Skull & Shackles (for those like me who can't wait)

Game Master Lost Gamer

Title says it all.

Well I am defiantly going to run the Skull and Shackles AP when it comes out as a pbp.

And before my boredom causes me to start something else I though a little recruitment/maybe a prelude encounter or game might not go amiss. Looking about I found a few PFS modules (due to goggling) with a tie to docks or boating theme that may just fit in.

So I wish to propose a recruitment for the Skull & Shackles AP - and we may play something short that leads up to it. My normal Character gene rules:

Character Gene:

- Ability Scores: point buy using 20pts.
- Races: Any race from CORE + aasimar, tiefling, tengu, fetchling, and undine(will be known as mermen)
- Classes: Any from available sources.
- Skills and Feats: Any available from sources.
- Traits: Chose one trait from sources available and one from the player's guide. (PG is not out yet so sorry only one trait to start)
- Hero Points: Yes. I will try these rules for this.
- Equipment: Maximum starting gold for class.
- Hit Points: Standard (Max at 1st lvl and will use house rule after that.)

Sources

- Pathfinder CORE
- Pathfinder Chronicles - Campaign Setting (I have the older book.)
- Advance Player's Guide
- Ultimate Magic
- Ultimate Combat
- Adventure's Armory
- Pahfinder SRD third party material only by GM approval

I wish to make a group of four players with the addition of an NPC. As before if I get enough players to make two groups of four I will do so.

I will leave recruitment open one week and bump this as necessary.

Lastly I will be using Obsidian Portal as a reference site and a place I wish for you to keep your characters up to date. I like to use the character profiles here as a status profile. It will have current items on you, magical effects, diseases, etc. And will change constantly. The OP character would be like your main character sheet and be updated for level ups and tracking of all items not just the ones you are currently carrying.

Thanks for reading - Happy Gaming to all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am just dotting for now. I am in two PbP's already, and I don't want to be greedy. If one of the other two dies out I might come back though if you still have slots open at that time.

Yeah me too. Was following a Faerun game recruiting thread but the master has disappeared.
Not that i haven't other games, so for now just dotting and see.

I'd be interested in this. I have a character that wasn't selected for a Serpent's Skull recruitment long ago. I've adjusted his background to omit the experience in the Shackles (sounds like he may play it out in this game), and I'll look into making mechanical adjustments considering your expanded source list if selected.

Kale Moore
Fighter

Background:
Kale used to think he was destined for something greater. Now he knows that everyone thinks that when they're young and stupid. He didn't even want that much. Just didn't want to spend his life on the docks like his father. And he'd done it, too. Saved up the money to start the grocery he'd always wanted. But then Arden got sick. Nobody could help his only child, but they were happy to try everything and charge him for it. After Arden passed, Danae couldn't take it and began her shameful carousing. The shop was long closed, and the whispering and snickering behind his back as Danae made her rounds made working on the dock more difficult every day. Kale has little reason to stay here now, if an opportunity arose to leave this behind.

Definitely interested, Lost Gamer. Seeing as this character did not enjoy the mines of z, I present her for your consideration:
Jekaterina Miaan
Oracle

Background:

Erin lived all of her life inland, a bondswoman in a small Varisian outpost. Her family and husband all fell sick to a wasting disease, and one by one she watched them die, refused aid by petty functionaries of the village for their low status. Lover and husband of thirty years, grown children, small grandchildren. Her own sickness was a trial not met by death, but by transformation. A Shoanti wise-woman undertook the grave task of counseling Erin's spirit as it wrestled with grief, pain and crazed exultation. Finally Erin emerged as an Oracle of the Bones, with the wasting curse. Old to be wandering the lands of Golarion, she nevertheless aims to alleviate her suffering and that of any who she finds beset by plague or persecution. Perhaps the sea air might be conducive to health and renewal...?

Dotting for now, what sort of character would you like to see for this campaign?

I am defiantly interested. Fortunately I'm not in any pbp games at the moment.

I'd be willing to play any type of character/class/etc depending on the needs of the game. Personally I'd lean more towards a gunslinger or a witch/sea witch. I think both would be appropriate for a pirate themed game.

Shadow Lodge

Thanks for the dotting, and keeping us up in the front of the list.

Let me see...

jamie noone:
An excellent start to a character for this. Although I have only read what everyone else has read about the modules since they aren't out, your character might have that "Who cares?" "Why try?" attitude after losing so much. He may even be resigned to his fate as a galley slave to start and then as the game progresses move on to change. Character development always an A+ in my book.

Oceanshieldwolf:
A fine background to account for ones new abilities. Please make preparations to play your character she is very high on the accepted list.

