yeah he isnt immune to poison. just resistant to the bad effects heh.

i figured a snake man using snake style while drunk was a funny enough visual hahaha

just another snake oil salesman if you ask me

I have some questions regarding a character please:

1) If we want to take a prestige class in the future, do we have to match the fluff for that class? (i.e. would an aldori swordlord have to be aldori? or even human?)

2) As we are allowed to bring cavaliers and paladins, does that mean we can bring mounts? Do we then count as outnumbering for performance checks?

3) Assuming we can bring mounts, do you have to get a mount as a class feature or can you buy one with your starting gold? If so, what are the limits? Could I buy a dire bat if I played a halfling?

4) Can we buy chariots?

5) What terrain is the arena? Is it a giant pit filled with sand? Is there cover? Places to hide for rogues?

6) Would you consider other races not listed? Gnomes? Non-Noble Drow?

7) Would you consider some of the cavalier archtypes with the samurai? Or the rogue archtypes for the ninja?

I know this a lot of questions, I've been thinking about this a lot. I will send you a private message with some of my specific concepts and you can let me know if I'm completely off base.

Thanks

1) If we want to take a prestige class in the future, do we have to match the fluff for that
class? (i.e. would an aldori swordlord have to be aldori? or even human?)
Yes as the lore is not homebrew in a sense.

2) As we are allowed to bring cavaliers and paladins, does that mean we can bring mounts? Do we then count as outnumbering for performance checks?
Yes Mounts are allowed. No they do not count outnumbering.

3) Assuming we can bring mounts, do you have to get a mount as a class feature or can you buy one with your starting gold? If so, what are the limits? Could I buy a dire bat if I played a halfling?
Given as a class features. Non flying mounts. Any exotic mounts check with me first.

4) Can we buy chariots?
No. if there is chariot fight probably will provide you

5) What terrain is the arena? Is it a giant pit filled with sand? Is there cover? Places to hide for rogues?
A mix but mostly sand. Maybe as I intend to change the map from time to time.

6) Would you consider other races not listed? Gnomes? Non-Noble Drow?
For now just the listed races

7) Would you consider some of the cavalier archtypes with the samurai? Or the rogue archtypes for the ninja?
Yes samurai and ninjas allowed

In the spirit of the campaign, I decided to uphold the theme and play a character with mostly gladiator levels. All of you from the last campaign will recognize his concept similiar to Lucifer. All he is missing is his cadre of Hamatulatsu-styled "devil-nuns."

******************************************************************

DIABLO
Male Tiefling Rogue 1/Fighter 1/Gladiator 3
Gladiator type Career
Reputation 1d3 ⇒ 1->12 (1 rolled, -2 heel, 3 class)
Persona"The Knight of Terror" Heel/Showy
Signature Move: The Devil’s Pitch
1. Coup De Grace (full round) – Plunge trident into unconscious foe.
2. Free action – Raise the impaled body up high in victory.

Appearance

Think Chaos Warrior from Warhammer. Diablo dons an ornate set of crimson red hellknight armor with fiendish motifs. Glowing red eyes peer through the faceplate of the horned helm that resembles the monstrous head of a fiend. His favorite weapon is a heavy mace, the favored weapon of Asmodeus and Dispater.

Backstory

Originally from Egorian, Cheliax, Diablo was a former hellknight who was excommunicated from his order for his twisted unorthodox methods. Having lost his purpose in Cheliax, the dishonored ex-hellknight committed himself to being a career gladiator in the Immortal Games where he can reap the self-indulging awards of winning and causing terror.

As part of his intiation, he was thrown into a battle royale match as the "heel" to foment drama and make things interesting.

Character crunch sent and linked in profile.

For those reusing the same characters do remember to revert to 20 point build.

Hi guys loving the submissions however may I request if you guys can work a little lore of Tymon into your background so as to be cohesive with the setting.

I have a suggestion how to rectify the severing feat regarding weapon types (B/S/P).

Just change the maneuver name based on weapon type.
Slashing weapons - Severing (leave)
Blunted weapons - Pulverize - this can have similiar effects of dismember. Just like in video games/cinema, you hit the guy so hard his limbs/head explodes. I can see Bruennor pulling this off.
Piercing weapons - Impale - You can't really dismember with a piecing weapon, so my suggestion is give it something similiar to a grappled effect similar to a harpoon or hamatula strike feat.

