"Wh-what are these? They're p-powerful...t-too powerful for me to f-figure out."
Kikinnin looks to Juraan, hoping the man can shed some light on their nature, though he does regard them a little while, given the symbol emblazoned upon them.
When JJ dons the new belt, Kikinnin raises a hand to the young man, receiving the floating stone, before tossing up above his head. When the black beard learns of the benefits of the bouncy boots, he also takes a moment to slip them on, as well.
He follows along, giving wide berth to those in the Watchers who have keener, much keener, eyes. As secret door after secret door gives way to their pursuits, Kikinnin debates when he'll ask his Far to join them again, knowing the battle down here is far from over.
Given his ability to rise in the air with a couple of footfalls, Kikinnin takes a moment to look over the large table, expecting to find some kind of writings left behind in some basic giant language.
Once clear, he moves to the next secret door, and pushes through, giving Pocca a call to arms. Standard Action- Divine Bond for +2 Holy) 15 minutes

"These are the rings of the Cagewrights. The rings of the thirteen I am going to call them" says Juraan after careful examination of the ring "They will protect against those of good heart and from any kind of divination and extreme weather"
A good character gains a negative level while wearing it.
Kikinnin hovers over the table. A fast glance does not reveal any new information besides the Cagewrights have decided to begin the ritual before they were fully prepared as they feared Kravichak Riolgh's selfish movement put you on track of the cabal. Reading the papers you also discover the Faery Sanctum is only a special complex built for the ritual and only half of the Cagewrights are currently here. The other half are at their base, a place called Shatterhorn. The writings do not offer any indication of where that place might be or how might be found.
While JJ is frustrated by the searching in the rock, Marigold comes over and easily tilts a piece that activates the secret door, perhaps helped by her enhanced true seeing. The wall starts to grumble.
As the door starts to open Kikinnin calls the attention of his father's spirit, who manifests shining for the dwarf one more time.

As the rock section pivots over itself giving you passage, Kythel brings further protections on the party, boosting Maxim's resistance, protecting Juraan from compulsion and slightly boosting JJ's deflection ring.
Beyond, there is a large cave with a massive metallic tree in the center.
C27. TREE OF SHACKLED SOULS
This massive elliptical chamber glows with a hellish light from lava bubbling through shaped channels that form a familiar pattern in the floor. These rivers of lava form the sign of the Carcerian Eye, and from the eye's "pupil" grows a horrendous sight.
A large tree of metal erupts from the lava there. Thirteen branches sprout from a central trunk several feet across, twisting menacingly around the chamber to increase the diameter of the area occupied by the tree to nearly sixty feet. The branches are covered in wicked barbs, but each branch tapers to end in a hook. From each hook hangs a cage, and within each cage you see the slumped form of a humanoid figure. These must be the Shackleborn, the individuals cursed by fate to be the keys to unlocking the gate to Carceri.
You immediately recognize a few of the thirteen, fallen within the soulcages: Terrem, Zenith Splintershield and Keygan Ghelve.
Awaiting you below the tree is Dyr'ryd, the imposingly massive demodand leader of the Cagewrights. Contrary to normal demodands a second, loathsome face and a small, stunted arm and leg protrudes from the side of his head. This second face resembles Dyr'ryd's, but is not identical.
Turning towards his attention towards you he says in loud voice "Why have you come?" while raising in a defensive stance an awfully looking guisarm.
The cancerous face speaks up looking up "Why Dyr? Just offer them to join or kill them of course!"
You do recognize Dyr'ryd as a shator demodand (evil, extraplanar outsider). Shators are at the top of the demodand society and take all the decisions about Carceri prisoners, often using their abilities to follow fugitive ones into other planes.
Shattors can spit a paralyzing slime, resist non good-alined weapons, are immune to poison, acid, fire and cold, to mind-affecting attacks, have scent and see invisibility.
They have a strong resistance to magic and Combat Reflexes.
They know a few magical tricks.
Yet, this does not seem a typical shator demodand at all.

