""Once the meal is done, we shall speak of such matters. For now the servants may return to their usual duties. Farrokh, you may join us at the table, if you have not eaten."

Farrokh nods at the invitation as the other servants have been dismissed, the major domo claps his hands and the servants all nod and bow. When they have left, he does as well and leaves you all to your privacy.

Farrokh pulls out his chair and makes himself as comfortable as possible, even as he attempts to remain as innocuous as possible.

As he listens to the group, when it is appropriate, he interjects.

"I believe that the man known as Samir has left the property shortly after sun-up. I heard this from your man at the door after asking him directly if he might know what has happened to Samir, as I myself was curious as to his absence."

"Samir did not give an account of where he was going or who he had planned on meeting to the servants. They did not press him on such things as - at this time - they had not been under orders to do so."

"I do not know what his plans are, though, or what he is up to. However, I suspect he will return at some point. When he does a message can be left for him, as well as instructions with the servants on how he should be handled?" he prompts, glancing around the table, then shrugs.

If I remember rightly, Osan and his guard stayed the night at the manse since our return from the temple? If so, I'm working on the premise they are still sleeping/resting in their allotted chambers upstairs and cannot hear our current conversation. If they have already left the manse, then Dain GM please advise. Thanks.

That was correct. However, they left shortly before you party arose. A message was left for you, however.

Farrokh glances at the table near to the northern wall and you see a small parchment with a seal upon it.

He stands and brings the parchment to the table and offers it to you.

You can see that the seal upon it is consistent with an important house attached to the very padishah. Based on the man's story, this indicates that his claim was accurate; the seal is not open at this time.

Given that someone in your company would likely ask to have it opened, I'll just assume it was done in your presence and that the document is either read aloud or passed around the table.

The document is in the written regional dialect. It is not encoded, but you believe that is because he doubts it will be read by anyone outside your presence; also, it's fairly vague, and references things only the party would notice.

Dear friends -

Thank you so much for your aid. While the start of meeting was indeed stressful, by the end I am confident that we were able to move past those difficulties and forge a new friendship.

My duty in this place was to observe the master and see to it that his immediate subordinates are not attempting to subvert his authority. The master of the master of this place (and the whom I serve directly) indicates that he feels the immediate subordinates are attempting to stir up trouble. As such, he wishes me to meet with certain folk here and investigate the matter personally.

I am currently en route to do that very thing. However, your services will not be forgotten. An aid will meet with you after sunset to enlarge upon ways to show our appreciation. The aid arrives after sunset for more privacy on all involved.

If you know of any reason that the subordinates of the local master may be moving against him, and who may need to be watched, please be prepared to share this information with my contact. The more details that are gathered the better things shall be in attempting to close this case.

Thank you again for your support; may the gods smile upon you!

You all have the chance to make one post each before what is about to happen, happens.

What happens after your post to the group regarding the letter...

As you all consider the meaning of this letter you are suddenly disturbed by the presence of your major domo who as come into your chambers.

He bows his head politely.

"Your pardon gracious lords and ladies," he says with a courteous voice "there is a messenger from the foreign priest; one Thoth-Apep. He seeks an audience with you, but I told him to wait in the courtyard for your convenience."

He seems a bit nervous, then coughs, clearly a bit uncomfortable with what he is about to say.

"It is your home, of course, and he has no rights here - less so as an aid to a priest to a foreign god. Even so, he seemed to be somewhat... uncomfortable... with having to wait on anyone; as if his position or title alone were enough to guarantee his right to be here..."

"I do not mean to press the matter on this. I do not care if he waits; I merely bring it to your attention so that you know the sort of man he is - that he is used to being obeyed quickly and without question. You are not obligated to obey him, but such arrogance is surely born of some form of power."

"What shall I tell him?"

He thinks briefly.

"If my time ends up being freed up by your assistance, I may attempt to garner a more reliable handle on temple politics in this city. I am disgusted by a certain other scion of the Kingdom and would see his influence curtailed - or ended."

Inclining her head at the compliment, Tairin added to Paten, "There is also the laboratory in the bowels of this manse you had wished to investigate further, if I rightly recollect? Or, have you already done so? And, do you make reference to the High Priest, Thoth-Apep? He would have some influential connection in the city and we must uncover this as well before anything can be done about him. His arrogance must stem from more than his robust self-admiration." Tairin grew quiet in reflection of the Yar-Ammonite priest.

Little retcon and present time ? with Farrokh and the servants.

Tairin scowled upon learning none in the household knew of Samir's whereabouts. "It will not do to have members of this household come and go as they please and without so much as a word to their destination or time of return. From this point on, we should all endeavour to relay such information to one another in case of threat or need." Looking directly at Farrokh, Tairin added, "I will return later this morning to work in the library. Once Samir appears, I wish him to be sent to me immediately, and, if he does not return by sundown, then I must learn of this, too, and then we shall have to go in search of him. Thank you, Farrokh."

At mention of the parchment left by Osan, Tairin gestured for Farrokh to bring it to her and she broke the seal and glanced over its contents before reading it aloud to the others around the table. "Osan makes no mention of the name of this aide, however, we will meet with him upon sunset, if you are all in agreement and are available? I will make myself available, in any case. Farrokh, please advise the servants that we shall have company this evening and to prepare a light, yet fine repast. At the gate, please let S’bu know to give entrance to Osan bey's aide after sunset. Thank you."

"What shall I tell him?"

How strange that we mention Thoth-Apep's name and his man appears at our door...

Tairin lifted her hand as if to calm the head servant. "It is alright, Kara Ben. This aide, did he give his name? Was it Makalani by chance? If so, Lord Patenemheb and I know this man from the "Old Town". If it some other, I would know his name and then you may escort him into the main sitting room, please. We shall meet with him, there, for he would not care to be met by us in the courtyard." Tairin nodded, giving the major domo leave to return to the waiting and impatient aide.

Looking around her companions, Tairin simply added, "It is wise we see what the aide and his master the high priest wish of us. I have an ill feeling. Let us see what this is about."

Wiping her mouth with the linen cloth by her plate and gently standing from her chair, Tairin collected Sabra from her pillow on the table and began to move from the dining room into the main sitting room to await their unexpected guest. She settled herself on the plush sofa, laying the kitten on the pillow to her right, leaving room for others to share the seat with her, if they decided to join her.

Meeting with priests and all this talk of politics does not seem to help me in my goals...but then I should never miss the possibility of making a connection that could be useful for later information or assistance. I should be glad that I decided to wear finery this morning instead of my leathers.

Nodding silently, Yasala follows Tairin to the sitting room, where she checks her clothing to ensure she is presentable. She places herself quietly to the left of Tairin where an acquaintance of slightly lesser status might stand, leaving the seat on the sofa for Paten if he should choose to join.

Talar nods, still steadying his heart rate from hearing about his sister. "Yes...yes we should all be there. Bjoern come, we should be at the side of the others as they negotiate." He leads the big man into the room.

The company moves into the courtyard and they observes a stern and somewhat annoyed, officious looking man.

He looked at the group before you.

"I come from his Excellency, Thoth-Apep. He has met with some of your company before and wishes to meet with them again."

"You are advised to make his acquaintance. He wishes to meet with you and I am to escort you," he adds with an officious tone.

He intends to take someone in your party to meet with the priest; he does not know who. If none of you will go with him, you can send an NPC if none of you wish to go, but he at least wants someone to go with him before he leaves.

If you have any questions for him before you go, feel free to ask as the answers may effect your decision. Also, remember - you can go off on your own to do your own work, but I advise picking a place you'd like to start your search, for whatever you're searching for...

For the rp to make sense and flow better from our original rp set up, I'm playing it that the aide was brought into the sitting room to meet with us (not us going out to the courtyard).

Thoth-Apep's aide wrote:

"I come from his Excellency, Thoth-Apep. He has met with some of your company before and wishes to meet with them again."

"You are advised to make his acquaintance. He wishes to meet with you and I am to escort you," he adds with an officious tone.

Still mildly uncomfortable seated as she was and awaiting the aide, Tairin positioned herself more comfortably and placed a cordial lady of the manor smile upon her face as the aide was brought into the room to speak with them.