Unarmed Strike - the effects can vary. But one way I can see a dismembering effect is simply the person grabbing and ripping off someone's limb (like in Twilight - not a good example but you get the idea).

well the unarmed strike grabbing and ripping off of a limb, there is a feat for that called Limb Ripper that he put in the campaign info.

aaallllsssssooo i had a question as to our role: are we still going with a slave type angle, or are we more like regular paid professional fighters (similar in vein to modern MMA fighters), or are we more like rockstars (in a sense that we are treated very nicely, etc).

Mainly what i am wondering is are we all living in one big common room, do we each have our own room in the ludus, are we all sleeping in a box, etc.

Sovereign Court

Our roles are no longer restricted to the slave angle. We could be paid volunteers (auctori), ex-slave careers, sponsored pros, prisoners on death row, etc.

As for the celebrity status, I'm assuming that comes with increased reputation and the perks. Another suggestion is perhaps our reputation score can allow us access to certain campaign vanities.

As for accomodations...good question.

Yeah, in a way you are like celebrities among the general populace. However in the eyes of the Priesthood you are all slaves and vessels to them and will not hesitate to kill you if required.

Accommodation which type do you prefer? Maybe a buddy bunk system?

I will rework my back story tomorrow from work.

Well I bought a 75 gallon barrel of ale so I need a place to put that hahahaha

Hey, Loup, owner of Tekumsah La'Awethikah here. As usual, I've changed my mind, especially after realizing Ariella's new form was essentially what Tekumsah was going to be.

Anyway, my new submission to this game is a new version of Alicarus Vorasik. He is now a vicious dual-wielder, representing the interests of the infamous Red Mantis Assassins in these gladiatorial games. All his crunch is up, including persona and signature move; I'll get fluff up shortly.

Now, some rolls!:

HP: 12 + 10 + 5 + 4d12 ⇒ 12 + 10 + 5 + (4, 1, 3, 6) = 41 1st level+Con bonus+favored class bonus+next 4 levels

EDIT: Okay, those rolls were pitiful. Can I just take average+1 hp for a total of 55?

"Okay, those rolls were pitiful. Can I just take average+1 hp for a total of 55?"

That's what I did.

I will update my background sometime today when I have a chance.

sure. :) Also your reputation should be 10+ 1d3 + glad levels + face/heel modifier.

Great background, however it only explains how you became a gladiator. Can you expand on it how you come to Tymon and reasons to response to the call to sacrifice your life in the Immortal Games.

I updated my background. Okay now?

Sorry for the delay on the background. It'll be up tomorrow. Just weekends I got packed with RL games. :)

no-one wanna go down the paladin route for healing aye?

Updated background. Less comprehensive than my last character.

i tossed a pally around in my head, but i decided monk right now. Should I perish i may go pally :)

Paladin is tempting, but without a house rule that would let you smite your oposition it hurts them too much.

Agreed, Garris. I was going to try a paladin, but I realized that there might not be many evil characters, and there was no guarantee there would be any at all...

As for my background, I unfortunately can't edit the actual profile right now. Here's what I'll throw in:

Why Alic is at the Immortal Games:
In a nutshell, Alicarus has gone to these games for two reasons: 1)He's a skilled gladiator, and well-known and competent. He was actually invited to the games for his renown and skill. However, more to the point for Alic himself, 2) The Red Mantis wanted him to. This is a big deal, and could really spread their influence and knowledge. They told him; he did as they wanted. Simple as that.

New Rep Roll: 10 + 1d3 + 5 - 2 ⇒ 10 + (1) + 5 - 2 = 14

There will be big monsters that might be evil...but yeah lol.

Well only archetype that cvan benefit os perhaps the oathbound paladin of loyalty.

Oath of Loyalty

To most paladins, their word is everything. When they say something, it will be done. Those who take this oath put that ideal to the test every day. The oathbound paladin’s word is a promise, a sacred bond, and also greater power in the cause of law and good. She is careful with her words, lest she agree to something she cannot fully support.
Loyal Oath (Su)

Starting at 1st level, once per day as a swift action, an oathbound paladin can choose a willing creature within line of sight as the target of her loyal oath. When the paladin is adjacent to the target of her loyal oath, she grants the target a sacred bonus on saving throws and to Armor Class equal to the paladin’s Charisma bonus. The loyal oath lasts 1 minute, or until the paladin dismisses it (a free action) or discharges it (see below), whichever comes first.

