"That sounds like a plan, Adele...and Feek, I will be sure as to inquire what help the preist has available. Meet back here in 2 hours?," the monk asks. After breakfast he excuses himself from the group and heads to visit the local priest.

After a few pieces of fruit for breakfast and their discussion, Findor is again dressed in the elven robe, Calanharel hanging at his side. It seems a little odd, perhaps, seeing a wizard's robe beside a fighter's weapon, but Findor finds it suits his personality perfectly.

The armor he usually traveled with sat neatly in his masterwork backpack; the bow and quiver were attached to the pack. He makes his way to Sertieren's tower.

Don't you know you never split the party!? ;)

Findor:
Following information from fellow inn patrons, you travel across the village to an old noble manor-house with a handsome view from the bluffs overlooking the river (Site #7 on map). This is the residence of the wizard Sertieren. You heard Sertieren is somewhat reclusive and his house has a reputation for being haunted.

Dragox:
Following information from fellow inn patrons, you travel across the village to a small temple of the same fieldstone-and-wood construction used by many other buildings in the town (Site #6 on map). The holy symbol of Iomedae, made of hammered silver and the size of a good shield, sits prominently on the front door. You have heard that the shrine is in the care of Brother Derny. He has two acolytes who help him tend to the shrine and look after the folk of Drellin's Ferry.

Everyone Else:
Is there anything you would like to do while Dragox and Findor are making house-calls?

For the Dm:

Spoiler:
Dragox approaches the temple. He smiles as he sees the holy symbol of Iomedae...he was quite fond of that particular diety, who was fairly close in profile and beliefs to his own beloved Sarenrae.

He ventures into the temple looking for someone who looks like they could be the priest or the acolytes.

Argh! We lost power last night and I am WAY behind in getting ready for work this morning. I will post this evening. Sorry in advance for the wait. Please feel free to post. Thanks!

If Adele isn't doing anything in particular Feek will go sit in the corner of the tavern and begin ordering drinks, speaking in Halfling initially and then Common if no-one understands him...

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

I believe Narses, Adele and Feek were going to go visit the druid. Plus, Adele is going to ask around to see if there is something like a bank in town or if everyone just hides their money under their mattresses or buries it in the backyard.

Dragox:
Stepping into the shrine, you see the interior is humble, through solidly constructed. Not surprising for the faithful of the Inheritor. A large man with a bushy beard and bald pate is on his hands and knees, scrubbing the floor with a rag and a bucket. He looks up at you and smiles, "Come to pray? The faithful of Iomedae welcome all to her grace."

Adele, Maysalkirii, Narses:
Chatting with some of the inn patrons, you soon learn about Iormel. A wealthy landowner who has been on the Town Council for thirty years or more, Iormel is a selfish misanthrope whose sour manner and legendary stubbornness have caused no end of trouble over the years. He owns several warehouses in town (Site #13), which serve as a place where out-of-town merchants temporarily store goods while waiting for the right time to set out for the west. Though mean-spirited, he is the richest man in town. He often buys goods that are difficult to sell in Drellin's Ferry and ships them to Brindol for re-sale. He is wealthy enough that bills of credit from him are honored by moneylenders and merchants in Brindol and Dennovar, as well.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

DM, Feek & Narses:
"Why, Iormel sounds like exactly what we're looking for! He'll be as likely as anyone to purchase the hobgoblins' gear, and we can receive a bill of credit in exchange instead of a bunch of heavy coins." Adele pauses. "I wonder, though, if the defenders of Drellin's Ferry might have need of some of these weapons and armor. I would as soon have stout men and women using these goods to defend their homes and families as put more wealth into our own pockets -- or into your tankard, Feek! Perhaps we should talk to Captain Anitah before trying to sell all of this." Adele will inquire of patrons where she might find the guard captain this time of the morning. Diplomacy roll to gather information 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

Adele:
Captain Anitah is currently at the Armory (Site #9). A small stone tower about 30-feet-tall, the armory holds arms and armor for the town militia.

DM:
Findor approaches Sertieren's tower openly enough, having nothing to hide from a fellow arcanist. He walks up to the door, and barring any surprises intends to knock and make his presence known.