"Greetings. I am Lady Tairin. I, and my kinsman, Lord Patenemheb, are newly acquainted with High Priest Thoth-Apep. You have not given your name and I wish to know with whom I am speaking with, if you would be so kind. Also, what is the reason for this urgency? Cannot this meeting wait until later in the day, for my people and I have urgent matters to attend to in the city this day. I understand your master's esteemed position and I mean no disrespect. Your visit to our home is most unexpected is all." Tairin's voice remained steady and collected for they were in their home and had the position of power on this ground. Her smile was cordial enough - as a lady of the manor meeting with an aide lower in station than herself.

Diplomacy to engage the stern, annoying man and keep him somewhat appeased: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24
Sense Motive on the man - trying to get a sense of the man - his mood, temperament or trustworthiness: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Tairin paused and waited for the aide to introduce himself for it was rude to presume he could come into their place of residence and make demands and expect them to jump like some trained pets.

As she waited for the aide to tell her/them his name, Tairin caught Yasala's gaze and then listened to the whispered proposals made by both Talar and Yasala.

Touching the copper bracelet at her wrist and very discreetly pointing a finger in the direction of each of her companions in the sitting room, Tairin lifted her hand to her mouth as if to cough and quietly uttered in Yar-Ammonite, //"Risaela."//

Stealth to cast Message/gesture without drawing notice from aide: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34
Bluff to give impression she is stifling a cough: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22

Nodding her head toward Sabra, the growing kitten seemed to intimately understand and hopped off her cushion to wind around the feet of the aide to distract him from noticing her mistress and companions. The kitten tumbled playfully by his feet to continue to draw more of his immediate attention.

Sabra's acrobatics to distract: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

//"You can all discreetly hear me. I will go meet with Thoth-Apep. Bjoern has no armour, so one of the other fighters can accompany me; such as Yasala. If you all mean to go, so be it."//

(The spell lasts an hour, has a range of 160ft and requires a Perception check DC 25 for someone outside of the party to hear the whispered messages.)

Tairin lowered her hand from her face/mouth for now and smiled; pretending to gesture Sabra away from the aide's legs so he could speak and answer her/them without the antics of the kitten to bother him. Sabra moved slightly away and sat down a few feet from the aide; swishing her thick, ebony tail back and forth on the expensive floor rug; watching with glittering emerald eyes and purring softly.

As the others speak, Patenemheb watches the man, and listens.

Perception to see any oddities about his person, such as scars or concealed weapons: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

Sense Motive to assess the state of the man: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18

Knowledge Local to work out if he has heard of this man or someone fitting his position or role: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

Knowledge Nobility on any customs that this man is violating or stretching the letter of, that could be useful leverage: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

For now, Patenemheb awaits the man's response to Tairin's queries.

Through Tairin's magic, he speaks to her:

"Tairin, are you certain you wish to commit to going with this man now? Thoth-Apep may get the idea that he can order us on his whim. We should at least draw what information we can from him before making a decision."

If the man does give his name:

"Well met. As my kinswoman asked, we would know what matter is so urgent that compels Thoth-Apep to send a messenger here to draw us to him this day?"

Diplomacy to aid Tairin: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

If the man refuses to give his name:

"You come here, nameless messenger, ignore your better's questions, and expect us to follow? That is *most* inappropriate. I demand immediate apology for myself and my kinswoman - and explanation for your rudeness."

Diplomacy to press him via etiquette: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

Talar's only words are spoken quietly to Tairin; he does not offer anything to the stranger, trusting Tairin and Paten's words far more than his own. But he does assess the stranger, as well as act as a watchful bodyguard.

Sense Motive vs newcomer: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Perception to notice anything noteworthy on him, such as weapons: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Perception to watch the area for anything while we're distracted talking: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

Taking a small silken kerchief from the pocket of her skirt, Tairin lifted it to her lips as if to stem another cough and slightly turned her head, and, replied in whisper through her spell, so all of her companions could hear her reply but not the aide,

"//I commit to nothing at present, Paten. I do wish to know more before we proceed. I merely suggested I go, if the time comes. I concur to gaining some answers."//

Lowering the kerchief to her lap and twining her fingers, Tairin returned her steady gaze upon the aide; awaiting his reply.

The man seems a bit by your comment about his name.

"I am Hoteth; a messenger for his Excellency," he says, and his accent is thick with the Yar-Ammonite dialect.

"As for the reason of the urgency? I can not speak on the motives of my master; but he is said to be powerful with the ways of Divination and his connections with the city are manifold. Something has prompted him to ask for an audience with him, and at once. As to specifics?" he shrugs.

"I obey his will, I do not question it," he says, trying to behave more politely.

Patenemheb Sitayet wrote:

The man turns a glance to Paten.

"Again, noble lord, I am not privy to the desires of his Excellency. He says a thing and then I obey. What more is there than that?" he adds, a bit confused at the questioning.

You see no hidden weapons on him, though he does have a long dagger at his hip that is worn obviously. He seems fairly well dressed; his linens are clean and there are no obvious rips or tears on them. You believe he is likely a mid-level house servant or slave. As to the reason you're being summoned? You doubt he knows, or that someone like Thoth-Apep would even consider it worth his time to share that information with this man. To a Yar-Ammonite noble or priest, there would be no reason to share that information with someone like this servant. It's not meant as personal, you don't think, just basically that he was told to get you, and that was it.

You don't see anything suspicious or odd around or about the man. As for your Sense Motive? You think the guy came in here with a chip on his shoulder - ready to order you around. Now, after hearing Tairin and Paten speak, you get the idea that he's suddenly reconsidering his initial bluster. After all, while his master is powerful, it's POSSIBLE that you guys are more powerful - or, perhaps worse - that you're good friends with his master and because he's unwittingly offended you, you may tell his master, which could get him in trouble... So now he has no idea how to act, because he's not sure of you, so he's backpeddling desperately to get himself out of a potential jam...

He looks at you all.

"Who among you wishes to come; and when will my master expect you?" he adds.

So far we have Tairin - this is a chance for anyone else to offer to come. Those who don't want to, it's cool; I have something else in mind for you, but that will happen after I get your final answer.

EDIT: You are convinced that the man does not know what is going on RE the spell. In fact, you think he's intentionally doing what he can to ignore anything odd so he doesn't seem too pushy via the fact that he's not sure of your formal level of power and status. After all; you DO occupy the house of a former sorcerer known of great power in the city - you must have SOME sort of resources...

With the many voices of those in the room weaving around her head, Tairin directed her attention first to the Yar-Ammonite aide,

"Hoteth," she let the name linger in the air for a moment to still the general impatience of the aide and also lend a greater edge of authority that he should be mindful of.

Then looking to each of the companions in the room to assure them she had heard their respective voices, Tairin continued speaking with the aide,

"There will be five attending the meeting. Lord Patenemheb and I, the esteemed envoy, Yasala of the Jul-Juggans, and two personal bodyguards, Bjoern and Farrokh. And, of course, my Sabra. We will be pleased to meet with the honourable high priest in two hours time; giving us opportunity to take care of some personal matters before the long ride to the Old Town. We thank you for delivering the message."

Tairin then rose steadily, taking care of her general motion, and gestured for the major domo to enter the room, "Kara Ben, escort our guest to the gates and then gather the servants in the dining hall for further instruction." She gave a purposeful nod and then turning her gaze and smile on the aide, she added upon his impending departure, "I bid you good ride, Hoteth. We will see your master at noontide."

Once the aide was escorted out of the manse and gates, Tairin then turned to her companions, especially as Bjoern returned ready to leap into action, "First, Bear, you and I will go to the marketplace to fit you with new armour. The Temple District is more than it seems and there are known and unknown dangers; just as we have seen with the Moon Temple, there."

Then proceeding to all the party, "Farrokh is intimate with the social niceties and undercurrents of the city, so it is best we bring him along as Paten's man. We will continue to assert that Yasala is a newly-arrived envoy of Zimballah. It will aid her in her task. Paten and I have made inquiries there pertaining to female slaves who fit the description of Talar's sister. However, we did not learn anything of importance. We will keep our ears and eyes open in Thoth-Apep's house and district. The priest man is cunning, well-connected and has a keen skill with wordplay. Let us not provoke him at the moment. We do need more answers. I would like to learn what he has seen in his divinations, if there were such. Be mindful of the heady incense in the house for it can cloud one's mind and perhaps loosen lips. If you find your mind wandering, find an open space and take some air. The ride to Old Town is around an hour long. I will aid Bear in his purchases and then we will meet and begin our ride to the Temple District."