If the target is struck by an enemy and the paladin is adjacent to that enemy, as an immediate action she may make a single melee attack against that enemy; making this attack ends the loyal oath. At 4th level and every three levels thereafter, the paladin may use her loyal oath one additional time per day.

This ability replaces smite evil.

why he is at the games:

The Drunken Snake pursues martial perfection, the only known way to do which is to fight. Why bother adventuring, going out to spend most of your day camping and walking and some of it opening moldy doors and maybe doing a bit of fighting when one can live in a city with all the amenities and have your opponents brought to you?! Plus, booze.

Reason he is here::
You may think his whole 'persona' of being the reaper is just an act. Nobody is not sure. He just showed up in the area, and volunteered himself for the fights. Nobody argued with the dangerous looking orc with a scythe.

finished background, ready to go.

Hi all, do submit your characters for those who expressed interest. I will be closing recruitment in 24 hours.

Need not have the full sheet, just the concept will do for now.

Alright for those 8 that have submitted you are in already. Still open for more to submit for consideration. Please head to discussion thread.

Hello DM Heterocephalus,

The campaign idea you have presented here is certainly intriguing and although I love playing casters, I must say the idea of a campaign where all players must begin as non-casters in a gladiatorial setting is interesting.

I was indeed thinking of going the Paladin route, as you put it, but it does not seem like a Paladin would be a very appropriate character choice for this type of campaign. Although the goal of achieving the greater good might be a worthy one, fighting in immortal (very mortal for some) games seems to entail committing a lot of sins even if they are done with the greater good in mind. It seems like a Paladin would quickly become an ex-Paladin in this kind of setup.

It seems to me as if the Gladiator is the most appropriate of the listed classes for this setting. That is a third party class, though. You mentioned you might be open to other third party content too, correct? If so, I have some ideas of what I might like to try. :)

Well I removed class alignment so there do not matter anymore about morality. Your deity now will be Gorum, since smite evil is such an important feature I am considering to houserule that alignment does not matter too since the power comes from Gorum.

Alright I decided, for Paladin since they need not be Lawful Good Only and they worship the deity Groum.

Gorum (pronounced GOR-um)[1] is a god of battle above all other pursuits; it is said that if there is ever a time with no more conflicts to be fought, he would rust away into nothingness. Known as the Lord in Iron, his faithful believe he is present in every iron weapon of war that is forged.[2]

Church of Gorum

The church of Gorum proclaims faith in strength and power, over spirituality or intellect. High priests are great warriors who attain their position through battle. Priests wear heavy spiked armor and forsake non-metallic weapons. The services conducted by the church consist primarily of actual and improvised percussion, to include clanging weapons against shields.[5]

Thus by fighting in battle, the Paladin is in line with his code of Honor. Thus Smite Evil will work regardless in the arena battle. More like a quack Paladin as if he is thrown in an undead setting or evil setting he will find himself reduced to just a normal fighter. However throw him in a battlefield and he will be an effective "holy" fighter for his deity Gorum.

i am considering to limit this build though and looking to have maximum 2 paladins of such kind in the team and no more. So do indicate interest.

I see. Well that does change things. Anyway, I have just sent you a PM with some ideas, so I will wait for a response on that first.

Also, what is the venue for this game? Is it PbP or some sort of chat or something else? What is the expected activity load (whether it be post frequency/length or chat meeting fequency/length)? Thanks for the info! :)

It is Play by post Only.

Minimum 1 post a day and during combat has to post an action within 24 hours or risk missing your turn.

DM Heterocephalus wrote:

Thanks for the update on this. btw: we were posting past each other for a while - I was sending you a PM while you already responded and vice-versa - hence the sometimes seemingly disjointed conversation, where I didn't yet know your answers in a PM/post, even though you had already provided them.

Anyway, in your experience, do PbP games last to the end, or do they just dissolve along the way? Does the DM and do the players usually find a daily commitment manageable? I don't have much experience with them, hence all of these seemingly strange questions.

Lack of momentum kills the games. It requires commitment from the players and DM to continue the momentum.

