DM Carbide |

There's no sign of Iesha's passage here, but no one has said that they're specifically looking for her trail.
Taking the lefthand branch leads to a foul-smelling cavern whose western half is heaped with bones, each scarred by the scraping of teeth. The long bones have been cracked open for the marrow within.
There's a narrow fissure in the northeast end of the cavern. It's not possible to see through it to the other side, but the smell of salt and rot permeate into the room through it.

Andrezi Zeldana |

Andrezi reloads his crossbow and follows along with the others. "So be it. The abominations that reside here need to be dealt with."

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick nods, then pauses, "So long as we're not leaving an enemy at our backs that could block our escape."

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia precedes the group through the smelly cave to go check the fissure in the northeast corner.
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13 (+2 in the dark)
If she can keep her Fighting Defensively bonus up out of combat, that would be great since I'm fairly certain we're going to get ambushed again.

DM Carbide |

It's still not possible to see to the other side, and it still smells like salt and rot, plus something else.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia shakes her head. "Sorry, this looks like a dead end. Maybe there's a branching passage before you get to the ocean the other way." She gestures back the way they had come.
Let's go down that other passageway, then.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick shrugs, "Could be. This whole place doesn't seem to make any sense.... Of course, just 'cause we don't fit in the fissure doesn't mean something else wouldn't."

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia nods. "True. I'd like to at least see if there's a way around before we try to push through. I'd feel real dumb if I squeezed through there and just wound up in a passageway on the other side that we could have just walked to." She looks around at the ground. "Plus it doesn't look like Iesha came this way."
Now that I've remembered, Nia will keep looking for signs of Iesha's passage.

DM Carbide |

Backtracking and taking the other branch, the party quickly comes to a veriginous gulf, a cathedral-like cavern whose roof arches up to thirty feet overhead. Fifty feet below, a pool of water surges and foams. A steep stone ledge winds down to the pool, its slope glistening with moisture and mold. A stone door stands in the northwestern wall, about halfway down the slope. Iesha is clawing at the door.
In addition, there are four goblins in the cavern. Their atypical color and claws are strong indications that they've become undead.
Round 1 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Goblins-acted
Party
The goblins rush up and surround Nia, their unnaturally clawed feet enabling them to navigate the slippery surface with ease.
Everyone can act! However, Garrick needs to make 3 DC 15 Fort saves or be sickened for six minutes, and Nia needs to make four saves or be sickened. It's a 10' radius around the goblins, so if/when Andrezi and Vidar get that close they'll also have to make saves.
Potential duration: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Andrezi Zeldana |

Knowledge (Religion) DC 12: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
"Ghast goblins!" Andrezi exclaims as the fetid creatures approach. "Stronger versions of ghouls." he adds firing off his crossbow at the one draped in pink tatters and reloading his weapon.
Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 4 = 18 (firing into melee)
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6

DM Carbide |

Round 1 (ongoing):
Andrezi's crossbow bolt misses the agile undead.
Andrezi knows that they resist channeling, and other than that knows they have nothing but the usual undead traits.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Well, that's no good.
Fort: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Garrick finds himself gagging at the stench of the foul creatures - and the discomfort remains even as he releases the power in his blood, his skin hardening and the power of life itself flowing through him. He moves forward, and plants his foot to swing his axe in a powerful arc.
Waraxe (Raging,PA): 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 = 23 for 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 The sickened -2 cancels the +2 from Arcane Strike

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Fort save, DC 15: 1d20 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 5 = 24
Fort save, DC 15: 1d20 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 5 = 12
Fort save, DC 15: 1d20 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 5 = 9 sigh...
Fort save, DC 15: 1d20 + 3 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 5 = 20
Nia, fighting back the taste of bile in the back of her throat, attacks while trying to fend off the monsters swarming her.
Study Target on pink, Full Defense, attack with Studied Strike
AC is 29 with FD active.
Rapier, sickened: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 13 - 2 = 14
Dmg, sickened: 1d6 + 8 + 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + (6) - 2 = 17

DM Carbide |

Round 1 (ongoing):
Nia completely misses her target, while Garrick's target is only saved by the cover provided by the cavern wall.
Vidar to go!

