Kikinnin braves the slime moving over it and striking hard and striking hard on the raging demodand, opening a wide gasp all through the upper torso with Endgammel that shines with holy energy.
Maxim's force missiles fizzle out and disappear as the magic resistance of the creature is unbeaten by the wand.
Juraan steps forward and casts a hold monster on the non injured demodand.

"Hell's Teeth! Reckon I'll need to get old school..."
Stowing his wand (Move Action), the gun-mage moves forward through the slimey muck drawing his shortsword as he goes... (10ft Move Action + Draw Weapon as Free Action)

Kythel successfully dispels the Strength siffonning magics affecting JJ.

The Pharasmite cleric channels energy opening painful wounds on the demodands. The one hit by JJ falls to the ground overdue by the bleeding.
Marigold's searing ray badly fails when it bursts just in front of her hand awkwardly. With the green enemy fallen, she redirects her force ally to the one remaining, and thanks to the lowered defenses of the demondand's rage, it successfully strikes once. Kythel registers the room good enough, but he does not see a doorway or anything else abnormal besides the vent holes in the lateral walls.
At the southwestern corner you find an exceptionally well concealed secret door.

_JJ Surabar |

JJ, wary of the slime on his boots, still hunts about the room, looking for another way out.
perception, underground, prayer: 1d20 + 19 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 19 + 2 + 1 = 37

Circling the room he comes to the southwest corner.
"Hey.... Kikinnin, Maxim... this stone looks.... Oh my! A secret door."

Marigold Montajay |

"W-wow! That was h-hidden really well," Marigold gasps when JJ points out the secret door. "It's a w-wonder anyone sp-spotted it at all!"
She glances around.
"M-maybe it'll lead s-somewhere to g-give us the element of surp-p-prise..."

Kythel of Nisroch |

Kythel is surprised he missed it, "Well done JJ!
I combed over that and did not notice any imperfections in the wall.
Kikinnin, may I borrow your Pearl for a moment?"
Kythel casts Air Walk on JJ as well as Kikinnin, utilizing the Dwarf's Pearl of Power. Between his spider climb ability and the power of his armor, Kythel is not worried about his own ability to fly in this place just yet.

GM Rutseg |

JJ finds something in the wall which appears to be a secret door.
Before going in Kythel makes both the young man and the black dwarf airborne.

Kikinnin: 178/184 hp, AC 33; divine bond 15 min (holy & +1), circle vs evil 130 min, air walk 130 min
Opening the secret door, you find a very short corridor, then a wall of basalt. It does not come to a surprise when after a super detailed search of that wall, another mechanism to make the rock open is found.
The group makes it through to another large cave, some kind of tunnel excavated by the lava of the volcano.
Ahead, at the end of the tunnel, your light is reflected by something metallic, as if there was a door.
It cannot be seen on the map, but there is a door at the end of the tunnel.
Stonecunning automatic rolls

Maxim (+2 stones; darkvision): 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 13 + 2 = 21
As you make your advance, Maxim gives you halt, his dwarven sixth sense tells him there is something odd at the northern wall at mid tunnel. Another of those basalt-looking curtains.

Maxim Snaphånce |

Maxim nods to the others at the now familiar guised curtains.
He whispers the alert to the group, and mulls the way forward...
"Wager its some more o' our favourite slimily dancin' partners... We deal with 'em or press on?"

Marigold Montajay |

"Tch...I'd h-hate to waste our r-resources on them b-but sure as we d-don't, they'll c-creep up at our b-backs at the w-worst possible time," Marigold sighs. "I'm g-game to deal with them n-now."

GM Rutseg |

With the discovery of the curtains, the Cauldron Watchers are able to face the potential danger behind in first place. Behind they find one vrock demon, a kind of demon the group knows well. The skirmish does not resemble the one at the Demonskar where more of them and other demons assaulted you by surprise. Now you are better prepared and outnumber them. Deprived of its surprise element, he, and the other vrock demon behind a curtain a few feet ahead, are an easy victim of the group's staff, axe, spears and gun.
Hand-weaving this easy encounter because we have fought vrocks before and we have many fights ahead
Once the vrocks are dealt with, you reach the door at the end of the tunnel. Opening it the layout of the cavern offers at least three different alternatives: south, northeast and northwest.
New second part of the west map of the Fiery Sanctum is available!

