The Strange: Realms Beyond Reality (Inactive)

Game Master Darkfire142

Beneath the orbits and atoms of our natural universe lies a network of dark energy. Those who have learned to access and navigate this chaotic sea have discovered an almost endless set of “recursions” in the shoals of our Earth: Worlds with their own laws of reality, reflected from human experience or imagination, given form in the swirling Chaosphere of the Strange. Worlds teeming with life, with discovery, with incredible treasures, and with sudden death.

And slowly but inexorably, it draws the attention of beings from beyond Earth’s shoals—beings of unfathomable power and evil from the unknown reaches of the STRANGE.

I am very much interested in this game, seems I'm a little late to the ball game. I plan on reading over core, but I don't think I'll be able to get something up so soon, and as a complete noob, I don't want you guys waiting on me. But just wanted to thank you for posting this thread and introducing a new game I'd never heard of.

Make a character and join us. It's not like the rest of us are pros at this game.

First time I've ever played it!

Ok, will do, I read through gameplay thread after my original post and GM is very good at explaining rolls and rules. I'll roll the paradox I think it was called, one that originally caught my eye. Give me a day to roll through core book and understand a bit more. Thanks for the warm welcome, only GM currently here on paizo so was looking for a game to play.

Apologies but it seems I'm not able to gain access to the books. I thought my buddy had them, but he doesn't. I'll try to hunt some down, but don't wait for me...Will be hard to do in China.

Scratch the above, got a hold of core and hopefully the first 95 pages are an easy read. Got a IRL session of Agone this evening so I'll try to post something asap. Tomorrow at the latest hopefully.

Dark Archive

Ah good to hear, its been a long wait for a new player

Just finished reading through pc creation, checking others focus now so I can choose mine.

Still working on it, got rushed with meetings in the office today, so haven't finished updating the Alias from my text file. Will try to finish tonight after I get home and the girls to bed.

This is BayouSnowman.

Still unclear on a few rules which means I may not be building the PC right, but hopefully we'll clear it up after its done and I'll tell you what I envision and you tell me if its working.

Do we roll for history? I like the idea of the talking dog, fun game mechanic as Im probably going "The Strange" for my descriptor, assuming thats possible? Also want to "adapt to any environment."

Had some kind of voodoo connection, New Orleans character. Still working on history and how it'll play well in the story and with others.

Dark Archive

You chose your own history rather than roll as you won't know any of the characters before the game. The rolled history or connections is mainly for quick character development for campaigns if you don't want to build your own history.

What you do need is a reason to show up to this auction. You also must start with a Earth related Focus as on Earth only standard physics works. Magic, Mad Science and Psionics can't exist there for extended periods of time (Except as Cyphers or rare Artefacts that can translate). On Earth, magic simply does not work, so your voodoo skills work much like the real world, they have no real reality altering effects. However your "Revisions" break the rules and can do some magic-like effects in any recursion. As I will be shoving you into the slot of our old Paradox, you've recently been quickened and start with 1 experience point as I have forced a GM Intrusion on you to have your powers manifest out of your control in the first round of combat.

As for the GM intrusion mechanic, its basically my way to force events out of your character's control. The advantage is that you get experience every time I do it to you. They do not necessarily do a bad thing to your character although usually can make things more difficult or force you toward a certain kind of action.

A good example is your character might be climbing a cliff and then I suddenly decide he grabs a loose series of rocks that pull free from the cliff face and you start slipping from the ledge and will need to react in some way to avoid a nasty fall. As a player however you can chose to spend XP to oppose my GM intrusions if you have some, canceling my effort to make things difficult for your character. Not everything I do is a GM intrusion though. If something is a planned encounter you don't get XP just for me using my narrative control as the GM. Also rolling a natural 1 I can chose an intrusion without awarding experience (Although I sometimes do anyway as a house rule if you roll a lot of 1's in session as compensation for bad luck and learning from your mistakes).

Profile updated, need to add some history and choose weapons. Will continue working on it tonight after work.

I'm a Strong Paradox that adapts to any environment.

Dark Archive

Adapts to every environment is not a possible starting. The earth symbol means the focus is draggable to other recursions. Adapts to any environment is typically one that Ruk people have.

Anyway here is a list of Focuses you can choose:

Conducts Weird Science
Entertains
Is Licenced to Carry
Leads
Looks for Trouble
Operates Undercover
Solves Mysteries
Works the system
Calculates the incalculable
Collects Bounties
Excels Physically
Interprets the Law
Learns Quickly
Needs no weapon
Negotiates matters of life and death
Serves and protects
Steals
Would Rather be Reading

Oh, my bad, I misread the description and pictures. Ok, I'll fix that then, noticed your list added some not from core strange, where do the others come from? I've got cypher core, but only looked at adept abilities, I'll choose another tonight and update. Sorry for having you repeat yourself, I just thought you were reminding me, not correcting in your previous post.

Pg 54 margin, gives starting equipment for Earth with that focus.

Dark Archive

A few of those are from the In Translation suppliment. That book adds some new Descriptors, Type Powers and Focuses.

Dark Archive

Are you looking for more, or was there just one slot available? Recently picked this up in the Bundle of Holding and I'm intrigued.

Background Info:

Appearance
Siobhan stands out, her hair is so shockingly red, that most assume it dyed. Her irish heritage plays out in her skin that resists tanning to an intense degree. She freckles up in the sun, but early attempts to tan only made her skin red and peeling, so she wears wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves in hot weather.
She stands tall, for a woman, at 6’2”, and her figure is best described as willowy. She dresses sharply, after her teenage years of hating her hair she has grown to embrace it and favours red in her clothing and accessories.

History
Siobhan’s father was a driver for a wealthy businessman in Chicago, at least as far as Siobhan knew.
When his employer died in a random shooting incident, for some reason he was written into a sizable inheritance in his will, Siobhan was still a child when these events occurred and never questioned their jump in status. They moved away soon after, taking up residence in New York, and Siobhan grew up in a life of privilege.
When her father died four years ago Siobhan discovered that most of the money had run out several years ago, and her father was just keeping up appearances, and going into debt, and so Siobhan’s descent into criminal enterprise began. She started small, enough to pay the bills, almost accidentally taking disused jewellery, art and collectables from other people in her circle, nothing that would be noticed but with some value to her. As she started getting money again she “invested” it, spending a little to initiate scams, or buying items from people who didn’t know it’s true value. Still just little things, and so she worked her way up, and now she finds herself at an Auction house, and everything has gone crazy…

Dark Archive

Ok Siobhan, welcome to the group. Well done at making a character. I'll roll you into the initiative and you can act when appropriate.

Welcome
