Was it luck or some cosmic irony that caused two enslaved halflings to birth a free son? Lem and his pregnant wife, Filu, were accompanying their masters from the Tanessen estate on a trip to Vyre, north of Kintargo, when their son was born. Owing to a bizarre confluence of the conflicting laws between the City of Masks and the Silver City, and his birth falling on a particular holiday, the law that enslaved his parents held no power over Pip.
However, this same freedom meant that he could not stay with his family. The Tanessens issued an ultimatum: Lem and Filu could only keep the child if they submitted him to servitude. They refused, and when he was only a couple weeks old, Pip’s parents surrendered him to Songbird Hall.
As he grew, the Shelynites found the boy had a sharp mind, particularly for words and language. They fostered this talent, hoping to steer him towards poetry and lyricism. Instead, Pip’s inclinations directed him towards satire and comedy. Any disappointment they felt dissipated as they came to appreciate the smiles and laughter the halfling child brought. Likewise, the priests also offered what tutelage they could when Pip’s magical talents manifested, but the unpredictable and arcane nature of his power hampered their efforts. He was allowed to practice his magic independently, although they provided guidance to ensure he appreciated the responsibility of his gift.
A pair of Shelynite clerics, the Yolucross family, served as surrogate parents for Pip. They raised him alongside their daughter, Soria, and the two grew to be the best of friends. Even in adulthood, after Pip left the temple, they remained close and helped each other with their crafts. Soria served as a test audience for his jokes and stories, while Pip acted as a model for the clothes she created.
As an adolescent, Pip took an apprenticeship of sorts with Nandy Crissali. The bookstore owner quickly grew frustrated with her magic’s differences from those of her would-be student. Nevertheless, she kept him around as a shop assistant out of respect for his skill with literature. Rumors that Crissali actually finds Pip funny remain unconfirmed.
Pip currently rents a tiny tenement apartment in Old Kintargo, but he rarely spends time there. Most often he is found performing in Aria Park, visiting his parents in the Greens or his adoptive parents on Temple Hill, or working, reading, and drafting at Crissali’s Fine Tomes.
Appearance and Mannerisms:
Pip has short, dark hair that always looks like a sleeping porcupine. His face is defined by a sharp nose and chin. When out and about, he wears elaborate, custom clothes created by Soria. The pair like to scheme ways for her designs to skirt the Fourth Proclamation against fine embroidery.
Irreverent and seldom without a smile, Pip is a jokester, but he hates cruelty. In fact, he often clarifies this for people by explaining the difference between a jokester and a prankster. He wears his heart on his colorful sleeve, and his daily goal is to brighten the lives of those around him. Ultimately, though, he dreams of freeing his parents from their servitude.