Marigold Montajay |

"Hmm...I think we sh-should ch-check to the s-south before we go n-north," Marigold finally suggests after peering up and down the tunnel. "If it l-looks like it's taking us b-back to where we w-were, then we can head n-north."

JJ advances to the intersection and examines the ground.

GM Rutseg |

Despite the current state of the volcano, JJ is well trained. He is pretty sure the southern tunnel is seldom transited.
In contrast, he finds signs of activity in the northern intersection.
Marigold proposes to go south, you can see a glowing light, like a huge flame, down that corridor. The air also feels flowing hotter there.
If someone else supports Marigold's push south after the new information, we will go there next

Marigold Montajay |

After considering what JJ shares about the southern corridor, combined with the glow and the heat coming from that direction, Marigold looks as though she's reconsidering.
"Hmm...in th-that case, m-maybe that way g-goes to the very c-core? Would explain why there's l-little signs of f-foot traffic that w-way. So I g-guess maybe we should t-try north, first."
______________
In light of new information, Marigold revises her suggestion on which way to go~

Kikinnin Rouradont |

"No, I think you're right, miss Marigold. We take the southern branch first, find out why it's not as traveled. Probably the heat. We got anything to shield us from the blasts of magma? Won't do to injure ourselves unnecessarily."
Kikinnin starts to walk down the southern branch of the hallway. He turns back to his companions, should protective magics require clustering.

GM Rutseg |

"Sure Kikinnin, wait there" Juraan approaches the dwarf and touches him with resist energy to fire 30 as he goes south.
Decided to have a glimpse to the southern chamber before deciding a definitive route, the group approaches carefully the heat.
C14. PYROCLASTIC ACTIVITY
This massive cavern is lit by a large lake of lava. Islands of volcanic stone protrude from the molten rock, but gaps of five to fifteen feet separate them. To the east, the cavern wall curves gently to a larger ledge. At the rear of that far ledge hangs a magnificent tapestry, black with thread of gold strung through it. Through a gap between the tapestry and the wall, you can see a dark chamber extending even further beyond.
The lava of the volcano bubbles in front of you magnificent. The heat is severe but you can probably endure it for some minutes. The air does not seem significantly polluted.

Kythel of Nisroch |

"I can probably scale the walls to get around and I know that JJ and Kikinnin can walk over as well. Maxim, Juraan, Marigold, any spells you have to get over this...obstacle?
If anyone else wishes it, I have one more spell to protect from the elements, here I would think fire to be the most appropriate choice".

_JJ Surabar |

"So long as we don't end up in a fight.." starts JJ optimistically..
Yeah like that is going to happen. Custom map == fight
"I can carry you across one at a time. "
He eyes up Marigold and Kythel. "Maybe two of you at a time at a stretch."
"What say I go scout it out first? Get your bows out incase something jumps out of that lava at me..."
Unless anyone objects, he waits for the team to ready their missile weapons and spells and then tentatively starts to air-walk, well above the hot lava, across the room.

Marigold Montajay |

"Um, I sh-should be able to f-fly over it," Marigold answers as she looks around. "T-too bad that ch-chamber isn't directly across, or I c-could maybe make a b-bridge to get to it."
As JJ tentatively begins to air-walk over the lava, Marigold watches anxiously for signs of trouble...

GM Rutseg |

Juraan advances to the edge of the ledge and tenses "Longthorn", aiming at the area around where JJ is going.
Marigold and the others similarly get into a tense wait.
JJ starts to walk in the air over the lava confident in his horizon domain to protect him.
He advances pretty far walking in the air without nothing happening.

"Should have brought some sausages..." he mutters to himself.

Marigold Montajay |

"E-everything okay?" Marigold calls out as JJ continues his dangerous walk over the lava.

