Barnabus are you still with us?

Demetrio>Hakketh is now fighting his battles in whatever afterlife his deeds proscribed for him. Short of Necromancy...he's dead.

Septimilius> Otto is indeed still alive but seems in shock. (He has seen some vile images). You would need a strength roll with a raise to be able to successfully lift and begin to carry the bulk of Otto.

It' never to late for gray bennies.

Mirian>

Spoiler:

As you enter the tunnel following dog, you go around the first bend, and find dog's body lying unmoving across the tunnel floor.

Barnabas watches the scene, black goop flying into dogs mouth, and shakes his head You're going to get yourself killed one of these days, Barnaba s old salt, helping people with their problems....

Hefting his sword, he steps forward to dispatch the dog, but it whimpers and scuttles away into the corridor. Seeing Mirian giving chase he follows.

"I'm sorry. There's nothing to be done for Hakketh. He's gone."

I imagine we're waiting on something dramatic happening to Mirian. You just had to grab the dagger, didn't you? :-)

Actually I never went after the dog, I just followed it with my gaze until it darted out of view. Then I went up to Hakketh to retrieve the dagger. My next move would be to check what's under him if nobody else does so.

Yep, but without touching it directly. Hopefully that will help :) Or that the undead is already out of the bottle, so to speak and the knife is safe

Mirian> Sorry I read that as slips out of the tunnel instead of slips into the tunnel. Disregard.

Barnabus>Do you want to reconsider since Mirian didn't actually enter the tunnel?

You pick up the dagger with the cloth, and other than it's slightly colder than it should be temperature it seems normal. You can feel the knive grating against bone as it is released from Hakketh's body, and a slight swell of blood follows, but no stream, as his heart has ceased it's rhythm.

holding the dagger by it's hilt with a cloth, you use your foot to roll over Hakketh's body, and see a crimson covered book, with an eye stitched into it's cover...Perhaps the instrument of your release...in fact feeling returns to your upper lip when you see the book.

Barnabas almost goes running off after the dog, but comes up short as the others investigate Hakketh's body "Well the dog's run off..." he says as he arrives at Mirian's shoulder. "Demetrio's the one for forgotten languages and such, what's it say Dem?"

Standing impatiently over Dementrio while he flips through the book Mirian notices Hakketh's scroll case. "What about those scrolls I took from the temple. You said that one of then could work against dark magic. Would you be able to use it against this being?"

Just remembered the scrolls Mirian stole from the temple. One was Dispel Evil. You think that will work? Do we have anyone that can use them?

While the others discuss the book and scrolls, Septimilius kneels next to Hakketh, offering a prayer for his soul’s rest. He believes a peaceful afterlife might be difficult to claim for a man who practiced sorcery, but in the brief time that he knew Hakketh, he seemed like a decent person.

”I hope so,” he shakes his head answering Mirian's question. ”How do you defeat an enemy that can leave a body at will? I don’t know.” Septimilius now stands near Otto, warming up his arms and legs for the feat of carrying the large man.

”So back out the way we came in?”

That's what the book is for. Right now we need to try and do something about the undead me thinks. Unless we follow Mirian who coul argue that we just need to get Otto to the tavern long enough for his brother to pay us :)

Current map Raven Town Map God Infinity........

Sorry guys. Paizo site being down slowed down my responses.

Demetrio>

Spoiler:
When you open the book it just "feels" wrong. The script is written in a square spiral but you're not sure which way to start reading it, and many of the characters are wrong. With a raise, you know this is not a spellbook, but a book of obscure knowledge of some sort.

Mirian>You think the scroll might work if anyone could read it. Demetrio might have the best chance, since he knows more about arcana than anyone else in the party. Or alternately a grey or Black bennie would almost certainly grace the tongue of any who tried.
Of course at this time there is no target to read it at.

So to recap...

Mirian is standing talking with the dagger held carefully in her hand (Through a cloth).
Hakketh is dead
Otto is unconcious
Demetrio is reading the book
Septimilius is warming up his muscles and eyeing the exit.
Barnabus is standing with the others questioning what you have found.
Dog is somewhere else.
The tomb is unexplored.

Actions?

Demetrio closed the book forcefully and rubbed his temples in frustration.

"There's something profoundly wrong with this book. I cannot begin to comprehend reading it. Perhaps it requires a cypher or even magic. Regardless, there isn't much here we can use. At least, not as it is."

Demetrio begins to look around.

"But perhaps there is something here we are missing? We should spread out and look around."

”That thing is still out there. I don’t know why it wanted Otto dead or if it wants it bad enough to come back to finish him. See if you can find something in this crypt, I’ll look down the tunnel and see if I can catch the trail of Hakketh’s dog” Mirian says and wraps the dagger completely in the cloth then places it in her slingbag along with the jewelry she pillaged earlier. She slings Hakketh’s scroll case up on her shoulder and walks to pick up her torch. With her rapier and torch ready she moves cautiously to the tunnel entrance and peers through the exit where Hakketh’s dog escaped.