DM Carbide |

Vidar does significant damage to the goblin ghast.
Round 2 (ongoing):
Goblins-acted
Party
The three ghasts in front claw and bite at Nia, but none manage to hit her. The fourth stalks back and forth behind the line, ready to join the fray when it can.
Everyone can act!
Goblin ghasts: AC 20 T 16 FF 15 HP taken - Blue: 12 HP Red: 0 Magenta: 0 Black: 0

Andrezi Zeldana |

Given the ineffectiveness of his crossbow, Andrezi casts a blessing on the party.
Cast Bless. +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.

Andrezi and Vidar boost the party in their own ways.
Nia and Garrick can act!
Goblin ghasts: AC 20 T 16 FF 15 HP taken - Blue: 12 HP Red: 0 Magenta: 0 Black: 0

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Though she wants to throw up, Nia focuses through the waves of sickness and waits until the perfect moment to attack the little monster in front of her.
Move action Study Target, use Studied Strike on Blue. Hopefully she and Haftor can take out that one together.
Still Fighting Defensively for 29 AC
Rapier, sickened: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 13 - 2 = 26
Dmg, sickened: 1d6 + 8 + 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 + (2) - 2 = 9

DM Carbide |

Round 2 (ongoing):
Nia drops the ghast, whereupon the fourth one steps over its body and bites at the investigator. She easily dodges. Don't forget the +1 from bless and the +1 from haste.
Garrick to go!

DM Carbide |

In this case, she used a move action to study the target, so she doesn't get an extra attack.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Would Garrick's hatred apply, since they're goblins?
Garrick swings the axe, happy for the speed from Vidar's spell.
Waraxe (Raging): 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 11 + 2 + 1 = 21 for 1d10 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 13
Waraxe (Raging): 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 11 - 2 + 1 = 21 for 1d10 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 10

DM Carbide |

IMO the justification for the Hatred bonus (special training) doesn't apply when (as in this case) they have no memory of their living existence, and fight like undead. Incidentally, check the math on your bonuses to hit--you're getting the same total for two different dice rolls.
Garrick once again finds the wall interfering with his attacks.
Round 3 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Ghasts-acted
Party
Once again, none of the ghasts manage to hit Nia.
Everyone can act!

Garrick Oakbeard |

That seems odd -- oh, the first should be 19 - seems the -2 for sickened flipped over.

DM Carbide |

Garrick, Nia, Andrezi?

Garrick Oakbeard |

I swear I posted an attack after making the comment.
Garrick tries, once again, to make a hole for himself to help Nia, attacking the ghoul blocking the way.
Waraxe (Raging): 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 2 + 1 = 28 for 1d10 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 15
Waraxe (Raging): 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 11 - 2 + 1 = 26 for 1d10 + 7 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 - 2 = 10
If the ghoul falls, Garrick will step forward to take the spot

Andrezi Zeldana |

With few other options, Andrezi fires off another crossbow bolt toward one of the ghouls, and reloads.
Light Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 = 17 (firing into melee, bless, haste)
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia ducks and dodges, blade flashing as she continues to fight the horde.
Move action Study Target, use Studied Strike on Blue, trying to make room for Garrick to step up.
Still Fighting Defensively for 29 AC (30 with Haste)
Rapier, sickened+Haste: 1d20 + 13 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 13 - 2 + 1 = 24
Dmg, sickened: 1d6 + 8 + 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + (2) - 2 = 14

DM Carbide |

I forgot to remove Blue and move Black up, so I applied Nia's and Garrick's attacks to Black.
Having boosted the party significantly, Vidar delays. Andrezi takes a shot at one of the ghasts, but misses. Nia wounds one of the remaining enemies, and Garrick finishes it with his first blow.
AIUI, it's not possible to move diagonally around a corner, so Garrick would have to move north through Nia and then east to get to where the black ghast was. This would expose him to AoOs from the remaining pair--do you want to do that?