Honored Wizard Sertieren! Are you within?!

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

DM, Feek & Narses:
"Well, that's right on our way to the merchant's warehouse, isn't it?" Adele remarks brightly. "That's terribly convenient. Why don't we stop at the armory and see if the captain can use any of the hobgoblins' gear against them before seeing Iormel? Then we can go talk to the druid."

Findor:
After a few seconds pause, you hear the shuffling of furniture and a few quick footsteps to the door. A small pinprick of light appears in the peephole (which is at your waist), followed by a shrill voice from within the home. "I don't want buy anything, thank you." You hear the footsteps begin to head away from the door.

DM:

A moment please! I haven't come to sell you anything, though I might be willing to purchase something from you, or perhaps even trade in spell knowledge if my humble spellbook has anything you might wish to borrow for your own.

"Very well. Money is good when you need it, but I rekon we don't need it that bad if it will save the lives of the guards." Narses complies to Adele. "Let's head out then."

I'll be out for the next 12-16hrs.

DM:

Spoiler:
"Greetings Father. I will certainly join you for a short prayer, but before which I have several pressing issues to discuss with you. I am sure you have heard about the hobgoblin issues threatening your town. Well, my friends and I aim to help with that problem. I was wondering if you had any information or knowledge of these creatures that we might use to assist us in our struggle? Also, I was wondering if you had any mercies or items prepared that might be available for purchase to help us?"

Busy morning, will post early this afternoon.

Dragox:
The sturdy priest laughs, "You mean besides their foul, musky odor, ignorance of dental hygiene, and amorality in dealing with other races? Not really, no. Why, have you heard anything?"

Brother Derny has the following items available for sale (all CL5):

Scrolls of bless, cure moderate wounds, cure serious wounds, dispel magic, lesser restoration, and resist energy. He can be commissioned to scribe cleric scrolls of 3rd level or lower.

Findor:
You hear the footsteps quickly hustle back the the entrance, followed by several seconds of clanging and grinding as chains, bolts, and latches and unlocked. The door opens to reveal a dignified if eccentric-looking halfling in crimson robes. "Aha! A well now, well now, well now! A fellow arcanist! Please, do come in." As you cross the threshold into his home, a soothing bell tone sounds. "Oh, don't mind that. It's just a warding letting me know you don't have any active spell effects on you. Now, what can I do for you, young man?"

Everyone Else:
You walk to the armory, a squat, square building made of treated timber beams and cemented flagstone. Captain Anitah is currently standing in front of the building, giving directions to a small knot of town guardsmen. You approach and inquire concerning their needs for arms and armor, but the Captain shakes her head, "Thank you, really, but we are as armed and armored as is necessary. Most of these men are conscripted militiamen; farmers whose lands have been terrorized by the goblinoids and who need the work to feed their families. They wouldn't know what to do with a longsword, frankly. Their leather armor and longspear is the extent of their capabilities. But if you cannot be dissuaded, I'm sure that Speaker Wiston would not turn away a donation for hiring mercenaries. Now, if you would excuse me, I must attend to my duties."

DM:

Spoiler:
"Haha, all of that is certainly true, Father. I was just wondering if you had any specific information about the tribes in the area. I will relay your wares to the rest of my group, and I might be back here to buy some of them. Thank you for your time." After speaking with the priest, Dragox spends a short time in prayer and leaves a 5 gp offering in the plate, before heading back to meet the others.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

All but Dragox & Findor:
Watching Captain Anitah walk away, Adele copmments, "Well, that seems a bit short-sighted. There ought to be at least a cadre of more able militiamen who could be trained to fight with longswords. Farmers with spears are resistance in name only, if they are called upon to fight those hobgoblins." She sighs. "Well, let us hope it does not come to that. If we are successful, we may yet hold off Azarr Kul's forces from reaching the town." She looks to her companions. "Shall we go on to see the merchant?"

