Arbiscar Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Arbiscar continues to have little luck in his examination of the runes, even with the prudent application of a Detect Magic spell - the strange not-fire that had just engulfed him and Scritch likely proving a distraction. On the other hand, Leepo steps forward and finally makes some headway on the pesky creatures as she pieces together some of the esoteric language that she can see adorning them.
Leepo's check was high enough that it counts as two of the needed successes!
Meanwhile, Scritch is unable to dodge the strange not-fire but in spite of the pain he hustles around to stand next to Leepo and has another go at trying to help shut the buzzing wards down!

★★★OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT★★★
After a loud crack and a ripple of arcane energy, silence falls across the museum as the construct guards freeze in place and haunted relics drop to the ground. Nigel’s voice rings out, magically projected throughout the museum: “We’ve disabled the magical security measures. Since we haven’t found the thieves yet, they must be hiding in my third-story study. Please subdue them; they have much to answer for!”
The clatter of a Pathfinder toppling a clockwork defender garbles some of Nigel Aldain’s announcement, and there are still intermittent sounds of battle throughout the museum. There’s no question that the Society’s efforts have quelled the worst of the trouble, and hopefully that will reassure whoever hides on the third floor.
@Table GMs: You have until October 19 to run Part C on page 14. The “Subdued Defenses” condition on page 16 is in effect.

Marcus shreds a few more of the runes with an arrow shot, leaving the whole mess looking perilously close to collapsing altogether! Arbiscar realizes that he really, really should have studied harder during his training as the complex organism continues to defy his attempts to understand it and shut it down.
Just then, another small group of Pathfinders turn the corner into the garden and take in the sight of your battle. "Here! Help them finish it off!" one of them cries and they rush in, their might combined with yours sufficient to overwhelm the runes. Hundreds of bits of paper gently float down into the grass, dormant - at least for now.
Combat Over!
"We'll finish taking care of this," a halfling dressed in robes says, waving at you. "That Nigel said whoever broke in's somewhere on the third floor, right? Go on ahead and we'll catch up as quick as we can!"

To Be Continued...

GM Ladile |

After taking a few moments to mend your wounds, you heed the advice of your fellow agents you quickly make your way back inside the museum and up to the second floor, as other groups of Pathfinders finish the job of taking care of the museum's guardians. As you take the steps up to the second floor you see that gears, glass, and chunks of wax litter the polished wood floor under a sign that proclaims "Scars of the Lich." The corpse of a Kellid warrior lies in a pool of blood, her furs soaked through.
You continue onward, up a set of spiraling stairs that must lead to Nigel Aldain's study. The mahogany walls and domed, plaster ceiling both show signs of heavy damage. Most of the luxurious furniture and the crystal chandelier are intact. The contents of cabinets and bookcases lie strewn about the floor. A small wooden panel near the door hangs open, revealing an arcane sigil covered in scorch marks.
A Kellid woman dressed in furs with intricate scars all over her body steps forward. She holds a hand up and says, "Stay back. We are members of the Twinhorn following, and we have only come to retrieve what was stolen from us."
A towering figure steps forward; his translucent red form is that of a man clad in heavy armor and wielding twin warhammers. "Medda, they must be in league with the thieves; they should die for crossing us." The man’s voice sounds hollow and unnaturally loud, and as he speaks, the chandelier glows with a dull light. The woman, Medda, puts a hand on the figure’s arm and says, "Maybe we should give them a chance to explain themselves, Anok."

Marcus keeps his bow trained on the barbarians watching for them to make a move. "Stolen? This is a museum. I admit I do not know much of this museum and how it acquires things. But are accusing them of outright theft? And why are we to believe a necromancer and her undead minion? I assume you have proof?"

GM Ladile |

"Necromancer? Undead minion!?" the translucent figure roars in anger. "I’m a phantom, not a ghost or a necromancer's meat puppet! I am Anok, and I protect the guardian of Ivvora’s hilt, Medda!"
The Kellid woman - Medda, you presume - tightens her grip on Anok's arm. "Stay your anger, Anok! They know not what they speak of but they also have the right to answers - they do not seem to be in league with these Blakros."
Turning her gaze back to the group, she elaborates. "These Blakros people stole our most precious heirloom." Medda retrieves a bundle of bloody bandages, then unwraps it to reveal a dagger hilt with only the fragment of a black blade. "It belonged to Ivvora, a champion of Vildeis who vanquished the great black evil from our land over 900 years ago. We kept it safe until the Blakros agents stole it three months ago."
Anok chimes in in his deep, booming and hollow voice, "As for your proof, they came into our camp asking about Ivvora. Medda gave them shelter and told Ivvora’s story, but we would not part with the hilt. The next morning the hilt and the Blakros agents were gone. We tracked it here, to this building."

