Rise of the Runelords - GM Pablo (Inactive)

Game Master Stetrix

Something is afoot in Varisia. There have been a series of odd murders in a small town on the west coast called Sand Point and more recently the capital Magnimar, where even the lord-mayor was a target. A cult of serial murderers called the Skinsaw Men was uncovered and stopped. We have also received reports of more activity along the border.

I would like you to go see the lord-mayor of Magnimar. Assure him the Pathfinder society will do what we can to help him. Investigate these goings on and see if there is a common thread to all this unrest. We have a lot of interests in Varisia and would like to maintain the good graces of the government. I doubt the lord mayor will have you sitting around for long. It is a big place and inevitably something will need attention.

So how does that sound? A mission without a precise goal and with no guarantee of coin. Ha! Are you up for it?

Buchart reaches in with his gloved hand and gently squeezes the sack. He feels the coins inside. He lifts the sack out of the cedar chest. Lifting the sack releases a pressure plate under it and a razor swings out from the inside (undetctable from the outside). hand chopper: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25. Ouch! Next time it's your turn, Rolande. After all, every coin counts when you aren't being paid!

And with his lower lip in a pout, Buchart takes his CLW wand to Cela. Sniff, sniff. And Buchart learns his lesson about being the youngest and therefore most gullible member of the party...the hard way!

I also want to thank you for revenging the deaths of so many of my brothers at the hands of the Grauls as well as recovering my bow. What are your intentions now? Have you notified anyone of Fort Rannick being overrun by ogres? Magnimar must know, even then it will be weeks with winter upon us before they can muster reinforcements. Turtleback Ferry should also be warned, The Kreeg Caln will start to expand their territory, now that the Fort can no longer hold back their evil and the village will be the first target when they run out of food in the fort.”

"I have a silver raven figurine that should be able to bear the message to Magnimar and Turtleback Ferry. We can work out the message to be sent together."

"As for the fort... We've been sent here to find out what happened and we've done that. I don't feel nearly done by half, though, so I want to march up that trail and blow ogrekin heads off with snowballs until it quits being funny. So that's what I intend to do. However, you have to have realistic expectations of our capabilities. If we get up there and there's 500 ogrekin in the fort, I plan to sneak away very quietly and find somewhere to hide."

Didn't you get Sending scrolls?

"The Raven as you will, but send message. The sooner the better!"

I'm glad that you'll accompany us. I don't think there is more than 500 and I know every inch of the fort. If we can get to their leader, we stand a chance." The Commander smiles. "I didn't say anything about Ogrekin, these are ogres, bigger and stronger than the Grauls. I hope your up for this?!"

I had forgotten. Maybe we should save those for later, when we know more? Party call.

Sorry Bucky! Who would have thunk it?
How far is the Fort? When we get closer we could have Cela fly over for some recon.

This is a conversation I want to have had before we rest. And on that note I would like to edit my spell list for the day after the Graul assault. We need to do some serious brainstorming the night after.

500 is a rather formidable force, Commander. Is 500 the number of expected foe in the fort or the number of foe in the clan? Let's see. We have you three from the fort, Shalelu, the six of us, Kibb and Fahari. The twelve of us taking on 500 ogres is folly.

Well, regardless of whether we attack the fort soon or not we should at least reconnoiter it to be sure of the numbers. Twelve will work for that purpose. I think we should go forward with great caution once we torch this place!

Scarab Sages

Male Human Magus L8/Brawler L1/Bloodrager L1

I've been looking into spells and magic we have on hand. Chill touch, frostbite and ray of enfeeblement should work quite nicely against bigger stronger foes. Not to mention I will be applying the wand of vampiric touch (I am assuming it is 5th CL). We will enlarge and might need to make another wand if we gather a large force.

”Rolande, Fort Rannick is located 20 miles north of here at the northern end of a wide valley that runs along the southern edge of the mountains. This bleak landscape stretches on for miles along the border between the mountains and Kreegwood. Me and my men are with you, if you are up for this, right men?!” Vale nods his approval ”Lets give them some retribution for our brothers or die trying! Kaven also agree ”I’m with you!” Jakardros continues, ”If you have a pen and parchment, Vale can draw a detailed map of Fort Rannick, so we can plan the invasion of the fort together. I don’t know where the ogres are located, or exactly how many ogres are still stationed within the fort. I can all but guarantee that there’s a lot, probably around 50, not 500. While the ogres have the advantage of numbers, we have the advantage of surprise and superior knowledge of the area— There are some secret caverns that run below the fort and I’m positive that the ogres haven’t discovered the hidden tunnels, which is one way in. Unfortunately there are some shocker lizards in those tunnels we will need to deal with if you want to enter that way.” Vale starts drawing a detailed map - with the other Black Arrows offering suggestions here and there.

