Mirian wakes up rested from an uninterrupted sleep. As she dresses she realizes that she’s all but given up on her patron, her focus now shifted to the temple and what might lie inside. Decending the stairs of the Dirty Dog Inn she paints a mental picture of all the treasures hidden inside, ready for the taking. ”So what do you think we’ll find inside?” she asks Hakketh and keeps the conversation going all the way to the Square of the Peacock.

”So that’s your idea of a procession?” Mirian says with a coy smile as two monks come into the square. ”We could have taken them easily. Come, we should try and knock one of the groups out.”

You duck behind a shuttered booth advertising "Exotic Bowel Purges from the Jungles of Kesh". and watches two skull masked priests, and an acolyte escort a cart with a body into the square. The cart enters the temple, and the doors close once again. The square now seems completely deserted upon first glance. As you peer into the square nothing but the scattered remains of debris blowing greets your eyes. You hear the approach of another cart from across the square.

You see a lone figure emerge from the alley that the cart came down, and peer into the courtyard.

Septimilius sees the man across the square, vaguely resembling the description given by Temugai. He continues to scan the courtyard, wondering if he should give a bird call, using a bird from Aquilonia. But if someone else did recognize it as a foreign bird, suspicions might be raised. Or he could try to stick to the shadows, quietly get to the others hired by Otto and Turel.

After considering how to approach them for a few more moments, he decides to sneak through the courtyard, mace ready to swing.

When he gets closer, he whispers, ”Pssssst, pssssst. Temugai sent me.”

Mirian reaches for her weapons as she sees the man approach. One hand on the hilt of the rapier by her side and one on the dagger strapped to the belt on her back. She relaxes her grip when the stranger mentions Temugai, but keeps one hand behind her back hoovering around the hilt of her dagger.

"Temugai? Didn't he have the courage to hobble here himself?", she whispers with a wry smile. "What do you want? And get out of sight! You're alerting the whole square, by Bel"

”I know how to sneak. If it makes you feel better,” he says and presses himself against the nearest wall. ”You’re Mirian and Hakketh, right? Turel promised me a reward if I help save Otto. My name’s Septimilius.”

Turel is Otto’s brother in case you don’t know.

Free spirited pirate

Was Turel the one who was supposed to arrive with our payment, or was it Otto's cousin who's bringing the money?

Mirian looks Septimilius up and down. She nods her head and lifts her tricorn hat in a greeting. "Indeed I am. There is a rewards out for Otto now? We were only going to save him to get our payment, but it seems that I have some negotiating to do with Turel when we get his brother back."

Current map The Gazebo God Infinity........

I guess I need to work on my descriptions, if I'm not using maps or pictures. Envision the square as a gigantic...well square. There is a broad avenue leading into the square from the streets, but otherwise it's like a gigantic courtyard, with the various buildings butting up against one another, leaving only the main thoroughfare, and several small allies. There technically is no temple wall to climb, as it abuts two other buildings, but to move the game along, I'll install a small gated alleyway between the Temple, and the clothing mannequin manufacturer to it's immediate right.

1d6 ⇒ 3 Smarts (Group roll)

Hakketh waits until the courtyard is cleared, before the other approaching cart appears, and calls upon his dark arts. A sudden image of a dark indistinct figure suddenly appears at the locked gate of the access alley beside the temple, It's obviously not a real experienced burglar, as the banging of the gate alerts the three guards on duty at the gate of the temple. They start, and stare in that direction, but when they look closer the image has disappeared. After a bit of discussion one of the guards, begins walking to the gate to investigate the incident.

Note that Confusion is an instant effect so it just flashes in and creates...well...confusion. Also, to affect the additional two guards, the spell will cost (3) Power points.

1d6 - 4 ⇒ (5) - 4 = 1 Guard #1 Spirit roll
1d6 - 4 ⇒ (6) - 4 = 2 Guard #2 Spirit roll
1d6 - 4 ⇒ (5) - 4 = 1 Guard #3 Spirit roll

Guard #2
"What was that"? "Who is there"? He then looks at the two junior guards, who have taken up their spears, and look frightfully all around them. "Bah". "It is nothing, but I'll investigate since you're so sure that you saw something".

