Male Human Traveling Salesman 2

Finally got around to writting up a better backstory for Sara. It's different for me cause Sara's not an adventurer. Usually my character have some sort of training or some drive to be a hero, but Sara is just living her life. So part of me feels like something is missing and the other part of me feels this is arguably one of my better character backstories. I also finally get around to naming Sara's siblings.

human Archaeologist

Okay, so I'm having a hell of a time trying to wrap my mind around my character concept (it's kind of like writer's block I guess), so I'm gonna try something new if you are okay with it.

New character idea completely. Let's try a tiefling. I'll try an asura spawn, and I'll roll for a variant ability and feature, and let the dice gods lead me.

1d100 ⇒ 90
1d100 ⇒ 96
So that's +2 to Wis and unnatural temperature. Hmm. Is that okay with you, Cyr? That's gonna start me with +2Dx, +4Wis!! and -2 Int. That's a pretty strong divine caster lean I'm seeing. I've never played an inquisitor before. Would that be okay?

Feel free to say no to whatever and we'll go from there. Somehow the halfling just wasn't working out for me no matter what I did

@CrusaderWolf - Some Thoughts:

1) It took me a little bit to "get it," but now that I'm thinking about it more, I like it. I picture him as one of many such agents across all of Cheliax, indeed the entire Inner Sea, and finding ways to direct your work to benefit Kyonin.

2) You don't have to answer now, but do keep in mind that even if you and your allies here are successful, Orrias will still be beholden to Kyonin. What if Queen Telandia asks you to do something that benefits Kyonin more than it does your new friends and allies? Again, don't worry about answering now, just want to give you a fair warning. :)

3) Does Orrias have particular feelings one way or the other about non-elves? Kintargo is a comparatively cosmopolitan city, and Kyonin elves seem to be more isolationist / supremacist.

4) I like the idea of him having an encounter with the Chelish military. I hadn't planned to incorporate much of their Navy into the story, since there is a local law enforcement body (The Dottari), especially since the simultaneous events of Hell's Vengeance would draw much of their military's attention. However, it's not something that I'll rule out! Thanks for giving me a fun NPC idea to work with.

5) Thanks also for Tira Kallen, and uncle Alliran. We'll work them into the story in some way. Is there any actual interest in Tira, or is it just information gathering? I'm assuming that she'll be your hook to get you into the protest at the beginning of the AP.

6) Keep me posted on the song choice! Not vital, but helpful for me to paint a picture of how you see your PC.

Ok, I've got Alexite's stats written up. Let me know if this looks good to you, Cyrioul, and I'll make up an alias!

@genericplayername: I love the write up! Thank you for putting that together. It pulls all the details together and synthesizes them well, and I'm looking forward to seeing what pushes her into rebellion against the city, not just her family.

Start looking at the part of the player's guide where you pick a reason to be at the protest at the beginning of the AP, and let me know what you decide!

Male Human Traveling Salesman 2

In all honesty, so am I. I realized that this morning driving to work that she's this great person but I don't really have a push for her to join other than what she feels is for the betterment of Kintago. I mentioned in the survey that she works with a small church of Ragatheil to take care of the citizens that the church and nobles cast aside. I'll have to see if anything kinda fits into this.

I'm really excited about her first combat encounter. She's used to killing animals and such but I can't wait to see how she handles killing another human.

edit: The one that seems to make the most sense to me is protesting the government. Since she's somewhat active in helping the needy in the city, she would be worried that Thrune's takeover could be a deathblow to these innocent people.

Mistress of the Maze

money: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11
Lets gamble on money.

@RobL8675309:
It's a valid build per Paizo rules, but I agree that it feels a little bit OP. You're giving up the ability to cast hideous laughter once per day to get a +1 bonus to will saves (and lots of other things). I like how asuraspawn are talked about in terms of being dedicated more to tradition than to deductive reasoning, so I'm guessing that you'd be latching on to that (?).

A few questions about choosing the inquisitor:
1) Why that class, instead of Cleric or Warpriest?
2) What deity would this character serve?
3) Asura are focused on destruction of religions and gods, in particular. Does that play into your character idea? Or is it just happenstance of birth?

