ProfPotts:
I went with the attack because I thought inflicting damage on the grappler imposed a penalty on their grapple checks. Don't know why I thought that, though. If it's okay, I will consider a possible replacement character. I have a dwarven druid I absolutely love from a failed game, and now that they're out and about and away from the baronial household, an outside character wouldn't be out of the question.

ProfPotts:

Silently the Redwyrm knight directs his faithful steed toward the barely visible assailant, striking at him yet again with his magically charged falcata, while Argos presses the attack as well...

Rinse and repeat: 5ft step, arcane strike

Garrett's Attack:1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 1 = 14 (higher ground)

Argos (Hoof):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Ok...apparently Argos is pissed off. :)

Zurladew pads after the other caster, weaving his hands in front of him. With a snarl, Zurladew fires a cone of flashing, clashing colors, his invisibility fading as he does. He then moves away, trying to conceal his slight frame in the swirling mist.

One Color Spray, coming right up - DC 17, then move action away from his ambush, and attempting to hide

The Exchange

Sir Jaymin:
I imagine you thought that because any damage inflicted by the AoO triggered by attempting a combat maneuver without the right Feat gets added to the penalty to initiate that maneuver; that doesn't apply to damage inflicted on a grappler when already locked in a grapple. I'll admit when you had Jaymin strike the blow I did find myself re-checking that section of the rules, just to make sure, so you're not alone in your confusion! As for Jaymin dying... I doubt his time is up quite yet - you guys are pretty good at watching each others' backs, after all... :)

Aydan:
Slipping quietly through the mists, you soon come across the source of the yelling: Sir Jaymin, with blood flowing from between two plates of his armour and pinned to the ground by one bandit, as another hovers nearby, bloody dagger in hand...

Sir Jaymin and Aydan:
As one bandit fights to keep Sir Jaymin pinned, the other sticks his bloody dagger point-first into the sod, then slips his pack off his shoulder and starts to rummage around inside... Suddenly, the bandit wrestling Sir Jaymin looks up as the shadow of a figure looms through the mists...

'Watch out!' he yells; his fellow glances up... only to catch a mighty blow from Aydan's sword across his shoulder as the forester steps from the surrounding mists. The bandit swears and clutches at his wound...

Next round actions for you two please!

Sir Garrett:
You manage to get another heavy blow in on the archer... before he disappears in a crimson mist under the teeth and hooves of Argos... Yep - he's well dead!

The third bandit seems to have given up even trying to shoot at you, and Argos (possibly due to being covered in bloody gore) doesn't seem able to locate his scent...

Zurladew:
The bald, collared, ragged man turns at the slight sound of your snarl... only to catch a face-full of colour spray for his troubles! Both the silvery punching dagger, and the wand, fall to the ground as he drops to one knee, his hands both clutching at his one good eye...

'The M-Mistress will sk-skin you schl-slowly for this!' he manages to slur out, obviously stunned by your mystical assault...

There's a brief, subdued, glow of clashing colours a little way off in the mists, visible by all...

Zurladew:
... and caused by you...

Meanwhile...

Lady Beatrix moves wide and cautiously around the battle, reaching the one twin's side (the other twin still no-where to be seen). Clambering to her feet with your aid, the twin stares (with green eyes, so it must be Florencia) at the enraged barbarian...

'You charmed him!' she declares quietly, sounding impressed, 'Magically, I mean!' Slowly, her look of shock turns to a sly smile as she glances towards Beatrix, then back towards the combat,

'Well,' Florencia says, as she incants a few arcane syllables, pulls a rose petal from the pouch at her belt, and gestures towards the two crossbowmen, 'we can't let you have all the fun, now, can we?'

... With that, the crossbowmen both let out involuntary yawns... then slump to the stone floor, asleep...

Spittle foaming at his mouth, Beatrix's champion briefly glances round for a new target and, seeing the halbardeer the only enemy still standing, charges the man, swinging his greataxe over his head with both hands. Sparing a look behind him as Beatrix's champion bellows a battle cry, the halbardeer barely manages to step to one side to avoid the champion's devestating overhead blow - which instead misses, impacting the floor and sending stone chips flying. Moments later, the halbardeer ducks a horizontal swing from the champion's giant friend. Stepping back from the two barbarians, the mercenary looks for his own companions... but seeing none still standing, grits his teeth and thrusts his weapon towards Beatrix's man, catching him a nasty wound in the shoulder - the barbarian barely flinches, even though the wound looks enough to slay an average man, his rage apparantly keeping him going despite the wounds he's received...

Next round please!

"Impeccable timing, Sir Ayden," Sir Jaymin calls out through gritted teeth. "These two seem to have mistaken me for one of the farm animals they're accustomed to pleasuring themselves on."

'How did you know about..?' begins the bandit pinning Sir Jaymin... but is cut short as the knight manages to power free of his grip...

