GM My Red Sun |

my appologies all for messing up some pretty simple things on this combat. not sure why I had so much trouble with it. might be because the other group is fighting this same fight with very different chacacters involved.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

Wow! Congratulations everybody! And specially to GM Red for his consistent daily posting.
It has been 15 months, but they past very fast. I feel we are starting to know each other and working together better and better.
And there have been very good roleplaying in the party. It is a joy to sit everyday in the computer and face together the children of the freezing north!
Thanks a lot for it everybody!

Ashling_Frost-wing |

first time in my history of Pbp i've actually gotten through an entire book

Callix Ingritdottir |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

I'd like to thank everyone for the fun so far -- and letting me join in.
And especially GM Red -- I have to think that GMing a PbP must be a lot like herding cats. ;)

GM My Red Sun |

it's really not too bad. it can take a while to write a post if they get complex, but there's no time pressure to come up with good reactions quickly. it lets me be a lot more creative in making the world respond to you than I tend to be in a RL game.
this group has been excellent, I am really enjoying the depth you all have put into your characters. the roleplay has been a delight, and the group is doing very well through some pretty tough combats.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

We have around 4100 gp of disposable gold to buy stuff in Waldsby. Is there anything we notably need? Perhaps a new wand of healing (how is the one we bought going)?
@GM Red Sun, what type of magical items can we expect to find at town?
As for the remaining equipment, and having into account what Callix and Letitia have claimed, this is the relevant stuff we still have to figure out how to distribute.
Unidentified equipment
unidentified potion (from Mierul)
unidentified vial of blue liquid (from Mierul)
unidentified robe (from treasure)
unidentified ring (from treasure)
Remaining equipment (pick this stuff please!)
alchemist's fire [x8]

Ashling_Frost-wing |

with how often i get hit those left over healing potion might be useful

GM My Red Sun |

reposting what I showed you guys when you first rolled into town. Waldsby is a bit limited, but if you need some refills on stuff this would be a good time to get it. Whiterun will of course have much more stuff available, but you might have to be creative about how you go about shopping in a hostile city...
so Waldsby is a small village, and won't have everything available. anything under 500 gold can be found here, things that cost more than that will have a % chance to be available. there is also a list of specific items that are available from the module:
+2 studded leather, +1 darkwood quarterstaff, masterwork shortbow, oil of protection from evil, potion of cure moderate wounds, wand of goodberry, wand of cure light wounds, +1 arrow catching light wooden shield, belt of mighty constitution +2

Samuel Soulkeeper |

Let's buy that second wand then.
Samuel would be interested on the magical studded leather, but that's way ahead of our current richness even if we sell out stuff at Waldsby.
The shield and belt are interesting too, but we cannot buy them either.
Ashling, that's ok, which ones do you want? We can split the rest of the potions among us.
Letitia, are you interested in the other scrolls and the Cauldron?
What shall we do with the remaining stuff? Sell?

Ashling_Frost-wing |

ill take the light wounds, those plus my own magic healing should cover everything.
sell for now what we don't think would be useful, in my opinion

Letitia Frost |

I think we should keep the cauldron, since it's very useful in augmenting summon spells. I wasn't planning on being a summoner, but the summon spells are on my spell list so it's definitely a force multiplier.
My only concern is that there's a lot of treasure going to Letitia. I don't want anyone feeling like they're getting short-changed (that icicle wand, especially, is really pricey).
But so long as no one minds, I'll carry the cauldron with me, but any (Callix or Ashling) who feels like summoning can use it instead.

Callix Ingritdottir |

I'm thinking we should keep the healing/recovery scrolls and the dispel magic, certainly. And I'd consign the bag of holding to belong to (and contain) the party's stores.
Callix used an alchemist's fire from that pile to kill the troll - and will replace the one she'd used earlier -- so technically, taking 2 of them from the 8. She'd like one of the scrolls of Magic Weapon, if not both -- because if her axe is already +1, then she can use her sacred weapon ability to give it a power.
Callix won't take the enlarge potion - she's a finesse fighter, it would hamper her. Alec might like it, though.
I think we can try to ID the stuff from Mierul again now that we've gained a level.
And, as I said in the game thread, given our need to leave right away, it might be better to wait to do our trading to the next town.

