GM Fiendish |
The steadily expanding dust cloud continues moving in your direction, you judge it likely to hit as the others are climbing down, even if they started immediately before Flynn and Lenneth finish investigating the cave.
Flynn and Lenneth make it down to the bottom of the canyon and Lilith's lights hover at the entrance. The passageway goes back twenty feet or so, then it becomes impossible to see further due to the twists and turns, you'd have to explore deeper to see wher it goes, but one thing is for sure, there is a passageway leading deeper in to the rock.
Flynnvas Merryweather |
I can't see much back here. Flynn shouts up to the others. But that dust cloud is going to hit any second, get down here!
Is there any time for Flynn to fly back up and grab someone? Sky is just about strong enough to carry one of the lighter medium-sized characters in her claws as a medium load - definitely she could take Whisper or Aura
Feldus Roni |
I vote for Sky grabbing Aura first, since I believe Whisper could climb the wall more easily.
"GO!" Feldus yells to the others. Once they have scurried down the rope he follows behind. Feldus will take 10 on his climb check, which he can do while threatened, for total of 20.
Lilith Sylvari |
Lilith begins to climb down the knotted rope. Once within 20' of the ground she can shift down.
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17
GM Fiendish |
ValexBot begins clambering down the silk rope, reciting under his breath a paragraph from a manual on physical exercise he read once, striving to recall the exact technique and trying not to think too hard aabout how far away the ground is.
Whisper waves Skyfall away and pushes a glaring Aura at the roc, who senses her master's urgency and wastes no time, claws resting on Aura's shoulders as she moves to pick her up. In a panic, Aura flinches at the movement and steps backwards, out over the drop...
...as the dust cloud billows all around, she falls out of sight...
Her eyes going wide, Whisper lets go of Lenneth's offered hand and she pushes her in the direction of the canyon floor after Aura...
Fly checks please from anyone going after her...
Lenneth Barlow |
Lenneth gasps as Aura flails away from Skyfall and tumbles over the edge of the cliff; she desperately tries to dive after her but in her heart she knows it's no good, she can only move so fast...
Fly: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
______
Using Wings of Darkness gives her speed of 60 feet and good maneuverability.
GM Fiendish |
Cats cannot climb ropes as that would require appendages they do not possess. Cats may instead however attempt to climb down the rock face itself, however this does have a climb check of 25
Lenneth swoops downwards, almost as quickly as Aura fell...
disappearing from sight in to the dust cloud...
Perception check please Lenneth
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Sorry the boards were down for me for basically the entire day
Sky fly: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Flynn tries to urge Skyfall into a dive after Aura but with the dust and detritus blowing up the bird panics and veers itself away before it's eyes get damaged.
Melo |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Melo looks back at the cloud rushing towards them he shifts back and jumps for the rope.
Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Clinging on he attempts to climb down. "Did you grab her?!" He shouts out into the darkness.
Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
GM Fiendish |
Lenneth is unable to see Aura, and Skyfall seems disoriented by the dust cloud. As the pair circle, Melo begins climbing down the rope. Despite the feline claws he seems to me making headway, then the rope is buffeted by the winds driving the dust cloud, and he is falling...
Melo, you climbed 20 ft down before slipping so you're 180 ft up, so that's 18d6 falling damage unless you or the party do something...
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Ok this might sound crazy... but what check would it be to jump from Skyfall's back and catch Melo around the waist as he falls past me?
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Using Adaptable Luck to get a +2 to this check
Check: 1d20 ⇒ 11
If it is a reflex save to catch him it will be +7 for a total of 22
Flynn wheels Skyfall away from the dust cloud, the stinging sand and rocks blasting into his face and Sky screeching in protest eventhough he feels how eager she is to dive after Aura.
Then, he sees Melo in his human form, his handhold crumbling from beneath him and then he is tumbling too, crazily turning end over end as he plummets to the ground.
Flynn acts on instinct. In truth, if he had a moment to think perhaps he would take a different action... but then perhaps not. These people had become his family over the last months and wouldn't you do anything to protect your family?
He kicks his feet out of the leather straps on the flanks of Skyfall's barding and in an instant pulls himself into a crouching position onto her back....
....and jumps!
Ok so the vey badly thought out plan is if Flynn can catch Melo in mid-air, both of them will plummet to the ground but Flynn's Boots of the Cat will reduce the damage to a minimum - 18. I'm hoping Melo will either get the benefit of that too :/
Melo |
Melo too worried about the others takes his mind off the rope for a moment and slips unable to grab on he falls. All the breath is knocked out of him as he shouts out falling straight to the bottom unable to help himself.