"And being a Halfling is such a terrible thing?" Adele smiles teasingly, reaching out to give Maysalkirii a playful nudge. "I suppose you are right: Our best plan to protect the inhabitants of Drellin's Ferry is to defeat the hobgoblins in the woods before they ever reach the town's defenses. Come; the merchant's warehouse should be the next building south, I believe."

Dragox:
You return to the tavern to find your companions missing. Inquiry with the innkeeper reveals they left perhaps half an hour before your arrival.

Adele, Maysalkirii, Narses:
You come upon what to all appearances should be a busy warehouse. Several workers sit idly on barrels and boxes, playing cards and chatting with each other. They give you a thumb inside the warehouse when you inquire for Iormel. You see a gaunt, darkly-dressed man with a ledger and pen, counting crates and taking inventory. He gives you a shrewd stare before greeting you, "Iormel's Warehouses. Iormel VanTassell, proprietor. Are you here to do business?"

Spoiler:
Dragox, knowing the group hasn't gotten far, first decides to head to the location of the arcanist to collect Findor. If Findor is not there, he will locate the druid previously discussed and see if the group has made it to that area.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

All but Dragox & Findor:
Adele smiles warmly at the man. "Indeed we are, good sir. We are but newly arrived in Drellin's Ferry and have been told that you are the most reliable and respected businessman in the town. We have acquired various weapons and suits of armor from the hands and backs of the hobgoblins threatening this area and expect to acquire more, as we have been officially authorized by the town Speaker to act on his behalf in combatting this threat. Have you any interest in purchasing these items from us for resale?"

Diplomacy 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 Add another +1 from the Charming trait, if applicable.

Adele, Maysalkirii, Narses:
Iormel raises an eyebrow, "Arms and armor, you say? Then they are undoubtedly scratched, dented, rusted, and tarnished from use. That will require extensive, costly repair. Not to mention the reek of hobgoblin that will need to be washed off. There are no potential buyers in Drellin's Ferry, so they will need to be transported by caravan to Brindol. That caravan will need provisions and security as well. Very costly, indeed." He turns back to counting his inventory and speaks into his ledger, "I will give you thirty-percent of their market value. Any more and it would be charity work." He gives you a sidelong glance, "Which I do not do. Do you accept?"

Male Human Monk 2/Fighter 4

Adele, Narses, DM:
Feek has a rank in appraise so I will assume he knows a little better.

Feek whispers to Adele and Narses-

It's a bad price, but it might be all we can get here...

A thought suddenly strikes Maysalkirii, and he grins.

Tell him we'll think about it and get back to him this evening? I just need a little time...Feek says with a grin.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

All but Dragox & Findor:
Adele listens to Feek's whispering, then turns back to Iormel. "We thank you very much for what I am sure is a fair and equitable offer which does justice to your hard-earned reputation; however, two of our group are not with us at the moment, and I am loath to make an agreement on their behalf without consulting with them first. Would you be so kind as to allow us until this evening to return with our decision?"

Diplomacy 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

Male Human Monk 2/Fighter 4

DM ONLY Please.:

Feek would like to investigate Iormel's Warehouse and his Home, looking specifically for anything suspicious or any 'skeletons' Iormel has in his closet. A.K.A Blackmail material. This is strictly under the cover and Feek will do his best to stay out of sight and keep his eyes peeled while 'investigating'. Some rolls-

Acrobatics if he has to make an entrance through a window etc.-

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Disable Device on any locked doors and other barriers, including traps he might find-

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29

Escape Artist to sneak into the locations via a small entrance, or to make a quick getaway-

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29

Perception Roll (General)

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Perception Roll (Traps)

If Feek gets into any major trouble and is about to be caught, he'll use his last 2nd level spell for the day to go Invisible

Adele i'm going to have a longer look about town and see if I can find out anything more. Meet you back in the tavern in the evening, before we take Iormel's offer?

DM:

Findor raises his eyebrow at being called a young man, considering he was probably older than the halfling, but does not mention this.

As you may have heard, the goblinoid assaults on this town have grown rather disconcerting of late. I and a group of stalwart companions have come at the bequest of the area's rulers to deal with this violent uprising.

Findor pauses to await the halfling's response.

