Don't you need an ASF roll?
Findor Liamiel |
Good question. I'm not sure. Usually when it says you use something to cast a spell, the use of something means it does not require spell components. But it isn't clear in the rules. I've been having rotten dice luck lately, though, and I wanted to avoid the roll, which is why I channeled it through the sword.
If however, the DM rules that a spell channeled through the sword still requires spell components, I'll just cast the spell normally and take my chances.
ASF 1d100 ⇒ 62
Findor Liamiel |
I say if you channel through the sword, it is successful as long as you have the spell components somewhere on your person.
I meant like somatic and verbal components. If I am using the bonded sword to cast the spell (i.e. channel through the sword), will I still need to make the appropriate verbal and somatic components?Generally speaking, a component pouch will take care of the material components.

ROUND 4 SUMMARY
Findor, from the SRD: "A bonded object can be used once per day to cast any one spell that the wizard has in his spellbook and is capable of casting, even if the spell is not prepared. This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the wizard, including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the wizard's level." So yes, you still include somatic and verbal components.
Maysalkirii slashes visciously with his blade, scoring deep into the monster's hide.
Narses lashes out in his rage, striking with his larger axe.
Adele moves to a position of safety and continues her song.
Dragox casts a spell to heal his grievous wounds.
Findor summons arcane energies to increase his size and stature.

Ouch, poor Findor. I was hoping to take the aggro.
Maysalkirii focuses his judgement on his Wrath rather than Protection, seeing Findor go down but unaware of the Elf's condition. He motions for Narses to step into a flanking position with him, delaying his initiative until Narses 5-foot steps into position. When he does, Maysalkirii strikes with incredibly vicious blows. His spiritual rapier makes a final blow and then vanishes.

Findor, did you heal the 7 points Adele channelled 2 rounds ago? If you missed it, it's enough to keep you alive at -9....
Adele has barely reached the injured Dragox's side when she hears the heavy thud of the enlarged Findor hitting the ground. Without pausing in her song, she moves toward him 1 square north, 1 square east and lays a hand on her shoulder, directly above the birthmark in the shape of Shelyn's holy symbol, seeking the goddess's help once again.

The roaring of the beast dampens to a mournful bleat as its heart's blood gushes from the wounds inflicted by Maysalkirii and Narses. With a loud and reverberating thump, its body drops to the ground and sinks a few inches into the soft marshland earth. The air is still and silent.
The damage to your party has been grievous. Findor's body shrinks back to its normal size as the magic of his spell dissipates. Even a casual inspection reveals he is dead.
The party is faced with a monstrous corpse, several crates and barrels in the muddy shallows nearby, and a fallen comrade.
Dragox |
Dragox rushes to the fallen elf's side. Seeing that Findor has already embarked to begin his next journey, the half orc quietly muttered a few words, "May the Dawnflower's light help guide you on your path into tomorrow, friend."
Adele Dujardin |
"Findor!" Adele runs to him and drops to her knees beside his mangled form. For a moment, she stares in shock, then draws her mouth into a thin line and looks around at the situation. "Dragox, quickly, has your Dawnflower any fire to ensure that this creature doesn't rise to fight us again? Feek, Narses, can you reach those crates and barrels? Findor followed Desna, Lady of Luck; if she truly favors us today, perhaps there will be something miraculous within. Dragox," she asks him more softly, "you met with the priest back in Drellin's Ferry. Is there any chance he or anyone in this vale has the power to bring life back to the dead?"
Dragox |
Getting up to burn the creature at Adele's request, he sighed regretfully, "I am quite sure such magics are beyond the priest's means. He, like I, seems too inexperienced to possess such advanced divine favors."
He moves close to the monster, inspecting whether or not it was continuing to heal the damage administered to it. He torches the monster with a scarlet ray of flame he shoot from his hand.
Fire Bolt from Fire Domain, if the monster is regenerating. Ranged Touch to hit target. If it is down and out, hopefully I don't have to make an attack against it.
Fire Damage if necessary 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
DM Tanner |
1. Fire damage is only necessary to prevent the regeneration of a lost head. Once the body has been killed, the hydra is quite dead.
2. From your conversations with townsfolk, you know that there are more experienced spellcasters available in Brindol.
3. But there is a mysterious druid back in Drellin's Ferry...
Adele Dujardin |

Wasn't sure. Better safe than sorry. :)
Getting up to burn the creature at Adele's request, he sighed regretfully, "I am quite sure such magics are beyond the priest's means. He, like I, seems too inexperienced to possess such advanced divine favors."
Adele sighs. "Then we will have to go to Brindol, unless we find the druid in Drellin's Ferry to be of any help." She bites her lip. "Druidic magic is a bit ... imprecise when it comes to raising the dead, but the journey would be much shorter. I hate to leave our job of protecting the road go undone for too much longer. But really!" She clucks. "A hydra? They're concerned about hobgoblins deterring trade and travellers when they have a hydra on the road?" She shakes her head crossly. "Well, let us gather our friend and his belongings. I'll see if he has any arcane equipment that might aid us in getting him safely back to help." She begins to check his pockets, then sits back on her heels with a shaky laugh. "By Shelyn's grace, I feel like a pickpocket. I do hope Findor won't mind my going through his belongings. I'll have to ask forgiveness when he is with us once more."