Save meee
Lenneth Barlow |
With everything happening so quickly, Lenneth scarcely has time to react - just as she realizes Aura has disappeared into the dust cloud, she watches in horror as Melo tumbles off the rope and plummets towards the ground as well.
"MELO!"
______
Does Lenn need to keep making checks to try and fly down/see?
Lilith Sylvari |
Lilith cannot do anything. In a normal setting she would have feather fall in her book and would cast it with her bonded item, but she is missing a number of normally must have spells that she simply has not found.
Lilith looks on in horror as the druid slips.
Unsure if Lilith started climbing first, which was my intent, and how far down she might be.
Valex |
Not caught up yet, but Valex has feather fall, if he is in any position to help. GM, please bot as appropriate! I should be back in the swing of things by Tuesday!
GM Fiendish |
Lilith winces as she clings to the rope, but Melo falls past her, missing knocking her from the rope by a hair's breadth. You're 40 ft down the rope, the dust cloud is 20 ft below you now
In a heartbeat everything seems to have erupted in to chaos, as Melo falls, Flynn leaps from Skyfall's back and grabs the druid around the waist as they both fall out of sight in to the dust cloud below.
Valex shouts an incantation, flinging his hands out as Melo and Flynn disappear from sight.
...as you continue to fall it strikes you that you have been falling a while, longer than perhaps you believed it would... and then the ground appears a few feet below you and you smash in to it...
yet your landing, whilst ungainly and leaving you sprawled across the canyon floor, appears to have left you unscathed. You are far from out of the woods however, as visibility is down to five feet, and you have no idea whereabouts on the canyon floor you landed...
the wind begins to howl.
Survival check please gents!
Lenneth stares desperately after Aura, but unless she wants to dive in to the dust cloud where visibility will be reduced to a few feet, there is little she can do
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Flynn sprawls as he hits the ground. He takes deep gulps of air as he runs his hands over himself, almost too afraid to do so in case his body has gone into shock and he suddenly feels a protruding bone punching through his flesh.... but thankfully he seems unscathed. That is, except for the dust clogging his nose and mouth.
He rolls over and retches, getting as much of the stuff out as he can before tying the scrap of shirt he was using to protect his head from the sun over his face.
Melo! he roars. Are you alright? he fumbles around until he feels the druid, also pulling himself to his feet.
I can't see a bloody thing!
Survival: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Meanwhile, Skyfall screeches in protest as Flynn falls. She frantically circles around the dust cloud, her calls loud even in the whipping wind.
Fiendish, I can't communicate with Skyfall at this distance so please feel free to take control of her :)
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Desperate to discover the fate of Aura, Flynn, and Melo, Lenneth takes a deep breath and dives down into the cloud, doing her best to shield her eyes with one arm as she descends.
I think you'll probably need a fly check for that Lenneth, especially if you want to descend at a steeper angle than 45 degrees :/
Feldus Roni |
Reduced to a role of helpless bystandeer, Feldus mutters vehemently under his breath as he scurries down the rope as fast as his hands can move, aided by his natural skills in climbing, until he reaches the bottom. He does not call out for his pack-mates, instead sniffing the air for traces of them.
Lilith Sylvari |
Nearly choking on the dust Lilith tries to to breath through her sleeve and climbs down as fast as she dares, feeling disparate to know the fate of her friends.
Melo |
Melo stumbles to his feet the fall not hurting him but disorientating him.
Spitting out whatever the cloud was kicking up into the air he covers his face as best he can. "Flynn.. I don't know what happen but we survived that fall!" He shouts over the loud whipping sound of wind. Now finally looking around he attempts to work out where they could be.
Survial: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
GM Fiendish |
Skyfall spins around in frantic circles, head whipping this way and that as she caws in frustration, her excellent vision no help to her finding her master in all this dust.
Lenneth flies down in to the cloud...
Survival check if you're staying to look, otherwise it's back to the others.
Feldus rapidly climbs down the rope
In front of you is the cave entrance, but of the others there is no sign...
moments later...
Lilith climbs down hand over hand
Lilith Sylvari |
Lilith, her eyes wide Grabs Feldus's shoulder. Melo! What happened to Melo? Lilith asks, her voice a near plea. She begins to look around on the ground for the druid.
Feldus Roni |
"Calm down Lilith! We'll find them" Feldus barks softly as he begins sniffing the air cautiously while trying to keep the dust from getting into his lungs. "They must still be above us..." He shields his eyes as he peers through the dust.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29 Scent.
Flynnvas Merryweather |

I'm quite confused at the logistics of this situation so I drew this highly artistic interpretation. Fiendish, is what I'm saying right here? I thought we were climbing down to the first cave; Melo, Aura and Flynn fell and since then we have found another cave entrance. Is that right?