Spending a black bennie to help us.

Current map Raven Town Map God Infinity........

Mirian>Well I guess with a black bennie, I'll have to give a bit more than I had planned...so stick with me...

As you bend over to retrieve Hakketh's scroll tube your still enchanted lower lip begins to tingle. Your vision swims a bit before you're eyes, and as you straighten you can hear a voice inside your head.

Spoiler:

You believe this is the voice of Hakketh.

I have turned my back on my friends, and it is my curse to stalk these tombs the rest of my day. Read the scroll...I will help you.

Mirian then opens the scroll tube and realizes that she can plainly read one of them. Yes...Yes that's the one. As Mirian rises to her feet, she hears a scuffling from the doorway, and dog comes tearing in, his eyes glowing dark green and terrible, and launches itself towards her.

The others step forward, and attempt to hold dog off while Mirian grabs up the scroll, and in a voice not her's alone, but seeming to harmonize with another deeper one she begins to read.

The combat continues around her, but steadfastly she continues to read. Suddenly there is a flash and a pop, and the scroll dissolves into ash. The smell of burning flesh fill the room, and dog...or the creature formerly known as dog gives a horrendous howl, and drops to the ground. A ghostly form emerges from the now prone beasts mouth, and rises for a moment into the air.

The image of a dark skinned man with red glowing eyes, and terrible tattoos forms for a moment, his expression one of livid anger...then hate...then fear. The image begins to dissipate just as he draws back his ethereal hands to begin a spell, then he dissolves into a cloud of dark smoke, and heads towards the base holding the sarcophagus, disappearing into a crack behind one of the stones.

Mirian gasps, and collapses falling against the body of Hakketh. Barnabus, Demetrio, and Septimilius gather their wits after the horrific battle with dog, covered in small bites and scratches from the melee, and rush to the woman's side. After a moment she comes to, with only a splitting headache to remind her of what just happened.

Suddenly the last torch goes out...but the room is not dark. Hakketh's corpse seems to be glowing. From his body rises a shining white ball of light. I hovers in the air a moment, and Barnabus takes the opportunity of holy light to light one of the spare torches. After a brief moment lingering in front of first Mirian, then Septimilius, the light moves towards the inert corpse of dog, and...well...enteres it. After a moment dog draws a shuddering breath, and rises unsteadily to his feet, shuffling forward to gently lick Mirian's boot.

From out of the darkness on the other side of the Dias comes a pitiful weak voice. "Where am I"? "Who are you, and what are we doing here"?

So the situation is... The combat is over. You think that the evil of Xul has been destroyed. There seems to be something concealed in the dias that Xul's body rested on. Hakketh is dead. Dog is alive again somehow. Otto is confused...

Barnabus continues his search around the dias, and finally is able to pry loose a brick, revealing a dark space behind it.

Take an advance and let me know what your actions are... we're not out of the woods (or crypts) yet.

"Mirian - I didn't know you could cast magic. That was - impressive."

As usual Mirian’s concerns foremost lies in projecting the image that she is in control, no matter what the circumstances. So she quickly dismisses any notion that her recent spell casting abilities were something out of the ordinary. ”I do what I can to inspire”, Mirian says and scratches the dog behind the ear. ”If I told you everything before hand it wouldn’t be as impressive.” She looks down at the body of Hakketh, remembering his opening statement. I wonder if I’ve just replaced Ikhtanabu with Hakketh, she thinks to herself.

Upon hearing the mumbling Otto Mirian rises to her feet and adorns another cunning smile. ”Ah, our fat patron is alive. You have no idea what we’ve went through to get you. You just have to endure a little bit longer. That opening looks intriguing” she says and points to the hole that Barnabus just uncovered.

Pull out more bricks! Who has torches by the way?

Keep in mind that these are the party's last two torches...

Demetrio and Mirian head towards the woozy Otto, and help him to his feet. He seems bruised and battered, but basically unharmed. "Why am I in a crypt in my nightshirt"? "Why is my neck so sore"? "I'm hungry"!

Barnabus digs into the opening in the crypt base and after brushing aside some cobwebs, dead insect husks, and living spiders he finds two sacks, one large, and one small. The large one has frost around the tied off opening, but appears to contain several large tomes. The second has several small objects in it that feel like pebbles. Do you wish to open the sacks, and if so in what order?

Dog steps to the entrance of the tunnel, looks out and growls low in his throat.

Free spirited pirate

Mirian looks at the two sacks with a raised eyebrow. ”This trip might actually prove to be worth it” she says. ”Check the sacks and get Otto ready to move. I’ll check what has the dog growling.” With that the pirate walks up to the entance (accepting the torch from Dementrio?) and carefully peers out into the tunnel (rapier in on hand, torch in the other).