Pixel Cube: An excellent question. A character type for mutiny, ship sailing, and pirate nere' do well. I don't know much about the module but in the end I believe you become part of the crew of your own ship. So any character made to help with ship operations in a unique way, Wizard-Engineer, Ranger- Powder Monkey (Is cannon-manning a combat style?), Summoner- Crows Nest Lookout (Look out for the monsters he places right on the middle of the enemy deck.)

Kcinlive: You could wait till we have a party make up started going, but don't forget the DM-PC. I will create a PC to use as a full time NPC for filling a needed role and to help with pushing along the game as needed.

I am interested, only i wanted to see how that other recruitment closed.
In case, i'ld play arcane casters of some sort.

Shadow Lodge

Dotting for possible Rogue Pirate or Swashbuckler type.

Well, first of all, I think it would be fantastic to get to play with OSW. We've been working for so long together now, it might be nice to get some, you know, relaxation time in. :p

I'd love to consider an Arcane Caster myself, but I need to know how you feel about custom spell research before I make a decision on sorcerer or wizard. Been a LONG time since I played an Evoker. I was considering actually reprising the role of Bigby.

Shadow Lodge

No prob there Gandal I understand about having characters out there and waiting. It is probably why I am starting this up to tell the truth.

Will put you on the list Balodek - just note this is changeable I'm just trying to keep up with it as we go.

It's why we are all here Purplefixer for some relaxing fun. I will keep you and Oceanshieldwolf (I don't know them well enough for nicknames yet) in mind for the same group as it looks like we might get more than the eight.

Note on custom spells: Never done so myself and don't think I have allowed it to date. And that may be a plus for you as I like to expanded my RP experience.

You say you wish to reprise the Bigby role which means a bunch of spells with your name before them correct? We could do that and still keep the spells that are in all the sources, which are a ton.

"Envoker's name here" Ray of Sun (just scorching ray)
"Envoker's name here" Cabin (tiny hut)

The question is do you want the notoriety or do you wish to make different spells all together?

I already play a pirate in a all-goblin campaign. I think I will wait for more details about the AP before submitting my character, still interested though.

I am looking for a game. I'm in.....one I think. The other campaigns I am in are near death and not really going anywhere and I crave consistent play. So I have a Monk with both the Flowing monk and Tetori archetypes. He is a Tian Human named Akisame Koetsuji. He is a philosopher and all around do gooder. Smart and wise and talented in the art of "handling" opponents. I have been wanting to run this dude forever but I can't find a campaign to fit him in. I hope to get him in this one.

Shadow Lodge

Then Pixel Cube I wouldn't play any character that is sea worthy (to start) make an Urban character that would be a "fish out of water" on the water. And as the game progresses he will come into his own (or drown, :P)

Welcome Shanosuke I'm sure we can fit you in somewhere. I not asking for to much of a character right up. The gene is for you to play with before and after selection. Throw in a background, some motivations here, so as to put your character in the running.

My elven girl magus is boring herself to death....think i'll just copy-paste her sheet in another alias, level her down to 1 and use her (i love warrior mages and since i'm not the only one interested in arcane caster more the better for me and purplefixer)

@lost gamer: okay, will stat up and make alias.
@purplefixer: relaxation! Yep, would be good to play instead of work! Look forward to it. :^}

Ok, how about an halfling alchemist-bomb specialist I have ready then? I made it with a Bellflower Network campaign in mind, a sort of terrorist/fighter for the freedom of the enslaved halfling, but maybe he will find a proper place here. The idea that he was a Cheliax slave still stands, but maybe with piracy he will find a way to free his halfling brothers... I don't know, let's wait for the AP to come out.

By the way, when this is actually going to start? When does the first Skull & Shackles comes out?

Okay, I will put together some character fluff for you. Not sure where this campaign is taking place. Is there a link to some info site?

Ok, dotting for interest....

I have a crazy idea for an Elan Soulknife.

As a bit of character background, all he remembers of his life is waking on an alter about to be sacrificed. Without thinking about it, he lashed out with a Mind Blade and fought free. He fled to the streets, and worked various places while he tried to remember exactly what happened to him and why some other Elan are pursuing him.

Would something like that work? Also, if so would the Dreamscarred Press' playtest for Psionics Expanded be allowed? :)

If not, I have a couple of other ideas... :)

I was /literally/ talking about Bigby. A Hand Wizard. Grasping Hand, Interposing Hand, Forceful Fist, Crushing Grip, and then possibly some completely new spells. Helping Hand, Hand Hold, Hidden Hands, Manifold Manipulators, Additional Arms, Greasy Palm, Hurtful Handshake, and possibly more. Can grumble about guys like Mord, with his fixation on blades. What wields blades? That's right! HANDS! Mord was always a strictly stay-at-home wizard. Shut-in. Afraid to get his HANDS dirty!