As for the Unnatural Temperature, I'm thinking that your PC would radiate either significant amounts of heat or cold, such that being around - much less being in contact - with non-outsiders is particularly difficult. In the wilderness, it wouldn't be so bad - if it was radiating heat, it'd reduce the need for a campfire. :) But in the city, it means that no one could stand near this character in a crowd. That'll take some thought for how it will play out in the game...

So, I guess there are a lot of benefits to the first one, RP detractors to the latter. Pitch me some more ideas about this character!

@The Norv.- Thanks! Will offer thoughts tomorrow.

genericplayername: Sounds good!

MadScientistWorking: Good roll! Have fun shopping. :)

The Norv - real quick - did you mean courtesan's outfit or courtier's outfit? The former would be a ... curious choice. ;)

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male

Why so curious? Alexite is a lush, he wants to look good for the ladies. :)

I mean, I guess it depends on your interpretation...but I was reading "fine silk or satin garments tailored to complement your figure" as clothes that one could still go out in, not stuff only suitable for the interior of a brothel. The point is just that he doesn't typically wear rugged hiking-through-the-wilderness clothes (which the starting options tend to lean toward).

human Archaeologist

okay, changing tack has made a huge difference.

GM:

Quote:

A few questions about choosing the inquisitor:

2) What deity would this character serve?
3) Asura are focused on destruction of religions and gods, in particular. Does that play into your character idea? Or is it just happenstance of birth?

1) I feel that clerics are more about gaining converts than she is. She's not so much into philosophy/theology. Warpriest would definitely make her a better fighter (and cleric a better caster), but again, it just doesn't seem to fit the vibe. I feel like inquisitors are more the lone wolves, plays a little loose with doctrine, has their own personal sense of right and wrong (informed by faith, but not limited by it)

2/3) Calistria. She's out for revenge. Partly she wants revenge against the circumstances of her birth and the way she's been treated throughout life. She blames most of this on the house of Thrune and the Asmodean church. If Aroden were still around, Cheliax would have been a more accepting place, and she may have had a better life (and she may not have even been born normal). Eventually, she may want to bring down many gods, but she's focused mostly on Asmodeus (and Thrune) for now. The asura urge for the destruction of the gods is in her (she sees it as freedom from the tyranny of religion). She doesn't care much for most of the gods with the exception of those that may actually benefit her. Calistria fits for the whole revenge aspect. She's also accepting of Shelyn because she hopes to be a famed performer some day. Most of the other ones, she'd be happy to have dead. She isn't the brightest bulb and doesn't really see any contradictions in her preference for 1 god over others.

Regarding the weird temperature thing, if it's going to be an area effect thing, I'd rather not have it. She still looks non-human anyway (bluish skin, prominent brow ridges, etc.). What I was thinking when I rolled it is it may be that she's ice-cold to the touch, not so much as to do people damage, but so that nobody wants to touch her for long. Skin to skin contact is uncomfortable to most people, meaning only people with cold resistance (like other tieflings) can touch her. And since she's kind of racist against other tieflings, it's just another example of why she hates her life and wants revenge against the universe.
Tell me what you think.

@The Norv - Just wanted to make sure! It's not usually a choice that adventurers make. :) More in a minute.

@RobL8675309 - here's the link to your submission. More in a minute.

Further thoughts:

1) Sounds good! Makes sense to me.

2) Calistria is perfect for the story. Go for it!

Temperature) I wouldn't say area effect - that's too much. I think your read is right on what having skin that feels too cold is like. Being racist against other tieflings is interesting, but does set her up for having trouble making a connection with any of them. Glad she's taken to Strea, though - that'll help her in the long run.

Otherwise, it's looking good! The more I think about the wisdom bonus, I would just ask that you keep the total number for your wisdom score at or under 18 at this time. It gives you lots of points to play with that others don't have, but we're going to have fun making sure that Indra has a hard time getting along with others. And that'll be a different kind of fun for the rebellion. :) Go ahead and start statting up, then send me what you've got! I'll share a few more thoughts on the submission later this evening after I give it a fuller read.

@The Norv - Further Thoughts on Stat Sheet:

Looks good so far! The flavor of the character seems well represented by the statistics, and I'm glad that you picked Improved Unarmed Strike. Is that on the way to something else, or just an end in and of itself to represent his somewhat pugilistic nature?

The balance of traits is reasonable. Your will save is poor enough already that I'm not worried about the offset from Fortified Drinker. Let's keep track of how often he's having a drink - if it's too much, there might be an moderate addiction issue to worry about.

