Broken glass. Blood. Water.

These are your first memories. A scrawny man struggles to see you through his broken glasses as he hoists your uncoordinated body onto a bright orange...uh...life-raft, yeah, that's what it's called.

After a short conversation with him, you learn that you are the pride of NATO's allied forces. The result of a genetic experiment to enhance human DNA, making a better soldier to fight in World War III.

This is just the hook to garner interest and to save a place for this idea until I get back to my home base. Quick rules for characters: any humanoid race as long as you can argue that it is an improvement on humanity. Any class whose abilities are INATE. Anything you can do has to be a result of your improved genetics (i.e. no item-based magic). The rest of the details will follow.


I am intrigued. Will you be allowing an 3pp?

3pp and psionics subject to approval, link required. I want the PCs to be the only thing that is different from this world. Maybe a little higher technology, but not really.

Level 5 to start. 15 point-buy. 5 characters max including a friend of mine (so four more slots)

Classes I talked about. You can use anything that isn't dependent on an item for class abilities (spell components for spellcasters, spellbook for wizards, familiar for witches, holy symbol for cleric, etc.). If there are paizo (or approved 3pp) rules for getting around the need for these things, feel free.

Re-flavoring: I want to avoid changing rules for classes. Original stuff is always iffy, and I haven't done it enough to be comfortable with it. HOWEVER, if you can find 3pp rules for something like that (or if you just want to be an oracle of bones, say); let me know.

No gestalt. As for cyborgs I want to avoid them; in this future, technology is advanced, but not advanced enough yet to interact with the human system (outside of like really complicated and expensive auto-mail-esque prosthesis). That being said, if there's a 3pp technopath-esque character, shoot me a link.

Elans are definitely an improvement on humanity. 100% fluff match too.

Path of War doesn't require anything but a weapon to function.
Speaking of weapons, what rules are used for guns?
15pb is too low for anything that's not a full caster. You are basically inviting a band of wizards and clerics sorcerers and oracles.

What will be the campaign's theme? I don't think I can suspend my disbelief enough to play combat-focused game set in modern world with Pathfinder rules.


Elans would work well in this setting, yes.

I already approved psionics in general, it's the classes that require approval.

From what I can tell, Path of War will also work, but again, individual character choices, classes, etc. will still be subject to approval.

Modern Firearms Rules

15 pb is exactly what I want for this realistic-ish campaign. A team full of full casters will be unwise in a world full of modern firearms. A low point-buy fighter will just have to sacrifice his less important stats as with any other low point-buy adventure.

The theme is action/adventure: a good mix of fighting, problem solving, and resource management awash in role play and storytelling. If that's going to be an issue, feel free not to apply.


My first thought is an Aasimar Garuda-Blooded Inquisitor. Would that fit your concept?


Eh, doesn't look too modern. Maybe actual D20 modern weapons? And altered massive damage rules? There are few other suggestions here.

I agree the weapon selection in my list is wanting. I was going to use it as a guide for actual modern weapons. Thank you for the links, it should help me stat those weapons which will be included in the game. And thank you especially, Lord Foul II, that will come in very handy.

Now for what you've all been waiting for, the official breakdown.

Character Creation:

Number of Characters: 3-5, including my friend, so 2-4 open slots

Classes: Any paizo which doesn't require an item to function (see above); psionics and 3pp are allowed upon approval

Deities: Don't concern yourself with picking a deity. You will not have been taught that your power comes from elsewhere from your AKUs. Mechanically, your Domains/Inquisitions/Mysteries will be the same, but the power originates in your own genetic enhancement.

Races: Any humanoid that can be seen as an improvement on humans OR human, most level 5 pathfinder characters, even if non-magical humans, would probably be considered superhuman.

Alignment: Up to 6 conflict points

Level: 5

Point-Buy: 15

HP: Max all

Background: You DO NOT have a background, you are a new creation. HOWEVER, your character will be given its Apt Knowledge Upload (AKU) in the first moments of the game. This is an Interface-from-Chuck-esque information download that you have been genetically predisposed to learning very quickly. This is how you have level 5 skills and languages when you're no more than an hour old.

