Size and weight of the sacred jar of ambergris, GM?
Nef stares at the writing on the jar of ambergris, her finger touching the word, Qualmaga. "Oren, if you haven't heard of it, and Jacinth and Reknar haven't heard of it, I don't think that Qualmaga is a where. I think Qualmaga may be a who or a what." She pauses, suddenly startled by the thought.
If this Qualmaga concerns Whale, there is one creature I can ask. I just have to find him.
Nef looks around the group. "We have one vote for attacking the demon now from Reknar, and one vote for waiting until tomorrow morning from me. I want to hear everyone else's votes. Which way are we going? Lani, Jacinth, Oren, Aikane?"
Nef waits patiently, for the answers. Either way they choose, she had a plan of action ready.

Jacinth furrows her brow for a moment, thinking hard. "Whether we chose to explore anywhere else today or not, I would be in favor of waiting one more night before we journey back to the statue."
Looking back in the direction of the cove where Rata and the others wait, she continues, "As with every other decision made here, it would be a risk - perhaps Maximilian's spirit would not be sufficient to block out the demon's presence from everyone, perhaps something else will happen that interrupts our rest. But if we can get a little more rested, especially Oren and 'Lani...our odds improve quite a bit. I am willing to take that risk, at least one more time."
She then turns and looks at the jar of sacred ambergris that Nef holds. "A holy relic from one of the Tulitan gods...would such a thing have any sort of aura or power that would be of help?"

Oren Mitabu |

"If Maxmillian can protect us even a little bit, I might get lucky enough to fight the dreams off tonight....if I can, then I can memorize all my spells, and might be able to help. For that reason alone, I say we hold off for just one day. If it doesn't work, I assume that I'll never rest on this damned island, and we might as well go ahead and chase the demon head on. Would that be okay for you, Reknar?"

Nefertiti Abdul |

Nef turns to Jacinth. "It sounds like the consensus is leaning towards waiting a night, Captain. After we get back to our charges and get them fed, may I have permission to do a flight out over the water? There's someone I need to talk to again."

Reknar. |

"You all do realize that we're standing around most of the day doing nothing, right?" - Reknar comments - "We have absolutely no idea of the resources this demon has at its disposal - every minute we do nothing, he could be stacking them against us, and preparing his defenses" - he adds, dropping his backpack heavily on the sand - "We're giving it all the time in the world" - he shrugs.
"I'm just saying" - the man grumbles, moving off to start looking for dinner.

The Kraken |

The decision made to return to the cove with the precious jar of ambergris and the other treasures looted from the Lashed Harpoon, you wend your way back through the overgrown jungle wilderness and rejoin Rata Fenn and your charges. There is no sign of Maximilian yet all seems more quiet and peaceful here than before.
You spend the rest of the day and evening gathering more food and also setting up shelters for the night. The day does pass quickly though a brief summer storm passes overhead, drenching all of you before departing as quickly as it came. Finding food here is almost too easy, considering your proximity to the jungle and also the ocean water. Your main course of fish is supplemented by tasty roots and nuts found in the jungle proper. While all of you get your fill, you do notice your charges do not partake and seem to have lapsed into another unresponsive state.
Feel free to RP at this point in time guys. You can use flex time spoilers if you like.
Even though you are still trapped here, the scene as the sun sets under the horizon is actually quite beautiful. The reddish orange glow of the evening rays reflecting off the high clouds produces a one of a kind sunset.
As night falls you all settle into your normal watch schedule hoping to gather enough rest for the spellcasters to replenish their magical spells. As sleep overtakes you, you all feel the demon Hawanapoki's presence in your minds once again yet this time the demon's effects seem mitigated by Maximilians ghostly spirit.
Spellcasters: Give me another Will save DC 15, with a +4 bonus for Maximilian's presence.
Time check 2200 hours, Day 8.

Nefertiti Abdul |

Jacinth, is it okay to assume permission to seek out Cetaceans was granted for that afternoon?
"I... I'm ready for that talk." Nef forces herself to take a deep breath, and sits down in the sand next to him.