And remembering something, she added, "Thoth-Apep believes that Paten and I are noble, distant kinsman. I would see he continues to believe the tale of our familial connection. And, be mindful of what you say aloud, for there are ears all over the place; readily waiting to share our words with their master. Let us be more clever than this priest."

Looking over at Talar, "If you mean to go make inquiries into your sister's whereabouts, please be mindful and watch to see if you are being followed. Try not to provoke any person or put yourself in a dangerous situation, for you have no ready ally by your side. If you cross paths with Samir, let him know he must return the manse as soon as he is able and inform him of what has transpired and where we have gone. Once we return from the meeting, Yasala will be free to assist you in your undertaking, Talar, as well as any other. I mean to go see the Yadarian, Darius Turan, later this day. I wish you well in your search, Talar."

"I will advise the servants not to grant any visitor entrance into the manse and to await our return. If Samir returns here, without crossing paths with us, then Ben Kara can inform him of our whereabouts. I wish I knew where Samir's gone off to. This taking off without word will not do."

"Do any of you have any further questions before we start the day?" she asked her companions.

====

Tairin's plans for the day: Go to the market now with Bjoern and purchase his new armour. Then refresh herself, meet Paten, Yasala and Farrokh and all five of us will head out to the Temple District (I recollect it was an hour's ride, however I may be wrong? It's at least 30 mins ride from memory...) Meet Thoth-Apep and hear what he has to say. Then return to town later in the day and go see Darius Turan at the small Yadaran temple in the city. If Tairin needs to meet with Priestess Jelah, she will do that after speaking with Darius and then will meet back at the manse to debrief and discuss the events of the day with the party.

Just some rolls to start the ball rolling with Tairin, Sabra and Bjoern buying armour. Not sure if the GM wants to rp the detail/conversation? Please let me know, Dain GM.

Tairin's Perception to see if we're being followed to the marketplace: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22 (+2 to Tairin's check from Sabra's assist, for a total of 24.)
Sabra's Perception, to aid her mistress, to see if we're being followed to the marketplace: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
Stealth to move about the city without drawing unwanted notice: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25
Diplomacy with seller re new armour purchase, +2 for perfumes to make favourable impression: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 14 + 2 = 24
Sense Motive re dealings with seller - to determine if we're being ripped off or it's a fair deal: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14

Hoteth looks at Talar in confusion, his eyes flicking to Paten and Tairin.

Sense Motive DC 14 or Knowledge Local DC 10:

Talar is clearly from Khazistan; this guy is clearly from Yar-Ammon.

Tairin and Paten are from Yar-Ammon and have declared both their power and rank; Talar is clearly garbed as a warrior - that is; not a noble/priest/magi.

Despite the fact that the Khazistani people are the predominate race in this city, given the huge advances in civilization over the last several centuries in Yar-Ammon, most Yar-Ammonites feel a sense of superiority over other races. In short, he's surprised that Talar is telling the noblewoman and the priest/magi (he doesn't know what Paten is, but he suspects either a priest/magi - though, to be fair, in Yar-Ammonite culture a priest or a magic user is almost a de facto noble) things rather than asking them.

It's nothing overt or even spoken; he just seems more confused is all, but he's certainly not complaining, just confused :)

As an envoy from the south, I enjoy meeting with members of other cultures to broaden my knowledge of these northern lands. Additionally, you never know if men and women of local influence might be able to offer their assistance or perhaps be able to utilize mine." Gazing over at the messenger she continues "You can tell your master that Yasala, envoy of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah, will be accompanying the Lady, but I cannot answer as to when. The timing of our visit will depend on her desire." Taking the room in with a relaxed and almost aloof manner, she glances quickly at Tairin to prompt her to continue.

Hoteth pauses to study Yasala thoughtfully, a curious look on his face.

"As you will, lady," he says with a small bow.

Knowledge Nobility 12 or Local or Geography 15:

The man is courteous to Yasala, but not as much to her as Paten and Tairin. This is likely because A) Yasala did not declare herself a formal "Noble Born" but merely an "envoy" and B) he is more predisposed to support people from Yar-Ammon as opposed to other cultures. In short; your Bluff worked, but he's still going to show more support to people of his own Culture - but that's not a personal thing. The more foreign a person is from his homeland, the less likely he is to support them.

Tairin of the Veils wrote:

We thank you for delivering the message."

Hoteth bows graciously before Tairin.

Knowledge Nobility 12 or Knowledge Local/Geography 12 and if you made this check for the other spoiler you don't need to reroll:

Slaves bow to all Freedmen, typically, when accepting orders. This bow, however, is more formal and one given to people of rank/power, such as yourselves. In short, you believe that the Diplomacy Checks made earlier have convinced this man that you are, indeed, quality people and he is now acting accordingly.

Kara Ben nods at Tairin.

"By your leave, lady," and takes the man outside.

The company then prepares to make their plans for the day, even as Bjeorn returns from the chambers above.

Bjoern Ghostbear wrote:
"I am ready to go!"

Even as Bjeorn returns there seems to be some noise at the door to your chambers.

Looking up you see Samir is pushing past Kara Ben with an almost impatient gesture. It seems that Kara Ben wished to formally announce Samir's entrance while Samir didn't feel he needed to be announced and just felt like entering.

Seeing the group at the table he strides in with a purpose and flings himself into a chair.

"Greetings," he says, and then pause a moment to take a gulp of whatever is in the nearest cup by him and then wipes his mouth with the back of his hand and lets out a loud gasp of relief, as if he was doing a bit of work that left him thirsty.

"I apologize for my absence, but I wanted to gather a bit of information this morning," he says, then takes some of the bread on the table and dips it into the bowl of honey and cream and munches a bit lustily on it, as if - in addition to being thirsty - he's quite hungry.

After he consumes the bread he takes another drink, wipes his mouth again, folds his arms on the table and leans forward to speak.

It should be noted for those that forgot that in the past several days Samir's gear has changed. He now has what looks like (to those seasoned warriors) a MW Steel Scimitar and dagger. Even those who are not familiar with the MW quality of the weapons can observe their is gold on the hilt of sword and the dagger has a silver handle and sheath. His clothing, while a bit dusty, is now fine linen; and he seems to be wearing what appears to be MW quality Armor - (Studded Leather, in fact). Wherever he's been and whatever he's been doing, he certainly has found better gear than what he had in the past several days.

"First things first; our friends at Abu Khafi... it seems that there was chatter that one of his regulars had been killed by the captain of the guard and he died valiantly defeating her - others say that she and her southern mercenary ambushed the captain of the guard... there is already an uproar over the incident because - it seems - the captain of the guard was somehow related to the leader of this city."

"I believe this is a strange thing. The killing was only last night, and done in a quarter of the city that is not frequented by many well-to-do sorts and, generally, avoided. It was discovered rather quickly. That it was reported quickly is no surprise; whoever reported this thing likely did so to gain some sort of reward from the local authorities as the dead guard captain was well-connected."

"I do not know, but I would guess that either the sound of the fight drew the attention of locals and they came to investigate the leavings to collect what the dead had for their own purposes. Or," and here he looks a bit nervous "or... someone was following the woman from Abu Khafi and noticed it right away."

"If anyone during that fight was followed is it possible that everyone in that fight may have been followed... be cautious, the streets are full of eyes," he adds glancing around the table.

He then leans back and takes another sip of his drink.

"Now, I should add; all of us are aware of the fight a few days ago, including the amount of animals that were left behind?"

He shakes his head and tugs on his beard with a bit of nervous frustration.

"It seems a man has entered the city with quite a bit of war-trained camels and some horses and has sold them. I do not know who the man was; I only know that he had an unusual bow and kept his features hidden or masked."

"I asked the vendors and they told me that he did not wish to reveal his identity and they did not press him on the matter, considering the amount of animals he was selling they did not want to upset a good business opportunity... Indeed, one of them told me that the man selling the animals was a fool who did not even haggle on the price... This may mean he is not a native, for no true native son would accept the first offer - but it may also mean that he was trying to offload them quickly so he could convert them to ready coin before folk started asking questions."