Languages: Real world languages. No such thing as "common." The scientists who created you speak english, german, and french collectively if you want a starting point, otherwise they could've torrented Rosetta Stone to get you whatever language they need you to have.

Feats: see classes, and you can't start with story feats

Traits: traits should be innate, or teachable via your AKU (if you have questions feel free to ask)

Spells: see classes; also, you get eschew materials as a free feat. Spells requiring expensive components do require those components. (For the purposes of this game 1 gp= $58). That being said, if it doesn't exist in this world, you can't buy it. Duh.

Money & Equipment: You have no money, you have no equipment. You will be able to use what you find if you find it. If you acquire money, you can spend it at a store (I'll be using shopping.google.com for base prices).

I'll be tracking food, water, and carrying capacity. Not to worry, I'm not above air-dropping MREs.

If I missed something, follow PFS rules.

Gameplay:

I’m expecting a post from everyone at least every other day, but the faster we post, the faster it goes. I get that weekends and holidays can be slow, nbd. I personally should be on every day-ish. If you’re going to have to bail (even just for a while), gimme some notice so I can have someone pinch hit for you/GMNPC you without there being a huge pause in gameplay.
My style is fairly sand-boxy, and since it's real-world, that could get fun.

As far as maps go, I’ll be on Google Draw.

Time will be kept by player action/GM judgement (each move takes 6 seconds, more if indicated—like if you take 20 or summon an eidolon or what have you).

Recruitment is open for a week from today. I don't need a full character sheet for submission. Just race, class, feats, traits, and any goals you might have.

I wouldn't mind playing as a cleric with a few birth defects due to random chance, one of them being a birthmark in a curious shape.

Just wondering whether you'd be willing to allow some homebrew of mine. It trades out some things for more domains, under appreciated abilities which I'd like to give some more love. Confident it's not overpowered. The fluff- being able to tap into some of the powers from a few different gods- seems suitable for a birth-defect genetically engineered weapon.


The UDTs, WWII's equivalent of the SEALs, were informally known as "frogmen." This time--due to genetic manipulation--the nickname is somewhat literal. UDT1114K, called "Oodie" for short, is a grippli sorcerer with the aberrant bloodline. He has Agile Tongue, Expanded Arcana, and Weapon Finesse as feats, and his traits are Havoc of the Society and Swamp Rebel.


Another question. What's the state of the world we will be playing in?

Flavor: Vivì has been genetically engineered to grant her an uncanny ability to focus her body and mind on specific tasks for a limited amount of time. For instance, she can increase the blood flow to her muscles to inflict improved damage, or sharpen her visual acuity to hit better, or increase her agility to avoid being hit, or strengthen her resilience to resist mental and physical threats. She can even make her muscles vibrate so quickly that sometimes her opponents actually see TWO of her instead of one. Her improved ability to read facial and body language allows her to catch lies, intent and deception quite easily, and although she may look nice and harmless if she so chooses, she is actually quite terrifying when her power is unleashed.

Description
She stands some 5'4" tall , seem to be about 70lb, She is small and fast, with very intelligent eyes. Black orb like eyes and long Black Hair. She Carrys a side arm and only has on some kind of Jump Suit.

Flavor: Annara is a genetically engineered Elan Replicate, In this units head is Bio-Lattice (TM) that gives it direct access to ZPE, thought a means of 'Engrained Energy patten templates' or Powers. It can manifest a number of seemingly incredible ability's. Such as shifting it's body mass to such a point it can literally walk on water, or lift itself into the air. It can also condense ZPE and focus it to devastating effect. Its censesurim systems can read the low level energy in the brain and map it out so as to be able to read the information in a Bio mind. One of this models key features is the capacity when programmed to manifest Telekinetic and telepathic powers. Allowing the model to over come any language barriers and move objects at will. The Unit has also been made with the capacity to self reaper and self energize. Its Bio mesh has been programmed with an an extensive database giving It the capacity to recall information. The Unit is internally armoured and has the latest Bio reconfigure system. Allowing it to alter aspects of its body from and functions. Last of all is her ability to crush the minds of living things to the point they die. All this can be done unseen.

All in all the Annara Alpha Z is a state of the art system, made to last and do that task at hand.


Yeah, sorry Lord Foul. If you want you can multiclass and use (some, if not all) multiclass archetypes. Also Hybrid classes are open.

