This world is relatively low magic. That is, there are no magic shops.
I am sorry. I thought that was clear.
To reiterate a point from long ago, a will use a weapon as an example.
A standard longsword would be something like THIS. It'll be made of passable, but cheap steel. The fitting will be purely functional AT BEST.
Whereas a +5 longword would be something like THIS. It is made of the highest quality materials made specifically for that purpose. They are often adorned and treasured as heirlooms.
Magic items exist, but they are very rare. You four probably represent 5-10% of the truly magical items on the planet.
For this game, a magic sword would be a flaming sword or a vorpal sword. A holy sword would simply be a sword blessed by a god's favor.
A necromancer anathame is a magical treasure while an amulet of natural armor is more like a totemic pendant to emulate the qualities of the natural world.
Does this help make more sense?
Therefore, to copy new spells requires the meeting of another wizard or some such powerful being.

On an unrelated note, I'm trying to build an arcane archer and am at a road block. If you would like to submit your thoughts, I have a thread here. I bring this to you because you guys are some of the better players I know on the boards and if you choose to give feedback then I know it will be good!

Esther Pennycoat |

Esther current battle plan is:
Erianna with her unarmed strike does her thing.
Esther can glitterdust as many as possible (if needed)
Allowing Erianna and Erasmus to grab a weapon.
Erianna will slip of her bonds (using a liberating command if needed)
she can pull her bow from her efficient quiver (she gave her shield and club to the solders).
Possible solution for Mortimer predicament:
-Cast a detect magic and identify the manacles in order to get an idea on how to take them off.
-Break his hand so that the naturally slip off and then heal him aftewards

Erianna |

Guys, since we have come upon a sort of respite moment, I wanted to throw this out there - after the Crane feat tree change, Erianna will have a much harder time playing the frontline part, as she did for example against Targ.
From that fight I guess it is also obvious that we need a frontliner nonetheless, to eat up some of the brunt of the bad guys's attacks?
So I wanted to know everyone's opinion (and DSP's ruling) on the possibility of me changing characters, or simply re-crunching Erianna as a different character - maybe a barbarian or paladin type? Way more resistant, and harder hitting.
What say you all? I can even post a sample of what I am looking at to help along the decision for a yes or no.
EDIT: Forget the paladin, just remembered they are not an allowed class ;)

Crane Style (Combat, Style)
Your unarmed fighting techniques blend poise with graceful defense.
Prerequisites: Dodge, Improved Unarmed Strike, base attack bonus +2 or monk level 1st.
Benefit: You take only a –2 penalty on attack rolls for fighting defensively. While using this style and fighting defensively or using the total defense action, you gain an additional +1 dodge bonus to your Armor Class.

Crane Wing (Combat)
You move with the speed and finesse of an avian hunter, your sweeping blocks and graceful motions allowing you to deflect melee attacks with ease.
Prerequisites: Crane Style, Dodge, Improved Unarmed Strike, base attack bonus +5 or monk level 5th.
Benefit: Once per round, when fighting defensively with at least one hand free, you can designate one melee attack being made against you before the roll is made. You receive a +4 dodge bonus to AC against that attack. If you using the total defense action instead, you can deflect one melee attack that would normally hit you. An attack so deflected deals no damage and has no other effect (instead treat it as a miss). You do not expend an action when using this feat, but you must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed.

Erianna |

Don't get me wrong guys, I really like Erianna, and the balance of in and out of combat utility.
I am just thinking back a tad to our last real big fight and how it really needed a strong frontliner to keep Targ in check - this character right here is resourceful in a pinch, with the added spellcasting, etc., but was it not for crane wing, and she would be dead in one round - actually, if any of those crits hit her, she would be dead in half a round ;)
NOTE: As a quick reminder, Targ was swinging at +27/+22 to hit, for 2d6+26/+21 to damage - that first attack will not miss me a lot of the time ;)
And I'm just not sure how that +4 dodge bonus stacks with the remaining defensive bonuses Erianna can stack.
And I am having fun GM DSP, in spite of not having enough time to post as much as I would like - don't worry.
I just want to keep on being able to perform that role efficiently is all - but what the hey, lets keep Erianna in the game, and see how she pans out.

Dodge bonus sta - correct Esther.
That's why I don't like the one big bad evil guy. Either he's powerful enough to one shot you or he just gets swarmed and isn't a threat. I'd rather have a boss with just a few levels on you and a bunch of mooks. Easiest way to make a challenge for a level 5 party...make a level 5 party with a level 8 leader!
I never liked crane style anyways, regardless of the fact that it was broken. The only defensive style I really liked was turtle style, and mostly because that was just hilarious.