Sekkimm recalls the conversation with Lady Heidmarch...

The next day you get up early to find Canayven Heidmarch, Lady Sheila Heidmarch and Shalelu Andosana around the breakfast table. Lady Heidmarch says "I thought Shalelu would be good company and she is familiar with the wilds of Varisia."She smiles, "also it will get her out of the city which I know she deplores. One last thing..." She hands Sekkimm a leather scroll case. "You will find 3 scrolls of sending here. Report when you have something on Fort Rannick or anything major I should be aware of. Safe travels"

I noticed an unclaimed amulet of natural armor +1 on the treasure sheet. Does anyone else want it? I'll take it if not. No such thing as too good of an AC where we're going!

I would take it since the idols are for spell casters, but not sure if it will stack with my other protections. Pablo?

Dark Archive

Adding the +1 Amulet will increase Roland's AC to 23/18 flat footed and Bucharts to 21 /17 flat footed. No impact on touch AC probably because existing items.
The varisian idols are 1 use 75gp each. The amulet is 2000.

You decide or roll 1d20s.

-Posted with Wayfinder

I know a lot of the items so far have been spell caster oriented (wands and such), and I have yet to take anything at the farm, so I would like it. If we need to roll so be it.

Scarab Sages

Male Human Magus L8/Brawler L1/Bloodrager L1

Go for it Rolande. I can always use the ever useful Shield spell and soon medium armor! Unfortunately, the spell takes time out of an assault.

Can the secret chest property used to make the beneficial bandoleer be applied to any belt and does this property only work for firearms? Could it be used to store wands? If so, I need that and would pay Sekkimm in brandy and gold to have it work! That would relieve a move action to a swift action if I need to swap wands in combat.

Thats a great idea! If he can make it I would chip in on it. Pablo can you update my sheet for the amulet please?

Scarab Sages

Male Gnome Wizard Illusionist Specialist Lv 12th

You use secret chest to create an extra dimensional space like a bag of holding. You could add to an existing items, but stacking magic adds additional costs.

No need, bro! You had to pay for your belt bonus, I'll pay for my belt property...if allowed! My problem now is that I have a list of things for Sekkimm to make me, but I always spend my gold on wands. Need to slow down on that! What we need to find is a set of mithral plate that fits Anaba!

NP! If you need any gold just let me know. Are we about ready to leave the farm?

How are you contacting Lady Sheila in Magnimar (Raven or Spell)?

After Vale finishes the map you discuss the fort and defenses as the Rangers hungrily consume their breakfast They are looking better, but still a bit weak and very thin from their three week ordeal at the hands of the Grauls. After breakfast you saddle your mounts (Buchart will need some from your wand please) and emerge from the cabin with the horses and prepare to leave while Cela remains behind to light the buildings on fire.

Cela gives you a good head start to the main road then lights the fires. Satisfied the fire catch she turns into eagle form as the dry wooden structures catch into a huge inferno. There has been so much rain there is no risk of the surrounding woods catch alight as well.

Regrouping down the road, Cela rejoins the group. Your party moves along the path north

Suddenly a group of six ogres emerge from the surrounding woods! See Forest Path map

FYI - You are all mounted:
Spell Casters: If you are riding on a moving mount, taking a bouncy ride in a wagon, on a small boat in rough water, belowdecks in a storm-tossed ship, or simply being jostled in a similar fashion, you must make a concentration check (DC 10 + the level of the spell you're casting) or lose the spell. You are in combat and the horses are spooked, so you will need to do this unless you dismount.

Fighters/archers gunslingers: Your mounts are not combat-trained, directing it into combat is a Ride DC 20 move action. If you fail by more than 5 you fall off. Firing a gun from a horse not trained in gunfire is a very bad idea!

Fast Mount or Dismount: You can attempt to mount or dismount from a mount of up to one size category larger than yourself as a free action, provided that you still have a move action available that round. If you fail the Ride check, mounting or dismounting is a move action. You can't use fast mount or dismount on a mount more than one size category larger than yourself.

If you don't have the ride skill - you might want to consider dismounting as a move action. Attacking without training will impart penalties to hit depending on your actions (melee or ranged)

I am wearing the natural armor amulet. I have Ride skill and will fast dismount with a forward flip hit the ground running and engage.
acrobatics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Web's 20 foot radius, so that should be 8 squares by 8 squares? Well, first I'll fast dismount:

ride: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Then I'll web all of the ogres on the east side. Web's not the perfect spell, but I can land it on half of them, so it's certainly not bad for a second level spell. DC's 12 (base) + 5 (int) + 2 (spell focus / greater spell focus) for a reflex DC of 19.

I'll give you a move action if I make the ride check.