"We have to go through Drellin's Ferry a long time before we'd get to Brindol; we might as well consult with the druid while we're there. If he can't help us, we'll have no choice but to make the longer journey."
Narses Kale |
Grabbing the breastplate and wretching off the goblin corpse, Narses will wash off most of the grime. Holding it up in the light he examines the beauty muttering 'will you look at that' under his breath. Turning back to the group with the breastplate under his arm he shouts to them, "Nuth'n here exept rotten garbage and goblin corpses. Exept this shiny piece of armor ther's nuth'n usefull."

Dragox says a quick incantation and looks closely at the piece of armor Narses was holding. "Let me glance at that for a second, Narses."
Cast Detect Magic.
Dragox |
Yep, to Drellin's Ferry,it is.
"That armor is certainly magical, Narses," Dragox explains after seeing the aura surrounding it. "I am sure it will be of help to us to pay for the higher level magic Findor requires."
DM Tanner |
Dragox cannot fathom the properties of the silvery breastplate.
A few moments after Adele drops the note into the box and steps away, a low *pop* can be heard. Minutes pass in silence. You then hear the soft lapping of water come from across the river as a rowboat drifts towards the shore on your side. There is nothing inside, save a small folded piece of parchment on one of the benches. A rope is tied to a mooring ring to pull the boat back to wherever it came from.
Yes.
Strip your friend to his small-clothes and load him in the boat.
Place a pouch filled with no less than 1,000 gold pieces in the boat next to him. Items of equivalent value will also be accepted.
Wait one hour.
Narses Kale |
Taking the note and reading it somberly, Narses strips Findors body respectfully down to his smallclothes, places him gingerly in the boat and then takes off his cloak and covers him.
Stepping ashore he kicks the boat afloat. Then sits down on his haunches, watching and waiting.
Thats a cloack of resistance covering him.
DM Tanner |
Ah! Very nice touch.
1d100 ⇒ 93
After an hour's wait, the rowboat slowly drifts back to the party. The cloak is missing. Inside you find a short, reptilian humanoid with scaled skin, a snout filled with tiny teeth, and a long tail. It is instantly recognizable as a kobold. It is currently unconscious.
Lying next to it is a folded note.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Findor, please consult the reincarnate spell for full changes.
Narses Kale |
'Well I'll be durn'd' mutters Narses as he reads the note and looks to the kobolt in the boat. After looking back and forth a few times he crumples the note with a 'bahh!' and tosses it to the side. Piking Findor gently up he turns to the group. "Well comon then! Let's find sumplace for 'im ta sleep i' off!"
Silently to himself he wonders why Erastil would place him in a company full of his hated enemies, Try'n ta tell me sumtin' Ol' Deadeye? Well, speak up! I'm not hearin ya right I rekon.
DM Tanner |
[metagame] Perhaps the town priest and town wizard could assist with your negative levels and equipment sizing... [/metagame]
The inn you visited before provides a convenient location to rest. Though some of the locals raise an eyebrow when Narses and Dragox carry a kobold through the front door, they are used to the peculiarities of adventurers. In the morning, you all rise to greet the new day.
Findor, you sit up in bed, yawn, and scratch your head. It feels decidedly... bumpy.
Findor Liamiel |
Findor yawns, the air against the top of his mouth feeling particularly good, but he is surprised by the appearance of the long snout in his field of vision.
His vision... the yellow crust around his left eye was gone; the old wound that had never healed properly. He lifted up a hand to feel his face, but jerked back in surprise as the hand he lifted was a small draconic claw.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! !!
In a frantic panic he kicks free of the sheets, managing to knock over the small bedside table in the process, and rushes to a mirror, where delirium, nausea, and finally a second loss of consciousness leaves him on the floor.
Adele Dujardin |
I would have hoped some of the guys would have been in there with him, to break it to him gently. :)
Startled awake by the sound of the kobold's screams, Adele quickly shrugs on a dressing gown and pads down to Findor's door. Rapping on it sharply, she calls out, "Findor, dear? Are you all right?"
Dragox |
Hearing the commotion, Dragox run out to see what was happening. He hoped that Findor hadn't woken up yet, but quickly realized that indeed he had. For once, the 1/2 orc was silent. He decided that Adele's soft touch was better called for here than his more vociferous manner. He attempted to look as empathetic as he could.
Adele Dujardin |
Findor struggles to return to consciousness. He climbs back up, hearing Adele's calls and rushes to the door, flinging it open and surprised at first by the long white wall of fabric in front of him. He looks up, though, realizing he's significantly shorter.
Remember she's a halfling, so the two characters are probably about the same height now. You're just looking directly into her face instead of having to look down at her, like you're used to. :)
Adele leads Findor back into the room and gently sits him down before walking him back through the events of the previous day, to jog his memory. She then explains that he died fighting the hydra, taking the time to point out that the vicious attacks he took freed up Narses and Feek to destroy the creature, thus saving the rest of the group and any innocent passers-by that might have fallen victim to it. Finally, she relates that they brought him to the only spellcaster they knew that was able to call his soul back from Pharasma's realm.
"I know it's a shock, Findor," she concludes, reaching out without flinching to clasp his scaly paw. "Everything must seem so different to you, but as far as we're concerned, you're the same faithful ally we have trusted for so long." She gives him a hopeful smile.