Will Save DC 15: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 4 = 15
Though nervous with thoughts of the upcoming battle, Zem, and whatever may or may not be there for her with Reknar, Maximilian provides just enough of a buffer from Hawanapoki's evil presence to help Nef sleep through the night.

Jacinth Deepwarder |
While the group gathers up their finds and prepares to return to the cove once more, Jacinth nods in response to Nef's request. "That should not be a problem. As always, be careful when you go."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once camp is secured and everyone fed, Jacinth takes a few moments to simply sit and watch the sun sink over the horizon, marveling at the sunset's beauty. As she does, her thoughts turn to the future, not the group's this time, but her own.
Even if we manage to return to Port Shaw with the others, Maximilian is still gone. Though his spirit has forgiven me, I doubt his family will see it the same way...and who knows what that will mean for me, for the family name. Would Uncle Senegar decide that I have been too much of a nuisance for him and send me back to Mother and Father?
There had been a time where the thought of returning home would have filled her with joy. She had hated being sent away, hated the Razor and its strange peoples and their strange, primitive ways. Being sent home would have seemed a reward, not a punishment. But now...
I am not the same person that I was a week ago. Do I even want to return home? Who says that I have to return home or even return to Uncle Senegar? After this mess I certainly will not be welcome among the elite of Port Shaw...there would be little to return to. Perhaps I should make my own way, instead.
Her lips twitch in a smile as she gazes around at the camp, at the others milling around.
There will certainly be time to think on it, at any rate.
Will (DC 15): 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 4 = 25
Later, she beds down for the night feeling surprisingly at ease under the circumstances. She wasn't sure if it was simply Maximilian's presence or the knowledge that she had been forgiven, but sleep finds its way to her quickly despite the lingering presence of Hawanapoki in the back of her mind and she sleeps soundly through the night.
I think I still have some Wis damage, but a 24 should still get me there.
Oren was quiet on the beach as he still felt naked without his spell casting ability. He was nervous about attempting to sleep. What if I am haunted by the nightmares again? Can the ghost protect me? If I can't cast magic, what can I do?
He took his usual spot in the rest order. Amazingly, he woke up, opened one eye and looked around him, he felt....great. Best he's felt in days.
"It worked! I'm back in the game. Give me a few minutes to prepare my spells, and I will be ready. Let's go get that demon now. No time to waste!". He walked over and patted Reknar on the arm, letting him know he was prepared. He hugged Nef and the Captain as he walked by, humming a happy little tune.
Nefertiti Abdul |
Nef takes up a flight around the island, letting her voice carry. "Whale! Whale! I've told you stories every night. You asked me to free you, shared your regrets over killing for the monster who imprisons you. I told you the stories of my friends that we lost... I sang you their songs. It's time for us to work together. Come out! Let us speak of Qualmaga and the sacred ambergris!"
"Lets do that" - the man continues on tending to his weaponry - "I've noticed you acting strange around me, and I want this to be out in the open before it gets any of us too distracted, ends up having us making mistakes and getting someone killed" - staring at the blade in his polearm for a second, he seems pleased, and puts it down, turning to Nefertiti.
"You're a beautiful girl, and if anyone tells you otherwise you can send them speak to me" - Reknar now chuckles - "Beautiful girls attract attention, I'm sure you know that, and from the few tidbits I've heard, not always the best kind of attention" - he stands back and looks at her body unceremoniously - "Not only that, but you've got an amazing figure - not many would hesitate in trying to get you in their bed" - then back at her - "Its just how it is" - he shrugs, adding - "And something I notice you have been learning to live with"
Looking back at sea, Reknar continues on - "You've got some unfinished business with this Zem guy, so you just need to stop for a second and think how you want to carry yourself the next time you meet him - my opinion on all of this is irrelevant see? It is your opinion that counts" - he presses a finger on her chest - "If you want to tumble around with me in the sand, girl... Understand I wouldn't hesitate a second, and if you threw yourself at me I wouldn't care about this Zem character, or whatever history you have with him - it is none of my business, but the beautiful woman next to me would be" - he winks.
