Sorry to bother you with more questions....

How do you feel about PrCs? Are you cool with, Bloatmage, Diabolist, Genie Binder, Harrower, and Cyphermage?

Do you have a preference for ability scores or do you care if we min/max? Some people are particular about anyone dumping more than one stat below 10.

I am very interested in joining this. I saw in your campaign info(had to copy and past into a word doc for later reading) that you're including classes on the necromancy school. Would you mind if I put forth a necromancy specialist?

I will have full build up tomorrow if you'll allow it.

Also just so you know I don't have internet at my home so my posting is limited to 2 hours/day(library use). Is this going to be a problem? I'll still be able to get in the 1 post/day that most DM's require but it might be difficult to do more than that based on response time.

All of those PrC's are okay. If you want to be a Cyphermage, just tell me, and I can work in a Cyphermage mentor somewhere down the line. Other than that, the others won't need anything specific.

For ability scores, min/max away. I'm not going to complain about low scores, so long as you play them properly (I don't expect the 7 WIS character to come up with all the good ideas, for instance).

A necromancer is a good choice, as no one else has submitted one yet. There aren't any alignment restrictions, so you can be evil if you want to.

2 hours/day is just fine. I'm not expecting more than 1 post/day from people (though more is just fine by me), and the nature of this game means that most times you likely won't be keeping anyone else behind if you fail to post a day or two.

Sweet I really am looking forward to this. Now to just get to a computer with herolab so I can start playing with ideas lol.

Just out of curiosity did you adampt your romance system from the Jade Regent adventure path because they seem really similar(identical).

Shane Gifford wrote:

So, if you guys want, you can also add some description of their personality; if not, it's fine.

I think I linked this right, but more on his personality as I will attempt it (Of course, once play starts, he may develop in ways I didn't expect)

Spoiler:
Pakak has the seeds of human genius in him, but still feels flashes of orcish rage and other passions. This makes it hard for him to conceal what he feels sometimes. He's distrustful initially, too many folks have mocked him, tried to abuse him. Authority figures he's known have been less interested in what is fair, than what keeps things moving smoothly. Pakak thus sees rules as usually being in favor of whoever makes them. He doesn't go out of his way to disobey them, but he doesn't much care for them given his druthers.

Oddly, Pakak has a kinder heart than he probably should. He's no love of bullies, because he's been bullied. He dislikes those that abuse power, so is unlikely to abuse whatever power he gains as he doesn't want to be one of those people. As the sages say, "From the cruel I have learned kindness, but I've never been grateful for the lessons." A part of him is reluctant to show his better nature, fearing others will try to take advantage of it.

@mathpro: Yes, the romance system is taken directly from Jade Regent. I figured I'd make use of it since it was already there.

Hey! you forgot my Nidalese Shadowcaster! lol, probably cuz i'm currently lackin an alias, huh? Will work to fix that today.

Definitely very interested. Looking at making an arcane bomber with a couple levels of mindchemist alchemist thrown in. This is the kid that is always experimenting in his dorm room, the occasional explosion going off. He can usually be seen sans eyebrows. Will get up a more complete concept and background in a bit but wanted to see if that would fit the flavor you are going for.

I am definitely interested in the Cyphermage.

Aloysius Konrad wrote:
I am definitely interested in the Cyphermage.

It's got surprisingly good synergy with the Scroll Master Wizard arch-type and is uniquely Varisian abet riddle-port rather than Korvosa.

I had a few ideas looming about:
A Conjurer (Teleport: Specialist) wizard PrC to Bloatmage. Only part that sucks is being fat.
A Conjurer (Infernal Binder) wizard PrC to Diabolist. Sort of classic and a bit overdone.
A Transmuter Scroll Master wizard PrC to Cyphermage. Because it sounds kooky.

I'll figure something out later and post up a character.