He shakes his head.

"I only bring this up as it makes me nervous. Mysterious masked men are of no consequence to me generally; but the description of his bow... we have seen a masked man carrying a bow like this in the past, but that was as far back as Susrah... that is a long way, and it may only be coincidence, but given all we have endured as of late I am not confident in mere coincidence."

"If he is the same man that would mean he has followed us since Susrah. Further, if he is the practice of following us then that means he may have followed us to the tombs, though perhaps he may not have... in any case, someone would have been close enough to the bodies to collect the animals quickly and sell them so quickly after we left... again; it may just be a coincidence that this happened, but I would guess that whoever was there just in time to find those beasts certainly was not wandering the desert by supposedly haunted tombs just after we left by good fortune."

He leans back in the chair and studies you all.

"Did I miss anything of note?" he asks your company.

Feel free to bring Samir up to speed on this. Also, it seems that he is at least familiar, or becoming so, with the less reputable parts of town. If this is correct then if the party splits he may be able to help Talar if he is going to look for his sister directly?

Tairin; when you go shopping for Bjeorn you do not believe anyone is following you at this time. As for being ripped off; you detect nothing more than the standard haggling nuance - the vendor offers 20% more than the value, you insist on 20% less, and this goes back and forth for some time until you reach the actual "book price" (though you can RP it out to try to beat their haggle price and possibly get it for cheaper; though a lower roll will result in buying it for a higher price. Let me know if you'd like to haggle any purchase or simply settle on the RP nuance of getting the eventual book price at this time).

Regarding armor for sale in this city - the town has for sale the following Armor in normal and MW type: Padded; Quilted; Reinforced Tunic; Leather; Hide Shirt; Parade; Studded Leather; Chain Shirt. All can be found in MW condition if you pay for them.

Under Medium Armor it has Armored Coat; Chain Coat; Hide; Scale Mail; Breastplate; Breastplate Agile; Chainmail - all of them can be found in MW/steel.

Heavy Armor includes Banded Mail; Half Plate - both can be found in MW (you don't think they use much heavy armor here because of the desert heat).

Shields include Buckler; Shield Light Steel and Shield LIght Wooden (they do not seem to have heavy shields as it's a place that values cavalry).

It should be noted that this place does not have much in the way of "Eastern Armor" as it's much further west. However, if Bjeorn brings a reliable Smith the remains of his armor it is possible the man can attempt to duplicate/craft a new set for him. This, however, will take time - possibly weeks, maybe longer (depending on the craftsmen's rolls; but certainly much faster than standard book Crafting Rolls as he IS a professional). As it is custom it will cost roughly 30% more than the standard price (though that can be negotiated if you go this route).

Bjeorn; if you want the Smith to craft you the armor, that will require another Diplomacy Check to find a reliable Smith and (if you want) another one to haggle to get the price down. Tairin - given your earlier checks, I will allow you to roll those rolls now, if you'd like - but this assumes Bjeorn will want a custom-made suit of armor. In either case, he'll likely want something now to outfit himself with.

Samir glances around the table.

It's clear you're ready to go and do what you planned on, but this bit of information may make you consider how you proceed or any last orders (including where you'd like Samir to go, or any other follow-up questions you may have for him) before you leave.

After the messenger leaves, Yasala takes some time to think about his reactions to the group. Although it is good that the man seems to believe that I am to be respected at least, it seems that he is more familiar with and predisposed towards members of his own culture. It can probably be assumed that this priest will be of a similar attitude although probably more familiar with other cultures less apt to respect those of differing backgrounds and faith. I should prepare tools to try and keep him off his game as much as possible.

When Samir enters, she takes note of all that he passes to them but quickly prepares to excuse herself. "There are many things in your news that might be of import to our upcoming actions, but unfortunately I have very little time to prepare for an imminent meeting. I would like to revisit these things in more detail when we return." As she gathers herself and prepares to head towards her chamber she looks back at the others. "While I ready myself, would someone else be so kind as to catch him up on what he might have missed? Tairin, I need about an hour alone if I am to make the most out of our upcoming audience with the priest; I shall meet you in the market after your shopping if that is acceptable"

Not meaning to confuse any NPCs about who has power, which is why I specified that Talar's plan was a suggestion more than anything, but if we're constantly being pushed by the GM to make a decision I would want to give something rather than just standing there and going "Well Tairin would need to make that call".

Talar would want to go since Yasala will no longer be with him, but Tairin has already spoken and he bites his tongue. Oh well. I would likely do nothing anyways, keeping my mouth shut to stay out of trouble.

After Hoteth leaves, Talar listens intently as Tairin recounts their investigations into his sister, nodding and saying nothing. Another dead end? Sister...where are you?

At Tairin's cautions about speaking unwisely, Talar sneers. "I will likely just keep my tongue to myself, it has gotten us in enough trouble as is."

Samir barges in and Talar's hand twitches before he sees who it is. His eyes flick to the new equipment. Lucrative work, I'm glad he's putting it into his fighting equipment. Talar sneers at the news from Abu Khafi. Complicated b#@~%@#!. I hate getting involved in this.

The news of the hooded man selling steeds was of more interest. The rest that we abandoned? If he was following us, either a desperate or a greedy move to draw attention like that. "Somebody following you since Susrah? This was before my time with you, do I need to know about this?" He asks the others.

However the presence of Samir does give Talar hope to be productive today. "Samir...what plans do you have for the rest of the day? The others have a...more important meeting to get to, but I could use your help in digging up more leads on my sister."

Between us, there is an abundance of skill tracking and finding shadows in the dark, yet we have not sighted him in a while. This man either has the grace and cunning of a cat, is a true master of disguises and can blend in a crowd or can cast spells to hide his form. Yasala has not heard of him, as yet. Neither has Talar. We first crossed paths with this mystery bowman when we stopped to replenish our water during the journey through Kharjah Pass on our way to Susrah. He did not speak with us; simply watched from the shadows of the camp fire. We have seen signs of him; not directly, but we conceived he could be in the vicinity. If he has followed us for some time now, as Samir has conjectured, and has not attempted to kill us, then this man has another agenda. It would be good to know who he is and what he means to do. If we could only gain firm information on the man with the great bow."

Hearing Yasala speak, Tairin looked across to her before continuing with Samir. "Once we are done in the market, I wish to return to the manse and freshen up - perhaps dress a little finer as Thoth-Apep is a man who values obvious grandeur and nobility. Paten and I must dress as high nobles of Yar-Ammon if this man is to treat us accordingly, so I applaud you for wishing to dress for your role as envoy. I will inform Samir of what we will be doing this day and I will see you in an hour."

Turning back to Samir, "We had an unexpected guest this morn - Hoteth, messenger of the Yar-Ammonite High Priest Thoth-Apep of the Temple District. He has divined something or another and wishes to speak with us urgently. I told his aide that a few of us would visit Old Town at noontide. Talar wished to undertake his own private inquiries, so myself, Paten, Yasala and Farrokh will be meeting with Thoth-Apep. Firstly, I must see that Bjoern has new armour or an order is made with the local smithy. Then we meet up with the others and ride to the Old Town. This afternoon, I wish to meet with Darius Turan in the small Yadaran temple in the city."

Tairin nodded. "That sounds like a fine idea. Best to travel in a pair if there is some kind of trouble brewing in the city due to the deaths of Sabiha, Sadi and their people. We can all meet back at the manse later this afternoon."

Calling out to Farrokh, "Please hire a carriage for us - Paten, Yasala, myself and Sabra will travel in it to Thoth-Apep's house as fits our noble and esteemed positions. You and Bjoern can drive and guard us, as always."

Tairin then left word for S'bu and Kara Ben not to permit any person onto the manse grounds or into the house in their absence. She told her servants not to inform any person of their true whereabouts, if asked by the visitor, to simply say the masters are out procuring certain goods for the house. Tairin also advised the servants keep keen watch for anyone observing the property or attempting to find a way inside. She also gave word to Kara Ben and the house maid that they would return to the manse late in the day.

She then collected her coin pouch and placed her weapons upon her person, tucked Sabra into a shawl pouch around her neck/across her body and bid her companions farewell as Tairin made her way to the market with Bjoern.

