DM Carbide |

Nia creeps down the stairs with scarcely a sound, descending into the depths below the crumbling manse. Eventually she comes to a limestone cavern whose walls drip with moisture, with swaths of dark mold growing in spiraling, tangled patterns on the floor, ceiling, and walls. Rubble and broken bones clutter the floor, and a rhythmic sound—like the breathing of some immense creature—echoes through the cave from three tunnels, one to the north and two to the west. Of the two western tunnels, the southernmost one seems to be a relatively new creation.
The first slide has the map of the new area, with an arrow denoting Nia's position.

DM Carbide |

What is Nia doing, and is anyone else doing anything while waiting for her?

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Noting the tunnels- particularly the new construction- and lack of visible enemies, Nia returns to the group to bring them back down to the cave.
Does the mold look dangerous?
Kn:Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 9 + (4) = 15 Haha, ok maybe she's not great with mold.

DM Carbide |

I presume that Garrick is also following.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia grimaces. "Thanks." She gestures at the newest looking excavation. "My guess is she went that way."

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia nods and heads in the direction of the new tunnel.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick follows behind, guarding the rear (and conveniently keeping his loud self away from Nia's sneaking).

DM Carbide |

Nia leads the way back down the stairs, followed by Andrezi, Vidar, and Garrick. As Garrick takes the first step down, Vidar notices the smell of rotting flesh getting stronger.
Surprise Round:

Vidar
Garrick
Nia and Andrezi can take an action in the surprise round. No one can see anything yet, but I assume Vidar gives the alert.
Garrick Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Andrezi Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Vidar Perception (add +2 if familiar is close): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Garrick Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Andrezi Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Vidar Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Not loving that Nia's the only one on the map.
At Vidar's warning, Nia clears the last step, snaps her rapier up into a guard, and pulls a vial out of her belt pouch, which she quickly downs.
OOC: 5' step north, take out/drink Sooth Syrup (+5 vs Nauseated/Sickened for 1 hour), Total Defense (AC 32 this round).

DM Carbide |

Surprise Round (ongoing):
Nia and Andrezi prepare for a fight.
Garrick experiences a sudden vision of Aldern Foxglove, sweaty, filthy, and wild-eyed, digging away at the intact stone floor of the room with a pickaxe. With each swing, he grunts out two words: "For you." Garrick somehow knows that Aldern is speaking of him (though it's not clear whether he's speaking about Garrick or the viewpoint character of the vision). As the vision ends, Aldern breaks through the floor to expose the ancient stairs, and a horde of gibbering ghouls pours through the opening to drag him down before they turn their lambent eyes to Garrick's viewpoint.
Garrick, DC 16 Will save.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Garrick shakes off whatever strange pressure was affecting him.

DM Carbide |

The vision fades from Garrick's sight, and with it the stronger odor of carrion.
Out of combat!
The newer passage is fairly narrow, but not so much as to inconvenience any of the party. However, the dead and decaying bodies decorating the floor make the traversal an unpleasant experience.
What's your marching order?

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia, Andrezi, Vidar, Garrick, I think.
Nia moves along at the head of the group, eyes and ears peeled for surprises.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22

DM Carbide |

Nia can see that the passage widens up ahead. and can make out a faint glimmer of light.
More to come later; possibly tomorrow, but I'll be traveling over the weekend and slower to post.
Second random check: 1d20 ⇒ 4

Garrick Oakbeard |

Sounds right

DM Carbide |

Nia enters the room, reasonably confident that nothing is going to surprise her. Like the rest of the party, though, she is surprised when a creature like a giant bat unfolds itself from the ceiling and emits an earsplitting shriek!
Everyone except Garrick, DC 16 Fort save or stunned for 2 rounds.

"It's a ghoul bat!"
How high is the ceiling/can PCs hit the bat from the floor?

DM Carbide |

It's reachable from the floor.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia grimaces against the ear-piercing scream, takes a moment to consider her target, then steps forward and stabs upward into the huge beast.
5' step to get into range, move action to Study Target, standard to attack
Rapier+Studied Target-Fight Defensively: 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 27

Round 1 (ongoing):

Garrick
Nia hits, stabbing the creature deeply. It bites at her and misses, then flaps into the air. Nia can take an AoO, and Garrick can act.
Skaveling: AC 18 T ? FF ? HP taken: 16

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia swipes at the undead monster as it takes to the air.
AoO: 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 31
Dmg if hits: 1d6 + 2 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 6 + (2) = 15
Crit confirm?: 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 20

DM Carbide |

Nia, how are you still getting Studied Combat/Studied Strike on the AoO?