GM Rutseg |

JJ's keen study of the Abyss denizens reminds him of an entry about shator demodands, the cuspid of the demodand society.
"He is not answering you Dyr! You do impose no respect! Kill one of them, then they will listen!" voices the tuberculous head.
"Servitude to the demodands is inevitable, the new order will benefit the creatures of good in this plane" answers more calmly the main head "And now, you answer why did you came so we can sort out in which part of that order you need be classified"

A shattor...but there's something different about him. More powerful, maybe? And what's JJ even doing? Dyr isn't going to tell us anything and Kikinnin won't stand for having words with such a monster. Unless...is he trying to get Dyr to drop his guard, somehow?
She knows it'll all end in violence, one way or the other, but Marigold holds her tongue and watches...and waits.

GM Rutseg |

Dyr'ryd smirks while JJ smartly passes information to the whole party "Are you menacing me mortal? When you die and your spirit burns in the Abyss I will still be here, ruling your home plane in the name of the Lord of Madness!"
The Cagewrights' leader grimaces when Kythel talks about Shatterhorn "What do you think you can do? The ritual is on going. You have just no plan, you came here in desperation. Too late. Destroying the tree will set off a chain reaction that will destroy the mountain. So what do you choose, be ruled by the jailers of Carceri or dying while destroying all your lovely land?" the demodand's tumor face laughs manically while the first face asks you.

_JJ Surabar |

"I think" says JJ, stepping forward again.
"That you are the one playing for time. You perhaps should return to your own prison. And I think lord of madness is the right name for someone who rules, where the inmates run the prison."
He shakes his head. "You hardly present a any argument for agreeing to work for you, and not strong enough case yet for making me want to have you work for me. You are running out of time to make your case."
And another 5' step forward

GM Rutseg |

"You are very cocky for such a small body" the demodand moves his guisarme with skill "But ok, if you join us, I will let you torture the prisoners and see their suffering faces. You will be able to let them know why they should have not committed their crimes..."
"If you are good, you might even rule over some of your mortal kind on this final and perfect order that will emerge"
The vestigial head nods and cheers up "Yes! Everything is so corrupted, only total destruction can help a reconstruction under a new and perfect order!"

_JJ Surabar |

Continuing to step forward slowly JJ thinks.
"Torturing mortals isn't really my cup of tea." he says finally.
"I mean, anyone can do that. It really doesn't take much skill. I mean, maybe I could assign that role to you. But I think my skills... they need something more. A better challenge so to speak. Surely you have something more interesting than that. And rulership. Why, that is nothing but work, work work."
He shakes his head.
"You'll need to offer me much more than that or maybe I'll just add your heads to my collection."
As he continues his stately advance, the youth continues.
"The thing is Dyr, you are wondering... can I really be what I seem? A human? And a young one at that? And if so.. how did I defeat your minions? And why am I here?"
He smiles.
"Does your friend have a name Dyr? It kindly told me yours, won't you share its in turn?"
5' step

GM Rutseg |

"Oh well, its is just for convenience and safety, closer to the source of energy and if everything explodes or is sucked by a dimensional failure in the portal, well, our home is not harmed at all" Dyr explains to Kythel "We were not very sure the ritual was going to go properly you know... and we had no time to test the quality of these Shatterborns, there is also the detail..."
The other head protests in a rather acute and strident voice "I am Ryd of course! You should address me as Excellence Ryd!" the head looks up to the main head "I am fed up of this one Dyr!" then it looks back at the party "I offer 10000 golds to anyone that kills the bag of bones and gives me his remains in small pieces of three per three inches"

Kikinnin hears the stone in the young man's words, bleeding the strengths and weaknesses of the Bloat, before pronouncing it soon-to-be-dead.

Round 2 BoF: +2
Shaking off the demand's magicks Maxim moves to the shoulder of Juraan (15ft Move Action), then levels his arcane gun toward the fell monster. Through a squinted eye he calls forth on one of his most destructive spells;
"Disintegreren!" (Gnomish: Disintegrate!)
(Standard Action - cast Disintegrate)
The barrel of his arcane gun glows green and fires a thin ray of green arcane energy toward Dyr'ryd!