"We should be back within the hour. Ready yourselves. We have a long day ahead of us."

Okay. Tairin has made her rolls and Bjoern has clarified that he wishes custom-made armour and so I leave that up to him and Dain GM to work out. Tairin has played her part in trying to gain good prices for her bodyguard. I am uncertain how long this shopping trip will take; however Tairin will return within the hour to the manse, as promised, to fresh up and leave with the small party for Thoth-Apep's home. Dain GM, what do you need from us now? Can we move onto the meeting, and, if so, do you need us to toss up all the relevant rolls or wait until we meet the high priest face to face?

When Samir's talk turned to the deaths of Sabiha, Captain Sadi and the others, Tairin gritted her teeth a little and gave a simple nod. "I am certain we all understand the need for caution and vigilance, especially at present."

He nods his head.

”To be fair, I am not certain where the threat may come from. Not only guards, or friends of guards, who may seek vengeance on a fallen captain, but also there may be allies of the street trash that was slain in the tombs who could also seek vengeance – never mind the chance that some folk might simply to find out what is going on to sell information…” he says, then shrugs, realizing this is all understood already.

Tairin of the Veils wrote:

Samir nods his head.

”I can help Talar if he wishes. As for this priest? When you search for armor for Bjeorn asking a few questions about his nature, if you do not know already, might not hurt… but that is just a suggestion.”

Tairin of the Veils wrote:
Calling out to Farrokh, "Please hire a carriage for us - Paten, Yasala, myself and Sabra will travel in it to Thoth-Apep's house as fits our noble and esteemed positions. You and Bjoern can drive and guard us, as always."

”With respect, noble born, there are no carriages for use inside the city limits. However, I can certainly hire you a litter so that slaves may carry you instead?” he asks.

Not a big deal, just an RP thing; the streets are windy and there are many stairs and twists. It won’t effect much to use a carriage vs. a litter; but I mention it only to remind everyone the streets are not easy to navigate,

Tairin of the Veils wrote:
Dain GM, what do you need from us now? Can we move onto the meeting, and, if so, do you need us to toss up all the relevant rolls or wait until we meet the high priest face to face?

You can move directly to the meeting if you’d like. However, while writing this, it occurred to me that it may be that you’d like to have some follow-up information on the priest. If you have any specific questions you’d like to ask while shopping then feel free to toss them up and a Diplomacy check. You’ll automatically get answers, but the higher the roll, the more trustworthy and detailed the answer. You don’t need to ask anything, of course, but any questions that occurred to you personally to ask; this is the time to do so, if you’d like.

Patenemheb Sitayet wrote:
"Samir, I am glad to see you intact. Though I have little to add to the other's comments."

”Many thanks, my friend,” he says cordially and pops a date into his mouth and nods.

At this time Farrokh will hire out litters to carry you around. Further, Samir will make a suggestion to Talar at this time after the others have left…

Suggestion to Talar:

”You have tried many conventional methods to find your sister. Do you have anything that might belong to her personally? A ring, token – perhaps a lock of hair?” he asks after the others have left.

”It is somewhat unconventional, and perhaps even dangerous in certain ways, but it is written – When your sword breaks, draw your dagger… – well and good!”

”You cannot find your sister by asking men simple questions. Have you considered not asking men? Perhaps you may find an Oracle or a Diviner who can use sorcerery to discover her presence?”

He says no more on this unusual option, instead, he waits to see what Talar will say before offering follow-up suggestions.

Talar frowns at Samir's idea: not because it is unreasonable, but because it may be considering the situation. "If it comes to it, I have clothes stained with her blood." He doesn't seem interested in going into detail.

"I have one other plan before resorting to such risky measures. I've considered...searching for my sister in the guise of a rich outsider looking for pleasure." The entire idea rolls off his tongue like poison. "Somebody who is an outsider so their origin is hard to question, of enough wealth to be influential but not so wealthy to attract undue attention. He will originally be unsure of what he wants, but over time will narrow it down to experiencing a local, and we will be more and more specific until we are all but asking for my sister." He offers a pause for Samir's thoughts. "Of course...I am certainly not capable in such a farce...we may have to find someone who can help us."

As the group make their preparations to depart, Patenemheb motions that he wishes to speak..

"Tairin, I will relate our prior dealings with Darius Turan so that you are armed with all that we know of him."

"The Khazistani temples are newer than those of the Kingdom and situated close to the palace of the Bey. The two primary gods in the area are Yadar and Nhakhramat. The crowd of Jairanian guards led by the local noble Hassan Sadi clustered around the Yadar shrine drew our attention. I say shrine, as it seemed more a place for worshippers to congregate rather than a particularly holy site in itself. "

"In any case, Darius Turan emerged after Sadi, flanked by youthful acolytes armed with daggers. Darius was quite irate. He believed us to be mercenaries in service to Yar-Ammonites, sent by Thoth-Apep to further harass the Yadarites. He was quite insistent that his people had nothing to do with the defacement of a temple, erecting of a Yadar statue, or killing of Yar-Ammonites. Talar, Yasala, and myself managed to calm Darius down enough that he invited us in. The compound was a modest place, as was the equipment of Darius and his acolytes. No wealthy temple, perhaps due to the rising popularity of Belit-lil."

"I knew that we were growing shorter on time before the meeting with Sabiha and had potentially valuable information before us from a person likely to wish alliance once they knew the situation. Thus, once speaking, I took a fearsome gamble. I spoke to Darius of Sabiha, her potential role as an assassin or thief, and her Ikunan associate. I referred to a possible plot among the nobility against the Bey, and her potential involvement. Darius was understandably stunned that someone would be that forward with a stranger. But as I had calculated, he was receptive."

"A month ago he and his temple were approached by a servant of the sorcerer Zheng-Ya. This servant claimed to bring word from his master's ally - Thoth-Apep, previously unknown to Darius. Apparently, certain Yar-Ammonites were incensed by the discovery of a statue of Yadarite origin in one of their ruined temples. Darius replied that his temple lacked resources, time, or inclination for such activities and that he knew of none personally who did. Perhaps other Yadarites would but he knew them not. Since then, Darius and his congregation has suffered threats and harassment from the Yar-Ammonite quarter. Darius said the Bey's vizier was a contact and had warned him of the general leaving his cousin in charge of the investigation. A corrupt fool, and we know what end *he* came to."

"This guard captain had enraged Darius with talk of Yadarites assaulted in the streets, accused of having coordinate an assault upon a Ya-Ammonite temple, killing the daughter of a minor noble in the bargain."

"Darius knew not Sabiha but asked his acoyltes to aid. One, Basir, spoke of seeing her in the marketplace with a disguised man of breeding."

"Another note on Darius. He is far more amenable to exchanging favours with friends, then acquisition in a mercenary manner."

I'm a little confused; I was told that the Guard Captain that you guys have now killed, the relation of the Bey, was named Hassan Sadi. Is he both a nobleman and the corrupt fool Guard Captain enraging Darius?

Yes, they are one and the same. Hence Paten's admittedly oblique reference to "A corrupt fool, and we know what end *he* came to."

Thanks for clarifying, Paten. :)

Tairin listened as Paten disclosed his and the others' interaction with Darius Turan.

"We do not know much about Zheng-Ya, although this manse and its contents speak of dark magic and mysteries. If Thoth-Apep is a close associate of his, we must tread carefully to discover the Yar-Ammonite's agenda now Zheng-Ya is gone. It appears Thoth-Apep and Hassan Sadi were allies of a kind or else the Guard Captain would not have harassed and accused Darius and the Yadarans. I do not particularly like exchanging favours in this city; yet I understand such politics and will speak to him with this in mind as I am no mercenary. I will quietly ask about Darius in the marketplace, as Samir has suggested, to determine the general feeling toward the priest in this city. I would like to go into my meeting with Darius Turan with as much information as I can. Thank you, Paten."

A little retcon in the marketplace before going to meet Thoth-Apep...

Diplomacy to gather info on Darius Turan: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 14 + 2 = 23

Some questions in particular... She'll ask in a cordial, casual way as if she wishes to know more about the priest/faiths in the city being she is new to Zul-Bazzir.

