Gunari just stands up and moves to J17. He will use a fervor to cast Shield of Faith as a swift action.
Finarin Moonstep |
Kn Arcana: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Now that the site is back up and I am at work - am I a 5-foot step from the 'beast'?
Ibid. Oxley Abel |
paizo is back up! I was on the edge of my seat all night because I couln't check as see what happened!
Ibid runs toward the combat, trying to get into a position where he can be of some use. The calls and cries of battle urge him onward, ever faster.
Double Move: ending in square L22. *token not yet moved*
knowledge(arcana): 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 7 + (4) = 23
GM Damo |
Cyrus, moved you. No range penalties.
Finarin, you are not a 5-ft step from the 'beast'. You can get into flank with Bomande if you like.
Ibid, a kindly stranger has moved you.
**EDIT** This large creature's reach is only 5ft (like a horse). Finarin can approach without attracting an AoO. Removed from above.
Ibid approaches, bringing the light with him. The extra illumination allows the party to see the creature fully for the first time. It is a strange amalgom of hyena, goat, tiger and - most likely - demon. The companions wince as they notice Bomande's blood dripping from its enormous, oversized jaws. Clotted gaur blood also covers its coat, lending it a simultaneously filthy and fiendish aspect. Those closer to the creature can also see the likely reason it targeted the baron specifically: a scar, probably from a bullet wound, across its left rear flank. It seems that Baron Rudyahm is not the only one with a score to settle.
Finarin and Ibid recognize the monster as a particularly nasty leucrotta. Normally a leucrotta has the rear of a lion, but this particular variant has a tiger's haunches and tail. Ibid recognizes it as a Jalmeri Leucrotta (with some 4-player modifications). Leucrotta's are renowned for their ability to mimic voices (soud mimicry) and can use this to help them to lure unsuspecting creatures into its traps (range of 60-ft, -4 to the save if it uses your name, and otherwise as per mass suggestion) and their bite is particularly powerful and nasty (19-20 crit threat range, 1-1/2 strength damage, ignores 5 points of hardness).
Gunari heal check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
The light also allows Gunari to notice that the baron is very unlikely to be able to survive another assault like that. His wounds are quite severe, and they are already slowing his movements.
Cyrus's crossbow bolt strikes the leucrotta, but bounces harmlessly off its tough hide.

Gunari Maximoff |
"Baron!! Retreat! You are far better at range, and we need your firepower throughout the fight! Let us do what you hired us to do!" Gunari shouts out. 'We have to find a way to save our patron! Would not look good if he died.'
GM Damo |
The baron looks torn, desperately wanting a piece of this creature, but knowing the wisdom of Gunari's words (and feeling the pain of his wounds). After a deliberate pause, the baron nods, "Very well, Gunari, I am indeed better with my gun than my rapier."
Poor baron! 1 round to retreat, 1 round to reload... will he even get in a shot?
Gunari Maximoff |
What? He doesn't have rapid reload, or paper cartridges? He's in a 4-5, if he were a musketmaster he'd have it for free! SIGH!
Amaranti |
Amaranti continues his climb down, dropping down the last few feet.
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Idib's light now reaches the monster, and Amaranti sees what they are up against. Himself too far from the baron, the Garundi's mind reaches out from this plane, and calls for aid. And soon, a spark of flame appears out of thin air and starts growing.
Standard action: Summon monster II: Small fire elemental to P20
The materialized fire elemental obeys the summoner will, and moves to attack the enemy.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 +2 flank?
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Now marked with "F", I'll try to get a better image later. Would the grease catch fire, btw?
GM Damo |
The fire elemental floats in to a flanking position with the baron - Just made it, too. Lucky it had 50ft movement! Sorry, Finarin, your flank spot is now taken - you could delay until after the baron and flank with the fire elemental or just go for it! You're actually in a decent charge position - and flails ineffectually at the leucrotta who easily sidesteps its fiery blows.
Grease is no more flammable than any regular substance (ie. it's not lamp oil). Think bearing grease or butter. I think it used to be back in D&D (possibly you need to go back as far as AD&D 2nd Ed, even).
Next up: Finarin.