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia can 5' step to the right and Garrick can take her spot. If he just tells her to move over she will, feel free to post it.

DM Carbide |

OK, that works.
As the ghast falls, Nia sidesteps. Garrick takes a quick step forward and wounds another ghast.
Round 3 (ongoing):
The ghasts continue to attack Nia, and although one comes close the investigator successfully avoids every strike.
Everyone can act!

Garrick Oakbeard |

No longer fighting around a corner, Garrick smiles and lets loose with his axe.
Waraxe (Raging, PA): 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 2 + 1 = 22 for 1d10 + 11 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 2 - 2 = 15
Waraxe (Raging, PA): 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 - 2 + 1 = 9 No need to roll damage on that one..

DM Carbide |

Round 3 (ongoing):
Garrick finishes off the wounded ghast.
Nia, Vidar, and Andrezi can act!

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Nia smiles as Garrick drops the ghast and teams up with the dwarf on his target.
Move action Study Target, use Studied Strike on whichever one Garrick is attacking (Pink if Garrick doesn't already have a target).
Fighting Defensively for 29 AC (30 with Haste)

Dmg, sickened: 1d6 + 8 + 1d6 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + (2) - 2 = 12

Andrezi Zeldana |

Andrezi fires off another likely futile crossbow shot.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 6 - 4 + 1 + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6

DM Carbide |

Nia wounds the last ghast, while Vidar waits and Andrezi still can't hit the nimble creature as it keeps Nia and Garrick between it and the cleric.
Round 4 (ongoing):

Wounded and desperate, the ghast keeps its focus on Nia. This time, Nia can't quite dodge in time, and it tags her for 2 HP, plus DC 15 Fort save or paralyzed for 3 rounds.

Paralysis: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Apollonia Vigilanium |

Fort save, DC 15: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Nia's muscles lock up and she screams as her body stops responding.

DM Carbide |

Fortunately, Garrick's minimum damage will drop the ghast, and he's got two shots.

Garrick Oakbeard |

Garrick swings his axe, trying to hew down the unnatural thing before him, the perversion of the very energies of life that are flowing through the dwarf and giving him strength.
Waraxe (Raging, PA): 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 9 - 2 + 1 = 23 for 1d10 + 11 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 2 - 2 = 13
Waraxe (Raging, PA): 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 - 2 + 1 = 12 for 1d10 + 11 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 2 - 2 = 13

DM Carbide |

Garrick's blade chops into the last ghast, destroying enough of its body that the necromantic power animating it can't sustain its unnatural existence.
It is at this point that Iesha succeeds in tearing open the door. She croons coquettishly, "Aldern, my sweet. Were you trying to hide?" A shriek of grief echoes from the other side of the door, followed by babbled cries for forgiveness.
Vidar and Andrezi can still act this round. Remember that the floor is slick.

Apollonia Vigilanium |

I scrolled up but don't see it- do we know how hard it's going to be to move on the slickness? If it's a high DC we might need to try to prep before we move.

DM Carbide |

Huh...I thought I'd included that. It's a DC 5 Climb check to navigate the slope at your normal climbing speed. If you try to move at your normal walking speed it's a DC 12 Acrobatics check to move normally, and if you fail the check by 5 or more you'll slide all the way to the bottom. This will do you some damage and leave you in the water.

Vidar Ekstrand |

Vidar struggles with the curiosity to rush forward and see what is happening behind the former door and his self preservation.
In the end, he takes a deep breath and gets his morbid curiosity under control.
Besides, it is much more important to mind his place in the marching order and make sure everyone is alright before forging ahead.

Andrezi Zeldana |

Andrezi up beside the paralyzed investigator, protecting her flank while the party waits for the paralysis to wear off.

DM Carbide |

Round 5:
Iesha enters the room and passes out of sight. The babbled pleas for forgiveness suddenly stop, cut off by Iesha's shriek of rage, and the other voice screams hoarsely. The thumps and shouts from inside the room suggest that a fight is happening.
Everyone but Nia can act!

Garrick Oakbeard |

Does being a grounded dwarf help with that roll (like, do I get the bonus?)