Maxim Snaphånce |

Maxim shoots JJ a wry look when he mentions being attacked in this inferno;
"That's that likely jinxed..."
He eyes the cavern through the heat haze as JJ begins to traverse the ledge;
"Got spells, just none pre-pared... Got my boots. They'll carry me 'cross this furnace iffy' needs be..."
The gun-mage checks his double barrelled pistol with a nod;
"Got me spells that'll freeze tho'. Might be able to plug a plug a geyser or some such if it comes to it."

GM Rutseg |

JJ walks in the air reaching the eastern ledge uncontested. As soon as he places his feet on the basaltic rock, the magma in the eastern side of the chamber splatters as a huge figure gets out of the lava pool.
The lava splashes all over the area, barely reaching JJ, who manages to see a dragon emerging in between the lava and landing on the ledge as well.

"Who the heck are you?! What are you doing in my domains?"
The dragon seems equal parts curious as he is angry by the irruption.

"您被困在這裡嗎?"
"我是JJ"
"Mighty guardian of the lake. I had no idea that I was trespassing on your territory. Please accept my apologies. "
He looks around the chamber at the size of the dragon and the small entrances.
"Are you trapped here? "
Then, realising he has not answered the question, the youth adds. "I am JJ"

GM Rutseg |

"被困?" the dragon starts laughing amused "我不是監護人,JJ。 我是這座火山以及位於其上數英里之遙的所有地區的主人和主人。 是的,你猜得很好,我是Garathrynakh" the dragon smiles proudly, buffing the molten magma on his nostrils.
Seeing the name does not really trigger, he adds, with a self-sufficient smile "雖然你們凡人可能會以熔火之翼的名字更好地了解我"
The dragon stares at JJ delighted in anticipation to the fear he expects the name to strike in the young man.
"Trapped?!"
"I am no guardian, JJ. I am the lord and owner of this volcano and all the region that lies over it in miles around. Yes, you guessed well, I am Garathrynakh"
"Although you mortals might know me better by the name of Moltenwing"
Long before the Cagewrights arrived, before even the founders of Cauldron built the first structure in the bowl of the dormant volcano above, Garathrynakh the pyroclastic dragon (known also as Moltenwing) dwelt here. Moltenwing spent several decades after first coming to the Material Plane ravaging now-ancient towns and civilizations, but eventually grew weary-and retreated into the depths of this volcano to sleep. Above, his legend faded, and eventually settlers reached the mountains and built the first buildings of Cauldron.
The terror fell unknown to most mortals, and only angels and divine creatures remembered of the terror caused by the dragon, who apparently has lived in this place for thousands of years now.

"我還相信,還有其他人,人類和像我這樣的兩足動物,他們會走在你的山洞裡,目的是利用火山的力量來吸取自己的奧秘。"
"You have long rested here. Above there are many who do not recognize your majesty and ownership of the region. One Hookface has but in the last few days tried to claim ownership of the land above, and demons by the score fly in your skies - challenging your right to rule."
He pauses.

The name Moltenwing, pronounced first by the dragon and then repeated by JJ, seems to trigger some recent memories out of some of you.
The dragon seems to smile satisfied by JJ's recognition "是這樣嗎? 您也許是為了讓Moltenwing知道這種攻擊以獲得某種天賦而來的嗎?" the dragon laughs and roars "不用擔心,那些入侵者及其小城堡不會忍受我幾秒鐘的呼吸。 我可以隨時收回自己的土地!" the dragon exhales a flash of flames and smoke before continuing with his talk with the young man.
When JJ talks about the humanoids walking these caves of the volcano, the dragon smiles "您可以參考凱奇萊特人。 那些有用的棋子……它們不斷帶來閃亮的東西。 但是您顯然不是其中的一個,所以讓我知道JJ,是什麼使您突然進入了我的書房?"
"Is that so JJ? Have you perhaps come to let Moltenwing know of this attack in order to gain some kind of gift?"
"Fear not, those intruders and their petty castles will not endure a few seconds of my breath. I can reclaim back my land whenever I please and grasp all their shiny gold!"
"You might refer to the Cagewrights. Useful scavengers those ones... they keep bringing shiny stuff. But you are not clearly one of them, so let me know JJ, what brings you to my den unannounced?"

