Tales of the 13th Age: Crown of the Lich King (Inactive)

Game Master Pirate Rob

Tales of the 13th Age lets players enjoy 13th Age games with a continuity of story that still leaves room for the freedom and flexibility that sets 13th Age apart.
The first Organized Play series,Crown of the Lich King contains six linked adventures.

Welcome. Go ahead and roll a d6 for every point of icon relationship you have.

Aside:
You're looking for 6s which give you tangible benefits, while I'm hoping for 5s which give you benefits but come with complications.

Also, tell me a little bit about what your character has been up to recently, just a couple sentences will do.

Finally if you could describe something you know about the Golden Serpent Inn in the capital city.

Aside:
In 13th Age player input plays into a lot of the details. This is an example and a chance for you as a player to help describe the world. Please don't contradict what anybody else has posted but other than that feel free to describe it however you want and I'll fill in some missing details when i start describing things.

Some suggestions: what kind of patrons, food, fancyness, entertainment, etc.

Dwarf King Relationship:
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 5

Prince of Shadows Relationship:
1d6 ⇒ 3

Mogda was a well-respected priest within the dwarven community of Forge. However, as he amassed his riches, Mogda became consumed with greed. He found that gambling was an easy way to satisfy his desires, but he knew it was forbidden by his enclave. He kept his addiction a secret for over a year, until another priest discovered what Modga had been doing. He was excommunicated and, feeling ashamed, left Forge entirely.

Over the next few years, Mogda slowly became accustomed to living the vagabond life. Life outdoors was much different than within the great halls of Forge, but Mogda slowly grew to enjoy the freedom he now possessed. He now travels from town to town, learning new things and meeting new people, and still occasionally indulging in a little gambling when he can...

Mogda heard the Golden Serpent was one of the nicer inns in the city. He also heard it was a great place for interested individuals to earn a fair profit as well. Nervous of getting too caught up in his gambling addiction again, Mogda cautiously approached some of the card-dealing tables around the bar. He eyed some of the gems offered as currency, which was all he needed to suck him back in.

He's spent a couple of days in the city now, but is looking forward to heading out again some point soon. Fortunately, the Serpent provides some of the best ale he's had since he left his old home. And his fellow gamblers seem well enough, but he's certain they don't necessarily have his best interests in mind. But that's okay, because he's certain he'll walk out in a few days time with a fair share of their gold and gems.

So far we know the Golden Serpent is a nice inn/gambling hall. What else does anybody know about it?

I'll get to the Icon stuff once we've got the inn sorted out and I can start putting the details together.

Female Tiefling Paladin 2

Priestess (Positive):
1d6 ⇒ 5

Emperor (Conflicted):
1d6 ⇒ 2

Lich King (Negative):
1d6 ⇒ 4

After weeks of volunteering at the local cathedral Andrasteia is in need of a break. While her skills in treating the injured, and her strangely angelic voice have been a welcome, it is her unique 'condition' of not being entirely human that has caused some trouble. Needing some time for herself she flees her confinement of stone and glass while heading for the Golden Serpent. A night of story and song sounds like the perfect remedy for her weary spirit, having heard from one of the acolytes that a traveling bard was to be performing.

Sounds great. We now know that there's supposed to be a traveling bard performing at the Golden Serpent.

Male Halfling Rogue 2

High Druid (Positive):
1d6 ⇒ 5

Prince of Shadows (Conflicted):
1d6 ⇒ 2

Priestess (Negative):
1d6 ⇒ 2

Though Fiero could see the visible brand on his chest, he didn't realize the full extent of the curse placed on him by the monks of the Priestess until after they moved on. The glowing light made hunting for food nearly impossible. The creatures of the forest shunned him and he soon felt like an alien presence in his own home.

Too late he tried to pick up the trail of the monks and began wandering all over the land. Everywhere he stopped it was the same, the monks were no where to be seen. And no one could remove the curse.

He took to stealing for food and following any trail that might lead him to an answer. He found himself in the capital city, the heart of civilization. If there was anywhere he could find an answer it would be here.

Golden Serpent Inn
At the Golden Serpent Inn he finally found a little bit of home. One of the workers, a half-elf named Hale, keeps a small garden in the back, the center of which is dominated by an old birch tree. Since discovering it, Fiero has spent many hours trying to coax the tree's spirit to communicate. All he has been able to sense so far is a profound loneliness.

We also now know that Hale, a half-elf who works at the Golden Serpent keeps a garden out back with an old birch tree.

Icon Notes:

Mogda - Dwarf King (Conflicted) 5/6
Andrasteia - Priestess (Positive) 5
Fiero - High Druid 5 (Positive)

I'm going to go ahead and move on with who we've got so far, I'll add stragglers in as appropriate. Feel free to read all the spoilers, just because your character doesn't get to see everything is no reason to deny you guys all the cool flavor.

Mogda:
There is plenty of gambling to be had and the gambling is good. Dwarves are somewhat unusual around these parts and your opponents are having trouble reading you. You win plenty of coins and a few gems but not of the size or quality you're really looking for.

Eventually you get invited into the VIP suite where at high rollers play.

Upon entering, instead of the sight you were expecting you see Marasa Ironbeard, a former acolyte of yours.

