Play the life of a student at the Academae, a school for wizards.

After seeing what kinds of wizards are in play I'll submit mine. An Elven former slave to a noble Chelish house focusing on conjuration/enchantment taking the infernal binder specialization and planning to qualify for Diabolist PrC.

Here's fluffy stuff:

Appearance:

Silyph stands at 5'9'' with straight long black hair. She has a dark tan complexion for an elf; a side effect of growing up in the Katapesh slave markets. She has shining golden yellow eyes and various brands and tattoos mostly on her wrist, hands, back neck, shoulder indicating her place as a slave and various previous ownerships. She wears simple newly bought black robes with a trim of red and brown. She wears a steel bracelet that was formally a shackle.

Background:

Born to a poor Katapeshi slave Silyph was sold into slavery at the age of 12. She has passed hands over the years from one master to the next until her leash was passed to her most recent master Alenxitor Wintrish a minor Chelexian noble of the house of house Leroung. She was originally taken on as a maid to the nobleman's newborn son Triften Wintrish. She cared for the child and watched him grow up till his teenage years.

During his early teens Tiften began the study of Magic and often would demand his maidservant aid him in his studies over the few years during his early studies she gleamed far more information from her aids in his studying than she let on viewing the accumulation of knowledge as a way to gain power. After Tiften's first summer back from college at a notable acadamy in Egorian he struck out Silyph at with his new found arrogance out of displeasure at an offhanded comment she made about him. He summoned a fiendish dog to attack the maid during dinner attempting to impress his father, what would impress Sir Alenxitor Wintrish more was when Silyph took control of the summoned beast and directed it to attack Tiften and counted with a half hazard acid splash.

This display astounded Sir Wintrish and after placating his sons rage developed his own machination towards the girls future. A slave is a valuable commodity, but his house could always use a loyal arcanist and the raw untrained talent the girl possessed couldn't be ignored. For wresting control of a summoned creature is a talent well known, but few aside from some of the most powerful infernal Chelexian conjurers possessed. Instead of punishing the young maid he offered her a deal he would pay for her entrance into the Korvosan Academae upon completion of her studies she would be set free and allowed to work for house Leroung. He would not however pay for the rest of her tuition and would leave her to her own cunning to find a way to cover the costs. If she flunks out he would see to it she was killed and if she refused he would be forced to torture her before killing her to stay his sons rage and make an example of her to keep the other slaves in line.

Silyph accepted his terms and was put on one of Alenxitor Wintrish's merchant ships headed for Korvosa.

Personality:

Silyph is ridged in her behavior always trying to learn and analyze things and those around her. She believes knowledge is power and is constantly trying to acquire more power in general and particularly power over others.

She holds a penchant for the idea of everyone having a master and being a slave to someone or something and it's a trait of the powerful to have others submit to them. She has equal reverence for both Asmodeus and Nethys (God of knowledge/magic).

Her personality expresses itself in her magic as she's fond of the idea of summoning creatures or binding them to do her bidding or dominating others minds.

She secretly wishes to gain enough power to break free of her masters influence entirely.

Will work out a full crunch tonight.

I admit to being a wee bit nervous, but even if I get passed up this time, I feel a bit more confident about how to utilize these forums.

Backstory:
Vasile, born to Iancu and Luca Liviu. Unfortunately, during childbirth, Luca passed, leaving Iancu to fend for himself as a single father. He had to move on from the low-risk, low-pay jobs, as he simply couldn’t afford the cost of living with his newborn child on such a low salary. He found himself taking on jobs with the Vintila Merchant house, be it a small job from town to town, or a trip to Magnimar. While he was out of town, he left his child in the care of Dianni Razvan, the wife of his good friend from the firm, paying for food up front, and upon arrival home, the rest of the fee would be paid in full.

Unfortunately, while he was defending a caravan to Sandpoint, they were attacked. While the actual circumstances are sketchy at best, magic was involved, and a fair amount of it. The only remnant she has of the memories of her father are her Harrow deck, which happens to have belonged to her mother. It was found on a charred and blackened corpse, scarcely identifiable but for the Case which protected the cards.

When news returned to Riddleport that the caravan had been destroyed, Dianni was stricken with guilt and pity, and decided to adopt Vasile as her own. Over time, she gathered the money she needed to take them to Korvosa, and left the dank streets of Riddleport, hoping never to return.