GM Rutseg |

Of a sudden, Kythel becomes a giant form made of pure water that fills the entrance of the cavern.
I do not think Kythel's enemy is in range of a channel, but let me know
Juraan follows Kythel's example and starts to get larger while his wings extend and powerful jaws are born from his mouth. All of a sudden your companion is a large black dragon!
Fort DC 22: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Actually... is that a nat 20? Disintegrate critical?: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 16 + 2 = 30

Maxim gun booms and the green ray becomes larger in size as it approaches its target, hitting where Juraan's one failed, a large chunk of the demodand's body is reduced to dust!
The deformed creature still manages to keep moving with the bits that remain. The cancerous head screeches scared "What do you have those legs for?! Move! That dwarf has mostly destroyed us!!!"
Dyr's head is so contorted in pain, that it does not manage a response. Almost instinctively keeps fighting, stepping forward to reach Marigold with his guisarme 20' reach.
Mindbite+BS: 1d20 + 28 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 28 + 2 = 422d6 + 13 ⇒ (5, 6) + 13 = 24
Mindbite+BS: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 23 + 2 = 422d6 + 13 ⇒ (5, 1) + 13 = 19
Mindbite+BS: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 18 + 2 = 332d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 6) + 13 = 22
The guisarme cuts first in her leg, then her chest and finally cuts her in the front leaving nasty wounds everywhere.
But directing his bite at Kikinnin.
Mindbite+BS: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 23 + 2 = 382d6 + 5 ⇒ (1, 5) + 5 = 11
This hits unless Kikinnin chose the +2 for this round BoF bonus
If hits, Fort DC 23 vs paralysis (3d6 rounds)
Concentration DC 17: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
The vestigial head focuses to cast a spell, but is overtaken by the pressure from Kikinnin and JJ and fails.
"That dwarf is dangerous Sir" the voice of the guisarme reverberates while it casts feeblemind on Maxim "Let me shut it down before it gets more dangerous"
Will DC 17 for Maxim and he has a -4 penalty on the roll

"Marigold!" cries out JJ.
"That dwarf is nothing like as dangerous as an irritated brother!" he shouts back, going ape at the creature.
A couple of his blows miss due to the distortion field, but blow after blow hammers home.

Will withdraw the Channel for Round 1, a bit too far, that's what I get for not checking the map first, will post Round 2 later.

GM Rutseg |

With a couple devastating swings, JJ demonstrates his Abyss hunting skills and sends what remains from Dyr'ryd to the ground.
With the death of their leader, the Cagewrights have been beheaded.
Combat is over!
Mindbite, the intelligent weapon is a +4 defending guissarme
Gauntlet of extend spell (works like a rod of extend spell, and I imagine it for some reason like Thanos gauntlet)
medallion of thoughts
ring of evasion
ring of the Thirteen
A quick inspection of the tree cages shows all of the Shakleborn have died to fuel the Ritual of Planar Junction.

Fortitude Save v DC 23: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (5) + 24 = 29
Kikinnin's eyes enlarge as Maxim's gun practically blows a hole in the bloated demodand. He's taken aback so much, he fails to recognize that there's a little extra work to be done in slaying it. When JJ howls his own anger, the black beard is already turning away from the fight, shooting the blond beard a hearty thrust of an Axe head in the air. "That was divine might, if I've ever seen it. All you need to do is donate generously to St. Cuthbert, and you're practically His deacon. Deacon Maxim. That has a ring to it."
Kikinnin waits for the others to gain themselves, before turning to JJ.
"You should probably pull the Collar out, and let's see what it does to that Tree." The black beard speaks these last words as he walks up to set eyes on Zenith Splintershieldslag for what he hopes is the very last time in his life.

Maxim chuckles and looks at the green vapours gently floating from the barrel of his arcane gun;
"Been keepin' that one up my sleeve for a time now. Was worried when the Professor there pulled the same rabbit out an' it didn't take..."
At Kikinnin's words he hacks a laugh;
'Har! Deacon... Bror... reckon my time o' gettin' religion has been a gone in a forge fire. I'll stick to makin' collections in the name o' entrepreneurial spirt!"
He moves to collect the loot, pausing at one of the rings recovered;
"That's the third o' these rings." (referencing the Ring of Thirteen)

Marigold Montajay |

"Oh n-no...p-poor Terrem...and K-Keygan..." Marigold moans when it becomes apparent that they've come too late for the captured Shackleborn. She looks desperately to Kythel. "Is there a-anything we can d-do for them? P-Please..."
She seems unconcerned with her own injures.

