Not to retcon but I was waiting for the crone and birds to act (since they had higher initiative than me and might have done some damage that could have caused me to become wounded or shaken, like they did:). Instead of attacking (since a dagger and rapier doesn't sound all that effective against a swarm of birds) Mirian would have tried to get out of the swarm and head for the crone.

:) Not attacking was not a choice I made after seeing the rolls. I figure that to hurt a swarm of crows in any meaningful way I would need a swinging weapon (like a axe or maul) and not a thrusting one.
Spirit roll to unshake: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Wild die: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 (+1d6 ace) => success with a raise

With her words falling on deaf ears Mirian decides to spur into action. However she is first assaulted by the flock of birds, pecking and clawing. The pirate manages to fight through the swarm of beaks and talons and emerges with her dog companion in tow. Moving on the opposite side of Demetrio she runs towards the crone.

Leaning a hand on his right knee, Barnabas looks scornfully at his useless sword, then notices Mirian had realizes that her rapier was equally ineffective against this enemy.
With a smile, he sprints to catch her...

Toughness is 9, so unshaken after crow attack.
Septimilius grits his teeth as the birds claw and peck his exposed skin. The armor and shield protected his most vital areas, but who wants to get scratched up on his arms? Through the swirling storm of feathers, beaks, and claws he sees Demetrio has reached the crone and Greyfeather is running towards her — and so is Barnabas! He decides to keep fighting the crows, trying to keep them from attacking Greyfeather since she is closest to him. ”Get the hag! I’ll protect you.”

Then technically you should be roughtly the same distance as Mirian as she stood still during the first round (darn Cocky hindrance!). I took this round to move 7 yards (1 on my running die). Although I wanted to move more up the flank so you should actually be closer to the witch than she is.

The spirit roll I asked you to make was not to be unshaken, it was to resist a spell, so I still need you to make one. You've spent the benny to overcome Shaken, but still need the spell resistance roll.
Crone
Before your eyes, the hunched woman steps back into the entrance of the cave. You can see her grow in size, and her body begins shifting to take on many of the aspects of her birds. Her nose elongates into a beak, and her hands take the form of sharp bird talons. Thick glossy feathers cover her body.

Round 3
The scene Septimilius is destroying swarms of birds, about 20' from the melee around the Crone. Barnabus, and Mirian were closing on the Crone, and had almost reached her when she moved back into the cave entrance. Now they are a move away, but can attack and move to engage her this round. Septimilius, had closed to her as well, and can close to attack depending upon the results of his spirit roll vs. The crone's spell... So the Crone is in the entrance to her cave, morphed into something scary, Barnabus, Mirian, and Demetrio are about 6 yards away. The birds are everywhere, but concentrating on Septimilius at the moment.

”We’ll be feasting on your birds tonight you hag!” he taunts. ”Can you push into the cave? Give the birds less space to attack us!”

