Shackled City (Pathfinder) - GM_Chris

Game Master Chris Shannon 719

This will be the Shackled City adventure path using the Pathfinder rule set. However, the existing deities (i.e. St. Cuthbert, Pelor, Wee Jas) will not be converted to similar Golarion gods.

Free from distractions, Dyrant examines the cage. It radiates strong abjuration, conjuration, and necromancy magic and strong evil. The silver and gray bars of the cage twist in on themselves in strange and disturbing patterns. The cage appears associated with the plane of Carceri. As an artifact, it can not be idetnified via identify.

Ike's possessions include:
+1 light fortification full plate
masterwork light shield
+1 spell storing bastard sword (empty)
periapt of wisdom +2
cloak of resistance +2
scroll of invisibility
scroll of mirror image
scroll of teleport
boots of striding and springing
ring of counterspells (empty)
two holy symbols of Wee Jas
keys (to cathederal doors)

Nothing on the others.

Finneas Glenn wrote:

He was currently the acting head of the church as the head of the church, Embril Aloustinai, has been absent for a couple months.

How heavy/big is the cage? Can we remove it? And what would it take to even be able to identify it? Do we need epic knowledge?

Dyrant hmmms and hawwws over the strange cage.

"This is odd, indeed. We should take it to the Church of St. Cuthbert maybe. Or destroy it? Maybe send it far away? I just don't know yet..." Dyrant announces sadly.

Dyrant puts the 3 scrolls in his haversack and offers the boots to Atol and/or Finn.

"These are nice booties. Atol?"

Dyrant pokes at the cage and finds it surprisingly light, only about 50 pounds.

The book says legend lore or vision for further information.

Dyrant stomps around the room, clearly enjoying his advanced size and strength, swinging AngelRelic around, just daring another cleric or bone devil to appear before him.

I'll give them all a good cudgeling!

After a few moments, Dyrant returns to the cage.

"Yes, we should take it with us. It will be interesting if we can harness it into a weapon." Dyrant gazes around for a non-dead foe to test the cage on. "Well, let's get moving. I am remarkably well."

Dyrant flexes a flabby muscle.

Dyrant will explain the ring to Toffitt.

Booties, Atol? Or are they for someone else who complains about movement?

Glimmil spares the boots a glance.

"Those boots aren't too bad, but I worry that those heels won't provide the necessary comfort for a long journey. I've had this idea about little padded things you can put into boots to make them squishier and softer for such events, but with all our heroic do-gooding, I haven't really had a chance to follow up on it..."

Glimmil takes a breath and ducks under one of Dyrant's more haphazard swings.

The party easily removes the coffin size cage from the ceiling. An exploration of the rest of the cathederal shows it to be empty except for the body of the Stormblade Todd Vanderboren (the group was nearly killed off during a recent exploration beneath Cauldron). A gentle repose spell protects the body. His body appears to be being handled in the normal manner of Wee Jas followers preparing a body for burial or preserving it for a resurrection spell.

We do not yet know the full nature of their corruption, which may just have been a matter of local leadership. Let us send a communication to the church's central authority, and see whether they might send inquisitors to set things aright."

Dyrant laughs at Dr. Toffitt's efforts to fight fires.

"Doctor, this is a religious matter. I don't expect you to understand," Dyrant says trying to remain patient. "This needs to happen even though you don't understand it, Doctor."

Dyrant slams his staff on the ground, chanting words of power...casting Wall of Fire to burn what needs to be burned.

Dyrant turns away, chuckling.

Tis the will of St. Cuthbert. Swift retribution is his commandment.

Dyrant returns to the Grand Hall.

Description of Grand Hall:

GM_Chris wrote:
The grand hall of the Cathedral of Wee Jas is a magnificent sight. The huge octagonal room measures one hundred fifty feet across and the vaulted ceiling rises to a height of fifty feet in the hall's center. Pillars engraved with images sacred to the faith of Wee Jas ring the massive chamber, and an exquisitely rendered symbol of the death goddess covers most of the chamber's otherwise bare floor. Built to house huge gatherings and contain powerful magical ceremonies, the hall is as beautifully and sturdily built as any building in the city. Strangely, there are no pews or other items of furniture at all in the chamber. In addition to the grand doors leading into the main hall and a second set of even larger doors to the east, there is one small door in the southwest corner of the room that leads into a circular tower within the cathederal.