Kythel of Nisroch |

Kythel frowns and inspects the bodies of Terrem and Keygan as Marigold asks her question, "Here it is doubtful but back home, perhaps.
Is there a possibility that by neutralizing the tree they may return to life? Their spirits... returned as it were?"
The Cleric's voice is slightly distorted by his watery body!
How long have they been expired? Heal Take 10 = 14
Anyone object to Kythel taking the Gauntlets? This would allow him to Extend 4-6 levels spells, a nice upgrade!

Maxim Snaphånce |

Have at it Kythel :) - already updated Loot sheet with your claim!

_JJ Surabar |

JJ glances around, shocked at seeing his little brother dead. For a moment he waivers, but the last few weeks and months have hardened him a little. His mouth dry JJ approaches the wicked "tree" collar in hand.
"Time to shackle this tree and send it back to the abyss it seems to keen to be close to" he mutters as the lad secures the collar firmly around it.

GM Rutseg |

Kythel inspects the bodies. It is difficult to tell, but probably one day or two. Looking at the chain of events, they died most probably at the moment the ritual of Planar Junction started.
JJ picks the collar the group got from Moltenwing, but just at that moment the doors to the north of the rock chamber open side to side.
A tall and gaunt man emerges accompanied by another shator demodand, this one not [too much] deformed. The bald man wears nondescript dark robes that cover him from his neck to his feet, with long, voluminous sleeves that conceal even his hands. In the middle of his forehead he has embedded a dark, diamond-shaped crystal. From his neck hangs a dark iron amulet in the shape of the Carcerian Eye.
"I told you the noise was combat Shebeleth" says the demodand, by his tone you can infer the creature despises the man for an inferior.
Shebeleth looks down towards Dyr'ryd's body, then stares up to you "You are the Watchers" his words have no taint of doubt "What do you think you have achieved?"
"Adimarchus return is inevitable"
The light of the lava pulses as it keeps its flow creating an end of the world atmosphere in the chamber.

_JJ Surabar |

JJ snaps the collar around the tree.
"Nothing is inevitable." he says. Even as he speaks his eyes linger on the dead form of Terem. No, this wasn't a moment for levity about death, or even taxes.
Cold eyes fix the two new arrivals. "And even if his return were inevitable, if I can delay it for a thousand years, that will be enough for me. Let him rot in Carceri where he belongs." JJ all but snarls.

Marigold Montajay |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"D-death is the only th-thing that's inevitable..." Marigold murmurs as she slowly turns to face these new arrivals. Though her eyes are slightly red, she seems to have regained her composure. She gives the tall man and the demodand a cold, unflinching stare.
"And with each C-Cagewright d-death, that's one l-less ally Adimarchus h-has to rely on...one less g-grunt for his army..."

Maxim Snaphånce |

Maxim grimaces, then adds to Marigolds comment;
"Taxes too. That much we learned as Cauldronites."
He taps the butt of his pistol with a practiced finger;
"Alright Baldy. Say when..."

Kikinnin Rouradont |

I defer to our wise GM as to where Zenith's cage is on the Tree, as this is where Kikinnin begins this next interlude...
"Adimarchus's return is inevitable."
"If you think so, is it your fate to die defending that black hope of yours? You've already murdered several of ours. We'd as soon close your eyes permanently, and rob you of ever seeing your Adimarchus come to this world."
Kikinnin feels the glow beneath his gloves, and knows Pocca is still here long enough to see another battle finished. The black beard readies for more adversity.

GM Rutseg |

JJ warps the collar around the closest branch.
"No!" shouts Shebeleth alarmed.
The collar starts to dissipate the energy of the ritual, and as the energy starts to flow into the collar instead of the ritual, the Tree of Shackled Souls suddenly starts shinning with blinding light!

Kikinnin's eyes take in the splendor of the Tree, Shackled, and suffers nothing of the blinding strength when the Dispersal Collar performs its function.
When he looks away, and realizes JJ's timing was perfect to blind their adversaries, the whiskers of the black beard almost suggest a smile at the upturned corners of his mouth.
