Oh well, nothing lost by asking. And sphere kenning does honestly confuse me just a bit. I think I have it figured, but every time I read it, I'm left wondering if, in fact, I do.

If I'm right about it, then it works like this: I spend a daily use and up my casting time one step. I pick a talent--for this example, Improved Haste from the Time sphere--and can then grant a target all of the benefits of the talent (extra attack during full attack, +1 bonus to attacks, Reflex saves, and AC, and increased movement speed) for as long as the effect normally lasts. Effect ends, talent goes away.

And on top of that, I get a new base sphere, with any drawbacks and boons that it offers, and can pick talents for it when I gain new talents for increasing my caster level.

If that is the correct reading, I'm already locked into a perfect second sphere to choose, Protection, which is well-suited to the character, his origin in Haemil, and Calledrym's status as Haemil's patron.

Liberty's Edge

I think I've settled on most of my character's details.

I'll be building a mageknight with a focus on the alteration and protection spheres. He'll pick up a smattering of martial talents via martial tradition and the feat exchange program. He's sellsword bodyguard local to Haemil, hired on by Thomas's family to see him safely to Eastgate and back. His alteration powers are going to be built around a specific form. I'm going for a Beorn meets Aragorn vibe.

@Feral - Sounds good. Can you give me any background to work with. Is hi family from Haemil? Or possibly the norther shores beyond Haemil? Or elsewhere?

Who does he worship? Any family? Motivation... beyond cash as any good sells word would be.

Liberty's Edge

I hadn't got that far.

Are there any regions where shapeshifters are more common? I'd imagined he's estranged from his immediate family due to shirking some kind of important lineage that he'd rather not be tied up with but that inner nobility shines through in how tightly he honors his contracts. Maybe his family is responsible for guarding some sacred glade? He's been on his own for a few years, making a living selling his strength and skills to whoever will pay for them. He honors all of the gods that have a part in day to day life but he doesn't hold any one of them in higher regard than the others.

There is no region that has a greater population of skinwalkers anywhere in the world. They are fairly spread out amongst all the major cities and cultures. Skinwalkers originated during the godling wars at the corruption of humans by Korlez, one of the gods. He transformed many humans into lycanthropes and fought on the side of evil. After the wars, most of the them reverted back into their human form. But their lycanthropic ancestry sometimes manifestes itself and create a skinwalker.

I think having you from Parthis or one of the other cities on the northern coast would be very interesting. The people there share a common heritage with the people from Haemil, but they were not touched by elf blood. A lot of them are seafaring people who have a deep affinity for Celestri, the god of the Oceans. Parthis is ruled as a theocracy by a collection of priestesses of Celestri. However, they are very excepting of other faiths and permit the worship of many of the good and lawful gods.

The entire northern shoreline is dotted with other cities very similar yet smaller than Parthis. You could have also been from a smaller town in which your mother was the head priestess. There could be some significance to the location of your town with some undersea grotto or other sacred site. I’ve never had a character come from this region and none of the groups I’ve ever played with have explored it. I would give you a lot of leeway in helping design some good mythology for this region.

Liberty's Edge

That sounds good. I have some experience building up coasting regions and cultures.

I'm happy to help flesh out Parthis and the priesthood of Celestri but this is a playtest, right? I don't know if I'm prepared to put a ton of creative energy into a character that I'm not going to be playing in the long term.

Yes, but I like some background to give me some inspiration for a fun one shot adventure.

You don't need to do anything elaborate. Just saying if you want to make up a town's name, a sacred place, etc. for a back story, go for it.

I want to fill out the abilities sections a bit more but Maddok should be good to go.