What killed the cat:
Twelve year old Cezar is the only child of the Varisian widow Dianni Razvan, a gorgeous woman who married young. Some people say that his smile is a trick, to fool you into letting him go as he pleases. Others will say that it's just a mask that hides away a lonely boy with no hope for his own future. More still will tell you that he's a genius with a heart the size of his brain. They're all correct.
From a young age, Cezar has always been marvelously curious as to how everything works. Everything. People, machines, puzzles, the weather. If it *does* something, Cezar wants to know how and why it does it. His curiousity has gotten himself into trouble on ocassion. Actually, he's had to trick his way out of situations fairly often using his impish grin and the sparkle in his eye. Actually...more often than not. But if he hadn't been so insistent on knowing what was making a ruckus in the alleyways at night, Cezar would never have met Reem: a brown piglet that he's kept as a companion ever since.
It's been a while since Cezar and Reem became friends, you'd really think that the little guy would have gotten a bit bigger by now. Cezar's never given a second thought to it, all of the adults love how cute Reem is, and he doesn't mind the little guy's size at all.
Oh, that sparkle in his eye. No, you didn't get something caught in your eye, his did. Some people are wonderful craftsmen, some can conjure the elements to their bidding. Cezar gave his mother a comfort nobody else could give: the silent presence of his deceased father, Mikal.

In the months of Dianni's pregnancy with Cezar, money was tight, and Dianni pleaded and begged Mikal to do some extra work so that they could afford to move to Korvosa (where Dianni had been raised). Mikal reluctantly took a job guarding a caravan to Sandpoint.
En route to the city, Mikal's caravan was assaulted by an unknown group, but the aftermath of their attack was a horrible sight; Burned bodies and mangled horses. The cargo wasn't even touched. By hands at least, it was destroyed in the assault. Investigation of the site revealed that the flames were magical in nature, but nothing further was found out. Dianni grieved for weeks, blaming her pushiness for Mikal, and the caravan's, disaster. Among the crew was one of Mikal's friends, who had a newborn daughter named Vasile. This accident left Vasile without any parents, and Dianni took in the infant to raise as her own.
After a few months, after receiving compensation from the merchant company that had hired Mikal, and after delivering Cezar, Dianni decided that it was time to move to Korvosa.

Growing up, Cezar always viewed Vasile as his big sister, and it wasn't until he was ten that he was even told about the attack. Even after learning this, he still considered Vasile family.

A few months later, Cezar and Reem were wandering the streets when they found an unmarked, leather-bound book. Naturally, Cezar had to read it. The book was a discarded spellbook, with but a few spells of illusion magic. Studying the book constantly, Cezar showed more and more ability in conjuring the small images, changing the world around him. Or at least what it looked like. The changes were brief, and they were obviously unnatural at first, but Cezar became relatively proficient with relative ease. Reem seemed interested in the magic as well, and you could swear that the little pig could understand just as much as Cezar did out of that book.

On his thirteenth birthday, Cezar became determined to learn more about the illusions he could produce, why he was able to do this but others weren't. He convinced people from his area to help pay for his tuition to the Academae, where Vasile had shown an interest as well, as her own talents were similar to his own. Now, here he is, ready to learn anything about everything.

Please pardon the hectic nature of how that's formatted, I was essentially just putting things down as I came up with them.

Question,
I want to take the Nidalese Shadowcaster trait. Can I pick the spell later on? I'm afraid if I pick a spell now, I may not learn it later on, since there's no guarantee I'll succeed.

This is a really interesting idea. I think that when it is time for me to restart my Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign, I will use a similar framework.

@Monkeygod: My list only had people who've currently submitted at least a build. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten you!

The trait is fine; when you learn a spell with the shadow descriptor, you can either choose to use the trait on that spell, or save it for a later shadow spell.

@Waltz: Well, you're probably going to want to go with a concept which is enjoyable for you and overlaps with the least amount of other applicants. Out of those three, the Diabolist seems to be the most different from the other applicants who've submitted a character. However, if you like one of the other choices better, feel free to go for it.

@imimtrl: That would work fine, and sounds pretty unique.

@Cezar: For smallfolk, the Academae's entry cost is really steep, and you'd have to be convincing a heck of a lotta people to be parting with months' worth of salary for no return. You'd probably want to come up with a specific person with at least a decent amount of wealth who he convinced, and something Cezar'd be giving in return, instead of saying he convinced some people.