Guard two walks towards the gate, while the other two stare after him, sure that he's going to be killed at any moment.

The guards are all distracted at the moment, and at -2 to their notice rolls. Two of them are also shaken. NOTE: I'm going to let the other two guards roll a spirit roll each round, with the effect of the confusion one less each round...ie Round 1 @ -3, Round 2 @ -2 etc.

From the sounds of the approaching cart, you probably have 3-6 rounds before the cart enters the courtyard.

Probably just me misremembering things

Mirian seems more annoyed with the timing of the spell, than the magic itself, as she would have preferred to see if the monks could be used for infiltration. Though she quickly finds herself in the new situation. She gives Septimus a quick shake of her head and drives her fist into her palm before pointing to the guard, inviting the Septimus to knock out the guard rather than brain him with the mace.

[dice=Fighting]1d8
[dice=Unarmed damage if successful]1d8

OK. A little help with the dice mechanics on this one. For every action there is a cumulative -2 penalty to all actions. Moving is one action, and the attack is another for a -2 to each. Since you are a wildcard character however, you get to roll a wild die (1d6) in addition to your normal die, and take the highest score. Both can also explode. Damage dice can also explode, but you don't roll a Wild Card die for damage. So your correct roll on this one would have been 1d8 - 2 for the attack, 1d6 - 2 for the Wild die, taking the higher adjusted total, then 1d8 for the damage. If you were attempting a stealth roll as well there would be additional penalties added in as well as the additional -2 for another action. Probably not possible in this situation.

In addition there are two guards staring right at the guy you're getting ready to attack, who would surely warn him of your approach, without a heck of a stealth roll. You guys are standing about 30' away from the temple, and 50' away from the guard at the gate. This is a very difficult situation to accomplish without giving your presence away. I'll allow you to rethink your actions, and in fact, since this is PbP, and actions can vary depending upon others actions, I'll let you guys re-do this approach completely if you'd like...with expenditure of a benny that is. Nothing's free in the Savage World of Conan. :-)

Aquilonian Bounty Hunter, 5 Bennies/ Pace: 6, Parry: 8, Toughness: 9(2), Charisma: 1 0 Wound

Thanks for the clarification regarding the rolls and the situation. I thought two of the guards were under the effects of the illusion. I see I misread the “shaken” condition as well as the −2 to notice rolls.

Yeah, Septimilius would not attack the guard if two others were clearly watching, even with a −2 notice roll.

I like the idea of knocking out another cart group and pretending to enter as priests (I think Miriam suggested this) or trying to climb another building in the square and jumping the narrow alley between the clothing mannequin manufacturer and the temple. As for spending a bennie, I’ll do that if Miriam and Hakketh want to “reset” the situation.

If we are going to “play on” from here, Septimilius will use his sling to attack one of the two guards staring at the guard heading to the gate. Hakketh is your dog with you?

Free spirited pirate

You can move and take an action for free. Each action after that brings a cumulative penalty of -2 to each action taken that round*

*:

If you decide to take two actions (like intimidate and then attack) both will have a -2 penalty
If you decide to take three actions (like a running, an agility trick and then an attack) all three actions will have a -4 penalty
etc.

I think it's safe to say that this plan won't work, unless we beat up the guards which risks drawing alot of attention. They're still equipped with dogs, right? I'll spend the benny to redo Septimilius attacking the guard.

Mirian looks at the aftermath of the illusion Hakketh created. "Not quite the distraction I had in mind. I thought it would be ... bigger", she whispers. "Want to try and knock out a corpse cart and infiltrate the temple as priests?"

So, how do we do this? Go on a hunt for the priests or wait at the square and hope that we can hear them coming, set up an ambush and knock them out (preferably with a confusion (that spell can shake people, right?) and then knock them out). It only seems to be two priests per cart (so far)?

