kind, which matches the Asmodean ambition theme.
But - your character's first impression shows great religious zeal, so Cole seems to be a great candidate for an antipaladin.
Whatever happens, I'm going to find ways to kill you (sorry, comes with the job) and the harder you make that, the less time I can spend on storytelling, and then, in a way, everyone loses :-/
Cole Adams |
Sounds good :)
Yeah I don't know if I had him being so religious when I made him up but it seemed a good way to make him loyal to both the seventh and now the ninth and the Cardinal. As long as the contract is honored and its what Asmodeus wants he is good with it.

Who has the Rod of Elemental Spell (Acid), lesser? It was given to Caladwhen to pass on to Talon, who rejected it, so I think it remains with her?
Anyway, may I ask for it? I use blasting spells more often, and they're usually fire. Which is a problem when I come across anything fire-resistant.
And if Caladwhen can use Craft Rod when she reaches level 9 . . . well, that'll be fun! There's no reason not to have metamagic rods for casters.
If for some reason, we still don't have anything to spend the 18K petty cash on, then metamagic rods are an excellent investment. Extend, Intensify, Empower, and Quicken (when we reach that level) are good choices.

Int 9. "Educated man".
I did not realize that. Well spotted.
Well, he didn't say he was clever. But Cole is officially the dimmest light of your group by quite a margin - I'm sure the characters would notice fairly quickly.
I mean, you guys might be having a casual discussion about three-dimensional fluctuations of arcane fields, and Cole might not have anything more to add to that, than "Uhm, yeah, divisions are hard..."
However, this is the way Focus & Foible works; these are his rolls. So, we now have a challenging puzzle to explain why Cole has low int but massive knowledge checks...
I propose (please add / fix!)
Cole might realize he's not going smart enough to make any scientific discoveries, but he does have a way with people (massive CHA).
Perhaps Cole has spent much time with properly-clever people, hoping to compensate for his own...tardiness? And he has learned to reproduce what he's heard them say (which makes him appear cleverer than he actually is), but he's in no way able to actually understand what they're saying or draw conclusions from it?
Or would you feel that breaks his character - maybe we'll just have to move the numbers around a little bit...?
How do you feel about this?
Talon Dalkar |
Another thing, a lot of it can be stories and word-by-mouth (which is often how it is with bards).
Not to be demeaning and I'm not a classist, but look at rednecks. Some don't get a very advanced education, but from their family and friends they're taught a lot of practical things. How to clean a gun, how to find your way out of the woods if you're lost, what kind of chemicals are safe to make a fire with, and all sorts of other various information. And this is all just told around the campfire or at dinner.
Oret Stonechild |
Personally, I think of a low Int in terms of IQ.
If your IQ is high, it's easier for you to learn, but you could still easily be ignorant of many topics. Conversely, if your IQ is low, you could still put forth the effort to learn about many things (though, admittedly, it would be (possibly much) harder for the low IQ person than the high IQ person).
Or, if you prefer it a different way, there is a very distinct difference between being stupid and being ignorant.
Caladwhen |
Sorry, my post yesterday got abbreviated due to time constraint this weekend; rest assured I'll post later this evening to respond to the identify scroll (which I actually have on already made from way back when).
increddibelly |
there is a very distinct difference between being stupid and being ignorant.
I think that's more wisdom than intelligence - to know that you know nothing, versus the capacity to learn something new.
Being a parrot of information is not the same as comprehension. An engineering major can recite three dozen formulas they've learned that are completely accurate but still not know why they work or how to derive them.
That's what I meant. Good summary :)
Cole, does that work for you?
Cole Adams |
My overall education has nothing to do with my inteligence. It all comes from my class. Bardic Knowlege gives me +4 to all right now so even with my -1 its equal to me haveing a 16Int as far as knowledge is concerned.
SP's too are more class than Int. Compare a 18int Wizard to Me in this game. The Wizard would get 8sp/level. I get 7sp/level with my 9int.
increddibelly |
I take your word on the numbers, Cole - It's more about making sense of them. The INT 18 wizard would understand what he's saying, and Cole has just heard many stories (a LOT of them) and he can tell them in a fascinating way.
I mean - if someone told a new joke in a bar, with Cole's INT 9, the average farmer, with INT 10, would get the joke before Cole did.
Sindran Eithe |
Currently having internet troubles so that's another point in favor of me getting left behind at the Horn. :P
Cole, I hope you're getting a good idea of our group. Wait until you see them in combat!
For Sindran's role, consider this:
Fire. By itself has no force; it depends on its environment. Give it air, dry timber, a wind to fan the flames, and it gains a terrifying momentum, growing hotter, feeding off itself, consuming everything in its path. Never leave such power to chance.
That reminds me, Hexor's and Vexor's plates. They were with Morvius. Sindran has them now?
increddibelly |
off topic: a must see on intelligence
and while we're at it, dexterity...
Cole Adams |
increddibelly |
Cole, what you're asking there is a dead on spoiler.
Why would you go and do that? My guess is you're just making conversation, which is great. But if you honestly wanted to know, you could've used the search function - which works like a charm for the terms you mentioned (I just tried it, and there's your answer), or you could've asked me instead of the players?
Please do not drop spoilers.
Caladwhen |
Pretty sure it was an honest mistake; besides, weren't we aware of most of that stuff? Caladwhen found out about all the summoning rituals a long time ago when Halthus took her on a tour of the Horn before we sacrificed him.
Cole Adams |
I'm so sorry guys I though since you have been here and cleared the horn you found / knew that stuff. I should have asked IB first it was an honest mistake and won't happen again. I have no knowledge after the ritual. So sorry.
Caladwhen |
increddibelly |
thank you Cala :) I sincerely feel very proud about this.
This exam earned me a MCSD certificate - 'Microsoft Certified Solution Developer', which means I know a lot of stuff about making awesome software with modern technology.
It's exactly what I've been doing for a living ^_^ but at least now it's official ;)
Today was a Good day.
but now I've got time to get back to the Evil!!!
increddibelly |
but now I've got time to get back to the Evil!!!
except I don't! Booo!
The unfortunate combination of events such as a stag night-nay-weekend and a sudden promotion at work has swallowed my time. That's exactly NOT how I wanted to start the slaughter of the seventh. The only good thing is that I'm now feeling rather resentful, and I'm going to take it out on Elise and her sorry companions' collective arses.Wanna help?
They need to feel our every single frustration, every bitter resentment, whether they caused it or not - they must suffer for it.
I'm thinking scapegoat. Lightning rod. Punching bag. Lemure Devil...
Release your anger, folks!