Kythel is shaken by the presence of the fiery Dragon in the middle of a molten lava pit! Perhaps the most dangerous encounter he has ever faced and with the feats he has performed with the Watchers, that is saying something indeed.
With little gift for languages, Kythel cannot follow the flow of the discussion.
Regardless, the Cleric accepts the hand of Juraan.

_JJ Surabar |

JJ switches back to common. "Well, that is unfortunate. I was hoping there would only be one dragon on my conscious this week."
Hoping to keep the dragons attention on himself (the fool) JJ dashes forward to strike the mighty beast on the nose with Alakast.
Partial charge action
attack, charge: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 23 + 2 = 44
displacement miss on 1-50: 1d100 ⇒ 40
blindfighting second chance miss on 1-50: 1d100 ⇒ 25
But the strike goes wide due to the dragons true form being concealed.
init: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7 Ugh, might be an ex-JJ before he can act.
attack, charge: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (10) + 23 = 33
displacement miss on 1-50: 1d100 ⇒ 62
damage: 1d6 + 14 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 14 + (2, 4) = 22 Ignore extra 2d6 if not evil

GM Rutseg |

While some of you recognize the danger by yourselves, the others are just assembled by Juraan's scaled hand. The professor dimension doors the Watchers to the eastern ledge!
JJ charges in the warm air striking the magma dragon! Only to discover he just found the illusory displaced image instead of the real one.
JJ: 7 = 7
Kikinnin: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Marigold: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Maxim: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Juraan: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Kythel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Moltenwing: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
"Well, do not get it hard on you JJ, it is just business!" the dragon exclaims back in Common, but then freezes at the appearance of larger group of adventurers "Hu!"
Moltenwing: displacement
JJ: air walk 128 min, ¿flying 10'?
Juraan: mage armor 13 h 58 min
Kythel: circle vs evil 128 min, prot. from energy (fire 120) 128 min
Kikinnin: 178/184 hp, AC 33; divine bond 13 min (holy & +1), circle vs evil 128 min, air walk 128 min, resist energy (fire 30) 140 min
Round 1: Maxim, Marigold, Kythel, Moltenwing, Juraan, JJ, Kikinnin

Maxim Snaphånce |

ROUND 1
Unsure of what they are actually dealing with, Maxim brings one of his spells to bear in an attempt to stymie their draconic foe;
"Glitterstof!" Gnomish: Glitterdust! Standard Action cast spell.
Casting Defensively DC19 Concentration: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
Dropping Glitterdust onto Moltenwing.. 190ft. Range. 10ft Radius. No SR. DC17 Will Save or Blinded (can attempt save each round). All within radius are visible for 11 rounds regardless. Thinking here is Dislplacement is only a 2ft. shift while Glitterdust has a 10ft Radius - so dropping it on the image will still nail the source??.
He then calmly draws his pistol (Move Action)

Kythel of Nisroch |

Round 1
Kythel wants no part of a long, protracted battle, he quickens negative energy to drain the Wyrm's life force and casts his most potent spell against a creature of fire, "My Lady, freeze this foe!"
Quicken Channel Negative Energy Shunt out my allies 7d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 2, 6, 2, 4) = 18 Will DC 24 for 1/2.
Cast Cone of Cold - SR Use Hero Point 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 13 + 2 + 8 = 34 I will angle the spell away from where JJ currently Air Walks while still targeting the Dragon. - Reflex Save DC 19 for 1/2 - Damage 13d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 1, 3, 5, 5, 5, 1, 2, 4, 4, 3) = 43 - If sneak attack applies...+ 1d6 ⇒ 3

Marigold Montajay |

Marigold's Round 1
"ನಿಮಗೂ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ!" Marigold responds to the dragon's surprised grunt before conjuring a blessing of fervor for herself and those of her allies within reach.
"Hello to you too!"
Which should be everyone but JJ...sorry :(
Then she attempts to put some distance between herself and the others, all too familiar at this point with dragon's breath and their other magics.
______________
Marigold casts Blessing of Fervor and then moves to her current map position~