A properly thematic wizard with a versatile and interesting line of spells, and maybe some new stuff to try out. Last time I did custom spell research in a (home) campaign, I came up with nine spells, and only ever got to cast two, one of them twice, and their effects were never actually of any use. -.- At least they weren't overpowered.

The spellbook is actually already up on the forum here at Paizo. In the homebrew section.

But yeah. This game? I'm thinking "Middle Aged Research Wizard gets tired of staying at home and doing theoretical work. Post graduate wizarding requires adventure! Excitement! And a footbath for my bunyon! After studying the many greats, the only thing left to do is join the masters. And so I christen this spell... Bigby's Fearsome Fingersnap!"

(Compare: Chill Touch)
Bigby's Fearsome Fingersnap
School Evocation; Level Sorcerer/Wizard 1
Casting Time Standard action
Components S, F (a supple leather glove)
Range touch
Target creature(s) or object(s) touched (Up to one per level)
Duration instantaneous
Save Fortitude partial; see text Spell Resistance yes
Clicking your fingers together creates a tiny sonic boom, which the magic holds in the palm of your hand. Each touch unleashes this tiny boom and deals 1d4 points of sonic damage. Any creature that takes damage from this spell also takes 1 point of dexterity damage unless they succeed at a fortitude save. This spell does no dexterity damage to swarms, but does count as an area attack for the purposes of affecting them.

:D

If you really prefer I can play a wizard other than Bigby. >.> But I'd dearly love to do the same kind of thing. Highly thematic, highly versatile, with a familiar. Bigby should have a monkey.

I like the Magnus myself Gandal and you could be any type of warrior to go along with it, excluding a two handed/two weapon style fighters maybe. I still want to make a sword and wand wielder.

Pixel Cube and everyone - the first module for this doesn't come out till FEB/MARCH of next year so we will be playing a short prelude game before it. And I see no cause not to be seconded level before we start. Only place to see what the AP is about is right here at the paizo site. Possible being under WBL will off set this.

Thanks for dotting your interest Arknight. I am going to have to say no to the Expanded book to start. Just going to use the psionic rules in the SRD because it's all I have access to. But in a year or so maybe I will have the book or pdf (To make extra enemies for you to fight no doubt). Please post up whatever character you would have fun playing and I'm sorry but Elan isn't on the allowed races list.

Purplefixer, I understand what you mean now and since you can gain most of those spells easy enough, I will allow for you to create a few new ones. To keep this in a little balance when your character gains a level he must choose at least one spell from an allowed source the other spell may be a new one created by you (renaming an existing spell does not count as creating a new spell). Then of course time and money will balance out anymore new spells you receive. I don't know the adventure yet so am not sure if there will be "time gaps" for your character to spend researching just yet.

Balodek, good start. Background is most important at this stage so please let me know when it is ready.

Akisame's Info:

Akisame Koetsuji
Age: 30
Height: 5’ 6”
Weight: 185
Race: Human
Ethnicity: Tian
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Blue

Physical description:
Akisame is short physically well build and flexible. His hair is messy and unkept. He has a light goatee. He usually wears monk robes and pants and wears prayer beads. He has intense piercing eyes and it is like he can read your mind He has no blemishes and he looks very healthy.

Personality:
He is very philosophical. He follows his own philosophical beliefs. He applies them to all he does. He is not very vocal though. He will put out his views but he hates verbal confrontation. He will not argue with people. He has his beliefs and so do others. He will not get involved if others attempt to do something he does not believe is right. He is kind and merciful. He believes in provocation of his foes rather than directly attacking them head on. Though he will put himself in harms way to protect others. He stands up to those who bully the weak and will not hesitate to seriously hurt someone who does something to wrong someone else. His expression us usually quite stoic from time to time but he does smile often enough. He is a man of few words and expressions.

Motivations:
Akisame has two major motivations.
The first is he wants to wander the land seeking problems to assist in. He helps good people wherever he can and punishes bad people. He never stays in one place too long. Usually long enough to learn whatever he can or solve what ever problem is present.
The second motivation is learning and getting better. Akisame is something of a scholar and enjoys visiting places that contain ancient secrets or unique mysteries. He likes to gather information about people and their cultures. He also trains hard and looks for new encounters to better perfect his martial art. Perfecting mind and body.