Katswiri watches the exchange carefully, eyes narrowing in concentration as her glasses transform the subtle lip movements of the group into magically inspired understanding. "Equally important, are you responsible for all of...this?" Katswiri waves her hand around, gesturing down the stairs. "The museum is in quite a state. I'm honestly impressed with whoever managed to so expertly twist the defenses against each other. Is this all your doing, or did you simply take advantage of the disturbance?" Katswiri smiles reassuringly at the woman and her spirit companion. "From what you've said, if this is the cause of all this trouble we should be able to get this sorted out. Certainly, you have the rights to your own historical artifacts, and if the item was stolen from you it should return to where it belongs."

As he studies the pair, the proud woman and her ghostly companion, Esh doesn't sense any attempt at falsehood. On the contrary he realizes that they both seem suspicious of the group's intentions, though Medda clearly wishes to avoid a fight.
She listens to your words and as she does, her demeanor seems to shift. "To answer your first question, we are from the northern lands—the Realm of the Mammoth Lords to you southerners. Our following, or tribe, has been searching for our stolen heritage for months as I have said. As for myself-"
Anok steps forward defensively and proudly announces, "She is the guardian of Ivvora’s hilt, passed from keeper to keeper for generations—or for her, from parent to child. She is the first evening’s daughter in decades," he boasts, earning him a withering look from Medda before he adds, "And it is she who can sense and wield the hilt’s power properly."
Medda shoots Anok a scolding glare before explaining. "An evening’s child is one who realizes and expresses their true identity later in life. I am an evening’s daughter because when I was born, my tribe mistook me for a male child. My connection to our ancestral spirits has helped me transform in body, not just soul. As you are strangers, I would rather leave it at that."
Anok pales to a rosy hue before muttering an apology. "I misspoke, Medda. I forget that few are as open as I am about one’s past lives."

Scritch flaps idly by behind Leepo, nodding his head in agreement.

"I also have it on good authority that he doesn't eat brains, either," Medda adds, corners of her mouth twitching as though she might smile.

But after speaking with you I believe that your intentions are pure and perhaps with your aid we may be able to convince him to see reason and return the dagger to us. We will leave here peacefully with you if you will aid us in this."

Katswiri realizes with some horror that this is a bearded devil, once imprisoned within the chandelier somehow but likely now free due to the wards on the museum being compromised. She knows that they're resistant to magic (SR 16) as well as acid and cold (Resist 10 on each). The most effective weapons to use against them are weapons of good or weapons of silver, or both (DR 5/good or silver).
She also knows that they have a variety of tricks up their sleeves. They can teleport themselves across vast distances on whatever plane they happen to be on, purely at will. Even more worrisome, they can also summon reinforcements to aid them though this power is limited and can only be used sparingly. And if the glaive and vicious claws weren't enough even its hideous beard can serve as a weapon in close-quarters combat, potentially inflicting its target with a potent disease known as devil chills.
Luckily for the party but perhaps unluckily for the devil, Arbiscar's weapon is just right tool for this job! The dwarf maneuvers around to avoid the devil's reach and steps up next to him. His mighty earthbreaker glimmers in the light as he swings it around and connects against the devil's side with a meaty *THWACK*!

I'm glad you said something Leepo because I didn't catch the subtracted damage on Dekion's attacks! Leepo is right, you wouldn't subtract from the crit damage since it's all part of the same strike. Devil's HP total adjusted to the correct value now :)

"Seeing as my bombs are no good, let me try something else."

Devil Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Leepo decides to try a different tactic, conjuring a thick, slick coating of grease over the devil's glaive - and it works! The devil's jaw drops open in a perfect 'O' of surprise as he suddenly loses his grip on his weapon and it drops to the ground at his feet.
"Hah! Clever trick, puny gnome," the devil responds as he regains his composure. "Luckily I don't...what's the phrase you mortals use?...put all of my eggs into one basket," he says, a wicked grin spreading across his face as he flexes his sharp claws.

Satisfied that his normal weapon was able to damage the devil, Dekion maneuvers to the side of it to give others room to attack and swings his sword again.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 - 2 = 24

As Dekion turns and swings his sword yet again, the devil's wicked grin suddenly changes to a look of shock as the brave warrior's sword slices a gash into his abdomen - not especially deeply, but deeply enough. The devil drops to his knees, cursing in an unknown tongue before his form simply fades from sight!
Combat Over!
______
"Well done," Medda breathes as she and her followers relax, the two archers slowly lowering their bows. "Brave warriors, I thank you for your aid - I am not certain that the four of us could have bested such a creature on our own," she says as she offers a bow of respect to the group. "And now I see that we have something in common with each of you - a shared hatred of evil." As she speaks, Medda regards you all with a look of utmost respect.

Arbiscar balances his earthbreaker resting its head over the floor "Thanks Katswiri, I feel your magics protected me against those evil claws" the dwarf then taps his weapon pleased by its usefulness in the combat.
The Abadar serve kneels in front of the devil and registers it "How do you think it was? Is there more of this in the lamp? We perhaps should take it to the Lodge Masters to examine it"
Arbiscar makes a check himself, using detect magic.