He stares straight at her hard, for a long moment - "Keep this in mind though - I am not looking for love - had it once and it ended in the worst possible way" - and continues on staring - "You, on the other hand, seem to be looking for the love of your life, and seem to think also that maybe this guy who bailed out on you..." - he chuckles again - "Just kidding. This guy who had to leave, may be it, right? So if he may be it, how would you feel looking into his face after having shared my side in a bed, or in the sand?" - Reknar raises an eyebrow.
"Look, if you don't care, I don't care - I'm just throwing this out to you because you've begun to get under my skin. You can call it advice or whatever, and you can use it or not" - the warrior gets back to the familiar shrugging - "I don't care. And besides, you know where I bunk down to sleep" - he finishes with a smile.
I still need Will saves from Aikane and Reknar to avoid being fatigued. Sorry about the confusion there.
.
Rata Fenn Will: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 4 = 22 succeeded.
The morning dawns with the usual foggy mist, but soon grows bright and clear as the sun burns away the tendrils of mist. The cove here is peaceful and quiet, yet you all sense the frustrated presence of your demonic host in the air...tinged with a note of desperation. You all have a sense today will bring a final resolution one way or another.
After packing up your gear you turn to the ghostly apparition of Maximilian who has promised to watch over his former shipmates. "The beasts and animals will not approach me. They will be here when you return. Thank you once again Nefertiti, Jacinth and everyone!"
You set off along the trail heading eastward toward the rising sun. After a short distance you see the trail branch off and head down the southern fork. Not far along the trail branches off again, leading to a small patch of the narcotic black root known as maht or Granpappy Blackskull grows in an isolated clearing. Now, the indigenous flora has reclaimed much of the field and reduced the maht crop to a mere fraction of its former yield.
The clearing here is otherwise empty so you move onward. As you travel along the trail you are amazed at how eerily quiet it has been. After about an hour of moving along the trail you see you are getting close to the clearing where the statue of Hawanapoki marks his territory and lies in wait for you...
OK I am pausing this here so if you want to cast prepatory spells you may do so at this time.
Time check 0945, day 9.
Ke'ahilani |
Blearily looking at the scene...
Knowledge:Nature: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 Nothing.
He shook his head, rubbing his temples.
"Well, I have one extract of Enlarge Person. Do one of you fighting types want it?" He asked aloud.
Oren Mitabu |
Know. Nature 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
"It's a good thing that maht field is being overgrown. That's about the most addictive junk you can get into. It's a real monkey on your back for the most addicted. "
Oren uses the break to cast his two preparory spells. False Life to gain 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 hit points which last for five hours and uses a charge from his wand to cast Mage Armor. While we are exploring this particular area, Oren will liberally use his wand every hour to keep the spell active.
Jacinth Deepwarder |
"I wonder who cultivated it...the original Tulitan inhabitants or my own people?" Jacinth murmurs, then shakes her head. "Actually never mind, I am not sure that I want to know at this point."
As they near the clearing with the statue, Jacinth keeps watch as the group pauses and begins to prepare for the upcoming battle. "I would say Reknar could make the best use of your extract, 'Lani, provided the tunnels and spaces beyond are large enough to accommodate his increased size," she suggests. "And do not forget that strange powder you showed to us a few days ago - even though I am still not sure of what it does, you and some of the others behaved as though it would be a great help to us."
She then digs into her pack and pulls out a small vial. "I have been carrying this for some time; I believe it has the same effect as one of the spells you just cast on yourself Oren - False Life? Should I use it myself or would it be best given to someone else?"
Jacinth is referring to the cold iron weapon blanch that Lani has; I'd say use it for Reknar and maybe Rata's weapons. Nef has her cold iron kopesh but I don't think anyone else can use it effectively besides her. Jacinth also has a Potion of False Life that someone can use.