Adele:
Iormel's lips purse ever so slightly before he shrugs, "Suit yourself. I will be here, of course." He turns back to his work cataloging the warehouse.

Maysalkirii:
Your investigation of Iormel's warehouse and private residence reveal nothing controversial. He appears to be a fastidious, severe man with little warmth in his life. The furnishings in his home are of superior quality. You find several stashes of coin (I'm assuming you are not interested in robbery at this point) and other portable wealth, representing several hundred pieces of gold in value. A review of financial papers at his home shows that he is rigid in his business dealings and does not hesitate to default on a borrower when valuable collateral is available. A thoroughly unpleasant man, but nothing you could hold against him.

Findor:
The halfling is delighted to hear of your group's exploits in helping to curb the growing goblinoid threat. You learn that he settled in Drellin's Ferry several years ago after a near-fatal brush during an adventure of his own. He makes a living selling potions and minor wondrous items to merchants and travelers.

Sertieren has available:

Scrolls (CL 5th)- dispel magic, fireball, invisibility, fly, mage armor, web.

Potions (CL 5th) - cat's grace, invisibility, fly.

Items (CL 5th) - bracers of armor +1, ring of protection +2

He can also be commissioned to scribe scrolls of 3rd level or lower.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

All but Dragox & Findor:
"Be very careful," Adele quietly cautions Feek before he leaves. "You don't have cover of darkness now, and I worry when you're out of sight." Then she turns to Narses. "Well, it looks like it's just the two of us going to see the druid. I believe we're going to have to cross the river. Did you notice if there's a boat or a ferry?"

All but Dragox & Findor:

Spoiler:
Looking up from his musing Narses looks from Adele to Maysalkirii, "Weeell.. I'm thinking our 'halfling' friend might need a lookout." he says rather interested in the gravel by his feet as he looks about, checking that noone is listening.

DM:

Findor fingers the scrolls, calling up a detect magic spell after attaining his host's permission.

"I was hoping you might have a scroll of shield available. I can make one myself, but my friends and I plan on departing in a few hours time."

Findor looks over the potions. One marked cleverly "Draught of inevitable ascension".

"Interesting. How much could I get you to come down on this potion of magical flight?"

Male Human Monk 2/Fighter 4

Everyone, later at the inn.:

Feek returns to the group shortly before they are due to meet Iormel. Addressing Adele, the Goblin mutters-

Nothing suspicious about this Iormel guy... He's a harsh competitor and a mean haggler but hes squeaky clean. At least we can be sure the goods won't end up in the hands of the hobgoblins again. Maybe try and haggle him up a little- we do have a couple of magical items among the loot after all.

I'm assuming everyone but Findor is at the inn, right?

Findor:
"Hmm... now the going market value of that potion is 750 gold pieces, but since you are a 'Friend of Drellin's Ferry,' oh how I hate that silly title the Speaker gives people, I will let you have it for... 475 gold pieces. Are you interested?"

Everyone Else:
You discover that there is no apparent means to cross the river to the island. A passing resident informs you that the druid values his privacy. While he does aid the townsfolk, he ensures that no boats are available to cross the river and goes so far as to stock the water with biting (though not lethal) slaughterfish to keep away trespassers. A small mailbox is set up on the town-side of the water. Requests for an audience or items are written on parchment and placed in the box.

DM:

Findor perses his lips.

"I'm afraid I don't have nearly that amount in coin. We have not yet had the opportunity to sell the armor and weapons from the hobgoblin's bodies before they were burned. I believe I might have something worthy of trade though."

Findor reaches into his beltpouch and pulls out the blue spinel. A clear blue crystal with only a small visible crack in the center of the stone. PIC

"This might be somewhere near the amount you are asking for. I can also promise that I will work as your apprentice or assistant for a day or two upon our return from the task at hand. We were promised merchants' credit upon completion of the task, but I hold goods and services in higher esteem."

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

All but Findor:
Adele looks up from the parchment and ink she has obtained from the innkeeper to pen a note to the druid. "Oh, I do hate haggling, Feek, but if you're sure...." She looks around the room. "Findor must certainly have met a kindred spirit in the local wizard to be chatting so long. They must be 'talking shop.' I'm sure it's pleasant for him to have a conversation with someone who can fully comprehend what he's talking about and has something intelligent to add to the conversation." She smiles and goes back to her writing.