The bandit wounded by Aydan pulls a hand axe from his belt and swings wildly at the forester - missing completely...

Sir Garrett:
Ears pricked up, Argos trotts a few paces one way... then hesitates, and trotts a few paces in another direction... then stops again... apparantly unable to pin down the exact direction the words are coming from... Boy, was that one low Perception roll there... :/

Male Human Ranger 3

ProfPotts and Jaymin:

"Well you can't really blame them," Aydan retorts to Jaymin with a grin as he sidesteps out of the way of the man's clumsy attack, I mean that odor! My god man I thought you knights were all about smelling like dandies, when was the last time you bathed?" He grins as he launches his weight back the way he came, slashing his sword for the man's midriff.

atk 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

dmg 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

>_>.... really? *sigh*

"Well, it's a little difficult with all the muck-holes you keep leading us through," Jaymin replies as he swings at the wrestler.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

He also takes a five-foot step to start forming a flank with Ayden.

The Exchange

Sir Jaymin and Aydan:
The tip of Aydan's blade opens a light slash across the axe-wielding bandit's stomach... but he doesn't look ready to drop quite yet...

Meanwhile, the wrestler scrambles to his feet in unison with Sir Jaymin, his own handaxe ready and swinging in moments... only to be deflected by the knight's skillful shield-work. Sir Jaymin's retort with his sword proves far more effective, opening a bloody rent across the man's chest, leaving him (surely) on his last legs - but with fight left in him yet!

Spoiler:
Zurladew picks up the wand off the ground. "Only if she can find me, my collared friend," the gnome says as he raises his marcotte. With a grunt, the gnome swings his heavy staff at the man's head.

Pick up wand, and swing.
Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Damage: 1d4 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1

The Exchange

Zurladew:
Your marcotte glances ineffectively off the man's head... he laughs,

'My Mistress does worse to me just because she's bored!' he declares, a tone of pride in his voice...

... He doesn't appear to have noticed that you took the wand... And is still blinded and stunned right now.

Catching the sounds of battle joined, Sir Garrett spurs Argos towards the fighting...

... And finds Sir Jaymin (on foot) and Aydan locked in melee with two bandits - each bandit wielding a handaxe, and looking to be getting the worse of it...

Though it's still hard to see each other clearly in the mists, Garrett, Jaymin, and Aydan are close enough now that they at least know each other are there, and what's going on... and can all post their next round actions too, of course!

ProfPotts:
"Then I'm sure she'll completely outclass me when she finds out how badly you botched this ambush,"[b] Zurladew says in a sneering tone. He puts the wand away and picks up the punching dagger from the ground. [b]"Especially when she finds out that you've lost all the pretty toys she gave you. An expensive mistake, Master Sorceror."

Pick up the punching dagger and use Taunt to demoralize the caster - Zurladew is guessing as to the nature of his opponent's magic, based on the uniqueness of the man's dagger, that this may be a fellow spontaneous caster.
Taunt: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17

Just double-checking that you saw Jaymin's last attack, since I posted it while you were writing a post of your own.

With the arrival of Sir Garrett, Jaymin says to the bandits, "Really, I think it would be in your best interest to surrender."

He makes another 5-foot step towards a flanking position, then readies an attack for if the bandits don't, to go off before any attack the bandits might make themselves.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Male Human Ranger 3

"Ah! Sir Garrett, how kind of your to join us. I was just politely advising our knight of Thrushberry that he really needs to be far less prejudicial to these fine country folks, setting a bad example of your noble lads, and all"

He grins, gripping his sword and waiting for his opponent to try to make another move.

Readied action Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

dmg 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Re-check my spoilered post a couple up - I edited it when I saw you'd put up a post for Jaymin too.

Zurladew:
'Sorcerer?' the one-eyed man forces a laugh, 'My magic comes from Mestama - my Mistress's mother!'

Shaken or not, he's still stunned, so can't act anyway...

The two wounded bandits exchange a brief glance,

'She'd do worse to us than anything you can imagine,' the one who'd pinned Jaymin snarls... and they both move to attack... only to be swiftly cut down by Sir Jaymin and Aydan. Two more dead bandits!

"I don't care if your magic comes from your talking donkey, it hasn't served you well here," Zurladew says. He considers casting another spell, but can feel the fatigue from his magic-using thus far. Cursing his own weakness, he calls out for help.

"The caster is over here!," the gnome yells to alert the knights.

Hearing Zurladew call out, Garrett and Argos head out in that particular direction.

"Sounds like Zurladew has found the cause of all this damned fog..."

ProfPotts wrote:

If the way is clear, Beatrix will urge the twins out of the temple after Rebecca.

The Exchange

Zurladew:
The bald man blinks his one eye (or should that be 'winks'..?), focus seeming to return. You've enough experience colour spraying the occassional drunken knight who got out of hand at a feast to recognise that he'll probably recover from being stunned in a few short seconds...