Dyrant walks to the intricate symbol of Wee Jas, a sneer on his face.

"Atol? ATOL! We have work to do!" Dyrant, with Aralynn nearby, casts Summon Monster VI, calling forth 1d3 ⇒ 3, one! two! three! THREE!!! Ah ha ha! huge earth elementals.

"This symbol," Dyrant points at the symbol to Wee Jas and speaks to the EEs. "This symbol must be destroyed beyond recognition. Rend if from the stone! Erase the blasphemy from this church. Erase the blight from this City."

I'm hoping the EEs can do some significant carnage to the floor before moving to splinter the front doors.

M Steinneblin (Rock Gnome) Paladin 16/Cavalier 1

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Glimmil rushes in between Dyrant and the office of the Weejassers.

"No fires, Dyrant! If this temple catches fire, maybe all Cauldron will catch on fire. That wouldn't be good."

Cog whines in agreement and looks at Dyrant with giant-sized, sad brown eyes.

The whine seems to say and you might hurt a stray dog in a nearby alley... don't hurt doggies.

M Steinneblin (Rock Gnome) Paladin 16/Cavalier 1

Ninja'd!

"No, no, no!"

Glimmil rushes ahead of one of the earthen elementals and holds his hands out to plead with the creatures and their zealous master.

"We don't destroy things! This temple was probably a lot of work for someone to build. We just need to paint it."

Glimmil looks about the stained glass windows, the high ceilings with nice beamwork, the lush rugs and tapestries.

"Hey, you know, with some paint this could be the Cauldron Five Headquarters."

That'd teach those do-badders. Start a do-badding place, we just take it over and start do-gooder operations. Heck, we conquered a whole demi-plane in Oxy-Pittus, what's a single stone cathedral?

Glimmil continues to interject himself between elementals and their requested destructive duties.

Once again he looks to Dyrant, and behind himself.

"Oh! The symbol!? Yeah, that looks terrible right there. We should demolish it and come up with our own new symbol."

I'd have thought that we've outlasted so much, a little disagreement over the destruction of a piece of property would drive you out of the Cauldron Five?" "I'm not confused, Dryant, you are. Wee Jas isn't evil, and while Ike is responsible for trying to kill us we've punished him for that. I am not a follower of Cuthbert. I follow Kord, and since you don't seem to understand I'll explain what that means. Kord is the god of strength. The strong lead, the weak follow. The strong stand, the weak fall. We are stronger than Ike, and he has fallen. That the followers of this church are acting against Cauldron is clear, and we should be finding who else was involved. If your petty vengeance is worth a holy war, start it without me. When your faith proves too weak to see this through, you know where to find me. The rest of us are going to track down the rest of the evil in this town. If it leads us to the church of Cuthbert I will personally make sure you are in the church when we burn it down, since that's what you understand."

Fifth: I have seen this many times. It is those with the most flawed faith, the most to prove, that take things to the extreme.

The half-orc turns to leave, following Atol out.

"Atol, wait. We need to find out what's going on in this town. Somebody has been poisoning Dyrant. They've probably been putting it in that gristle stew he eats. He's lost his mind, and until we track down the people who are doing this he's going to keep hurting people."

Toffitt takes a chunk out of one of the elementals, and then moves to interpose himself between them and the holy symbol. Should they successfully destroy it before he reduces them to rubble, he stops.

Dyrant watches as Finn walks out.

'If Jenya's church is also behind all this, then you'll be behind me in destroying it." Seriously, St. Cuthbert is nothing but not ruthless in taking the cudgel to their own...you think Dyrant wouldn't be delighted to take down Jenya? He'd have Jenya cudgeled by the time you got your first leg in your wresting tights.

Dyrant nods as Dr. Toffitt takes the cage out.

"Good. That should probably go to Jenya for safekeeping and study. I'll not be able to unravel that without aid," Dyrant chirps helpfully as he directs the EEs to finish destroying the symbol.

Dyrant smiles and turns to Glim, his smile fading as the Glim's hallucinations take the best of him.