What is your general impression of the Yadaran priest, Darius Turan? Is he a man of his word or someone who does not care for the plight of the people of this city?

Is Darius Turan a man of some import in the city? Who does he consider his friends and which people or groups do not like him?

How long has he been living and instructing the Yadaran faithful in Zul-Bazzir? Are his followers peaceful or more inclined to arouse trouble in the city?

Also, and generally, Tairin wants to get an impression of his personality, general habits, customs, dealings with others, his integrity, likability, power status and honesty... That will help her in how she approaches and speaks with Darius. Thanks! Okay, that's all I'm going to post from my phone to conserve battery until my power is back on later this afternoon. Then I can post more, if needs be.

I haven't heard back from Dain GM re any information in the marketplace that Tairin may have learned about Darius Turan via her Diplo roll. I'll post this next part with the Thoth-Apep meeting in the meantime.

Having freshened up and having adorned herself appropriately, Tairin sat in the litter; Sabra nestled inside the silken scarf/pouch around her body and her companions in their positions. Each jostle in the litter made her want to grit her teeth as the streets of Zul-Bazzir were indeed narrow and windy and her body was not happy with the jarring movements. She did not complain; instead she lounged as a woman of power and wealth would do as she moved about a great city within a litter. Occasionally, she glanced beyond the curtain to the alleys/streets see if anyone was following them.

Perception to note anyone following them: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16

When they had reached the house of Thoth-Apep, Tairin gestured Farrokh forward, "Please announce the arrival of the Lady Tairin, Lord Patenemheb, esteemed envoy - Yasala of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah and their guard to the servants of the House of Thoth-Apep." Tairin remained in the litter with the others; casting a quick glance at Bjoern waiting by the litter, until Farrokh had knocked and advised the head servant of their arrival and intention to meet with their master. They had arrived on time and she was glad for it. She smiled at her companions as if to say, Let the games begin.

After the usual official welcome and admittance was made, Tairin gracefully alighted from the litter; nestling Sabra's form inside the scarf and entered through the familiar door of Thoth-Apep. Following any servant's direction to the place the Yar-Ammonite priest was waiting, Tairin placed a small, cordial smile on her face and walked with steady steps until she stood before Thoth-Apep.

Tairin inclined her head in due reverence; yet the arched gesture was not too low/pronounced for she considered her rank and station to be above that of the priest waiting before her; being closely related to the Queen of the Old Kingdom, as she was.

"Greetings, Hem-Netjer-Tepi Thoth-Apep. It is good to meet you once again. My sincere apologies for not visiting earlier in the day - as you can most certainly understand, there is much work to attend to when running a great household. I, and my companions, are grateful for your patience and gracious invitation. You are familiar with my kinsman, Lord Patenemheb, and these are our personal guards. This fine patron is Yasala, an emissary of the Jul-Juggans of Zimballah and our guest in the city. She expressed a sincere desire to make your acquaintance. I hope you do not mind." Tairin gestured elegantly toward Yasala and then waited until she was given leave to sit by the master of the house. As she waited, she added courteously, "Your messenger, Hoteth, said you had matters of great import to discuss with us. We would be glad for your counsel."

Yasala remains quiet but cordial, following Tairin in to meet with Thoth-Apep and staying next to her but slightly behind to allow the noblewoman to make the introductions. When her name is mentioned, she lowers her head and makes a gesture across her chest; a formal Azimbanan greeting.

Patenemheb maintains his usual stoic expression and steady gaze, though he carefully and slowly casts it about as the litter is moved through the streets, seeking shadows indicating threats that would remain unseen.

Upon exiting the litter, Patenemheb steps forward embellished with his polished jewellery and noble finery.

Whatever image of a hermit scholar he may give off usually, here there is no mistaking the very image of a man born to the highest ranks of Kingdom society.

As he enters, he gives Thoth-Apep a glance, denoting his understanding of status: that Thoth-Apep may have power and influence but the scions of the Kingdom before that priest stand before and above him.

Patenemheb does however take some small enjoyment from once again seeing proper architecture and aesthetics.

He takes more enjoyment from Tairin's demonstration of courtly etiquette, and the reassuring presence of Yasala and Bjoern.

I will have to outdo this priest's building efforts, on principle.

"Greetings once again, Thoth-Apep. I am curious to hear what words that you have for us, that are of such import."

Answers to Tairins Questions:

What is your general impression of the Yadaran priest, Darius Turan? Is he a man of his word or someone who does not care for the plight of the people of this city?

Darius is not very well known, but those who do know admit he is both very intelligent in lore, and very honorable. He is not native, but a foreigner. Some say he was a soldier before he pledged his life/honor to become a priest. Despite this, he is certainly a pacifist, at least discouraging any of his people to practice combat. Those who know him say that he is a generally a good man – for a priest – and is typically considered to be doubted by many as his adherence to dogma and religious practices seem more out of a commitment to ritual and tradition, rather than any specific belief in higher powers. All agree he is extremely intelligent, however.

Is Darius Turan a man of some import in the city? Who does he consider his friends and which people or groups do not like him?

Darius is not very important, per se. His temple is small, he has few followers and very little wealth. However, it is known that, on occasion, visitors from the bey have visited him privately, some believing that they seek him as he has knowledge and wisdom and is generally prepared to share knowledge.

He is often distrusted, but the matter is somewhat ironic. He does not typically sell information; rather, he shares it as he seems to feel part of his duty as a priest is to be an educator. This makes many suspicious, because the amount of knowledge he has could be sold for profit – the fact that he doesn’t sell his knowledge makes people wonder what his true motives are.

Many wealthy and noble people look down on him, but the rumor is that because he is not someone who does things for money, they are suspicious. If you cannot buy his loyalty, how can you control him? However, even those who consider his attitude somewhat strange admit they have never known him to break an oath.

In short, you’d gamble this guy is likely a LN or possibly LG; further, you suspect that he MAY be a Scholar LV 8/ Fighter: Lore Warden LV 4, but you are not sure – it is possible he may be something else versed in combat, that last part is complicated as he does not fight. A better role would have given a clearer answer on his levels and possibly stats, but that may be learned after meeting him yourself.

How long has he been living and instructing the Yadaran faithful in Zul-Bazzir? Are his followers peaceful or more inclined to arouse trouble in the city?

He has been in the city for roughly five years. His followers are typically peaceful, but that is complicated. With the recent complications against the Yadaran church, his followers feel threatened and angry – younger members agitate for outright action and violence against people who give them problems. However, Darius always tells them to abstain from violence.

Some say this is his honor talking – to teach his members to turn the other cheek. Others say it is merely good political savvy; his church is small and could easily be overwhelmed and destroyed by any number of enemies. If he wants his church to prosper and his followers to remain safe it is wiser not to give an enemy a reason to attack you. Some suggest it is a combination of those two reasons and others postulate wild theories in which it is neither – that he is some sort of madman, or he is controlled by a demon; these theories are ridiculous and the sort of thing suspicious fools in a market would say. They do not seem likely, merely give credence that the common man is uncertain how to deal with his attitude and personality.

Hopefully the above information answer this last question. You trust his honesty; but he does what he can to maintain the integrity of his church/temple – ironically you are not certain if it is because he is a devout follower of his deity, or committed to honoring the dogma of the church for an unknown reason – either way, you believe him to be extremely intelligent, honorable, non-violent, a survivalist but with little actual power in terms of coin or military status.

The servant, seeing the procession, quickly turns and bows. However, you are also conscious that there is a small company of four armed men outside the temple proper. These men were the livery of the priest, and carry long, curved daggers at their hips and hold short spears at their side. You can tell that their weapons are well made and well-tended and you do not believe they are merely for show.

Thoth-Apep is at once an extremely charming individual, who is also one that is – somehow – very off-putting, though you cannot be sure how, or why, specifically. The man seems to radiate a natural sense of charm, however; and whether he is using that charm to inspire you, intimidate you, or simply speak to you – whether you are swayed by him or not, you are at least aware of the very power of his presence.

While his power in the past was large, this is somehow greater than before, and a bit more unsettling.

Upon seeing you he inclines his head a casual, albeit polite way, certainly not as one would treat an equal.