Aquilonian Bounty Hunter, 5 Bennies/ Pace: 6, Parry: 8, Toughness: 9(2), Charisma: 1 0 Wound

What time of the night is it? If it’s not too late I say an ambush would be a good tactic.

Current map The Gazebo God Infinity........

It is maybe 30-minutes after sunset. You know that the procedure is that for the first 2-3 hours after sunset, various groups of priests bring in the dead. Then nothing happens for a couple of hours...in fact even the guards go into the locked tight temple. Then right at Midnight the whole procession leaves the temple, with the previous nights work, and heads towards the catacombs, and crypts to put the recently dead to rest.

Also, keep in mind that Otto apparently wandered off on his own, and there is no evidence that he even went to the temple at all.

Agility d6 Smarts d10 Spirit d6 Strength d6 Vigor d6 Charisma 0 Benny 3 (+1 gray) Pace 6 Parry 5 Toughness 8 (with armor) Spellcraft d10 Knowledge Arcane d6 Knowledge Set d4 Fighting d6 Notice d8 Persuasion d6 Survival d8

I have a strong feeling that we are in the wrong spot. We need to get into the crypts to find fat Otto.

Free spirited pirate

Isn't the temple a way into the crypts?
Asking around we didn't find a better lead than the priests, and by now Mirian is almost as curious as to what can be found inside the temple (and if I understand it correctly the catacombs underneath) as she is to find Otto.

"Your trick wasn't enough to get us past the guards, but it should be enough startle the priests. That should get me and Septimilius enough time to knock them out. Then we hide them somewhere, steal their robes and move past the guards with the cart. You two will probably look more convincing in uniform, so I'll hide in the cart. Sounds good to everyone?" Mirian supresses a shiver and the surge of disgust at hiding in the cart along with all the bodies, but the promise of great wealth inside the temple made it worth it. Why else would it be guarded so zealously?

Current map The Gazebo God Infinity........

To reiterate once again, I'll post from an earlier post..."You are in a crowded plaza, around noon, with hundreds of people doing all kinds of things, all around you. They tend to shy away from the temple, so you guys are kind of being stared at for being there anyway. The entrance to the catacombs is on the north end of the plaza, and the temple is on the east side of the plaza about 150' from the catacombs entrance.

The priests leave every night from the temple, cross the square, and head into the catacombs.

The first set of priests had already entered the temple, when the spell which is "instantaneous" went off. It affected 2 of the 3 guards. They are not inactive, but shaken so they can still see you. They will also make spirit rolls every round to recover from the effect. There are still three guard dogs as well, that are currently chained beside the door of the temple.

If you wish to "ambush" one of the corpse carts it might be wise to do so before they enter the courtyard and are in view of the guards.

”A good plan Miriam,” he whispers. ”Let’s leave this square and find a cart to ‘borrow.’”

When Hakketh mentions “share of the treasure” Septimilius raises his eyebrows in surprise. ”What’s so special about this dagger?” he asks.

Free spirited pirate

Woops, I totally missed that the temple and catacombs were two seperate places. Is there anything guarding the entrance to the catacombs? Why didn't we go there to begin with? :)

Distracted by the mystery of the temple Mirian had lost focus on the task at hand. Guards ment that something had to be guarded. Temples contained wealth, or at least so she'd been told. With her fund running thin that was an alluring thought.

Hakketh's offer to give up his share brings Mirian back to the task at hand. "I'm listening", Mirian says with a smile.

And yes, any ambush on the priests would go down outside of the square.

Current map The Gazebo God Infinity........

There are a few official entrances to the Catacombs in the city, all securely locked. There are also reputed to be several more "un-official" entrances.

The second group of priests makes it into the courtyard, before the group can react. You do here some sounds of wagon wheels, and the barking of strays from an alley that sits about midway between the temple and the catacombs.