Finarin Moonstep |
As daring and cool as that would be to charge the beast that just laid down enough damage to kill me would be ... unwise.
"Foul beast."
Realizing they are going to need all their resources to take this beast down, Finarin draws from his arcane magic to cast snowball. Speeding from his outstretched hands, a huge ball of packed ice and snow speeds towards the beast.
Snowball Ranged Touch Attack into Melee: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 4 = 15
snowball: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6
Target must make a successful Fort save vs DC 14 or be Staggered for 1 round
Sorry for holding everyone up
GM Damo |
Fort save? DC 14? Mwa ha ha. And no hold-up - posting within 4 hours is fine!
Leucrotta fort save: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 --> Wow. Almost failed. I tried to fail by tempting fate above...
The snowball hits the leucrotta in the side of its head. It growls and quickly glances in Finarin's direction before turning its sights back to the baron.
Reluctantly, baron retreats and strategically crosses the stream (almost) to put some difficult terrain between him and a potentially charging leucrotta.
"Your friends are too timid to approach me!" laughs the leucrotta in the count's voice, "I'm coming for you, Bomande, and I'm going to kill you for what you did to me. I spent weeks healing from that wound." The cocky creature ignores the little ball of flame to rush after the baron.
Fire elememental AoO: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Fire elememental crit confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Flame damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Amazingly, the fire elemental gets a shot in, scorching the leucrotta's hide as it chases after the baron. Making ready to reload his gun, the baron is dismayed to once more be faced with the tiger-like monstrosity.
Leucrotta bite vs baron: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15 --> Go the baron's tactics! If the Leucrotta had been allowed to charge, it would have hit!

Cyrus springs forward making a beeline for the monstrosity. As soon as he reaches at directly opposite the Baron he slashes out with his sickle. He turns and winks at ibid before vanishing into thin air again.

Don't forget the DC11 reflex save, or it is on fire, thanks to the Fire Elemental
The ever-reckless Gunari starts by using his final fervor of the day to cast Divine Favor on himself. He then charges the Leucrotta (note: because this is a charge action, and not an attack action, he cannot roll twice)
CHARGE!: 1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 3 = 26 for: 1d6 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 3 = 6 (SO close to a crit! SO CLOSE)
"Take that, you foul beast! Leave the baron alone, and face your true enemy!"
GM Damo |
Cyrus' tactics are sound, but the leucrotta doesn't even notice the Keleshite slash at its flank before disappearing as it focuses all its attention on the baron.
Sorry boys, but...
As accurate as Ibid's shot is, like Cyrus' crossbow quarrel earlier, it simply cannot penetrate the leucrotta's tough hide and falls uselessly to the ground.
Thanks for that, Gunari! Leucrotta reflex save, DC 11: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 <-- Hello again, 3.
Gunari slices the Leucrotta in the side with his scimitar of drunkenness, drawing first blood (the other hits were frosty or fiery, not bloody).

Just as the fire elemental has finished with its attacks, Amaranti draws more power from the planes, and calls for another creature, this time from earth To M24. And as with the previous summon, this creature of stone charges into the combat.

Ok so this is the issue I have with playing a magus and why I suck so far - it is all about position position position and I am failing hardcore with positioning. So as of now only Gunari, Baron and Elemental are adjacent? My goal is to be 5-feet away from the Leucrotta at the end of it's turn.
Seeing his friends rush forward reckless putting themselves in harm's way, the elf silently curses himself for a coward for not advancing earlier when he had the chance. If he was to go down, he could think of other place he would rather be.
Whispering arcane words and drawing his scimitar, a ripple of blue electricity cascades along the blade. As the energy continues to oscillates up and down, the blade's edge becomes sharper, and the hilt elongates to provide a better grip.
"Today you die, beast."
Cast Shocking Grasp; hold the charge, STANDARD Arcane Pool Point SWIFT and move to ..... G25, MOVE
GM Damo |
Yeah, if you were threatening it (and had hit it) it probably wouldn't have chased after the baron so readily. But hey, you've invested time and effort into your character, not some NPC! Not sure you mean by being 5ft away by the end of the Leucrotta's turn. It's on difficult terrain and can't 5-ft step (neither can you, unless you go south) and it's hardly going to retreat...