DM:
Adele is writing a note of introdution to the druid, informing him that the PCs will be in the area to combat the hobgoblins and that any information he is able to share about their location or motivations would be greatly appreciated. She will be sure to ask about the name Azarr Kull and query whether the hobgoblins have any ancestral claim to these lands. Diplomacy check for her note 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

All but Findor:

Spoiler:
Att he inn, Dragox reports to the group the results of his meeting with the priest. "Unfortunately I didn't learn anything helpful about the local hobgoblins. The priest seemed skilled at creating scrolls, however, and had several available. He had scrolls of bless, cure moderate wounds, cure serious wounds, dispel magic, lesser restoration, and resist energy. He said he could make more scrolls of spells around that power level, if we wanted to commission any."

Findor:
Sertieren rubs his chin with his hand, then nods, "Tell you what, you can have it on an installment plan. I can take that pretty gem of yours now, and you can pay me again when you come back after looting some of those gobs. How does that sound?"

Adele:
Tomorrow morning you awaken to find a small envelope at the foot of your bed, lying on top of your blanket. It is printed on what appears to be fine strips of birch bark, with ink made of some type of berry juice. It reads;

Dear Adele,

I am unable to provide you with information concerning the location or motivation of the hobgoblin raiders at this time. I am also unable to comment on the nature of the name 'Azarr Kull' or ancestral claims of the goblinoid races in this valley. I apologize for whatever inconvenience this may cause you. I have, as of the writing of this letter, not left my island for approximately six years. Please be assured, though, that I will begin inquiries among the local flora and fauna regarding your questions.

Sincerely,
The Druid

Do you still wish to attempt to sell the hobgoblin equipment?

Male Human Monk 2/Fighter 4

Yeah. I'm hoping our charming Paladin can haggle a better deal though :P.

Female Halfling Bard/ Paladin (sacred servant) 7 (gestalt)

"If you're quite certain that Iormel's offer is unreasonably low," Adele says a bit reluctantly. "I certainly don't want to cheat anyone."

Adele will cast Eagle's Splendor before returning to Iormel's warehouse to complete the transaction, giving her a total Diplomacy bonus of +15. Dragox, do you want to come along for an Aid Another? I think you're the only other party member with a positive Charisma.

DM:

Findor strokes his chin as though in contemplation of the offer.

"That is a very fair and reasonable offer, and one I will gladly accept. Now... on to more important things: Spell exchange? I know some wizards make it a specific foundation not to allow other wizards to copy from their spellbook. But if I have something you can use I would be honored to see if you might have a spell in your grimoire I could copy into mine."

Findor hands over the sparkling spinel.

Unfortunately, the 1/2 orc was unable to help the halfling paladin shift the seller's mind in any way. Realizing he made a faux pas, he looked at Adele, " Er, I can wait outside, if you want."

Adele, Maysalkirii, Dragox:
Iormel gives you a hurt look. As much as a greedy miser can look hurt. "And you call yourselves do-gooders. Pah! Trying to weasel a gentleman out of his livelihood is more like it! Why I ought to report you to the Speaker!" He turns to the side and folds his arms. After a moment, he says out loud to the air, "Forty-five percent. Take it or leave it. I suggest you take it, since I'm the only person in half the valley who can buy your goods."

Findor:
Sertieren accepts the gem and hands you the potion. Hearing your question, he smiles, but shakes his head. "Sorry, friend, but I don't know you well enough to let you peek at my bloomers, so to speak. Perhaps after you have done some service for Drellin's Ferry I may feel more willing."

Narses:
Sitting for a time, you feel a *thock* on top of your head. A pine cone falls into your lap. It is attached to a small piece of parchment. Looking around, you see no obvious source of the small missile. Unfolding it, you read:

Dear Worshiper of Erastil,

You drew a very pretty picture. You should be proud.

I don't want to chat. Sorry!

Sincerely,

A Worshiper of Gozreh