@Arkwright, you might want to go back over the rest of the thread. Clerics are a no-go since they need a holy symbol to cast spells, and none of the PCs start with any items at all including clothing. If you want to go Oracle, however, your archetype does seem balanced enough for my campaign.

@orionbasher, as I've said before, the world is at war yet again. WWIII is being fought between NATO members and the United Republic of the People (URP) a unification of China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam, and Cuba. The start of the war was their successful plot to usurp the democratic government of Russia. In so doing, they helped the communist party in Russia rebuild the former USSR with the intention of helping them reclaim the former Soviet Union. It has now been seven years and the majority of Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary serve as the front lines. Is there anything more specific you were wondering about?

@Jaime, Vivi looks good so far. I was going to say with your character, it's cool if the wings aren't vestigial, but since no human has ever flown with wings before, you wouldn't be able to learn that from your AKU, so you'd at least start with very bad flying skills (you probably would anyway, but I would not be above giving you a "newborn penalty" if somehow the rules allowed you to fly really well as is).

As far as "more specific weaponry rules" are concerned. I'm going to use these rules for firearms, thanks to Lord Foul for showing them to me. Paizo rules apply for all other weapons. If you need more info, let me know.

New Description
Annara stands some 5' tall, small by human standards today. She looks around 20 years old, Wright around 70lb, very low body fat, she looks like a gymnast. She moves fast, seems very intelligent. Black orb like eyes and long Black Hair, pail shin that seems to shine at times, like alabaster. Her designed equipment is a simple black jumpsuit, boots, over coat, 8mm Nato Side arm, P91 MG and combat knife.

Flavor:
Annara is a genetically engineered Vat grown Replicant. With a very high level of purely genetic enhancements, most notably in psionic gifts. A NATO top secret research project 'ELAN' was set up some years ago to research previously underestimated theories of psychic abilities to a far more seriously level of study. After sifting 100,000s of human DNA profiles they pinpoint genes associated with true psionics. Then isolated them and combined them. The result of this research was Annara Bio Relicant. Combined with the AUK system it is hoped The Annara Unit will turn the tide of war.

Angi is the result of an experiment to work control of fire into the genome. Subtle alterations to her genotype allow her to take in air and, using a mixture of chemicals within her body, convert it to fuel that can then be ignited and ejected in multiple ways.

Given that she was just made, there's really not much else to say... other than that she is a girl and would really like some clothes now, please and thank you, even if her creators were kind enough to upload enough information on nature to let her know what could or couldn't be set on fire.


@GM- If you look closer, in the top part of my post I listed my intention to take the Birthmark trait, which lets me use an oddly-shaped birthmark as my divine focus. Seemed to fit an imperfect perfect weapon. Thoughts?

Would that be acceptable? I'd be taking maneuvers from Solar Wind, Steel Serpent and Veiled Moon, as they are the disciplines that allow for ranged attacks.

The "Celeste-Soutien" prototype is engineered and ready for trial runs. The original request was for a front-line support unit capable of increasing infantry survivability in difficult-to-reinforce areas of heavy fighting. Flavor and Statblock are in the profile, while appearance and personality are currently in production.


@Vivi, mechanically your character is ready to roll! With the flavor though, I feel like copy cat would work differently, maybe a psychic change of perception, or the ability to augment the suggestibility of your opponents. Just because the vibrating technique would suggest you could move incredibly fast, but you don't use that ability other than to make "copies" of yourself and that doesn't make sense. Unless I'm misunderstanding your flavor.

Also, I see the psicrystal is a manifestation of your psionic ability, but seeing as how you've done nothing so far in history, you won't start the game with it or any of its feats and PC bonuses. @Arkwright, totz sorry...I didn't connect the dots(/click your link). That works to a point, but that would include an aspect into my game that I hadn't yet considered: religion. Depending on what deity you choose (I would let you choose any deity from any religion worshipped on earth, with special attention to those worshipped in Germany, France, and the U.K., and I would work the stats for that deity), that deity would've intervened during your creation and maturation to give you that marking and guide your genetic engineering...Alright, I'll allow it, if only to see what you come up with! Intriguing!