Including the other student is alright, and I can work her into the plotline. The only question is, will you two become more than friends, or will another student snatch her away from you? :P

Here's my submission, I have a backstory, just haven't gotten a chance to write it up yet.

@Kheldor: Cool, looking forward to that backstory. Just a little nitpick: Your quarterstaff's damage should be 1d6-1/1d6-1, whereas it's currently 1d6/1d6-1. I'm sure it's just a typo, just pointing it out.

Also, you can pick your 4 cantrips and 2 1st-level spells which you start with, as well as the rest of your starting equipment.

Yea, I know how much it actually does, just a teeny bit lazy. I'll figure out my spells later.

Question though:
Beyond spell duels and such, will there be much actual more normal combat situations?

Well, in order for your characters to pay for tuition, your going to have to generate some cash. If you really wanted to, you could just do a lot of errand running, with low risk but low reward. However, most likely you'll want to opt for some more dangerous jobs, which take the form of sidequests. These jobs are rather dangerous, and can involve combat, skill challenges, or puzzle solving. You will likely need to work together with other wizards, and maybe even hire some NPC's to help if the job is a really big one. However, the jobs pay out much better.

Beside that, I will have some plot devices set inside the Academae where normal fights will occur. I'm likely going to make them easy, at least until I get a feel for your character's fighting level, because of the strange party comp, and the nerfs I gave to a starting wizard. However, these plot devices will be somewhat sparse, and most of what you'll be doing is roleplay.

Sovereign Court

Do you feel that a Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster could have any sort of potential in this?
Would you allow a Thassilonian Wizard from the Inner Sea Magic book?

@Enaris I could see Arcane Trickster as being very useful; really, though, this campaign is really open-ended as far as you getting free reign of what your character wants to do, so anything could be useful if applied correctly.

I would allow Thassilonian Wizard. In fact, if the flavor isn't to your taste, you could just work it as a zealous devotion to one school of magic. However, if you like the flavor, feel free to keep it.

Another question,
Can we multiclass into a different arcane caster? Thinking I might take a few levels of Shadow Sorc if I get picked.

Sounds good! I'll throw the stats and more complete concept up by the end of the day.

@Shane Gifford
She's my sister, you freak :P
And I'll come up with something shortly for the money.

@Monkeygod: Yes, as long as wizard remains either the class with the most levels, or tied for class with the most levels. So, Wiz5/Sorc2 is okay, Wiz 4/Sorc 4 is fine, Wiz 3/Sorc 5 is not.

@Damien Rosaltier: Well, she's just adopted, it's not like blood relations. Not that freaky, and happens pretty often in shoujo that the guy gets with his adoptive sister. Just sayin'.

Update to backstory:
Around half of a year after finding the magical book, Cezar figured that the best place to learn how to do and see more magic, was the Academae, where Vasile had been showing more and more interest in lately. For a long while after, Cezar did everything he could to start saving money, coppers dropped on the street, silly tricks with his limited magic, physical labor like deliveries, until he finally had enough for his first semester's tuition. It took a lot of convincing before his mother allowed him to go, she didn't want what happened to Mikal happen to her son. She eased back eventually, unable to keep herself from giving in to Cezar's curiosity and smiles. Here he is now, on his thirteenth birthday, ready to learn anything about everything that the school has to offer.

Just the last paragraph has any changes, so that's all I put here.

@Shane Gifford
You're adopted :P

Lantern Lodge

working on a witch now, quick question are changelings allowed as a race? I'm not concerned about the modifiers or even trying to optimize this character, I am enamored with the role play opportunities available by having a hag mother.

My character, working on backstory.

Okay, I'll allow a single changeling, as long as you know you're using human stats.

Lantern Lodge

no problem

Oh, well that explains a lot. For one thing, why he's so against dating her. :P

Backstory:
Not all wizards grow up to know the true powers of magics. Such is the way with young Kai. His mother, his teacher, was afraid to teach him spells that could cause him harm. Instead, she focused him greatly on Transmutation. Because of this, Kai has a hard time understanding how Evocation spells work.

Although timid, Kai isn't afraid to voice his opinion on things or help someone in trouble. He is quick to rush to an ally's aid, even if the odds are against them. He tends to be slightly forgetful at times of great stress.