So far in our previous campaign I would say its pretty successful for now.

I'd say about 50% of PBPs die, but that's usually the DM's fault. DM Hetero is a good DM, so it should be fine. This is also the optimal form for PBP in my opinion. Basically a string of encounters with little RP breaks in between.

yeah we have been running this game for awhile now, changing and tweaking things along the way to get the good feel. then it was decided that a major direction change would come along, so a new pbp thread was started. most of us here were playing in the old game.

we lost a few players, and usually quite quickly gained more.

Any of the existing 8 players considering to do a Pally character in view of the Smite Evil change?

Her Story

Spoiler:

Ghilanna Daevon’Lyr
Ghilanna once again cursed under her breath. What in the Abyss had this world come to? The other human scum turned to run, as her lizard pulled the corpse of their companion off her lance.

Ghilanna cursed her mother for her poor timing, her sister for her perfidy and herself for being a damn fool. Warlord, all she’d wanted was to be the House Warlord. Sharyeel could have the matron’s damn seat for all she cared, but that became impossible when she took Cythanlin for a lover. That one had never gotten over their duel in the academy, and no doubt wanted the Warlord’s baldric for her own.

Technically, the timing wasn’t her mother’s fault however. Sending Ghilanna to the Echo Wood to negotiate with the hobgoblins was necessary, Sharyeel just took advantage of it. Now she was stuck here and everything’s gone to crap.

She should have realized an army of hobgoblins, and their worthless kin, was pointless, but what choice did she have? They hadn’t even made it past the stunties, much less down to Sekamina, and the Wood had become unfriendly once she returned alone.

Her reverie was temporarily broken by the pitboss, Freth, yelling something or another from his platform to the north. He was too far away for her to make out the babbling and she added her poor mastery of surface common to her list of curses. With her chin on her fist and lost in reverie, Ghilanna lost herself in the sound of her lizard finishing off her most recent sparring partner.

Still ignoring the pitboss, she once again sank into her reverie, cursing fate, the gods, her sister and the Black Marquis. How was she to know the pipsqueak would get so upset at the loss of one little farmstead. It’s not like there weren’t more humans to work the land and she’d been amazed how quickly the remaining hobgoblins had quieted down for only fifteen slaves.

All had been fine until the Marquis’ men purged the Wood. Damn him, it was only fifteen! And half were children, useless for just about everything anyway! Worthless!

Oh, he’d thought he was so clever sitting up on his little wooden throne looking down at her. “We’ll see how you like slavery when the tables are turned,” he shouted in his little merchant’s voice. Then the half-orc entered the room and she realized this might be serious.

Ullorth Ungin. The little weasle had sold the naming of her punishment to the Ullorth Ungin, Despot of Tymon. It seemed that although slavery was illegal in the River Kingdoms, the Marquis had found a loophole.

And what did Ullorth Ungin condemn her to? Hah! Fighting in the arena, as if killing sunlovers was a punishment. That elf Antelo had refused to train her of course, but what could he possibly have to teach?

Now she just had to figure out what these “Living God Games” were and then she could decide whether to stay or escape.

Her Personna:

The Witch Queen

Spoiler:

No one has bothered to tell Ghilanna about personnas and that may be for the best. Evidently, combining every old wive's tale about dark elves into one personna couldn’t hold a candle to the real thing. It wasn’t just that she was cruel, vindictive or arrogant - they were such a part of her that she didn’t even know what those words meant! Her best behavior eclipsed the worst rumors they’d spread so far and she’d not even begun fighting yet.

Ullorth swears he knows what he’s doing, that this is the year we’ll win. That was all fine and good. What really bothered both Erevil and Freth was what winning would do to them if this was how low they went to accomplish it...

DM Heterocephalus wrote:

I would be tempted to level into it. I would be the crazy exception not wearing the big spiky armor.

Are we going to level in this? I know in the gladiator one you were going to level us.

Dark Archive

I am in with a pally build. Trying to choose one of three builds at the moment. My main issue is that nothing I got stands a chance one on one with crane wing. If you only have one attack Crain Wing wins in melee every time. I see it at least three times in the submittals too.

Our DM shot down my first idea because it required Bard 1, and, well, no bards. :)

One concern is that I see two submittals that are outside the races allowed list. Is that race list firm, or not?