I'm assuming that the group wishes to hide and ambush the priests with their grisly contents. It that correct? If so since your team is the "Active" group, I'll need stealth rolls from each of you. In this instance since you have a bit of time to set yourselves up, I'll give the rolls a (+2 for darkness, and a +2 for medium cover).

Remember if you don't have a skill you can still make a roll of 1d4-2 plus your Wild Die (WD) of 1d6-2, as an unskilled check, and add the above modifiers.

As the party waits hidden in various door openings, and behind a fountain, the group of acolytes comes into view. Once again, the cart is led by two acolytes, chanting, and swinging holy water censures, and a younger acolyte, this time a young girl, swatting at the circling carrion birds, and insects with a gilded rod. They seem to be unarmed except for ceremonial daggers at their waists.

I'm assuming the party is attacking to stun, not to kill? If so I need the stealth rolls, then the priests will make their notice rolls, with the target being your parties lowest stealth roll total

Free spirited pirate

I'll give Hakketh an opportunity to talk us out of the ambush if we want to try and get into the catacombs instead, otherwise Mirian is ready to ambush!

"Here they come. Good luck, don't disappoint me", Mirian says and flashes a smile before deftly sneaking into position for the ambush. Once there she starts to draw up plans for what she might do with her share of the substantial treasure contained within the temple walls.

Are they all wearing similar robes?

OK...here's the ruling. I don't see anything in the rules about substituting Non-lethal for lethal on spells. If your trapping was fire or ice I would rule that nearly impossible. Since you've got light however, I could see how it would be set to stun. In this case I'll allow you to change it to non-lethal with the expenditure of a bennie. Another way to accomplish this would be to score a raise on your spellcasting roll...but since you'd have to spend a bennie to roll that over, this is the sure way. Let's just assume going forward that any "special" effects on a spell require a raise on the spellcasting roll.

On another note, in this world it's possible that nobody would ever find out who did it if you killed the priests, and the city guard would probably not get involved unless it became an outbreak......Oh probably some deranged fool looking to fill his pockets with the temple's riches...

Things went crazy when I tried to post this as a reply, so here it is in a new thread.

Just to clarify a few "rules" things. First, since you guys had "the Drop" on the priests you're +4 to both tests, and damage, so you adjusted totals would be 21, but you must subtract one for doing non-lethal damage instead of lethal for an adjusted total of 20. This is against their Parry score of 4, Toughness 5 so a hit with 4-raises!!!. You can only do one extra dice of damage, no matter the number of raises, so I'll allow you some poetic license to describe the blow. If I like it, you'll get a bennie for this awesome blow.

For Damage you get an extra 1d6 for the raise on your combat roll. I'll roll it for you this time in order to move things along.

1d6 ⇒ 5 Bonus Damage

So your damage total is 5 + 5 + 4 or a total of 15, which is a success with two raises. This guy won't be waking up for some time.

As the man holding the lead tries to bring it under control, Septimilius charges forward bringing his clasped hands together on the neck of his assailant, driving his forehead into the forehead of the ox, resulting in unconsciousness for the priest, and complicating the control of the ox.

Mirian has yet to act, so we'll see how she adds to this madcap scene, before completely summarizing.

At the moment before Mirian's action we have two unconscious priests, a panicked (Maybe...depending upon actions) acolyte, and an enraged, snorting out of control ox, rearing, stamping, and jostling it's precious cargo of corpses.

Wierd, I was positive that I posted my action yesterday. Had it typed up and everything.

Round 1, sixth of clubs
Parry: 8, Toughness: 6 (1)
Effects:

Mirian emerges from the shadows of her hiding place with a confident smile. ”Remain calm and nothing shall happen to you. We are not here for you”, she says in a calm and confidence-inspiring tone.

If a persuade roll is needed
Persuade roll: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 (+5 charisma)
Wild die: 3d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 6, 1) + 5 = 18 (+2d6 ace, +5 charisma)

The acolyte was the woman, right?