”I am, of course, delighted to make the acquaintance of your friends,” he says, intentionally speaking to Paten, even while his eyes rest thoughtfully on Tairin.

This move makes you think he is somehow treating Paten with greater reverence as Paten is male and Tairin female – however, it also is a subtle thrust to negate some of Tairin’s “face” by making her seem less important, despite her titles.

”Before we begin business, I insist on refreshment. You and your companions look positively famished,” he says with a polite voice.

Yeah; that’s kind of a sham. He’s basically implying that the trip to his house has you worn out; you can’t handle the modest journey through the streets, your gear/goods are so poor that you clearly need his help. Offering food and drink is absolutely good manners to guests, but the WAY he does it makes you think he’s offering scraps of food to starving street urchins. Again, nothing he says is obvious or rude – but it IS certainly spoken in such a way that makes you feel as if he’s either mocking you, or – more disquieting – baiting you. Of course, if you DID respond to baiting, in his own home in front of witnesses, that could be a problem for you…

Response to Checks –

Diplomacy to make favourable impression and demonstrate impeccable social manners: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 14 + 2 = 32

Clearly impressed by your manners; you suspect that how he is treating you (albeit somewhat irreverently) is because – if you rolled lower, he’d be treating you with more obvious contempt. In this case you suspect his contempt is far more subtle – in short; nothing you can call him out for, he’s not being openly insulting – you can simply feel an undercurrent to his tone and attitude.

Perception to notice anything of note re Thoth-Apep's appearance or facial expressions: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32
Sense Motive to gauge his mood, motive or to listen for any untruth/artifice in his words etc: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

Hopefully the above description answers these questions

Stealth to observe Thoth-Apep discreetly and without drawing attention to herself: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25

You did well; but you suspect that is because he is not giving you enough attention. In short; you believe he does not respect you very much as a threat, so he’s not really spending much time to study you properly.

Servants are discrete but extremely well-armed and armored. Odd for servants to be so well protected. Those who serve drinks/refreshment do so almost with the movements that suggest they may be in some sort of trance, you are not sure, but they act far too emotionless for your taste – even for slaves.

Sense Motive to detect any discrepancies in his speech and gauge his intent: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

This guy is very shady indeed. You don’t trust him at all; but he IS very polite and generally very courteous. You’d think LE at first, but somehow you’re not sure – the “Lawful” part COULD be a ruse, but if so, it’s very well done.

Patenemheb Sitayet wrote:
"Greetings once again, Thoth-Apep. I am curious to hear what words that you have for us, that are of such import."

Thoth-Apep could turn his gaze on Paten directly. However, though he answers him, he turns an almost casual, wandering eye to study Yasala, almost in a curious way – but under the curiosity you can sense a perverse lecherous gleam, coupled with a cold, somewhat off-putting smile.

”I am ever so glad you came as my guests. I am disappointed it took you so long to respond, but, no doubt, you will be able to move with greater speed through the city when your status and condition improve?” he says, with an almost conciliatory tone, but there’s no mistaking the sly undercurrent to it.

”In any case, as you are guests in my house, I should say that I am delighted to have you here. But there is business to attend to. Specifically, I heard your company was seen near to one of our holy sites in the desert was. And that – regrettably – some various people of import in the city, including my own humble servants, were found slaughtered,” he says with a look of sorrow and pain at the loss of the lives of the important guests and his servants. But you feel his sadness is just a bit too melodramatic; he’s not truly upset, merely expressing the polite actions of a man who is upset.

”The bey will likely hear of this tragedy, if his men have not already reported it. Yet my sources indicate that there was simply so much blood and carnage there… well, certainly you are not capable of performing such destruction,” he says – Tairin, Yasala and Paten; your Sense Motive and Perception Checks combined reveal this quick observation which you may want to share with your friends while in private.

Observation:

He downplayed your talent; he claimed you guys couldn’t have killed all the people at the dig and is suggesting it must have been something or someone else – but for a very brief moment he looked at your face, studying you – watching your reaction. You think he’s masking it well, but though he’s marginalizing your talent to make himself seem more powerful, you suddenly realize that he himself doesn’t know if you did the killings or just came up at the last moment. He’s not sure and he’s trying to read your reaction to gauge if you did it based on what you say, what you don’t say, and how you say/don’t say things.

”I am certain that the authorities will come to me soon for my own report. After all, my own people were slain – and the loss of property as well – but I wished to meet with you first, as you were eye-witnesses to the killing, and so gain your opinions and observations. In this way I can allay the concerns of the authorities when they question me,” he says with a sly smile, a cordial nod of his head and then leans back and waits to hear what you will say.

He is looking for answers, but be careful how you phrase them as the GM will remember. He said you were “Eye-witnesses” to the killing. Were you? Did you really see it? He’s looking for information, true – but he has no problem in implicating you in things depending on how you answer him.

Diplomacy to position Patenemheb's status appropiately in Thoth-Apep's perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

Your combined observation for being followed indicates that there was a collection of street children following you. One would follow you for a few blocks, then slip into an alley. Yet as soon as that child disappeared another would appear from the same alleyway and continue to follow you for a few blocks. This pattern continued for some time until you reached your destination. Given the twists and turns you took, the frightening thing is that – unless the children knew your destination in advance – this system of swapping observers suggests that they would have to have many children spread out through the city in many alleys and corners, ready to receive and intercept different people to track you. This suggests a very hard to identify spy network, but – even more disturbing – one that is extremely large, given how well they were spread out.

In short, he’s waiting for you to give your report on what happened at the dig sight. Outwardly he claims he wants this information so he can provide an accurate report to the authorities; you suspect that is a veiled threat, he wants this information more for his own ends then giving a damn about who was killed. Finally, if you answer him indelicately, he could use your answers against you. Remember, too, as guests in his house he’s not going to do anything overt to hurt/harm you – but he is likely also baiting you to do something that could cause problems for you.

There were many guards, maybe too many, but then, the group had been in the city for some time and there had been a few deaths.
While the others were more concerned about the charade that was unfolding, he was more interested in the defense of the priests.

With an inward smile Bjoern was just too happy he was just the thug of the group and could keep his silence.

Low roll, so it's difficult to gauge exactly. You are not sure, but you'd wager that the guards you're dealing with are likely Level 4 Fighters of some type - which Archetype you are not sure; nor are you sure on their stats. You could take them, likely, but the fact that the man has so many of them - and so well trained - signifies he has power and wealth. Besides, you don't know how many more there in the area that you haven't seen yet. Oh; the weapon and armor they are geared with seems like MW quality to your eyes...

Tairin turned her eyes downcast as if distressed by the news of such killing; shaking her head in disbelief. She then looked to the high priest, her eyes gentle and steady, "I wish we could have known that such scoundrels had ventured onto the holy lands in your charge and perpetrated these atrocities. Your sense of loss is great and it saddens my heart. In hearing about the bloodshed and carnage at this present time, I am sickened by what has transpired and on such sacred ground. That very night, we went searching for two of our people who had gone missing without word. They were not within the city proper and so we enlarged our search for we had feared something terrible had befallen them. Fortunately, they were discovered, having wildly ridden off to cool their heads. I scolded them for their recklessness. This is why we may have been seen near the holy site in question; although I cannot know for certain for it was dark even with the moonlight. We, however, did not witness the killings in question or the perpetrators, for our minds were otherwise occupied with fear for our people. Let me reassure you that we would not undertake such blatant and abhorrent behaviour to a noble person we hold in great esteem in this city we have made our home. Perhaps these killings occurred after we had reunited with our missing friends and returned to the city. I wish we could have seen something of import to help in the official inquiry. The perpetrators must not go unpunished. We will, of course, aid you in making discreet inquiries, if this is helpful? However, we do not wish to interfere in the official investigation conducted by the Bey's men. So, I will follow your counsel in this matter."

To the party present at this meeting: The two companions Tairin is referring to are Samir and Talar. It isn't a far stretch as Talar had ridden off earlier in anger re his sister and Samir is consistently going off on his own, so Tairin is playing that storyline/angle at this time.

Talar Drealev wrote:

Talar; for this I'll need both a Disguise Roll and a Diplomacy Check to gather information. Instead of Disguise (or to augment it) you can roll Bluff, too. The higher roll will be chosen, the lower roll (if it beats a 10) will grant a +2 Circumstance Bonus. Samir doesn't know the city that well, but he will happily function as your bodyguard for such proceedings. In this case he will not need a formal Disguise, as his "role" will simply be that of a mercenary/sell-sword in your service.