"Glim, she's not a good goddess. Good goddess don't give their powers to those that would do evil. You saw the two that we faced...one of them was even a dog-striker. And you know there is no greater do-badder than a dog-striker." Dyrant tries to explain patiently. "You do remember them trying to kill Cog, right? This goddess is not a good and holy one. This one deals in magic and death."

Dyrant tries to cheer up the little gnome.

"Now, Glim, what shall we make of this place? A new orphanage? A place to clothe and feed the downtrodden?" Dyrant ponders aloud. "Or maybe we should create a place to help the animals of Cauldron."

"The Doctor is extreme and selfish? Or Dyrant? You've confused me again. Don't you follow Cuthbert? Isn't he a god of laws and order? Didn't he help found this city? How can you stand by and let Dyrant bully you into believing he is right in this? You should stand up for yourself Atol, you are stronger than this."

Finneas wipes the sweat from his head.

"You are a powerful follower of Cuthbert. A true follower. Call one of Cuthbert's angels, ask it what it thinks of Dyrant's actions. If it says he was right, then so be it and I'll let it rest. But if it says he's wrong, you need to confront him before he leads you and Glimmil to your doom."

A heavy sigh.

"Come with the Doctor and myself. We need to figure out this cage while Dyrant is tearing down the city. We need to find a cure for him and this cage might be the answer. You are our heart Atol, the Doctor is our brain, and Cog our morality, we need all of you to succeed in this. I am a strong arm and Dyrant is the flappy bit that old men get on their neck, without you three we're just a flappy bit and an arm, and no flappy arm ever solved a problem as difficult as this."

Finneas looks almost ready to pass out after this last bit, and leans against the wall, sweating and looking at Atol with soulful eyes.

Like this.

Atol too stands confused a moment. He's sure he's right, but he cannot find a way to explain it to Finneas.

"I have no spells to convince you today, but I may in the morning. I also wish to speak to the dead man, and maybe raise him if he is an innocent in this."

He also has a hard time following the description of the party, but he understands the look of confusion on Finneas' face. He's seen that look in the mirror...

"Where are we going? Who can identify the cage for us?"

Glimmil's head bounces back and forth as he follows the conversation between the other members of Cauldron's elite forces of good.

While much of the religious discussion soars over his head, he feels a sense of anxiety between his comrades, who appear to be giving Dyrant unfavorable looks.

As the gnome surveys the remnants of the symbol of Wee Jas, he scratches his head and contemplates the bits of information he has managed to absorb.

The Cuthbert church said this whole temple was do-badders.

Cuthert has done a lot of good stuff for Cauldron. He's obviously good, which means both Atol and Dyrant should be good.

Of course they're good, we've been fighting demons, devils, dragons and more!

The Wee Jassites tried to kill us all, including Cog. Including Cog!

Glimmil, knowing that right is right, and wrong is wrong and there is little gray area crosses his arms and gives all the others a disproving look.

"Hey! Let's knock off all the fighting."

"And, the big words too."

The gnome clears his throat.

"These Wee Jassers were obviously do-badders. They had that devil that almost poisoned Dyrant on their side. That's what we all do, and have been doing. Fighting the big bad guys who want to hurt Cauldron!"

Glimmil waves Claw-Whomper about dramatically.

"So, that's what we're going to keep doing! We all have our own way of doing it, but without all of us, even without just one of us today, we may have failed. And that's a risk we just can't take."

Finneas puts his eyes away and clasps Atol on the shoulders.

"We'll start with the Temple of Lordly Might. If Father Asfelkir can't help us we'll figure something else out. We know the fire giant made this, right?"

Seems that Finneas, Atol and Toffitt are headed to the Temple of Lordly Might with the cage. Dyrant is headed to Jenya. Glimmil is turning his head back and forth watching the group split.

At the templte, Father Asfelkir welcomes in Finneas (and any others). After a recap of events,

"Well. It seems you have proven Kord's might again today, Finneas. It's disturbing news that followers of Wee Jas are involved in what plagues Cauldron."

Kord examines the cage, but has little to offer. "I'm afraid neither I nor my staff have the spells required to delve further into the secrets of this cage. I wonder what would be caged in there. There's nothing in it right now is there?"

"You mention a similar cage made be a fire giant that you let live during your, uhm, younger days. Perhaps, you have the strength the ask questions of him now."

!!!

Glimmil accompanies the others to the Temple of Kord, hoping to be around to hear what heroic deeds might next need to be performed by his companions.

