Hi from the rain forest and welcome, Iniga! Samoon’s backstory is somewhere, but he’s been away studying at Light for some time, so there’s certainly been a hiatus.

Samen Vloe Firenze |

I don't know how you feel about researching spells, but I would like to try to do so. Given what he's learned in the library and the experiences he's had up until now, Samen would very much like to make a spell "detect elementals".
In form and function, it would be similar to "detect undead", with the only difference being that it would also identify type of elemental like detect magic does with schools.
I think that could be fairly balanced by either putting it on the 3rd round of concentration or by making the spell require me to name the type of elemental I'm going to be attempting to detect.
What do you think?

Hubristic Efreeti |

That's very interesting! I'm going to say that you have "researched" that spell in the time you have already spent in the library (since it was exclusively about elementals).
(note - whatever the normal time and gold rules are for spell research, I don't really care about, because this is a flavorful and cool spell that makes sense for Samen to have)
However, you will need to spend another few days practicing it before you actually get it on your list.
I will look at the details of Detect Undead, I'll post my thoughts, and we'll come up with the final product soon.

Samen, to answer your in-game question, all the originals stay at Uluru. You could hire a scribe to make copies - there are plenty around.
In fact, that would actually be a logical cost to incur if you want to study this on the road. Looks like 3 scribes at a day's work would be 1 gp. Let's throw in 4 gp of ink and parchment and you have yourself enough copied material to research the spell on the road.
= 5 gp total.

SMALL CHANGES -
upped duration so that it is a narratively useful thing to cast while exploring a dangerous situation ;
changed wording to "opposing element", and "undead auras" was replaced with "elementals" ;
skill roll of spellcraft required to interpret complex elementals
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M/DF
EFFECT
Range 60 ft.
Area cone-shaped emanation
Duration concentration, up to 10 minute/ level (D)
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
DESCRIPTION
You can detect the aura that surrounds elementals. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you study a particular area.
1st Round: Presence or absence of elementals.
2nd Round: Number of elementals in the area and the strength of the strongest elemental present. If you are of an opposing element, and the strongest elementals’s strength is overwhelming (see below), and the creature has HD of at least twice your character level, you are stunned for 1 round and the spell ends.
3rd Round: The element type and location of each elemental. If an elemental is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location. If the element type is unusual, you must roll a spellcraft (that the staff gives you access to) to see how well you interpret the "aura".
Aura Strength: The strength of an elemental....etc...

No worries.
A heads up. My phone is currently dead (loose connector), so I'll be slower to respond than usual. Hopefully back to working order tomorrow.

Samoon Firenze |

Whew--still getting out of vacation mode. Will try to catch up tonight with 51 posts! And yeah, my wifi was bleeeeeahhhh while on vacation.

I have a working phone again! Once the headset charges.

Duly noted!

Context:
It's going to be about a two week journey, as the caravan as a whole only moves about 25 miles per day in mild winter weather.
(two weeks = 16 days)
I think I'll be speeding things up on days where nothing happens. How you use this time is up to you.
---
What are your goals, actions during this time?
--Samen: finish researching detect elemental spell
--Samoon: what are you hoping to get out of the priest? doing any alchemy, research, etc?
--Wamblee: ?
--Iniga: continue cultivating friendship with mercs. are you looking for info, trying to recruit them, etc?
I know Wamblee mentioned at one point the possibility of recruiting allies at the Winter Meet. Feel free to ask other oreads what the Meet is like (none of you has ever been to one) - that may help you plan the best way to approach the situation.

Wamblee Firenze |

Wamblee tries to remain watchful, and ponder the artefacts.

Iniga v'Breda |

Yup, i’m working on the mercy at present. As Iniga is still pretty much out of the loop - I don’t think that there is a lot of ‘information’ she would be able to ask about. She does want to get the relationship to a point where she could recruit / call on them for aid and she probably wants to understand their options on Army vs Temple dynamic / what’s been going on.
I’d talk to the priest but we got off in the wrong foot so that’s going to take time to mend.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Wamblee Firenze |

I might be too busy to post tomorrow.

Hubristic Efreeti |

It looks like we have a plan for everyone, which gives us a rough outline for what you will be doing the rest of the week:
--Wamblee: patrol and talk with Odakotah about the Meet
--Samen: research spell and enjoy some tshala
--Samoon: talk with priest and (patrol?)
--Marianne: patrol and practice archery
--Iniga: patrol and make friends with the swords
Question Iniga - when you are sharing combat stories with the mercs, do you talk about how you used to be in the army, or do you speak in more general terms?
I'll keep RPing the current conversations with Samoon, Iniga, and Samen (and Wamblee, if you choose to speak to anyone) for a few days.
I'm planning on advancing us by a week (so half the journey done) on Tuesday night.

Iniga v'Breda |

Yep, juries out on how my magic looks. I imagine my tattoos glow a bit when casting but Iniga is mostly going to be picking up buff spells in her spell list which dont tend to have noticeable visual effects. I'm open to ideas on that.
As for the mercs, I'll probably tell combat stories about me being in the army, but I won't obviously mention leaving it, If pressed, I'll come out and say it (and mention some excuse about 'wanting to see the world' or something), but Iniga would usually manipulate what she says to lead people to assume that she is still part of the army without explicitly stating it.

Samen Vloe Firenze |

I'm going to be on business travel until Thursday. Bot me as necessary.

Wamblee Firenze |

That's Wamblee's plan really.
I have a cold developing so I might be distracted from posting this week. Hopefully not.

Wamblee Firenze |

Cheers. Still in land of the living.

Not saying slow-burning.

Samen Vloe Firenze |

Turns out I had pneumonia the whole time I was on travel. I am tired. I hope to be well enough to rejoin things tomorrow, but my eyes are just glazing over the posts right now.

Wamblee Firenze |

Pneumonia is awful. I hope you recover soon.

Samoon Firenze |

I'm back from backpacking and was ultra tired yesterday (and working from home) :(
I will get a post in today!
And pneumonia is no joke. Please get well soon, Samen!

Wamblee Firenze |

Okay.

Iniga v'Breda |

No worries
I'm here, just unable to contribute to the conversation since you know, I don't know who you are talking about

Iniga v'Breda |

Changing my plan slightly in light of their response to try for a meeting with the priest. Keen to see if a bit of diplomacy might improve things.

Wamblee Firenze |

Good stuff. Been distracted, catching up.

Samen Vloe Firenze |

I'm sorry guys, I hadn't really thought about it, but I've got a vacation that snuck up on me. I'm going to be AFK until next Friday. Go ahead and bot me again :(.

Wamblee Firenze |

My posting may be patchy this weekend. I doubt I'll get to post tomorrow.

Iniga v'Breda |

Moving from one side of the country to the other to start a new secondment. Trying to decide what I need to crap into a suitcase that I'll live out of for the next few months and ditch everything else I own.
Expect limited activity for the next 48 hours or so, then my move should be complete, new job started and things in all likelihood resume some semblance of normalcy. Apologies for this, I have tried to limit how much this move would affect my activity.