If not:

Mirian emerges from hiding as the cart comes close. She darts towards the acolyte and throws a blow to the head with the hilt of her rapier, aiming to knock the him unconscious.

Attack die: 1d10 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 4 = 4 (+4 the drop, -4 head shot)
Wild die: 1d6 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 4 = 2 (+4 the drop, -4 head shot)
Damage: 2d6 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (6, 5) + 4 + 4 = 19 (+1d6 ace, +4 the drop, +4 head shot)
Possibly another +2 for striking an unarmed defender if the priest isn’t carrying anything

On another note, in this world it's possible that nobody would ever find out who did it if you killed the priests, and the city guard would probably not get involved unless it became an outbreak......Oh probably some deranged fool looking to fill his pockets with the temple's riches...

It isn't concern of the city guard that would keep Mirian from trying to kill the priests. It just seems a waste to her to kill someone without a really good reason.

So to add to the flavor text, Mirian appears out of the darkness, appearing for all the world like a vessel of a god to the young girls light burned eyes. She falls to her knees, prostate, and praying to you for forgiveness and mercy.

So we have two down and out priests, one sobbing, half blind, out of control Acolyte, one raging ox getting ready to bolt off into the distance with it's grisly cargo, and one incense burner threatening to catch fire to the pile of debris it landed in...Actions???

H, Enemy (Including Ox and fire), M, And S.

Notice

Spoiler:

The man who was leading the ox has his hand still tangled in the oxens lead rope.

Round 2, sixth of clubs
Parry: 8, Toughness: 6 (1)
Effects:

Notice check: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Wild die: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Ignoring the acolyte for the time being Mirian goes to stop the fire waiting to happen by the incense burner, grabbing for the container of burning incense before it sets the debris pile ablaze. ”Get that beast under control! We need it”, she yells.

Agility roll?
Agility roll: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Wild die: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Aquilonian Bounty Hunter, 5 Bennies/ Pace: 6, Parry: 8, Toughness: 9(2), Charisma: 1 0 Wound

Thanks for the chance to earn a bennie!
Septimilius’ goal wasn’t to kill, or maim, just render the man unconscious. As a bounty hunter, he knew clubbing a man in the back of the head or neck is an effective means to do just that. If not the first time, it typically dazed a person enough so that hitting him again was easier. A friend once said his hands were like brass maces.

When he hit the priest, he knew he connected well. The priest let out a small groan and fell to the side, the force of the punch slamming his head against the ox. The man was out like a candle flame. Septimilius was lucky.

The priest was lucky too. He could have been gored.

Round 2

”Shhhhhh, shhhh, shhhhh,” Septimilius soothed, trying to grab the reins to control the ox. ”Easy, easy. Settle ox. Settle,” he repeated in a calming voice despite the ox being moments away from bolting.

Agility roll: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Hakketh has the beast master edge...how's that for foresight :-)

Hakketh walks up to the ox making soft clucking sounds. "Who's a good oxen? Who's a good oxen? You are, aren't you?" He then reaches out and softly pats the ox on top of its head.

Current map The Gazebo God Infinity........

Mirian rushes forward to put out the smoldering flame, and while she takes a moment to do so the young acolyte takes that distraction to run as fast as she can down the alley, shedding her robes, mask, and staff as she goes. Probably done with this whole dangerous "priestly" thing.

Septimilius, and Hakketh approach the raging ox, carefully, Sept using his quickness, and Hakketh his way with animals.

Sept is able to stay clear of the animals tossing horns, and hooves...Still need to make a Notice roll for spoiler above.

Hak approaches the animal speaking gently. Technically the Beastmaster edge is only for an animal companion, but I like it so I'll let you make a Spirit roll to achieve the following. NOTE: You could make this a "cooperative" roll with Sept's assistance if you'd like.

Success

Spoiler:

You are able to keep the Ox from bolting. It will be an dramatic task with a time limit of 3 minuets before drawing attention.

Raise
Spoiler:

The animal trusts you completely, and is not aware that you tried to blind it a moment ago :-)