Is he someone to openly carry a longsword around the city? Or does he just know where it is in case he has to grab it?

Love the outfit and cologne choices, plus the cards and loaded dice. Great flavor choices! As is the stillgut.

Keep me on target with your AC re: Heart of the Streets. Wouldn't want a hit to land if you've actually got the ability to avoid. However, I think you may have shorted yourself on your favored class bonus. You should have one more HP or one more skill point, right? Skills = 2 for class +1 INT, +2 background skills.

Otherwise, it looks good! Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll get back to you.

Discussion with Cyrioul:
Thanks! Glad you like it. The IUS is indeed mostly for flavor/so that he's always armed, but it might be handy for picking up Improved Grapple if I want to later on. When we're in situations where weapons are allowed, I'm also figuring he'll always want one hand free to use Dirty Tricks; since he needs a high DEX for his AC anyway, I figure this way he can ultimately start two-weapon fighting with a blade accompanied by a swift kick to a sensitive spot.

For the sword, he'll only carry it if he expects to use it or if he's allowed to (was that outlawed in a decree? I don't remember off-hand). He would probably always keep a dagger on his person somewhere, though.

I'll do my best with the AC; don't worry, between Heat of the Streets, Combat Expertise, and the dueling dagger it's a fair amount for me, too!

Oh, and the FCB is intentional--he took the human optional FCB for fighter, that's where his +1 CMD vs. disarm and grapple come from!

@The Norv:
Sounds good! There are no restrictions on carrying weapons openly, just wanted to make sure I got a sense of him. Sleight-of-hand-ing a dagger isn't a bad plan, just wnated to see if the longsword was only for, "I'm going adventuring!" moments or for general wear.

As for two-weapon fighting with the swift kick to the nethers - go for it! Devils probably have them, right? :) Seriously, though, are you picturing an increase to Dex at 4th level so you can pick up TWF? Cool beans if so - so far, you're looking like the primary melee fighter.

Re: FCB - Got it! That makes more sense now.

As for all the combat variables, let's try to track that on the combat map via Comments on the google slide. I'll try to be good about keeping that up to date for all of you, actually (easier to track HP there, perhaps, than here on the boards).

Male Human Traveling Salesman 2

these are some cool designs. I'm having fun thinking of how Sara's gonna be around some of you. Especially Indra and Alex since I have this idea of Sara being fairly nonviolent and the two of them don't seem to shy away from it when needed.

Hi, everyone,
Thanks for the very fun character creation so far! I'm grateful for this process - it's not one that I've done for PBPs before, and I think that it's helping create a sense of investment for you AND for me, and that's a great thing. :)

I'd like us to consider starting the AP on Nov. 1, if we aren't ready before then. That'll give me this week and the next few days after that to pre-write some of the bigger posts that don't require much editing (Yay, monologues and area descriptions!), and give y'all a chance to finalize your PCs.

Two items for us to chat about over the coming week:

Equipment[b]: Some of you have quite a bit of it, and others not so much. Either way, you'll be acquiring a lot of stuff over the course of the AP. Do you find that tracking equipment in your aliases is easy, or would it be easier to track it on a Google spreadsheet? The latter would be easier for me, especially if I could check on all of your equipment in one place (and edit it if you pass by a group of pick-pocketing street urchins). [b]Any thoughts on how you'd like to manage inventory?

Combat: So far, two of you are fairly well committed to ranged combat, and one to melee combat. Of the remaining two, one is (likely) an Alchemist, and one Investigator. I'm behind on sending our new Ironfang Invasion GM an invitation to join the table (next on my list for tonight), but just be aware that you might want to make sure you can be ready if you get into the mix of melee.

Also, per a thought in one of the spoilered conversations above - I'll be putting a lot of your combat information on the Google Slides that we'll use for tracking combat. It'll help me keep the info in one place (like HP totals, status effects, etc.). Just help me double check in case any of these are out of date.

Thanks!

I have a short sword as well for melee as well as Ruina that'll probably be my body guard until she trusts Sara on her own with combat. Spreadsheet would probably be best for our loot list. I'll take a crack at maintaining it if you want since you probably have enough on your plate with running the AP. I'll study yours from ironfang and do my best.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cad 2
Stats:

Quick post just to tag this with my alias for Alex!