"Greetings Mogda, it's been awhile... I see you're still engrossed with certain activities. Nevertheless, I need your help. I'll explain the details in a minute once everybody is here."

She fishes out a holy symbol from under her shirt. You recognize it as your old symbol.

This odd symbol has a different precious gemstone forming each of its three prongs.
Recharge with full heal-up: During a short rest, you can regain an expended daily adventurer level spell.
Quirk: One-track mind.
(In this case your 6 gave you a tangible benefit, and we'll save the 5 for later)

"While I can't get you back in the good graces of the King, I think that this would be adequate payment along with the good word I'll put in for you. I don't expect a no."

Andrasteia:

Despite your attempts to rest at The Golden Serpent, Bishop Listra from the local Cathedral catches your attention and pulls you aside.

"While your help at the Cathedral has been much appreciated. I must ask you for more help. A Dwarven colleague of mine is putting together a team to recover fix a certain problem regarding Baron Voth, a former Dwarven prince who has become a lich. I've been authorized to lend your our questing blade, the Blade of Saint Jerome."

+1 to Hit & Damage & You deal +2d6 damage with your first
attack each battle using this weapon
Quirk: Blurts out euphemisms for obscenities. (In this case your 5 came with a real benefit, but also a complication, which may make your life rather miserable the first time you roll a 1 with the blade)

Fiero:
You are entranced by the beautiful halfling bard who has an amazing singing voice. She sings ballads that make you cry and tug on your heart strings. You are surprised when she invites you to her dressing room afterwards but find the invite irresistible. Inside her room you find it covered in the trappings of the High Druid and are somewhat surprised to find a dryad rather than a halfling.

Her beautiful voice however has not changed.
"I apologize for the deception but I need your help, and my identity is not to be shared. Undeath threatens the natural order of things and I need a certain Lich's phylactery destroyed. A dwarf I know is putting together a party to go steal it from the Lich King. After you guys get it, don't let anybody convince you otherwise, drop it in a volcano."

(no item for you at the moment, but I have a fun surprise for you later.

I'll explain what happens once you are all gathered in the back room together. That'll either come tonight or tomorrow morning.

Magic Item Notes:
If you are carrying and wielding a number of items that is equal to or lower than your current level, the magic item personality quirks will tug at you, giving you sudden urges and desires that will feel natural to give in to. But you’ll be in charge.

If the magic leather armor that the dwarves made wants you to drink beer whenever you come anywhere near civilization, that’s a quirk you can handle, so long as you’re not overloaded. But let’s say you are a 3rd level character who can’t help yourself and you take your fourth magical item. Now you’ve got issues. Now you are going to have that extra flagon of ale, even if your body isn’t capable of handling it like the dwarves the armor expected to be working with would have been able to do. And your other three magical items? Their quirks are all going to be in full swing as well. You’re no longer running the show; instead, the magic items are, to some extent, running you.

Mogda stands and blinks at his old symbol, confounded by the situation. He never thought his past would come back to find him at all, let alone here and now.

"Er, um... Marasa, ain't it? Sorry, dun got time for ye. Put all that behind me. 'Tis good to see ye aga'n, certainly, but I'm sorry."

Mogda looks down at the floor, embarassed, and attempts to walk past the fellow dwarf.

Mogda:
Marasa will interpose herself between you and the door.
"Not so fast..."

What would she have to offer you, to get you to accept? Or perhaps there is somebody else waiting in the shadows to persuade you, or maybe she even uses magical force on you. Tell me, how do you end up wrapped up in this quest?

Female Tiefling Paladin 2

"Bishop Listra, I did not expect to find you here." Andrasteia says while performing her religious rituals to honor one of her station. "It has been an honor assisting the cathedral. My sword is yours Bishop, where may I find this dwarf? If the Lich King is moving again he must be stopped for the Priestess and the Emperor." she cringes a bit at the mention of the Emperor's name.

Unsheathing the sword she looks it over, inspecting it's craftsmanship as well as it's intrinsic beauty to one of her order. "I will use this blade well, and restore it back to the order once this quest is complete Bishop."

She replaces her old worn sword with that of Saint Jerome's Blade.

Sorry, out of town trip this last weekend and was unable to post. Blergh.

Mogda sighs heavily.

"Look, what'dya want from me? I can't imagine th' High Priests wantin' anythin' to do with me after what happened. Are ye here to rub th' shame back in my face?"

Well, with the sluggish pace we got started I think I'm going to go ahead and call it a bust. I was looking for a quick moving game with multiple posts a day and it's clear to me that we're not going to manage it. I would like to thank you all for your awesome characters, and it makes me look forward even more to next time.

Awww. I was so excited. :(

Male Human

:( Well let me know if you have any other PbP games in mind down the road Rob. If you're interested in me as a player.

[ooc]Damnit I kept checking the discussion thread adn wondering when this was going to start -_- the bloody gameplay thread never said there was new psts in it for me..was checking daily and wondering if I should prod people lol. Oh well.. If people are still interested in a 13th age game, I have a heavily modified version of Kingmaker in 13th Age that I did for my IRL group. I've currently converted the first 2 books and the third and fourth are about 60% and 20% done respectively. I've been debating whether to run it as a PbP (current group has a PF, L5R and a Mutants & Masterminds game going on right now so we're pretty full). /ooc]