Toss up the Disguise/Bluff Check (if you want to purchase gear to improve your Disguise chances, you're free to do so at this time; expensive/wealthy clothing will improve your check by a +1 Circumstance bonus, but it will cost roughly 1/3 price of a MW sword). Once you do that, toss up Diplomacy Checks - each check will equal 4 hour. It should be noted that the DC will be very high, but each check stacks via circumstance bonus. So, for example, if you search for 8 hours and get a 12 and a 17, your total would actually be a 19 as the first hour beats a 10 and grants a +2 to the second hour.

You should be able to do 2 checks today; 3 if you're willing to push yourself (the last one you'll be able to do, but you'll be "Fatigued" and you may want to let your friends know why you were absent so long).

Okay; toss up those checks and let me know what's up. Sorry for not posting this sooner, I've had a very complicated week so far and it was tricky to remember everything.

Dain GM, to clarify, Talar does not think he has the skills to do this himself. He is not good at disguise and he is very bad at lying, so he wants to find somebody else that he can hire or otherwise convince to play the part. I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to bring in our new player as well, since he is skilled in both of these things.

New player is a fighter type - I had something in mind to bring him in; however, his intro was likely going to take a while. So; here's what's up - you can meet him at Abu Khafi's - you and Samir know it, relatively, it's a good place to meet shady people. You'll meet your new boy there; he's a Northman, sticks out like a sore thumb - toss out a Diplomacy Check (it will either Aid or Samir's Check will Aid yours) to rustle up a person willing to aid you as your go-between. During your questioning of potential trouble I'll have the new guy overhear the conversation. Whatever his background is, I'll also have him touched by your story (or the promise of coin) enough to tag along. So Out-of-Game if you bump into a new Northman while looking for aid, it's him.

Samir's Check to find your new guy to aid in finding sister (either you'll Aid him or vice versa, depending on your roll) -
1d20 + 6 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 3 + 3 = 14

As you look, you notice a strange Northman overhearing your inquiry that moves to your table...

That's the new guy's queue - good luck!

EDIT: Samir rolled badly - your move; remember, this is just to find a new Aid in finding your sister so as long as you get at least a 10 your Aid nets a 16 - not bad, but not great, but we'll work from there. The new guy will join you automatically, hopefully, but please RP it out.

Sense Motive -
1d20 + 12 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 12 + 3 + 5 = 23

Opposed Sense Motive Check on him:

The guy is very suspicious of Tairin. The fact that he can't read her has him nervous. His suspicion is that likely that she's more powerful than he assumed. This is not so unlikely - she's been in town less than a week and has already taken over the house of a powerful sorcerer. And now the reports in the desert? He didn't believe she was that important; but now, he's certainly not sure.

His suspicion in her power could be used by those cunning enough to use it. Good luck!

Actually the new player is a slayer, which is much more skill-heavy than a fighter is, and I already checked his sheet: he adds more than 10 to both bluff and disguise.

Talar knows they're going into a shadier part of town, so he keeps his true intentions vague. He's looking for somebody who can essentially take on an acting roll, disguising themselves and lying in exchange for a very generous amount of coin. Talar also makes it clear that this is contingent on the success of his mission (and for anybody with an eye for blood he also mentions he doesn't have the coin on him right now), mostly focusing on getting narrowed down who is capable of helping him before attempting to talk to them and be a little more honest about his motives.

And an odd northman this is.

The priests of Yadar are already an odd lot, keeping to themselves and denying the pleasure of orating to the masses at temple. So to see the piercing blue eyes of the North to look at you from under the cowl of a priest's hood, his medallion of Yadar staring at you in judgment, is noteworthy.

disguise, take 10: 10 + 13 = 23

"Ah, my son, I have heard your pleas and I now answer. Great Yadar, a thousand blessings upon him, does not teach us to dwell on the past. If someone has shuffled off this mortal coil, you must move on, and prepare they own soul for the own judgment."

bluff, take 10: 10 + 13 = 23

That you did not ask for a priest, and that he is not helpful, seems of no concern. He just talks, twirling an odd metallic stick distractingly between his fingers.

Before over-staying his welcome he gets up to leave, but clumsily drops his stick.

He goes down to get it, bending low, very low, almost in supplication, his white cloak spilling about his form.

After 6 seconds he stands again...but it is not the same man.

Gone is northern, now his skin is finely bronzed like a native. Gone is the priest, now rich jewelry and fine brocades hug his form like fawning courtesans. This native noble throws back his handsome cloak and laughs gaily.

"Of course I will help you, my friend! Such a wrong can not go un-rectified. We will be as avenging angels bringing darkness to the light. But you know, this may require a great deal of money."

He drinks deeply from a leathern jack before him and keeps smiling at you, as if you are sharing a private joke.

Incredibly amused, Yasala watches the duel of words between these northern folk, but she keeps her face still and shows no emotion, with one exception. When Thoth-Apep glances at her, she smiles demurely and glances at the floor before "regaining her composure" and continuing to quietly watch.

After the others are done speaking, she steps forward. "My Lord, I also sympathize with you for the loss of your men. Azimba is a violent place and I am well used to losing men, and whether they be servants or companions it is still something I do not wish on anyone." Continuing to keep the calm tone of a diplomat, she continues "I am here in your fair city looking for information, and it seems that what I seek may tie in with your current concerns. There is an organization of criminals in Azimba that works outside of the auspices of the ruling priesthood. Of late, they have been spreading their influence far from our borders, and envoys have been sent far and wide to look for signs of their activity so that they can be brought home to be given to Jul-Juggah as penance. I am here to see if their sins have reached this far north. I would not normally ask for a boon upon our first meeting but what I have heard of the slaughter in the desert sounds like it could be their work. Perhaps if you had knowledge of Azimbanan groups in the area you could be kind enough to direct me where I could investigate, and if it was the traitors of my kinsmen in the desert last night I would of course bring that information back to you."

Talar is completely taken aback by the suddenly extroverted man approaching him. He stares suspiciously, and notices something is off about his speech. This is all bluster. Just an excuse to get close. The hair on the back of his neck raises and he grips his dagger underneath the table in preparation for some kind of attack...

But then the man reveals his true appearance and has Talar even more confused. Talar simply stares at him for a few moments, letting the brief pause stretch into an uncomfortably long silence. But the wheels in his mind start moving again. Wait, somebody who can throw disguises like that, somebody this extroverted, and somebody who can lie like this? It may be just the man he needs.

After the awkward silence Talar stands, seeming excited but containing his emotions. "Ah, please, sit sit!" He gestures the man to come to their table, then stops on a dime and lowers his voice. "Actually, do you mind conversing elsewhere? The privacy of this situation is critical to its success. And money can be negotiated, I promise this will be worth your time." He looks on hopefully, indicating the door so they can find somewhere more private to converse.

Mal does his level best to ensure his words do not betray his thoughts. 'Oh, my friend, you and yours are in greater danger than you know. With luck we might pull this thread, and so bring down the Black Tower and all their thralls. So I must needs play the mercenary, for coin buys loyalty, but also takes trust to be given, and if we are to find your sister, I need you to trust me. Although, I suppose, a little more coin in the purse never did hurt.'

Mal stands and laughs, motioning for Talar to lead. "I am called Mal. Steelcutter. By what are you called?"

He still smiles. The promise of coin and a red, roaring adventure awaits!

"Talar, and this is Samir." He will continue moving, aiming to find a back alley they can tuck into where it will be very difficult to observe or eavesdrop on them without being in plain sight. "Mal, we are looking for somebody who can play a part and deceive others to help rescue somebody. A girl who was captured and sold as a slave. We need somebody to take the part of a wealthy but not overly important foreigner who is traveling through the area and is looking to 'sample' the local girls. Hopefully that can attract some attention, and we will have you be extraordinarily picky and be more and more specific until you are all but basically asking to find this particular person. In this way we can locate the girl and rescue her." He says this all quickly, as if nervous the idea might turn to smoke if he doesn't get it all out. "You will be compensated, of course.