Nefertiti Abdul |
Nef looks at him, crestfallen.
"You're right. I've been dealing with how others react to my appearance all my life." Her voice is soft, and almost toneless. "I guess I was hoping that I would be more to you than just another pretty face." She sighs. "We've become friends, and I trust you with my life. I was hoping that maybe you also noticed my mind, my spirit, my character. I certainly noticed yours."
When she meets his gaze, her eyes are bleak. "I feel... feel an almost electric attraction to you. When I'm near you, I... I guess it doesn't matter."
She picks up a rock, and throws it towards the water, watching it sink. "I never knew what sex was really like, not until we had those visions near the statue." She shudders, remembering the violation. The fear and powerlessness that that she had felt. "Now I know. Sex is violent and shameful.* And without love or affection, utterly meaningless."
"I won't settle for less than love, Reknar. And you're right. If there's a chance for love with Zem, I owe it to myself to find out." Then she pauses. "Thank you for your honesty. You could have gotten me into your bed with a lie. You honored me with the truth instead. I will remember that."
*Without experience, Nef doesn't realize the utter falsity of the demon's vision.
Nef casts Magic Circle against Evil. +2 to group saves against Evil Creatures, and +2 to group AC.
"Rata's got a cold iron blade too." Nef looks at the group. "Does anyone want to use my Khopesh? It is cold iron, but I plan to be dumping spells on the demon to hurt it. If anyone thinks they can make use of it... They are welcome to try."
Lani, are you going to be doing mutagens + rage in the demon battle? Your bombs might not hurt the demon, but you might be able to hurt it with melee. The -4 to proficiency will get partially off-set by Inspire Courage and Flag... And at least with the Khopesh we don't have to keep reapplying the weapon blanch.
Reknar shakes his head - "Pretty faces are good when its dark - you pay them a drink, and leave them asleep the next morning" - he smiles as usual - "You are jumping into conclusions again - if I thought you were just a pretty face, we wouldn't be having this conversation"
She picks up a rock, and throws it towards the water, watching it sink. "I never knew what sex was really like, not until we had those visions near the statue." She shudders, remembering the violation. The fear and powerlessness that that she had felt. "Now I know. Sex is violent and shameful.* And without love or affection, utterly meaningless."
"That..? That's not sex girl - that is a demonic perversion of what it actually is, and has nothing to do with reality" - again he looks at the shape of her body - "You'll understand that sometime, no need to hurry - but believe me, it is a good thing, and nothing like that"
Not actually sure Reknar knows exactly what Nefertiti saw - going a little freeform here :/
"It's not? But it seemed so..." She breaks off, hurling another rock at the sea. "So, it was a lie. Like everything else about our damnable host."
She pauses a bit, listening to his voice. "Reknar, when I came to the Razor, I wasn't looking for love. I was looking for my purpose. Zem was a surprise. He guided me through strange territory, taught me Tulitan language and customs, gave me all of his time and gentleness... I wasn't looking for love, but it found me anyway. You're right. I do have to chase it. To find out if it's real, or just another illusion of the Razor."
She grabs Reknar's hand, and squeezes it. "Thank you, friend. I don't know who it was who hurt you so badly, but I think you deserve love too. You're a good man. Let no one tell you differently."
Nefertiti Abdul |
Nef nods, and unbuckles the belt sheath holding her Khopesh. She then hands it to 'Lani. "I know you will."
Jacinth Deepwarder |
"Well...if most everyone else has a cold iron weapon, perhaps we could do something for some of my arrows, then? Or Aikane's daggers?" Jacinth checks her quiver, taking a brief inventory. "I have twenty-two arrows left, as well as four that are imbued with a small amount of magic. I also have my dagger, though I think I would prove more effective with my bow."
"Definitely a lie" - the large warrior winks at Nefertiti - "Like I said, clear your head, and I'll show you one of these days - all in good friendship of course" - in spite of the conversation's tone, Reknar seems in a good mood.
"Do it girl - you'll be just fine, you'll see" . he adds, gripping her hand and putting an arm around her neck, pulling the priestess close, and speaking in her ear - "You are wrong though Nefertiti, I am not a good man - just there are so damn few of those around these days, even someone like me can pass by one" - from this angle, she cannot see him, but Reknar is clearly smiling.