"Baron! Fall back to Ibid's position! Get behind our line!" shouts a disembodied voice near the Leocrotta's flank.
Miro Ammars |
Miro thinks about greasing the area under the creature again, but instead opts to inspire his comrade with a "don't die" song. He moves away from the beast, knowing he will only get in the way of his more combat capable fellows.
GM Damo |
The baron withdraws as requested, making it all the way to Ibid's square. "You boys keep it occupied while I line up a shot!" he yells, a slight tremor in his voice beneath the bravado. Miro's song, though, is definitely emboldening the beset baron.
The Leucrotta looks as though it considers going after the baron, but the strange voice at its rear and the 3 other assailants force it to reconsider that course of action. It lashes out at the only one who has done it any damage in melee thus far - Gunari.

Finarin's magically imbued scimitar puts on an impressive display, but cannot seem to find a weak point in the leucrotta's hide. Gunari, on the other hand, calls upon the favor of Cayden Cailean (like he'd ever lost it!) to thrust his rapier deep into the creature's flank. It howls, sounding quite disturbing, as it still uses the count's voice. None are sure if this is intended to rile the baron up or not. Cyrus, meanwhile, carves through the viscous and humid air to bury his sickle to the hilt in the leucrotta before tearing it free.
"Thank you, my boy, that feels much better," says the baron as Miro helps some of his wounds magically seal over.

Cyrus, if you want to flank with both Gunari and Finarin, you need to move one square to the north. Unfortunately, you can't 5-ft step due to the difficult terrain. You're currently only flanking with Finarin. If you had enough movement before (while you were invisible) I'll let you retro the movement to match your actual description. Of course, Gunari can still 5-ft step up to flank.

The drunken priest once again staggers, stabs, and this time miraculously catches the beast in its evil looking eye. His blade comes out dripping eye goo and brains, as Gunari holds his breath in hopes that the beast falls before he does. "Sweet barleywine, that was a true strike!"

If it were me, I would tell you to add in actual to-hit roll again. The die roller will keep your "18" as the first roll, and your confirm will be a new roll. Then, you can check to see if it is a confirmed crit again, and adjust the damage roll as necessary. That is what I would have you do.
GM Damo |
Finarin: **EDIT** Just figured it out, yes, please roll the crit confirm as Silbeg suggested.
Now, I was away from the keyboard for half an hour or and all this happened! You previously expressed a desire (a number of times) to let the baron have the killing blow on the tiger. If it were a RL game, I would have done this:
Ibid's bow strikes the Leucrotta square in its forequarters. The arrow pierces deeply, severely wounding the already battered monster (taking your first damage roll, since you shouldn't have rolled two).
Gunari, Heal DC 15: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Before striding in with his rapier, Gunari notices that the creature likely isn't going to last more than one or two blows.

By the way, when I thought it was a deleted post, I did say that I trusted you, Finarin. I trust all of you on these things. Posting on these flaky forums can be a tricky prospect at best and I don't want the silly technology to take away the successes you have, especially in such an important combat! That said, please do be careful with your posts and rolls. We could use something like Roll20 to track them (far less flaky) but doing in-line rolls will no longer be possible, which would be a real shame. It would also make posting bulk perception and initiative a complete pain in the hole!

Gunari will delay until after the Baron, but before the beast. THank you.

Oh, I should say that you can "bloody" the leucrotta some more if you like. I will allow you to reduce your strength bonus or decide to not confirm a crit if you would like to do some more damage without killing it. You would need to roll again to do this, though. Gunari estimates it has between 10 and 20 HP remaining.

So as not to delay things too much, I'll wait an hour for responses. If I get 2 more before then, I'll go ahead anyway. At that time, unless there are any objections, I'll post an attack for the baron.

Sorry for all these ooc posts! Too much coffee this morning. I'll collect my thoughts better next time. I just checked my PMs and got one from Finarin prior to all this. He said he had a confirm roll in there that succeeded, but then deleted the original roll by accident. I'll go back to my previous statement that I trust Finarin more than the technological integrity of the Paizo forums. Consider the crit confirmed, Finarin.