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Sorry, forgot Studied Strike discharges the Study Target. So that's just a 27 to hit and 9 damage with a confirmation roll of 16.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick steps forward and takes as swing at the thing, but staggers on a loose floorboard.
Waraxe: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 Well, that wasn't worth waiting for.

DM Carbide |

Nia tags the bat as it flaps up into the air, and Garrick arrives too late to reach it.
Round 2:

Bat
Garrick
Nia can act! The bat is currently out of reach.
Skaveling: AC 18 T ? FF ? HP taken: 25

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia's eyes stay locked on the ghoul bat, blade at the ready.
Can I just ready an attack for when/if it comes back into range?
Move action to Study Target, standard/ready attack.
Rapier ST-FD: 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 33
Studied Strike: 1d6 + 2 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 6 + (3) = 14
Crit confirm?: 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 30

DM Carbide |

Sure. Don't forget to burn a use of inspiration for the Study Target, though.
Round 2 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Vidar-stunned
Nia-acted
Andrezi-stunned
Bat-acted
Garrick
Nia readies to meet the bat, which obligingly circles around and executes a flyby attack. Her rapier strikes a vital nexus in the necromantic energies that animate it, but it's still moving (although her blow caused it to miss badly).
Garrick can take an AoO against it before acting!
Crit damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Skaveling: AC 18 T ? FF ? HP taken: 47

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Will do, thanks for the reminder on re-using Studied Target after hitting with Studied Strike. I missed that.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick takes a slash at the creature as it tries to attack Nia.
AoO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26 for 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Did it go back out of reach, or can I attack again?

DM Carbide |

It flew back out of reach, but since it's down to 1 HP and next round the stun effect ends I'm going to call it.
The party makes short work of the badly wounded undead.
Out of combat!
Searching the area, you find three relatively intact human bodies. One is a male missing his left arm. He's got much nicer gear than the other two--a pearl ring worth 300 gp, 56 gp in various coinage, a hat with a magical aura, and an adamantine longsword.
The glimmer of light in the room is from the alcove in the northwest corner, where there's a shaft to the surface.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Kn:Local: 1d20 + 13 + 1d6 ⇒ (9) + 13 + (6) = 28
Nia quickly cleans her rapier and sheathes it before walking over to check the bodies. After a moment she chuckles and turns back to the others. "This is the notorious one-armed bandit Shaz "Redshiv" Bilger, suspected of organizing the robbery of at least two merchant caravans a year over the last decade. Proof of his death is worth 500 gp from the authorities in Magnimar. I guess we figured out what happened to him."

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick says, "Not surprised that a thief or brigand might try to hide in a wrecked manor house. Guess he picked the wrong one. Still, we should definitely contact the authorities to let them know he's been found."

Apollonia Vigilanium |

So is what looks like a passage to the NW on the map the shaft to the surface you described? I'd much rather back up and take a different route that doesn't take us to the surface if that's the case. But maybe I'm misunderstanding the map/your description?
Nia nods. "We can present his equipment as proof of discovery. Just give me a minute and we'll keep going."
Just wanted to make sure we loot the body before we move on. None of us use a longsword but we can sell it for a good amount.

DM Carbide |

Updated the map.

Andrezi Zeldana |

Definitely loot the body...
"That was unpleasant." Andrezi says, shaking his head still trying to slough off the effects of the bat's screech.
"I guess these other two were minions of this Redshiv?" the priest asks. "Seems like a dead-end here. I believe there were a couple of other paths near the stairwell, shall we?"

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Thanks DM. Backtrack it is. Go back to that main chamber then take the first passageway (the middle one).
Nia nods at Andrezi. "Let's go."

Vidar Ekstrand |

Vidar chuckles with ark humor at the situation.
"So, without us needing to put in any true effort, we have just come across a small fortune.
Now, all we need to do is survive long enough to claim it."

DM Carbide |

The passage goes a few feet west before branching.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

1d2 ⇒ 2
Take the right fork.

DM Carbide |

Following Nia's lead, the party takes the right branch. Just before reaching an area where the passage widens, the investigator thinks she hears a slight sound of something scraping on stone.
Apollonia Perception (+2 in darkness): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Garrick Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Andrezi Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Vidar Perception (add +2 if familiar is close): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia stops and gestures silently at the group, pointing to her ear then in the direction of the noise. Once everyone indicates they understand her warning, she continues on.
I guess that just keeps us from being flatfooted when we get jumped?

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick nods, then remembering his companions don't see as well as he does in the shadows, raises his axe.