The Scene:
Mirian, Barnabus, and Demetrio (And Dog) are rushing and attacking the Crone. Since she is in the cave entrance, only two of you at a time can attack her. Barnabus's last strike seems to have hurt her, but she shrugs, and is able to act normally. Septimilius is about 30' away drawing the attention of all the birds, but starting to feel the pain of their multiple small attacks. Dog (Shaken) is working his way towards Mirian, but some of the birds may notice him and take him for easy pickings.
Demetrio> As you begin to close the distance to the Crone, her one white eye pierces you with it's gaze. You feel your joints begin to stiffen, as that awful gaze saps your will...but you are a hero...you will not go down like this, and you are able to stiffen your resolve, instead of your joints, and are able to get to the crone. Unfortunately your hesitation threw off your aim, and she is able to nimbly avoid your blow. You notice she begins to grow and morph before your eyes.
Barnabus> You quickly join Mirian in her rush to the Crone, and are able to find a weakness in her defenses, as she whirls about trying to dodge Mirian. You are able to score a solid hit on the Crone, but she is able to shrug off the effects and turns her evil white eye on you.
Gang up is now effective, but unless one of you can somehow get into the cave behind her, only two can attack her in the cave mouth at a time.
If you try to get past her into the cave
Notice Raise...
There is a pit just inside the door behind her.
Septimilius> Not so fast. As you were shaken, you have to overcome that before you can fight. You can spend a benny to overcome the condition and fight immediately (Round 4 for you), or you can make a spirit roll on your turn. If you succeed you are unshaken, but can't act until your next turn (Turn 5). If you succeed with a raise you can ack immediately just as if you'd spent a benny. Sorry about the delay guys. Between Paizo's site issues, and a terrible hotel connection I was thwarted by the Cyber-gods in posting in depth Thursday evening or yesterday.
The crone cackles with glee, as these foolish morsels decide to deliver themselves to her larder.
Demetrio> You madly dash at the crone, then at the last minute swerve out of her reach, and past her into the cave. Your momentum almost carries you into a spike filled trench just behind the beast, but you are able to adeptly fall to your hands and knees to keep from entering the pit at full speed... Fortune finds you just behind the Crone's knees. Normally I'd require you to spend a bennie for luck to land you right behind her...but this is just too cool to let pass.
Barnabus> Feeling lucky you start to close to combat the crone, when you see Demetrio start his charge, you hold up for a moment to see what happens, and your plan changes midstream, as you decide to make the use of Demetrio's position to send the Crone to the ground. As your momentum builds he launches himself forward like he's going to knock down a jealous husbands back door. His eyes widen in surprise when... it actually works. The crone goes flying backwards into... a pit... where did that come from.
Please make an agility roll to keep from riding the crone down into the hole with her.

With a surge of strength he didn't realize he had, Barnabas suprises himself with the success of his impact with the formidable witch. His shoulder deadened by the impact, Barnabas felt himself begin to tip over with the witch, his momentum carrying him forward and down.

OK. So combat is over...for now.
Demetrio> skillfully jumps down into the pit, easily avoiding the protruding spikes. Only the crone's right hand, and part of her forearm are above the rubble at the moment. The spikes extend about a foot above the rubble, (Some of them anyway) and it is three feet down from the cave floor. He takes his staff, and slams it into the grasping hand, breaking it at the wrist with an audible snap. You hear a cry of pain from below the rubble.
Barnabus> with only a slight misstep, Barnabus joins his comrade in the pit, and with a swing of his sword severs the hand at the wrist. Blood spurts for a moment, but quickly stops. The gasp of pain, turns into a growl of anger.
Mirian> Mirian starts to jump down to assist the others, but seeing no obvious target, decides to take the moment to clear her thoughts.
Birds> The cloud of screaming birds at the entrance of the cave seems to grow. They wheel and fly, and even occasionally dart into the cave, but seem to be hesitant as if waiting for direction. The number of birds seems to be growing however, as they organize themselves into one giant flock. The cave grows dark with the number of birds. Treat conditions as dim light.
Septimilius> Septimilus stands at the cave mouth swinging his mace at the mass of avians, but his swings seem ineffective... still they don't seem to be too interested in entering the cave. The light dimly flickers as the birds block the light from the cave entrance.
Crone> The remainder of the cutoff hand retracts below the surface of the fallen detritus, and the blood soaks into the soil. It becomes quiet beneath the surface.

That's a good question. Is she dead?

The birds are indeed still here, and growing more agitated by the minute... though their focus does not seem to be on you. Every once in a while one darts in and grabs a pebble from the pile atop the crone, and drops it away from the pit... still your presence seems to be a detriment.
Demetrio> Without digging her up, there is no way to tell if she's alive... but from the birds reaction, and the recent sounds, you gut instinct is that she still lives.

"Given how the birds are reacting, I think it's safe to say that she's still alive. Maybe we should dig her out enough to cut off her head?"

”Still alive?!” Spetimilius says as he diverts his attention away from the cave’s mouth to the pile of rubble burying the crone. ”We could bury her more. Though in a way, killing her quickly would be more humane. How to do it with the least amount of risk is the tricky part.”
Demetrio |
"If I thought for a minute, that she would suffocate slowly down there, I'd gladly leave her to her fate. But the crone was stronger than she looked. And I'm sure it's only a matter of time before she digs herself out. But, first, is anyone hurt?"
I believe the plan is to dig her out and kill her. Any objections?