Thanks - I've prepped the loot spreadsheet here, just need y'all to fill it in. I'll make sure it's linked at the top.

I was thinking more of what your PCs are carrying on their persons, something like Cyrioul's personal gear tracker from Ironfang. I won't require it, but I've found it to be helpful.

I'm so happy you didn't post that you made this and I just wasted my time on it. I know it'll be awhile until it's needed but at least it's ready for when we get to it.

As for the personal gear tracker, it seems simple enough. I'll toss it together and copy that encumbrance formula you have. i need to show that to my wife, she loves playing with excel and would probably get a kick out of it.

Also I have no problem hosting a personal gear page for everyone if they'd like. They're just responsible for keeping it up to date on their own. This way they don't have to muck with the formulas if they don't want.

@GM CYR:
Ya know, I looked at the Urban Infiltrator. The main thing that bothers me is loosing the stalwart ability. I just think that's such a cool ability, I'm not sure I want to lose it. I was thinking about the regular Infiltrator archetype too. I hate to loose stern gaze, but the ability to have your alignment appear as something else might be kind of useful. I like the Heretic archetype, too, which doesn't take away much from the base class.
I was also thinking that at some point this character may drop some levels in unchained rogue. The free finesse training (and sneak attack) would easily make her a capable melee combatant. At the moment, I'm torn between grabbing weapon finesse, which is a perfectly logical choice, and monstrous mask (boosts intimidate by 5 against all humanoids) which is just awesome

Silver Crusade

Okay, so a day late, but here's the skeleton of the character. I'm gunning for a solid jack-of-all-trades who can reliably assist in a lot of roles--combat, buffing, party-facing. Without further ado:

That makes sense - don't give up something you'll want in the future!

As for Infiltrator vs. Heretic, it depends on whether you want the Wisdom bonus to be to Diplomacy or Stealth. As you say, you give up a little less to take Heretic, but being able to detect as, say, Lawful Evil, could be helpful at certain points in the future.

Oh, the monstrous mask sounds like so much more fun! How would you describe what this looks like? Really play up the haughtiness of the character? A really sinister grin? I'm curious!

@Orrias:

Thanks! Looking over it, a few thoughts...

1) Looks like you built with a 20 Pt buy - sorry, I thought I had clarified in an earlier post that this would be a 15 point buy game. If that really throws off your concept, let me know!

2) Skills: could you put an * next to your Bluff and Diplomacy to remind me to check against the conditions of your "Student of Philosophy" trait? Nothing major, just helps me out. Thanks!

3) Traits: I would like one trait to be a campaign trait, if possible. Is there one that fits with your character concept?

4) Hedonistic: Love it! It's going to be a great bit of irony that your character has gotten so much out of his study of Cheliax that he's a little too commited to it's finer pleasures. :) There's a lot of downtime in this AP - just make a list for me of his 7 favorite pleasure-seeking activities, and unless you want to go into that for every day (I'm guessing not) we'll just assume that he has a standard thing he loves to do every day of the week. "On Sundays, I like to ..."

5) Equipment: Did you roll for funds and I missed the post? If so, just show me where. Otherwise, it looks like you've got a starting average of 105 GP for Investigator, but you've got 230+ GP in gear.

Let me know what you think!

@GM Cyrioul:

Corrected the point-buy, swapped Defensive Strategist for Historian of the Rebellion, and I'll put in a box for all the self-love Orrias showers himself with during the week ;)

As for equipment, that was more of a wish list, I realize not all of that will make it to the final cut. Gold: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2) = 12 x10 = 120gp.

I'll get you an answer to the other background questions as soon as I can, the theme song is proving vexing.

@Orrias:

I was thinking of something for the monstrous mask like her eyes not reflecting, giving her a creepy appearance that's hard for people to put their fingers on, but is definitely disconcerting. I kind of like your haughtiness suggestion though. That sounds kinda cool. Like maybe her sneers contain almost a hint of the asura, unsettling people around her. Could also go with a mix of the 2, where her eyes normally reflect, but when she intentionally glares at people, they can feel the weight of her anger as a destructive force

There we go. I submitted my ideas on the Google form.

My character concept is Pip "the Slip" Fenstrad, a halfling satirist and comedian.