He then holds her at arms' length - "Damn! You do smell fine" - shaking his head, he adds - "We good?"
"We all set then?" - Reknar nods - "Who's gonna scout the entrance to the tunnel?"
Nefertiti Abdul |
"I'll keep that in mind." She smiles and says, "Yes, we're good."
Jacinth Deepwarder |
Jacinth looks at the weapon blanch for a moment, thinking. "Let us put one dose on one of Aikane's daggers and the other on some of my arrows. That way each of us has some ability to damage this horror."
Once everyone seems ready, she nods in response to Nef's words. "Aikane could teach me a thing or two, to be honest. Perhaps he can lead and I shall follow behind him, if a rear guard is not needed for the group as a whole."
Unless anyone has any better ideas, Jacinth will apply a dose of weapon blanch to her 4 +1 arrows and 6 regular arrows.
Round 2: Everybody is up! Map is up to date.
Jacinth Deepwarder |
As Reknar deftly drops the two charging hawanis before they can so much as get in a swing with their claws, Jacinth turns and swiftly falls back to where the path meets the clearing. Having heard Oren's cry of pain, she takes aim at the hawani that menaces him.
"Oh no, we will not be doing this again! Get off of him!" she snarls as she fires another arrow.
He stepped to (I,23), popped a catalyst into a shell, then threw the fizzing bomb at Hawani Number 3.
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 4 = 20 for 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6) + 4 = 11 fire damage on Hawani number 3 and six points of fire splash damage on all surrounding squares (Ref save DC16 for half splash damage), except for Rata Fenn.
BOOM! Thundered the bomb as Ke' capered merrily. "Heee hehehehe!"
Oren Mitabu |
Will 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
As usual, Oren decides he needs some rest at the most inopertune time.
Wedjat |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
When Oren falls, Wedjat can hear Nef's scream of attack. Oren's inopportune need to rest opens up a charge lane. At Nef's urging, Wedjat charges Hawani 7, the Hawani that attacked and hurt Oren.
"Screeeee!"
Hey, that's my Lardbutt!
"Screeeee!"
They still taste terrible...
The Kraken |
'Lani sees his fellow sailor pressed by two of the hawanis and lobs a bomb at one of them scorching him badly. The other one tries to twist out of the way of the flames...
...and manages to avoid the worst of the blast.
Jacinth manages to wing the hawani threatening to savage Oren who collapses to the ground once again. Wedjat finishes the job quite handily. Hawani #7 is DEAD.
Nefertiti, Reknar, Aikane, and Rata Fenn are up!
Nefertiti Abdul |
Still riding Wedjat, Nef maintains her bardic performance, but turns in the saddle to stare hard at hawanis 4 and 6, the ones hanging back by the creepy altar.
Why haven't they come forward to attack? What are they guarding? Is it just the entrance to Hawanapoki's lair, or is there some other surprise that they have in store for us?
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Reknar. |
Mighty Kraken, I took some liberties with the map, since Reknar should be enlarged - hope that is ok?
"MY turn now!" - Reknar's roar echoes throughout the whole clearing, as he steps back, and swings mightily against the hiwani to his right, the unusually large bardiche swishing through the air at an amazing distance.
I am stepping back because I assume that if hiwani #4 moves in on Ke'ahilani or me, he will eat an AoO, correct?
Bardiche attack on hiwani #6: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 + 3 + 2 = 28
Damage if it hits: 2d8 + 7 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 6) + 7 + 6 + 3 = 23
Oren Mitabu |
"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..."
The Kraken |
Nefertiti sees the hawanis are filled with rage and it is taking all of their will not to simply charge in and savage you all. She can see they seem to be waiting for something...and she has a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with her.
Oops, I forgot about Reknar's increased size. My bad.
Reknar slices another Hawani in half with a prodigious swing of his bladed haft! Hawani #6 takes 23 points of damage and is DEAD.
Aikane, and Rata Fenn are up! Rata Fenn will wait until Aikane attacks.
Nefertiti Abdul |
Nefertiti sees the hawanis are filled with rage and it is taking all of their will not to simply charge in and savage you all. She can see they seem to be waiting for something...and she has a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with her.
Nef raises an eyebrow. "Well, that's ominous..."