I don't know much about the world so the background is going to be terribly simple. Hopefully the other stuff I provided is a good start.

OK i've made up my mind,i'm in before it is too late.
I'll use my female magus (maybe change from elf to human, so to have an extra feat), only need some input for a background.

It happens if you try to access it from the "new" comments. This happens because the GM hasn't given this campaign a title yet, using the new campaign tools.

I'm fine with both decisions. :) I think I could do him up as a Half-elf and include a lot more potential background from that than a human. So officially a Half Elf Soulknife

OK. Jekaterina is ready to go. Knocking out the embers of her pipe, she repositions her pack and casually fills her pipe again. She notes the greying clouds on the horizon and wonders to herself, when will the storm arrive? Time to seek shelter...

Lost Gamer:
Let me know when you want to start. Feel free to email me at cumanannan@hotmail.com or AIM at oceanshieldwolf@aim.com
Question: Are you open to piecemeal armor from Ultimate Combat? Jekaterina has the armor of bones revelation, which lasts an hour per level (not necessarily consecutive), but it doesn't stack with any other armor - so essentially she doesn't have armor at all without it. I'd like to be able to give her lamellar horns arm and legs which together add +2 AC, for AC12 generally , and have the armor of bones cover only the torso area, giving her AC16 with that revelation enacted. What do you think?

I don't know if i'll the time to follow all these games, and could'nt know yesterday of that other game set in the Forgotten Realms.
Sorry if i started an application here but i see there plenty of people wanting to play here, so i'll leave room for someone else.
Have fun.

Sorry again Lost Gamer

Story for Rhesus

Rhesus Ghawn:

"I want you to go to this place, Golarion. You will study the humans of this town known as 'The Shackles' and find out what they need. Our studies indicate they are pirates and cutthroats, so be careful. Find valuables for the clan and send them to our agents in town."

"Yes father."

Rhesus Ghawn was born to the Ghawn trading cartel on the Plane of Shadow, one of the kayal who lived in great cities there and traded with the Material Plane. Sent to Golarion to study the ways of it's peoples, he fell in love with the swashbuckling heroes of stories told around hearth fires and in bars of The Shackles.

Taking to life at sea, a strange thing he had never encountered before, Rhesus quickly turned his agility and intelligence towards learning the trade of sailor. Of particular interest to Rhesus is the Eye of Abendengo. His greatest desire is to brave the heart of this storm and learn if there is anything of power his family can use in their fight to become a prominent merchant clan.

Rhesus is tall and lean, his alabaster white skin and bright yellow eyes hidden behind cloaks and a hat when on land, he gets by with only pants and boots while at sea, preferring the feel of salt water on his skin and face so far from the eyes of strangers. His scimitar is well worn but of good quality, and he has no hesitation in using it in defense of his life or the obtainment of goods for his clan.

Fortenns has been an assistant in the Arcanamirium for many years now. At 39 years old, it might actually be many, many years now. Like twenty two years now. He's only gotten smarter, over time, but something is missing in his life. He's in fact now working for someone he went to school with originally all those years ago, and the two of them aren't particularly friends. It's sort of being held over him, in fact.

But you'll be hard pressed to find a wizard in better shape than he is, and really, everyone knows that if you want to excel, you need to go see new places, be influenced and inspired by strange monsters, and really put yourself forward, put yourself out there and let the world see what difficulties you can arise to.

Some quick notes on character background I wanted to run past.

Concept Notes:

Born in a small fishing village to a human mother, Valeros grew up being ridiculed for being a half-breed. The village was 90% human, so he got a lot of it. When he turned 16, he got in a fight with several of the other kids. As an adult broke up the fight and blamed Valeros for it, he became angry and struck out at the man with his emotions running high. He felt a strange sensation as suddenly a shimmering sword of energy appeared in his hand and through the man. It was not a mortal wound, but enough that it scared him. Running home, he told his mother of the incident. Saddened and a bit afraid for her son (as the man was someone of some power in the village) she encouraged him to travel down the coast and put his fishing and sailing skills to use. With a sad heart, that's what he did and was gone for two years.

Recently, he received a letter from a friend of his mother that asked him to hurry home, the man was causing a lot of trouble for his mother and she needed her son's help. He left the ship as soon as possible and rushed to the village where he found he'd arrived too late. His mother had been accused of being in league with demons and devils and had been killed for it. (She had always had a reputation as someone with the power to 'see' things, an Oracle of sorts and that just made it easier for her to be outcast.) With a rage born of all the years he'd been bullied, Val went after the man, now the spiritual leader of the village.