Now I just need to settle on whether to make him a Sorcerer with the Maestro bloodline (the option I'm leaning towards) or just go with a Court Bard.

Male Human Traveling Salesman 2

Sorcerer sounds like it would be more fun and i don't think we have a full caster so it could prove useful

Hey, all - thanks! More thoughts from me sometime this weekend. I finally finished a full read-through of the AP today. IT'S AMAZING! I hope that I can do it justice. Family visiting now - hope you all have a good one. More thoughts on your PCs soon!

@Vayelan

@Indra:

Monstrous Mask ideas sound good - a really unsettling sneer, couple with an icy glare (to match the temperature aura), would just weird the hell out of me!

@Vayelan - I concur on Sorcerer, insofar as the company does not currently have a 9-level spellcaster (though there are already a few 6-level spellcasters/alchemy users). A very magical group! However, if you're really feeling bard, I imagine that we can make it work. :)

@Vayelan:
Regarding your background submission:
1) Sounds great - we'll handwave the details of the legal loophole ("Eh, it's complicated. Do you want to talk to the devil that wrote it?") unless it really comes to the fore in the story.

2) GREAT actor choice. :)

3) Good to have the parents nearby, but too busy to interfere with the story much.

4) Is Soria a halfling as well? Or another race?

5) Thanks for the tie-in to Shelyn. Not much there yet in the rest of the party, so it'll be good to have solid ties to those allies.

6) Thanks for the clear and focused goals and purpose!

7) Again, between Maestro sorcerer and Court Bard, I think that the maestro sorcerer makes a bit more sense with the tie in to Shelyn and the Opera House. However, sell me more on Court Bard if you really like it!

So I've started my profile update. Also, I changed my characters name just because I like this better. Im going to update it even more but if you have any questions about what I currently have feel free to ask.

Male Halfling Sorcerer 2, AC 13 (T 13, FF 11), CMD 10; Fort +2, Ref +4, Will +8; +4 on all Fear saves; Init +2, Perception +2, HP 10/11 Sorcerer 2

I've got my alias profile started. I went with Maestro Sorcerer.
I still need to fill in and finalize some details.

@GM Cyrioul:
I envisioned Soria as a human, a literal big step sister for Pip. I've also been thinking that her parents, clerics of Shelyn, probably served as surrogate parents for Pip since his own parents would not be able to visit as regularly as they would like.

@Nerris:

Thanks! I can tell there's a few basic things to finish updating, so I'm not too worried. A few questions:

1) Could you make sure to list your archetypes for me? I remember them now, but when I check them later I don't want to forget which ones we talked about.

2) Can you explain the entries under Senses? What's special-senses or magical sense? They seem like placeholders, but I just want to be sure.

3) Human-Raised + Skilled: I'm not sure how I feel about this combination. There's a thread where one of the developers, Mark Sifter, argues that they both have the same effect and that the Advanced Race Guide has a rule that you can't get the same racial trait twice. You can read the thread here. I'm somewhat in agreement that it's not perfectly clear, but since this is a home game (not PFS) AND you're basically giving up a lot of melee survivability with this character, it won't hurt for you to have an extra skill point per level.

4) The Burning Assurance trait comes from being born into / raised among the Sandkin Half-Orcs of Osirion, Katapesh, or another desert land. How does this fit into your backstory? Also, this doesn't appear to make Diplomacy a class skill - how did you get to a +7 bonus?

5) Let me know if you would like any suggestions on languages to choose with your point in linguistics and your intelligence bonus, otherwise have fun choosing!

6) What are you thinking for a campaign trait? Your second trait?

7) Don't forget to pick a "reason for being at the protest" from the player's guide. It only applies to the opening scene, but it's helpful!

Thanks!

@Pip Fenstrad:

1) Thanks re: Soria. That's good to know, and good to draw in a family element, too.

2) Keep me posted on character sheet updates, and I'll take a look again soon. Thanks!

Hello, everyone, and happy Halloween Eve!

In anticipation of our scheduled start date, I have created the first post in the Gameplay thread. I don't expect you to be ready to go ahead and post there until our intended start date (November 1), however I wanted to make certain that it was in place for you.

Please go ahead and post there when you are ready, and to help you add the thread to your campaigns page. I only anticipate that you'll have to be ready to start rolling for your PC on Wednesday or Thursday.

Thank you - keep sending me ideas as they come to you!