Letitia Frost |

Good idea!
Spellcraft (blue liquid): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Spellcraft (potion): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
*+1 if ice/winter magic
So I think the consensus is to buy the wand in Waldsby and enough supplies to get us to the next town, then we start selling off the stuff that we don't need there.
If Nadya's uncle is aligned with the Heralds of Summer's Return, then perhaps he's also got black market contacts that will allow us to sell off the rest of the equipment (or that group will buy the stuff off of us).

GM My Red Sun |

the potion is a potion of undetectable alignment
the blue liquid is an Ice Floe Elixer
you are able to buy a new wand of CLW.
as you figured, it is hard to sell the more valuable items from the Pale Tower, especially to people in a town that is under Nazheena's control.
the AP gives you a bunch of items in the Pale Tower that you'll need to hang on to for a while if you want to sell them, and could be useful in the meantime. it is purposely hard to fence Nazheena's stash at this stage.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

I think this might be a great opportunity to make use of the elixir of fire breath. Whom does make sense to be carrying it?
I have updated the loot spreadsheet with everyone's picks, please make sure you add those to your profile, I will try to check it out later and remind you, but it might slip my mind. Thanks for the ID of the two items.
Letitia, I am ok with people taking whatever is useful for them if that gives more chances for the party to succeed, even if that means someone has more wealth, like in this case.

Callix Ingritdottir |

Actually, yes, given my ability to cast Shield of Faith, I'd rather the Amulet than the ring, since the deflection bonus won't otherwise stack.
Alec - would you be ok with switching?

GM My Red Sun |

All the spoilers!
added a new map for this battle. once again no map was included in the book... so I'm grabbing random maps from google images. this particular section of the AP is extremely lacking in maps... they have a decent number of encounters for your journey to Whitethrone but not a single map until you get there.
Feel free to adjust your starting positions as you were approaching the cave. I just stuck you on there in a somewhat logical fashion with the 3 ranged characters in a row behind the three more melee-able characters

Samuel Soulkeeper |

The positioning is good GM!
They usually make use of map-tiles for the random encounters. On the GM threads for each adventure sometimes people publishes community made maps to use for each encounter. I found a good bunch of maps like that for the Runelords campaign.

Letitia Frost |

Where'd all this green come from? What's happened to my beloved Irrisen?
;-P
I moved up a bit to get in range of my hex, but looks good otherwise.

GM My Red Sun |

sorry for the delay. I started to write this post yesterday, not realizing how crazy complicated activating 2 creatures was going to be. that was quite a long post considering...
certainly an interesting creature

GM My Red Sun |

Oh, and some bonus info for Letitia, because of your high knowledge nature roll. I didn't catch it at the time when I was giving you the info on the creature, but I should tell you now especially since it didn't quite come into play. the mold is resistant to acid, and completely immune to cold.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

Callix winces at Samuel's choice of words
Sorry, I am no native speaker and some jargon or double senses my skip my mind. Has Samuel said something inconvenient or offensive? :D

Letitia Frost |

Calling someone dumb is basically a schoolyard insult, roughly the same as calling someone stupid. It's not really offensive, but it's not kind either. So it makes sense that Letitia would get defensive, especially as an Intelligence-based caster (even though it was Wisdom damage).

Samuel Soulkeeper |

I see now. Well sorry for that, I meant to say that your mind might be cloudy, dizzy, confused or something like that, as usually Wisdom helps to perceive the world, I understand Wis damage as hitting your senses somehow.

GM My Red Sun |

posting this on all of my PbP games:
the last month of the year is very busy for a lot of people with Christmas and vacations and all that goes with that. I will be traveling for the last couple weeks of the year, but will continue to post when possible.
expectations for the rest of the year will be much more relaxed. I will not bot anyone unless asked to, and will hold off on GM posts until everyone has been able to respond to the last post, unless it is a conversation where only a few PCs are asking questions to an NPC or something like that.
once we hit January I will start posting and checkin more regularly again and we can pick back up.