His Familiar, a Thrush, helps him keep track of things and acts like a mentor to him while at the Academae. The thrush is slightly pudgier than most thanks to eating a fair amount of food that Kai gives her. She tries to be a voice of reason to Kai, but is easily distracted by food if present.

Kai didn't know much about his father, as he was a working man, leaving his mother to his care. A couple of months after his birthday, they raised enough money for him to be sent to the Academae. Seeing him off, his mother hoped she had done the right thing and hoped he would be alright.

Having trouble thinking of things, may add more/edit later.

Meant to ask this before, but totally spaced on it:

Is Read Magic still free for us Wizards?

Good point; read magic is still free, so you really get 5 cantrips.

Ooh, that's good, was going to ask about that. Thank you for clarifying.

This is imimrtl presenting my Arcane Bomber Wizard. Thimble Flittershot! Thimble is a brilliant but precocious young gnome who was sent to the Acadamae by his village. They pooled their money and have sent him with enough to pay for his first term with the promise that he would find work while there to keep going. They told him it was because of his brilliant mind that they did not want to see wasted in a small farming village but the real reason he was sent was that they determined sending him cost less than replacing the various barns that went up in flames and livestock that ran off when one of his experiments went awry. He is incredibly enthusiastic about attending the school having read everything he could on it and it's history.

Arcil Background:

Arcil had a very troubled youth and as such has a very interesting outlook on life and more importantly death. His father was a member of the whispering way and a full fledged necromancer. Once the local officials found out about his fathers involvement in the Whispering way Arcil’s family was expelled from Kyonin. His mother died mysteriously just prior to their being expelled and not much is known to Arcil about the events surrounding his mothers death. With nowhere else to call home Arcil and his fater went to live with members of the Whispering way. They stayed there for many years and Arcil learned under the tutelage of his father. Arcil spent much of his young life watching the members of the Whispering way partake in various missions that would prepare them for the ultimate life his to offer, that being unlife. It wasn’t until his father achieved his ultimate goal and became a litch that Arcil felt he was ready to fully follow in his fathers footsteps. With his connections in the Whispering way sponsoring his first semester Arcil has decided to enroll in the famous Academae in Korvosa. He has been told by the elders in the way to be careful what he shares about his past because others do not share the same understanding that Arcil has been granted since birth.

Potential Schedual:

G101 Introduction to Arcane Magic - First course every student takes, short 1-week class explaining what arcane magic is and how it is harnessed.
G102 Introduction to Somatic Components - >G101 - Prepares students for the complicated gestures needed in casting magic.
G103 Introduction to Verbal Components - >G101 - Prepares students for the difficult phraseology needed in casting magic.
G104 Introduction to Universalist Studies - >G103 – The fourth course taken by every student, and the final one before they begin their classes proper. Gives an overview of each magic school.

I might swap out spells yet but other than that I think he's pretty set unless you see some problems in which case I'd be more than happy to make any necessary adjustments.

And here is a proper alias for Arcil. I might try to tidy somethings up later but everything is there now.

So, here's an updated list of applications:

Cezar Razvan, by Damien Rosaltier -Complete-
Arnault, by Kip84 -Needs changing-
Vasile Liviu, by Edgar Lamoureux -Complete-
Aloysius Konrad, by Sgmendez -Complete-

You guys are doing a good job of making this difficult. It'll be a tough choice.

Any changes you see as being necessary Shane?

Lantern Lodge

good luck everyone!

Yeah it will be interesting to see who gets chosen *keeps his fingers crossed*

Ya forgot me again!! And this time I have an alias! I think I should get in automatically as a repayment for all this neglect, lol

Ps,
The above is in no way serious just me givin you a bit of a hard time, I know there's been a bunch of applicants, and I only posted once I think under the alias, so its understandable

Haha, sorry Kheldor, I couldn't see you in the shadows over there.

I just missed you when I went through all the posts, sorry about that. If you could put your backstory in there, you'll be all good to go.

@Arcil, add the cantrip read magic. I forgot about it when I was cooking all this stuff up, and so now everyone gets 5 cantrips.