GM Fiendish |
Nice drawing Flynn :) So mostly yes on your layout, with a couple of caveats. The dust cloud came from a cave opening on the far side of the canyon, the cave the party was climbing down to was on the near side. Melo and Flynn do not know if they are on the near or far side of the canyon...
Feldus sniffs the thick air, and despite the dust-laden environment, manages to catch a scent... of Aura, she's close by. Of Melo and Flynn he smells nothing.
Wolf and Whisper join Lilith, Feldus and Valex by the cave entrance.
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Melo, come on! We've got to get inside or we'll choke to death!
He heads into the cave but very soon the darkness of the dust cloud is replaced with the darkness of the cave.
Please tell me you can light the way....? Flynn asks hopefully, drawing his longsword. All my stuff is in Skyfall's saddle bags.
Melo |
Melo follows Flynn closely as they get to the entrance of the cave he draws out his club the feeling is so strange not in his normal lion form. "I'm not sure how good I'll be if we get into a fight down here." He says as he casts a spell into his club and it begins to light up. "That's one problem solved." He waves his club about attempting to see just where they are.
Percpetion: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Survival: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
"Thank you... You saved me. I... The cloud and Aura, I lost my grip and just fell."
Flynnvas Merryweather |
** spoiler omitted **
What do you think we should do, hold up here and wait for the others to find us or try to make our way up and see if we can signal them somehow? I'm worried about Aura though, she fell and I didn't see any sign of her....
Lilith Sylvari |
Now I am confused. lol. Didn't Melo fall past Lilith, almost knocking her from the rope? That means he is below her somewhere. Right?
Flynnvas Merryweather |
Now I am confused. lol. Didn't Melo fall past Lilith, almost knocking her from the rope? That means he is below her somewhere. Right?
My professional-level visual design is how I understand it. Melo and Flynn at the bottom, everyone else in the middle and Aura ???
It's the middle of the night where Fiendish is but hopefully she will be able to clarify if I'm wrong in her next posting period
Feldus Roni |
Feldus holds up an arm to get the others attention. "Aura. She is close by." Muttering a minor spell Cantrip: Light. a soft glowing sphere appears in his hand. "Now she can find us." Without wasting any further time he heads towards where the scent is strongest.
Flynnvas Merryweather |
OK, let's wait here for a few minutes and see if the dust clears. I hope the others are ok.
GM Fiendish |
Flynn: Your new pic shows the state of affairs, including the fact that you have no idea which cave entrance you are at. Important note: You could only see two cave entrances when you started, the one opposite that the dust billowed out of, and the one you were climbing down to.
Lilith: Melo fell past you yes, though now out of sight, and they may or may not have moved since then...
Feldus' light illuminates the immediate surroundings, but in the murk of the dust-laden air, doesn't travel that far. The others would need to be very close to use it as a beacon. Regardless, Feldus follows his nose, sneezing frequently, until he reaches a body slumped on the floor, Aura.
Melo |
Melo looks to Flynn his face registering the tracks at the same time. "This could be bad." He whispers now. "Where are we... I'm starting to worry about the others."
Can I roll knowledge on the tracks?
Lenneth Barlow |
A bit late, but let's try to catch up...
Though she can't see any sign of Aura or even Melo or Flynn, Lenneth desperately continues trying to look for her missing family amid the cloud...
Survival: 1d20 ⇒ 15
...but the swirling, choking dust makes it all but impossible to see anything. Reasoning that the only way for any of them to go would've been down, she continues descending the final few feet to the ground.
"AURA! FLYNN, MELO! CAN YOU HEAR ME!?" she calls into the howling wind.
Lilith Sylvari |
Following Feldus, and still controlling her dancing lights Lilith runs to Aura. I can help her, I think. she qualifies. She then quickly examines and then casts Infernal healing on the girl.
Profession Doctor: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
GM Fiendish |
Valex arrives down the rope, leaving everyone back together except Melo and Flynn, who seem to be lost somewhere in all the dust.
Feldus and Lilith seem unable to rouse Aura, though Lilith's spell covers the girl in dark energy which seems to be hungrily snatched and absorbed by her body. She shudders and wakes up, glancing around and then shakily standing. Indigo appears by her side, like he just walked out from behind her.
Lenneth's attempt to find the missing men is in vein, the dust simply makes it too difficult to see, and even flying around in a search pattern does not find them.
Lenneth Barlow |
After a few minutes of fruitless searching, Lenneth has little choice but to break off and look to rejoin the others. She readies to fly for the bottom of the canyon, but then stops and turns her gaze upward instead.
Skyfall...can't leave her alone out here...
The former-witch begins ascending once more, hoping to try and catch up with Flynn's dearest companion.