Ashling_Frost-wing |

thank you GM, i was about to say with Christmas shenanigans i might be a tad busy

Callix Ingritdottir |

I'm pleased to hear this too. Work has been crazy, plus we're seeing up a "big girl" room for my daughter - so I'm nowhere near ready for the holidays -- so, whew. ;)

Samuel Soulkeeper |

I just found this beautiful snowy road rest battlemap and thought it might came of use for this campaign at some point.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

Happy 2020! Let's have another year of memorable snowy gaming here :D

Ashling_Frost-wing |

Hopefully this year turns out better than last

Samuel Soulkeeper |

I fear snow is difficult terrain Alec, thus unless you have some special ability like Callix to ignore difficult terrain or snow in particular, you cannot take a 5' step on it :(
That is basically the reason Samuel is stuck in the road, moving less than a snowman in this encounter xD (because he needs a move action to reload a bullet unless he uses a paper carriage which I cannot afford easily spending yet).

Samuel Soulkeeper |

Oh! I see now. My sincerest apologies!
Cold-honed, cool half-elven trait! It makes most sense with Alec's story too.
It seems only Letitia and Samuel have difficulties with snow then. I guess Letitia will soon start flying around, but I will need a bit of more help to move through the snow. Perhaps with some magical item or so. At least Samuel can shot from range without having to move much, which helps considerably because it seems this AP is loaded with snow everywhere.

GM My Red Sun |

yeah this party is pretty loaded up with cold-based abilities! lots of cold resistance and abilities to move through snow. very helpful. definitely turning into a very different story than the real-life RoW I ran where the whole party was made of people who grew up in or around Heldren and had never dealt with Irrisen at all.
If i haven't said it recently, I am really enjoying this game. this is my favorite game I'm playing in or running right now. you guys have been doing a greta job of keeping things moving and having some excellent role play and interpersonal interactions which are super fun.

Samuel Soulkeeper |

I am also enjoying a lot this group and adventure, I share all your appreciations :)

Letitia Frost |

I'll get the icewalking ability at some point as a Winter Witch as well. Sorry, Samuel. I guess you'll be the only one struggling to move in the snow!
Glad to be a part of this game! It's fun being the "ice queen" and I hope she's fun for the other players to play off of.

Alec Fuornkiln |

I have to admit this game isn't always fun, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it immensely. It offers a very unique opportunity to explore areas usually left untouched in roleplaying. Most games and stories focus on the heroes, the good they do, and their positive traits. This game really explores a lot of the less positive personality traits that people have and that's incredible to me. That chance to argue, have different opinions, debate them, and still come to together to fight common foes and win the day really makes these characters into actual people and not just numbers on a page.
And most of this is possible because of our illustrious GM. One of the best in my book and I've dealt with a lot on the boards. Your bookkeeping is appreciated, your narrative is impressive, and your style is enjoyable. What more could we ask for. My hat's off to you Red Sun. Thank you for your time, energy, and dedication to running a most wonderful game.

Callix Ingritdottir |

Also glad to be part of this - it's been a lot of fun - and being able to explore our characters - and the interaction - is excellent.

Ashling_Frost-wing |

ditto, fun game and thankfully one of the few i've joined that hasn't died. a fact i am immensely grateful for

GM My Red Sun |

Hate to do this in the middle of a combat, but...
Posting this in all my games (GM and player):
My wife just had our third baby, a little bit ahead of schedule. my posting will be off and on for the next few weeks as i stay home and help my wife. i will still post when able, but posting consistently in multiple games takes a chunk of time, which i will not have for a little bit.
thank you for your patience! if this is a game where i am a PC please feel free to bot me. if this is one of the games i am running, thank you for your patience. feel free to fill the dead space with RP or discussion or just wait for my posts to return!
thanks all