@Nowhear, I'm gonna say no in general to using racial archetypes outside of the race. However, someone asked me earlier if you could use Race Builder, and I think I forgot to answer. The answer is yes with a maximum RP of 17 (since I'm allowing aasimars, it seemed only fair). IF you make a race similar to the one which owns the racial archetype (physiologically speaking), then yes, feel free to take it.

We'll also be using the modern path rules for armor as a launching point. There's a wider selection than that in the near-ish future, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, i.e. in-game.

Also some more specific flavor regarding the AKU: I'm aware that not all of you are aware of Chuck, go watch it, but in the meantime, what I meant was...
The AKU's are pretty much a series of photographs with embedded data. There are people alive in the world who are capable of learning information from images like this (albeit very few at a time, but it's there so...). In my mythology, the genes associated with this ability have been isolated and are standard in each of the products of Project Ingenue (a.k.a. the PCs). Therefore whatever skills and knowledge with which they need to be proficient to fill their desired role can be uploaded into their minds simply by showing them a video made up of data-embedded images.

These videos were saved from the sinking ship, and they will be shown you in the opening post. Beyond that you will no longer need to interact with your AKUs. For spells and powers which require "meditation" or "prayer", etc. to regain uses etc.; the meditation will be on the memory of the necessary images from the AKU.

At any time when you need to maintain psionic focus for an effect, you can use your psicrystal’s psionic focus instead, as long as the crystal is within 5 feet of you. Psionically focusing your psicrystal works just like focusing yourself. The psicrystal cannot focus itself—only the owner can spend the time to focus the crystal.

That means she can focus her Psi-crystal and then use that to power talents, while keeping her own focus in place. So she is not limited to on talent running at a time.

GM: thanks for the feedback! I understand where your doubts re. copycat flavor come from, although I hesitate to make it a kind of "illusion" or "mind affecting" since that would imply a save to disbelieve or resist. Perhaps it could be flavored as a minor psychic trick to manifest her astral self?

Edit: actually, Vivì can and does indeed move incredibly fast for a limited amount of time (expeditious retreat spell). :-)

I think this is the best way to go as its simple
she has NO proficiency in armour at all so unless its a
Leather Jacket, Sport Padding or light Undercover Shirt.
she is not going to be wearing any Armour. She was designed as
a Command and Infiltration unit not a front line combat unit.
Its all about tactics and brains with her.

Because inertial armor is composed of psychokinetic force, incorporeal creatures can’t bypass it the way they do normal armor. Your inertial armor can be invisible or can appear as a colored glow, at your option. The armor bonus provided by inertial armor does not stack with the armor bonus provided by regular armor, Augment: For every 2 additional power points you spend, the armor bonus to Armor Class DR increases by 1.

Backstory: Greece's contribution towards the NATO super soldier program was Project Poseidon, seeking to dig up the DNA of the great heroes of myth and infuse it into embyros, thus creating a champion for the modern era. The emphasis of this program was perfection; precisely controlling all external factors to accurately eke out a perfect combination of strength, dexterity and ferocious ruthlessness. The scientists thus had no explanation when their only embryo to reach maturation, Subject #47868, bore a tall scarlike birthmark covering the right side of his face in the shape of a flickering flame. During the post-maturation tests, he was also found to be of no more than average strength and dexterity, and his temperament- far from being 'ferocious', 'ruthless' or 'brave' was rather shy, cautious and compassionate in the battlefield theoretical scenarios proposed to him. What stopped him from being declared a failure was his ability to tap into mythic forces only predicted and contemplated by the maddest and most unjustified of historical analysis papers. Through patterns of thought Grunt felt his mind instinctively moving through, he could free his allies or grant them supernatural luck, heal them or summon fantastic creatures. With the deadline for deployment looming, they risked the inaccurate AKU, untested and unanticipated subject, and hoped for the best; while the scientists quickly started shifting responsibilities and job titles.
Personality: His body imperfect, his abilities defying logic, his AKU chiefly involving a million different ways to decapitate and kill others, Subject #47868 (prematurely named Grunt) is a shy man in a world of bold soldiers. But to survive, and to find out exactly what he is and what his purpose... he is going to do everything he can to keep himself and his new allies alive.
