Zariya has heard legends of past trauma causing spirits to stay in an area and affect people based on the nature of the trauma. The phenomenon is known as a haunt.


What do I know of haunts? Is there any way to damage or get rid of it? If it's not included in the result of the knowledge check then my character wouldn't know it. Hopefully 23 is enough to know something...


There are three ways you know to get rid of haunts.

1) Like a ghost, a haunt exists because of a specific event. If you find out how to appease the haunt, then it is permanently destroyed.

2.)Haunts can be disrupted when they first manifest by channeling positive energy (cure spells, etc), or by holy water, but it has to be done during that round of first manifestation. This will only disrupt the haunt until it manifests after a specific length of time. They can also be disrupted by haunt siphons, which act as a 3d6 positive energy attack when thrown at the haunt (400 gp, 1 use), and then act as 1d6 negative energy grenades after absorbing the haunt.

3) Don't come near one and it doesn't hurt you.


Is it too late to channel energy now? Did the knowledge roll give me any hits of how to go about finding how to put it to rest?

Varisia skids to a stop realizing he has run out into the Necropolis alone.

The source of the fear causing his heart to pound in his chest shifts and the archaeologist begins running back towards the estate and the rest of his group.

If we were quick enough, we could have channeled positive energy to stop it, but now that it has already had it's effect, it's too late. Though it doesn't look like it'll harm us, just be scary. There might be a way to put it to rest permanently by somehow resolving what happened here in the first place. I don't know what we would have to do for that though." Zariya practically yells out as the party is scattered all over the place.

Varisia slows as he approaches the gates. He veers off to one side and presses himself against the wall. Varisia slides towards the gate and cautiously peers into the courtyard.

Jandar-Ki moves back towards the center gate to make sure the rest of his companions are ok (and learning about the explanation) while observing from the high wall, before moving to the wall on the opposite side to continue scouting.

"Should we venture further, perhaps?" Zohreh suggests. "Maybe there will be clues inside on how to lay these spirits to rest."


Varisia sees nothing but an empty courtyard. As Jandar-Kai moves back over, he sees what appears to be another courtyard that looks like this

A spacious yard fills the compound east of the house. To the
east, several small stone outbuildings have been built right
into the compound's outer wall. A well stands between two
of these outbuildings, opposite a stone table and benches
that sit in the shadow of the house. To the west, two sets of
steps, both flanked by columns, lead up to doors into the
main house. To the northwest, an open doorway leads into
an extension of the house, next to a small structure with a
domed roof.

Varisia edges around the corner and rejoins his companions. His eyes dart about, waiting for the screaming horde to come out of every door and around every corner.

'What in the Hells was that? Where'd they all go?' The archaeologist does his best to keep his voice steady.

Heh. Nenet actually gets a +8 against fear effects, via Wati Native, as psychics are out of commission when a-scurred. Next time!

Zohreh nods. "We could throw a light down the well on the way out. Perhaps by then, we will have resolved the haunt, and it will be harmless."

Fionn stays silent, keeping an arrow resting lightly on his bow. He begins to scan the building before them frowning in thought. 'Erastil, if you can hear me, please don't let me die in here. And if I do, at least let me stay that way and not come back as some form of undead. Thanks!'

With that he takes a slow, cautious step, towards the main door of the mansion, keeping his eyes peeled and his ears sharp.

Thw well isn't in the main courtyard you're facing that Fionnid went up to, btw. It's off to the east and there is another courtyard off to the west. The one the party ran from is in front of the courtyard. Still working on maps.

Fionnid sees no tracks or anything abnormal about the front door.


Zariya turns towards Varisia with a relived look on her face. "Gald to have you back Varisia. As I just said, That was a phenomenon called a haunt. It happens cause of some great trauma. If we were quick enough, we could have channeled positive energy to stop it, sadly I did not think of it in time. If we encounter something similar I'll try to do it though. It'll keep reappearing unless we find a way to permanently put it to rest. Not sure how often or what might put it to rest though. Anyway, should we look around out there or go in? I suggest we go in, though we should get Jardar-Ki with us."

She looks over to the wall. "Hoi, Jardar-Ki, come down here!"

After he rejoins the rest the princess will ask him out. "Did you see anything interesting up there? I suggest we go inside now."

Just curious, but do we have a map up yet?

"I'll draw the layout of what I see." Jandar-Ki finds a stick and starts diagramming in the sand as he motions for the group to huddle around. "To the east, there's a large courtyard with several small stone outbuildings built against the outer wall. Those are located here, here, and here. A well and a stone table fill the yard. Entrances to the main building are here and here," striking the sand as the twig breaks. Shrugging, he scrounges for another before finishing the diagram, "To the northwest, an open doorway leads into
an extension of the house, next to a small structure with a
domed roof."


Yah I found a blank one in the map collection. Still trying to figure out how to cut it out of the multi-page PDF though without access to Adobe Illustrator.

If you can't use the capture button (camera icon), then you could try pressing Print Screen on your keyboard and pasting it into an image program and cropping.

'I'll focus my efforts on trying to figure out exactly what went on here. Maybe we'll find some records of the estates last days inside that will help us put this in perspective.' Varisia still eyes every shadow and corner suspiciously.

The archaeologist watches as Jandar-Ki lays out the compound and nods along as the area is described. He points a toe towards the smaller outbuildings. 'Maybe we should check those out before going inside?'

"Checking the outbuildings seems like a fine approach," says Zohreh. "You are quicker to act than I am, Zariya, so I will leave you the channeling if we find another haunt." She carefully steps over to the gate to the west courtyard to listen for any stirrings.

Varisia cautiosly makes his way to the most South Eastern out-building and checks around the door before exploring the room properly.

@stormcrow27 - Can you open permissions to the party for the map? This way we can copy/paste our avatar images as tokens and move them around for combat. I'm not sure if you want to move the party images to show the initial setup either.

http://www.rptools.net/toolbox/token-tool/ is a nice tool to put a border around any image you grab online if you want to create markers for the monsters as well.

From where you are at Fionnid, there is a 10 ft wall blocking your line of site. If you move southeast near the now open door and then go east another 10 with a double move of 50, you'll be able to see the two death dogs and Varisia staring them down with his steely eyed gaze and Harrison Ford stubble.

Mind changing the file type to Google Drawing (From Google Drive -> New -> More -> Google Drawing. That should bring up the paint-like tool to paste images over it (allowing for the avatars to be overlayed).

The dog deftly leaps over your whip attack (CMD 21 vs trip. 4 feet helps with stability). Its companion moves forward 10 feet (large size, but normal 5 ft reach) and bites once at you. Roll for attack of opportunity, Varisia.

The dog's snapping jaws barely miss you.
