My eyes immediately focus on the masterwork short sword, and I quickly grab it! I also take the potion of resistance. Nice!

"Well, it was awfully nice of whoever left those there to... leave them there. I mean, this stuff'll come in handy, right?"
Kieran glances over the items and decides it's best if they go to the rest of the party; she's no good with a rapier, can't fit comfortably into a breastplate, and would feel as if she were stepping on someone's toes if she were to take one of the remaining potions... but silently calls dibs on the next bit of loot they stumble across.
"So," she says, "I guess we should try out that other door. If we can use this place as a headquarters, awesome. I just hope we don't come back here to find that angler fish sleeping in my bed... getting the sheets all slimy..."

Once everyone else takes their choices, Orvan will offer to carry what is remaining.
"If no one else needs it, I could use the armor."
If there are no objections, he changes out his normal scale for MW Scale, and puts the other things in his backpack.

I approach the metal door and examine it to see if it is locked...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Once unlatched, I open the door and peer inside.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Strangways will keep an eye on Anevia so he can alert the group in case something happens.
The door is unlocked and easily swings inwards.
The room beyond the "Refuge" seems to be a workshop of some kind, dimly lit and covered in dust. Strange, undecipherable machines lie forgotten haphazardly among the tables and workbenches.

I carefully survey the the room, to see if I recognize the use or purpose of the machines, devices or contents within:
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Knowledge Engineering: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Strangways, do you detect any magical emanations in this room? Kieran, what do you think about this machinery?

Strangways casts Detect Magic and surveys the room.

Whaaaat? Kieran hates machines. Why would she even... ahh, who'm I kidding?
Can I take 20 on the Knowledge: Engineering check for a 28? Because we're in no rush, and that's exactly what Kieran would do in this situation.
Kieran rushes ahead of the rest of the group as soon as the machines come into view and begins examining their workings, oblivious to any dangers that might be lurking about (which means she isn't bothering with a Perception check).
A room full of bizarre machines with beds next door? Kieran begins seriously considering the logistics of moving down here for an extended stay; perhaps the angler fish is the landlord?

An eerie silence envelops the room . . .

Kieran glances back at Anevia, eyes wide through her murky goggles. She whispers back: "Hey... Aneeevia..." She wiggles her fingers at her and makes a ghostly sound.
Clearly, if it was meant as a warning to be cautious, Kieran has not quite gotten the message.

Whispering...Don't you think this area is strange? On the other side is a place for housing residents, and in here there are lots of strange devices...but where are the people who lived here?

Kieran shrugs. "Cheap rent? Maybe that slime wasn't always around. I'd wager they've either been run off thanks to the mutant fish and ooze puddles, or the residents here have very questionable tastes." Seemingly satisfied with her own answer, she returns to examining the equipment.