How long do we expect the torches to last? And how long did it take us to get to the tomb? Since we did leave charcoal marks on the way here it should be easy to backtrack, right?

”Some oil would be really useful about now,” Septimilius says. He attempts to squeeze behind the mummy. Tripping it would be good too. He swings his mace into the back of the knee, hoping that will make the creature trip, or at least cause its knees to buckle. Does this thing have bones?

”Hey dog, bite its leg!”

Fighting: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 1

I'm definitely keeping a benny to soak some damage. It saved his life (or near enough) in an earlier combat. Can players use a benny to help another character? Like give some inspiration, motivation, for a bonus to a roll? Barnabus and a spirit roll in this case.

Round 1 Wrap
Demetrio Swings his staff with both hands, but it gets caught up in some bandages and wrapping, and his swing whiffs.

Mirian Opens her pouch, and empties her valuables all over the ground, surprising everyone in the room except for the Mummy. She then dashes over and grabs up the torch, wielding it before her like a weapon.

Round 2 Initiatives

Mirian 2C
Septimilius 8C
Barnabus 7H
Demetrio 9C
Mummy KS

So...

Mummy
Demetrio
Septimilius
Barnabus
Mirian.

Mirian> You can either defend or have time to go pick up and wield the torch. Septimilius> The Common Bond Edge allows you to give bennies to companions.

1d2 ⇒ 1 Mummy's attack choice.

Seeing his main target flee, and knowing it's not fast enough to catch her, the Mummy turns on the creature battering it's knee. Don't forget to roll for damage Septimilius for round 2...that is if you don't die :-).

1d8 ⇒ 4 Fighting
1d6 ⇒ 4 WD...sigh...

Demetrio is up...

Septimilius has already acted this round, but needs to roll damage.

Barnabus> You can make a spirit roll to become unshaken. A success means your unshaken, but can take no actions this round. A raise means you can act normally. Spending a benny will allow you to act as though you have a raise.

You must also overcome your fear with a Spirit roll. Note that all these rolls can explode, and do get the wild dice. NOTE: Don't forget to use your bennies to re-roll if wanted.

Mirian> A torch is an improvised weapon, so it is (-1) to both your fighting and your parry if used that way. On the bright side it does 1d6 damage +2 fire damage, and since this is the Mummy's weakness it does an additional +4 damage for a total of +6. It also might catch fire.

Round 2

Cowering in the corner, Barnabas peeks out between his fingers at the hideous monstrosity fighting his companions.

"Come on, Barnabas, they're out there fighting for their lives and here you are cowering like a bug. Get up! Get up!" he whispers to himself

Spirit to become unshaken 1d8 ⇒ 3
Wild 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 Ace! Unshaken and a Raise!

Leaping up, Barnabas flinches as the mummy whirls around. Gulping, he attempts to steel his nerves to confront this undead menace.

Spirit to overcome fear 1d8 ⇒ 7
Wild 1d6 ⇒ 5

Gritting his teeth, Barnabas sways for a moment then wills himself to act. Whipping his sword free he leaps ahead and cleaves at the mummy's arm.

Fighting 1d10 ⇒ 7
Wild 1d6 ⇒ 3

Damage, if a hit 1d5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + (3) = 5

Free spirited pirate

Initiative: two of clubs
Surprise round
Parry: 8, Toughness: 6 (1)
Effects: parry

I think the mummy get’s a free attack when I leave its immediate area to dash for the torch. That’s why I wanted to take the defend action.

A wide smile stretches across Mirian’s face when she notices that the mummy continues to fight, oblivious to the treasure on the floor. She had thought robbing the tomb had risen the creature, but this meant that she would get to keep the jewels gathered. All she had to do was overcome the creature. Mirian grabs the torch and moves to engage the undead.

Fighting roll: 1d10 - 1 - 2 + 3 ⇒ (9) - 1 - 2 + 3 = 9 (-1 improvised weapon, -2 MAP, +3 gang up bonus)
Wild die: 1d6 - 1 - 2 + 3 ⇒ (5) - 1 - 2 + 3 = 5 (-1 improvised weapon, -2 MAP, +3 gang up bonus)
Damage roll: 2d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 + 4 = 13 (+2 fire damage, +4 mummy weakness against fire)

Do I still get the -1 to parry if I only use my rapier to defend myself?

Well you hit...but not enough damage to hurt him. Where did the (d5) come from? If that's a typo feel free to re-roll.

Waiting on Demetrio, then we'll move on to Round 3. I'll wait for him before doing the summary. Mirian> You are fortunate that the Mummy doesn't have opportunity attacks available to him :-). Also, just having an unfamiliar weapon in a hand used to normally defend yourself would still result in a -1. He might attack you from the torch hand side, which you're not familiar with defending yourself from.
