Strangways is a scholar, not a fighter, primarily concerned with seeking out a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the universe. He bears no ill will towards any person or group, except to the extent that they interfere with his quest for knowledge, especially when their reasons for interfering are arbitrary or unreasonable. He is not seeking revenge for anyone's death, his upbringing was not marred by trauma and he much prefers the company of people who get along.
Strangways believes in an economy based on division of labor. It makes little sense to have a shoemaker making swords and a blacksmith making shoes. Likewise, Strangways believes in leaving the fighting to the fighters and the healing to the clerics and is more than happy to support them in doing what they do best.
Strangways is particularly interested in the study of illusions, his interest in what is real versus what is not having been sparked by his studies in epistemology and metaphysics. He was inspired by the scholarship of a famous cleric, commonly known as Berkeley, who first posited that there may be no reality apart from its perception.
Unfortunately, wizards who acquire arcane knowledge are not required to file written copies of that knowledge with a central library in a civilized city with a pleasant climate for scholars such as Strangways to study. Thus he is often forced to endure mediocre meals, surly innkeepers and life in the wild in service of his quest for knowledge.