Vasile has had a fairly normal childhood, given the situation. When svasile was about eleven, Dianni finally explained what was known about that day, giving her her father’s last gifts to her, the deck, and her mother's engagement ring (a small, bland affair, but meaningful). Although she isn’t particularly gifted in the use of divinations, she has taught herself, with the help of street harrowers, to read a bit into the future based on how the signs point.

In her time amongst the street performers (even though Dianni discouraged it) she learned of spells. One of the elder harrowers felt empathy for her curiosity and naivety, and so decided to, at the very least, teach her a few cantrips. Immediately, she showed a propensity for very flashy, vibrant spells. She could almost naturally control the bobbing spheres of light she was taught how to create, even forming them into rudimentary shapes with some practice. The harrower, genuinely surprised at the small child’s fairly easy mastery of cantrip-level effects, supplied her with a small spellbook with which to write down the spells she was told to practice.

Soon, her little brother began doing similar things, and eventually, being unable to keep a secret very well, they were found out by Dianni. Rather than becoming mad, she welcomed the idea of the two of them joining the Acadamae, and so decided to enroll them post-haste.

Build changed, as I thought about it, and scrollmaster doesn't fit at all with this character.

GM:
I plan to go through to the Harrower PrC. One of the pre-requisites is Perform(any) 5 ranks. I was wondering if you would consider allowing Profession(fortune-teller) to work for that, as it, thematically, makes sense. I'll be fine with whatever you decide.

I still need to work on the gear (and pick an avatar), but it's not like we can buy that much anyway. Basic concept is a young elf -- not even a hundred! -- who wants to banish Treerazer; and so he goes to where he can get the best education, with the most practice, in (relatively) friendly competition with talented magic users who like to conjure evil things from the Lower Planes.

Question. Can I have a cat? Not as a familiar, just as a pet. One of those cats that like to hang out on your shoulder. Suleiyel has read about the prevalence of imps in the area, and so he has a ring instead of a familiar (so that they can't hurt him by tormenting it); but he also has a certain amount of guile, and wouldn't mind letting people make false assumptions.

Background:
Growing up in Kyonin, Suleiyel sometimes overheard adults talking about someone they knew who just came back injured (or dead) from fighting Treerazer's minions. He would ask how they were going to stop him, and the adults would just smile indulgently and say not to worry, they had it under control. It might be difficult for shorter-lived races to understand how that could go on for decades, but he simply accepted what he was told and forgot about it... until he reached his adolescence and started questioning things. Then, he realized that they'd all been lying to him the whole time. They had Treerazer contained in the Tanglebriar -- which is to say, free and not under their control at all. And it had been that way for about two millennia.

So, Suleiyel started looking into what it would take to answer his original question: how were they going to stop Treerazer? Since no elves had found the answer yet, he decided that maybe it would be a good idea to look outside elven lore; but where? Reading whatever he could get his hands on from the local library, and talking to whatever outsiders were allowed in, Suleiyel learned of Shelyn and her love of beauty. He knew that she would support his desire to end the ugliness of the Tanglebriar, and so he studied her faith, meditating on it and bringing her beauty inside himself. But still, how to defeat Treerazer?

Reading further about the outside world, Suleiyel learned of a unique school of magic: the Korvosan Academae. It catered to every specialty, while favoring conjurers. It also tolerated devil-worshipers -- and so if the faculty thought anything of demon-hunting, they would probably approve of it, due to the rivalry between the two (if the Blood War could be called a "rivalry"). And, the Hall of Wards had a famous annual Breaching Festival to constantly test their assumptions about what would work.

The conjurers were talented in summoning evil beings from the lower planes, the abjurers were eminently practical, and the administrators would likely approve of his life's mission to banish demons. It couldn't be more perfect. Suleiyel immediately began saving up his meager earnings from odd jobs, eventually turning his hobby of research into a profession as a beginning librarian. However, his youthful eagerness betrayed him in the end; despite having centuries left to learn what he needed to know, as soon as he was within striking distance of being able to afford the journey and the first semester's tuition, he sold the longbow and rapier that he'd been given for defending the community -- and lit out to defend them in a much larger-scale, longer-term way.

Description:
You see a young, skeptical-looking elf with pale skin, brown hair, and dark eyes tinted gold. He stands about 6'3" and looks a little less than 135 lbs. There is a ring on his left hand, and he wears the school uniform of the Korvosan Academae.