GM Rutseg |

Maxim produces a myriad of glittering dust that makes the dragon seem assisting to a party rather than a battle for life or death.
Will DC 17: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36
The thing seems to fall out from the dragon's eyes.
Kythel blasts the dragon with negative energy and ice.
Will DC 24: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36
Ref DC 19 (evasion): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22
Although Kythel breaks the dragon's magical resistance, the dragon performs an incredible evasive movement, avoiding all of the frost.
ring of evasion
Marigold raises her hands and brings fervor to the Watchers, then moves away from the dragon's possible breath.
"Ah, I see you came with friends to steal Moltenwing's hoard!" the dragon smiles and opens his mouth breathing a terrible flow of magma that clings all over your clothes.
Initial Fire damage (Ref DC 28): 20d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 5, 6, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 5, 3, 4, 1, 3) = 75
Magma Breath (Su) Three times per day, an ancient or older magma dragon can breathe a cone of lava instead of fire. The damage is unchanged, but the magma clings to those it damages, dealing half damage each round thereafter for 1d3 rounds. After this magma cools, it crumbles to dust.
Moltenwing: 9 damage, displacement
Party buffs: blessing of fervor r18
JJ: air walk 128 min, ¿flying 10'?
Juraan: mage armor 13 h 58 min
Kythel: circle vs evil 128 min, prot. from energy (fire 120) 128 min
Kikinnin: 178/184 hp, AC 33; divine bond 13 min (holy & +1), circle vs evil 128 min, air walk 128 min, resist energy (fire 30) 140 min
Round 1: Juraan, JJ, Kikinnin Round 2: Maxim, Marigold, Kythel, Moltenwing
Everyone can act!

Kythel of Nisroch |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Round 2
I will take the +2 to attacks, AC, & Reflex saves from the Blessing.
Kythel groans as his best spell is wasted by the cunning Wyrm's maneuver.
Reflex save DC 28 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 11 + 2 + 2 = 32
Kythel manages to in turn dodge away from the Wyrm's deadly breath weapon.
I will hold my action to see the state of the rest of the party before I act, I want to be able to heal anyone who needs it after that blast.

Maxim Snaphånce |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Reflex DC27: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (9) + 19 = 28 +Evasion = 0 Damage
As the magma drake fries the group, Maxim deftly sidesteps with n'er a cinder fleck to his beard!
ROUND 2 Blessing of Fervour: +2 bonus on attack rolls and a +2 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves
The gun-mage shifts across the ledge (10ft. Move Action), then levels his pistol at the mighty dragon;
"Kegel van koude!" (Gnomish: Cone of Cold!)
Standard Action - Cast Cone of Cold through Arcane Gun. Provokes AoO.
Overcome SR: 1d20 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 11 + 5 = 30
His pistol blasts the wyrm with a cone of frozen buckshot!
Cold Damage: 11d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 6, 6, 1, 6, 6, 3, 3, 3) = 46 DC22 Reflex Save for half zero damage

GM Rutseg |

I will roll for you this time to help Kythel decide his actions
Kikinnin+BoF Ref DC 27: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 18 + 2 = 38 2 damage after resistance
Marigold+BoF Ref DC 27: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 13 + 2 = 24 75 damage
Juraan+BoF Ref DC 27: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 2 = 18 75 damage
Maxim, Kythel and Kikinnin avoid most of the breath, but both Marigold and Juraan are badly castigated by the burning fluid stone.
Ref DC 22: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
The dragon utterly fails to see the dwarf's gun is going to shot a frost breath back to him, and howls in pain when his ideas are frozen by the blast!
"This is bad!" Juraan shrieks in pain and tries to cast a spell.
Concentration to cast while suffering continuous damage (DC = 10 + 1/2 damage + spell level = 31): 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (9) + 20 = 29
Juraan is suffering half the damage of the blast as continuous damage = 37, hence +18 to the DC
But the raw pain of the magma ruins his concentration as he is trying to cast.
Moltenwing: 78 damage, slightly wounded, displacement
Party buffs: blessing of fervor r18
JJ: air walk 128 min, ¿flying 10'?
Juraan: 58/133 hp, mage armor 13 h 58 min

Everyone except Maxim can act!