And also to get decorating ideas for the new temple in Jzadirune, always knowing that Finneas dressed somewhat stylishly, and hoping the rest of his brothers and sisters may provide some inspiration.

As Asfelkir suggests a repeat visit to the fire giant cagesmith, Glimmil bobs his head in agreement.

"This is just what we need to put the Cauldron Five back on track!"

And I have a giant to repay for collecting gnome skulls...

Glimmil's eyes widen and he begins to brush off imaginary contaminants from his clothes and armor.

I had a vengeful thought! Ack! Dyrant's rubbing off on me!

Dyrant leaves the Church of Wee Jas triumphant.

Another evil vanquished! Huzzah for St. Cuthbert!

He stops outside the Cathedral doors to say a quick prayer to St. Cuthbert for lending his strength in battle before going back home.

"You see, Aralynn? With our lord's help, we have defeated a great evil in our city," Dyrant turns to look at the large stone cathedral. "I would reduce it to rubble if I could, Aralynn, but our lord does not yet deem me worthy of such power. The Wee Jasians who were not good would need to rebuild elsewhere, hopefully with better tenets of faith and understanding of civilized actions." Dyrant huffs.

Dyrant goes to see Skie, not yet ready to call upon Jenya (at least not without Atol).

"Skie, I see a scroll. It's quite urgent and the local temples are unlikely to carry it..."

At Skie's Dyrant will sell equipment and place an order for a scroll of Legend Lore. Witch list, 'natch.

* * *

Dyrant will return home to begin reviewing every document and every book taken from the office, starting with a re-reading (and copying for security) of the note.

* * *

If and when he sees Finn, he'll ask a question that has been wearing at his mind.

"Finn, do you know where the cage is now? Is it secure?" Dyrant looks concerned. "It should be in a holy place, protected from the dimensional transgressions of the devils that our foes have been employing. We have foes who can blink in and out in an instant...and Dr. Toffitt cannot protect the cage alone. It should be someplace safe. Would the Kord Hold wish to guard it until we can crack it?"

Hearing the news that the Kordites are not able to help, Toffitt asks, "Is your temple protected from extradimensional incursion? Er. Teleportation. Er. People just appearing out of no where?" Do they like things as plain spoken as Finneas? "If so, perhaps we could leave this cage here in your care."

He goes to seek out the Striders, hoping they might have someone with sufficient power to divine the true nature of the cage. If that does not work, he will seek out the Pelorites. It's time to engage the other faiths in our efforts. My Cuthbertine comrades need proof they're part of something larger than their own sect and its pieties.

Failing all of these things, Toffitt will consent to a visit to the fire giant. At this time, it does not occur to him to reach out to Dyrant or Atol. He specifically avoids it, as discussed.

"Sorry, but I don't have any such scrolls. It'll take me about a week to get something that powerful. What exactly do you need it for? Where's Glimmil? He's okay isn't he?" Skie stares at Dyrant.

Dyrant debates how much to hedge as he answers the question.

"Uh...uh...he's fine. We're, uh, just trying to save the City of a combined forces of terrible evils involving devils, evil churches, assassins, and almost certain doom. And Cog is fine after the beating he took...no matter...uhm...so, the scroll?"

Dyrant will also sell our loot.

He cannot ask about past events, so he focuses on the future. In the quiet of his own room, he lights the incense, makes the offering and asks of his god simply, "Should we return and destroy the church of Wee Jas, leveling the altar and desanctifying the holy spaces?"

1d100 ⇒ 58 vs DC 80

After the divination is complete, he spends a little time preparing himself before going downstairs to breakfast. As usual he prepares a Heroes' Feast for temporary hp: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9, but he wonders who will show up to partake this morning.

After a hearty and filling breakfast Atol feels much more himself again and prepares to face a new day. He asks, of whomever is there, "So now what do we do? I think we should contact the church of Wee Jas and find out what their intent is here in Cauldron and let them know what we've done to their high priest. I also want to speak with the dead Stormblade, but, er, well, I could use some help on what questions to ask. I can ask him 5 questions."

"One of the questions I plan to ask is whether he wants to be raised. Assuming he does, we should contact his group for the payment and take care of it today. I prepared a Raise Dead just in case. So what else should we ask?"