Vasile:
Actaully, could you perhaps do Perform (harrowing)? It would have the same uses as a profession check, and more, and would qualify you for the PrC by RAW.

So, Suleiyel and Silyph have now applied, bringing the total number of applicants to 14, I believe. There's still a few hours left, for Monkeygod to submit Kheldor's background and for the two that need to make changes to do so (if they're still here).

Okay I'll admit I'm getting a little ansy...

Just an FYI: If I do end up getting selected I won't be able to find out until tomorrow(unless the gracious DM lets me know a little early lol) so I won't be able to post in any discussions until then. I'll be around until 11:50ish CST today.

Btw, Silyph has her full crunch pretty much done-ish (only needing a few minor edits). In terms of wealth/equipment I assume we should probably buy (Paper, Parchment, Inkwell, Ink-pen, Charcoal, ect..) or is that already covered with our tuition?

I'd hate to show up to class without supplies.... <_<.

I like the mechanics on the info page.

DM:
Can do.

Sorry bout keeping you guys on tenterhooks, I'll have the results posted in a few hours, at school right now.

@Sylph: Your tuition covers your boarding, meals, and the things I said to take for free. Any other school supplies will be on you.

Question about scheduling.:

Is it our first two semesters that are paid for or simply the first semester?

Both G102 & G103 prerequisites are G101. Does this mean we can take both those classes at the same time? I'm assuming since if you do it opens up a 4 week gap in our 20-week schedule for the first semester so we can't.

On G100 is it a 20-week class like the rest of them or possibly shorter? Since we pretty much need classes 101-104 filling up our limit of 4 classes per semester it's pretty much impossible to take during 1st semester unless you want to screw yourself up, right? So I guess it's simply an option for 2nd semester?

I've been at work all day the last few days which is why I haven't I written my backstory yet, I can do it tonite once I get home but I don't know if that'll be too late.

Good luck everyone!

@Shane: One question is that if picked would it be possible to swap out the ability given in the arcane bomber that changes out Cantrips for a bonus to hit and damage by sacrificing a spell. It would seem to me that a game like this cantrips would be more important.

Okay, here's the results. Before them, I'd just like to say, thank you to everyone who applied, all the characters are well thought out and fun. That being said, I had to leave some out, so if you weren't picked, sorry, and I wish you good luck in all.

The 6 I have chosen are (in no particular order):

Cezar Razvan (illusionist), by Damien Rosaltier
Vasile Liviu (evoker), by Edgar Lamoureux
Hathin De'Lark (strength witch), by Mark Sweetman
Thimble Flittershot (arcane bomber), by imimrtl
Silyph Verrani (infernal binder conjurer), by Waltz
Pakak (abjurer), by Ridge

Once again, thank you to those who I didn't pick, you guys didn't make this decision easy, that's for certain!

@Silyph: Regardling scheduling questions. Classes G101-104 are all taken in a 20-week span; G101 is only 2 weeks, G102 & G103 are each 4 weeks, and G104 is 10 weeks. Normally, students do not take any other courses during this time, although G100 can be taken during the first semester. The class is sort of a laughing stock though, filled with only the most incompetent at magic, and thus people don't usually take it.

@Thimble: Although I'm usually rather strict on changing around an archetype's class features, I'll allow this one change. You get 4 cantrips, plus read magic, just like the others.

I'm going to open up the OOC now. I'm going to wait until either tonight or tomorrow to open the gameplay thread, though.

Excellent. Thank you!

Thank you! Great job everyone! I didn't envy Shane his decision.

Glad that 'my sister' and I made it in :) Really looking forward to this, it'll be my first game on these forums.

Cheers, guys.

Glad I could be a part of your first game. :P

I couldn't imagine having to choose from so many good apps. I certainly don't envy you, Shane.

@Shane: Thank you for considering me/Suleiyel! I knew that I had some really stiff competition, and so I made sure to have fun in the character creation process itself. ;) I got to learn a lot about Varisia, Korvosa, and the Acadamae; Elves, in order to stand out; wizards and their schools, sub-schools, and archetypes; and good character traits for a social-oriented game. I even bought a couple more PDFs and read them (skimming parts, naturally). I look forward to watching! :)

Lantern Lodge

I hope everyone who made it has a good time

Lantern Lodge

Good luck everyone. A question, do you mind non players dotting your game thread?

It's okay if you want to.