When he was face to face with the man, it was as his arms were held by two thugs. As the older human bragged of what he'd done to Valero's mother, Val was amazed to discover that he'd done it out of spite when his mother had refused the man's advances. As Val began to try to break free of the thugs, the man turned, speaking arcane words of power and Val felt himself falling asleep. His elven nature resisted it, but the man's power was strong and overcame the resistance.

Val awoke in chains on a slave ship. With some effort over time, he convinced the crew that they needed his sailing skills. When they give him the chance he proved that they did indeed need him alive and unchained. However, the first chance he had when they were drunk, he escaped overboard. Now, he earns his keep however he can while trying to become skilled and powerful enough to return and avenge his mother.

Thoughts?

Oceanshieldwolf:
That would be a great way to help your character's AC so I will use the Armor Pieces rules with this. Will be getting groups together over the weekend for posting SUN night. The first game will start TUE or WED next week.

Thanks Gandal - you enjoy your games as well.

Balodek:
Great background and fit into the AP. Maybe I will side quest you all to the Plane of Shadow, lol. Still not putting groups together till SUN. What about tactics in a fight and personality is he quiet and sneaky? full of bravo and daring?

Like the intro Purplefixer, and a glance at the crunch I see you add in the effects due to old age, nice. That will give you some RP fuel for sure.

Arknight:
A good background leaving open some things for side quests. And when the PC is near home once more he may find it hard to resist a little jaunt back, but by then will he still seek revenge? Or have the trails of his life tempered him? Who knows but it will be fun to find out.

Still looking at groups and will post them SUN night. How bout a take on Valeros's personality until then.

Tactically Rhesus would happily alternate between flamboyant or sneaky, as the situation demands. His idea as a swashbuckler is to swing from ropes and leap around making noise once he's noticed, but with no problem sneaking around first either, as befits his heritage.

As a squishy rogue he doesn't really want to be hit either way of course.

Thanks lost gamer. Btw, i'm gonna change profile name to Erina to keep it short for everyone. Also not liking pic, so will change it.

Shadow Lodge

Ok everyone some great characters form all. Will be putting two groups together of four players each. So good luck to all.

Will do this up tonight (10-Midnight EST), so still time anyone reading this. And then set up Discussion tabs for each group.

If you have time please let me know if your still about as I have not heard from some of you for a little while.

You can't be both a Tetori and a Flowing Monk, Shanosuke. If you take them both you enter a recursive loop and your brain melts down from stacking problematics. ;p

Both archetypes REPLACE the full list of bonus feats. Unless the GM specifically allows you to take one list or the other, or some such thing? The concepts are mutually exclusive too. "Grab you, crush you, never give you up, never let you go, never run around and desert you" opposes "Flow like water, never touch me, make you fall down, hahahahah".

Shadow Lodge

Still around, just nothing new to post unless I missed a question you had on my character?

I see what you mean. I like the possibility of mixing the two. One attacks on its turn and the of off its turn. Just thought it might work

I'm going to do Flowing Monk because it fits the character better.

Puff........ Puff.........(idly checks pipe again. Looks around.) .....Puff.....Puff

Shadow Lodge

And now the moment you all have been waiting for... drum roll please.

Group 1:
jamie noone - Kale Moore - human fighter
Erina (formerly Oceanshieldwolf) - Jekaterina Miaan - human oracle(bone)
Purplefixer - Mister Fortenns Bigby - human wizard (Evoker - Admixture School)
Vanulf Wulfson - Randall McNally - human bard(sea singer)
+ NPC - Ro Tessu - human monk(zen archer)

Group 2:
Pixel Cube - Elan Smokestick - halfling Alchemist
Shanosuke - Akisame Koetsuji - human monk
Arknight - Valeros - half-elf soulknife
Balodek - Rhesus Ghawn - fetchling rogue(swashbuckler)
+ NPC - Szardur - half-orc barbarian/cleric of Kurgess

I will be setting up a discussion thread for both groups in a minute and posting a link for group 2 after this post.

Great gaming to those who didn't make it.

Shadow Lodge

Here is that thread for group 2. Pop in and we can discuss the group and your characters.

Group 1 should be a discussion thread for you all set to go here.

Having played beside a Zen Archer Monk in another campaign, is it okay if I change my character to an expert, just take popcorn-munching as a skill and never bother with making an attack roll? Prioritizing perception and with only one item to boost it, our ZAM was routinely beating DC40 perception and could kill an adult black dragon, by himself, before it could REACH our party.

I know that ZAM is the new High-Bar when it comes to character power levels, but I'd far, far, farfarfar prefer a ranger or sniper-rogue?

Why do we even need the GMPC? I have a monkey familiar!