Ears pricking up at the sound of the jester's voice, Argos quickly trotts over...

... To find Zurladew, clutching a slender stick and a (human-sized) punching dagger with a silvery blade in his hand, with a small (for a human), thin, man swaying in front of him, seemingly almost recovered from being stunned. The man's dirty skin is covered in myriad scars and his head shaved bald. His left eye is completely missing, while his right is dark. The scars covering his body appear rough and ragged, but cut into some specific pattern... although it's impossible to discern the details through the mists. The shirt and britchs the man wears are ripped and ragged, and a heavy iron slave collar, with a large metal ring imbedded in the front, is locked around his neck - and has been for some time, judging by the layers of blistering across his neck. Still, the man doesn't appear to be restrained in any real way. A bulky satchel is slung over the man's shoulder, and a pouch at his belt looks just the sort of place men of magic keep the components for their spells.

Shaking his head, as if to clear it, the bald man sneers,

'My Mistress will skin you all alive!' he declares with relish... but he also turns a little paler as he peers up at Argos with his one good eye, and doesn't seem to be making any agressive moves...

Meanwhile...

Lady Beatrix tries to urge Florencia out of the ruined temple (having no idea where Giliana has gotten to), but the green-eyed twin shakes her head,

'Can't we watch?' she asks with a pout as she nods towards the men doing battle, 'What's the point of making men dance like puppets if you don't even get to watch?'

Talking, as always, being a free action, Lady Beatrix can also do something this round if she wants... or can simply watch the men hack at each other as Florencia suggests, if she prefers! ;)

Sovereign Court

Male Gnome Sorceror 3

"Knock him down quick, man!," Zurladew says peevishly to the timely arrival of Sir Garrett. "I'd rather not see what other tricks he has." He grabs onto the man's arm to hold him steady for Garrett's attack...

Being completely combat-incapable, Zurladew will attempt an Aid Another to help Garrett hit.
Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15

Garrett charges his blade with a bit of magic, slashing at the stunned, one-eyed man while Argos tries to crush the man with his hoof...

Garrett Attack:1d20 + 7 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 7 + 1 + 2 = 14 (higher ground, Zurladew's aid)
Damage:1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 = 11 (arcane strike)

Argos (hoof):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Damage:1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Sir Jaymin adds his sword thrust to the group.
Attack:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The Exchange

Since the bald, one-eyed, man isn't resisting in the slightest, it's a simple matter to cut him down where he stands...

Sir Jaymin:
... Which triggers a pang of doubt in your mind. Sure, on the one hand Zurladew was yelling about tricks, and the guy was taking about people being skinned alive - he was obviously not a nice guy... on the other hand, he was just standing there, not making any aggressive moves and you, essentially, just helped to murder him...

ProfPotts:
Not trying to meta-game it, but while I can see a seed of doubt because he cut down an unarmed man, he trusts Zurladew and knows that a spell-caster is never really unarmed. Having his wizardly friend incapacitate an opponent is no different in many ways from getting a flank from Ayden. Now, I definitely can see him having qualms about the "unsporting" nature of what he just did, but this isn't a tournament ground.
I have no issues with exploring the moral grey areas (that's just part of the fun of playing a paladin), but I'm not looking to explore the "fall from grace" as a story arc unless the RPing takes a compelling direction that way, as I've played the fall from good to evil before and wasn't a fan. That being said, the morality of it all wasn't even on my radar when that part went down and it should have been, so this all makes for a good wake-up call to me to remind myself I am playing a paladin.

The Exchange

Sir Jaymin:
Yep - it was more an 'Oops! Did I just cut down an unarmed man?' moment than a 'Mwahahah! Die unarmed pig-dog!' moment; hence it being a 'pang of doubt', rather than 'welcome to life as a Fighter without bonus Feats!'. ;)

ProfPotts wrote:
** spoiler omitted **

ProfPotts:
That's what I figured. I'll have him brood about it later. Too many pressing thoughts at the moment.
The Exchange

With the ragged bald man dead, the fight seems to be over. Garrett recalls another bandit who disappeared into the mists, but after waiting a while there's no further evidence of any new attacks, so it's likely he's either hiding or fled.

Unless anyone wants to do anything in the meantime, the mists will dispurse in a couple more minutes.

"Let's use these mists while they last. Stick together, and feel our way along the wall." He pauses. "And keep an eye up to the top of the wall, in case brigands jump down at you."

The mists and helm do well to cover his blushes.

Sovereign Court

Male Gnome Sorceror 3

Zurladew proceeds to search the man more thoroughly, now that his threat has been neutralized.

Beatrix will follow the sisters if they leave, but will otherwise stick around.

And something goes bump in the night. Must be a thread...
